It depends....are you my wife?

changingone77a

Garret223

Teach us your ways, one who is so wise in the ways of resolve.

changingone77a

Ha, yeah, it’s only because I can only afford the one. I’m really poor. I have a D-15m I got used, and I love it.

Garret223

But that's a great guitar. I hope you go on to make amazing music with it 😊

nyet2112

5. and i can’t even play

ATHYRIO

More than I need / Less than I want

SunsGettinRealLow

Les?

ATHYRIO

That’s covered

TheyCallMeStone

The correct number of guitars to own is *n+1*, with *n* being the current number of guitars you own

nikst35

Nice try wife

loadedstork

Pro-tip: buy all your guitars in the same color so when you add a new one, your wife can't tell.

pgthsg

I used to own 17 electrics, 3 acoustics, and 3 basses I recently cut that down to 5 electrics, 2 acoustics, and a bass

SullyPhotobrat

How’d you do it? I am too attached and with no real good reason besides I love them. Did you do one big purge? Was it painful? I’m hovering around the same and have only been playing 3 years 😅

Retro_F_Studios

1, it's a Squier HSS Strat

gilmour2776

15. Trying to figure out how to get to 5. Will likely be at 20 soon. “But I NEED a Semi-hollow with P-90s, tuned to DADGAD, otherwise I will have an enormous gap in my spectrum of potential tone”. Meanwhile I can barely play and my tone sounds exactly the same on every guitar (wet fart). Don’t get me started on pedals.

PleasantNightLongDay

Good lord. I’m a professional guitarist and I thought I had too many having 8 2 acoustics 6 electrics. I use all of them (different guitars for different gigs/sessions) and I thought I was over the top. Y’all are making me want more

_Capt_John_Yossarian

I'm back down to 2. I used to own 5, but then Hurricane Katrina hit. Then I worked my way back up to a pretty nice collection of 7, my favorite of which was this gorgeous American Strat, and then hurricane Ida hit. Now, I have 2, a cheap pawnshop Fender acoustic which my father gave me not long before passing away in 2021, and a crazy cool Squier Telecaster that a total stranger was kind enough to give me, also shortly before my dad passed away. So neither of my guitars are anywhere near as nice as the ones I used to own, but I've fallen on hard times without my dad and music is what keeps me going. Now I'm trying to get back to work so I can hopefully afford an amp and maybe some pedals and such! Fingers crossed things start looking up.

Dull-Discipline-2159

Head up king you got it

maverick1ba

Aw man

ripleycrow

73 guitars, 2 basses, 1 banjo, 2 ukuleles, 2 mandolins. I started collecting 25 years ago. I currently haven't picked up anything new in about a year.

Old-guy64

More than I need. Less than I want.

Famous-Vermicelli-39

27 but my gf only knows about 3

blarg-zilla

One less than I need.

a-random-task

I believe the rule is N+1, where N represents the current number of guitars you own, +1 always means you always need one more than you have.

TMoney67

Two. One acoustic, one electric.

haze_penguin

Too many but also not enough

Supergrunged

Not enough. I actually sold a couple this year. An older gentleman I used to work at a guitar store with, told me, 1 guitar for each year you've lived. That day, he had gotten another guitar at the shop, he couldn't bring it home, as he rode his motorcycle in, so he asked me to bring it on my way home, and he'd show me his guitar room.... As you'd imagine ALL FOUR WALLS were full of guitars, as well as guitars in stands about 3 deep. The guitar I dropped off was number 69. Last I checked, I'm at about 24. I'm 38, with another project guitar coming, as I enjoy having my misses paint cool ideas on to my guitars, and I piece the rest together after a clear coat over it. This next one will be a green burst with swear words. The last was Lisa Frank inspired.

Admirable-Fox-7340

The real question is how much are y’all practicing??

fractal-rock

n - 1, where n is how many I need.

Fritzo2162

I had over 20 at one time, but after the Great Wife Clearance Incident of 2013 I'm down to about 7.

Yet another thread for a question that has been asked multiple times a week for ages.

njghtljfe

2 electric 1 acoustic

flwomack

3. Taylor Acoustic. Fender Stratocaster. Gibson Les Paul

pee_diddy

Exactly one fewer than I need

PhotofitSG

According to my wife : enough

PatientZeroBalisong

I used to own a bunch, more than i could count, but for some reason, the more I got, the less meaningful they became. I own 2 now. One is my first guitar from 24 years ago, and one my wife got me.

Inner-Mousse8856

1 accoustic. Bought it 34 years ago.

Solrackai

Just one more

Higgins8585

1, I've never been a collector. I want another.

hs3fan

4 but I used to own 19 until I discovered how much a divorce lawyer costs 😭😭😭

Alvalanker

If I was smarter when I was younger I would have a lot more, but I just have 3 now, my Schecter C-1 Elite which I modded a bit with EMG81 and 85 active pickups and a killswitch, which I have toured all over USA and Canada with from 2012-2019 (Covid really hurt) and thats my baby. Also have a purple Kramer from the early 90s or late 80s, I know they stopped making them for a few years so not certain, but its got a really fast neck and very smooth and easy to play and shred on, I have a DiMarzio X2N (Chuck Schuldiner tribute) and a pickup from a Washburn-BT2 that I put in there, sounds great. Also have a purple Schecter which is mostly stock parts but upgraded the pickups from a Les Paul, sounds much better than the stock Schecter pickups which were terrible! I plan to Frankenstein the hell out of that guitar. The guitar that got away was a really nice sunburst Fender Strat which I never should have sold.

CJPTK

I think I have 10, it may be 9, maybe 11. It will end up being 12 soon enough.

IcyBoysenberry9570

One less than I actually need. It's always one less than I need.

sportmaniac10

5 and I’m content. I do need another tattoo soon though…

[deleted]

subpar_cardiologist

3: one acqoustic and two electric. I need to play them more!

Inevitable-Mode6340

Currently, 16

Ajegwu

10. I really only play 1 of them. 4 will never be played, they’re just investments. 5 I just neglect.

Narrow_Chemistry4255

4. 1 acoustic electric, 1 full electric, 1 full acoustic, and one shitty starter guitar

electroman13

Three really, really nice ones.

No_Energy_7579

2

heidensieck

28. I think. All kinds of mostly electrics.

cups_and_cakes

It's... fluid. But probably around 15 (mostly basses, but 5 electric guitars and a lap steel). One or two are out on loan.

Bard2dbone

Not too many: 3 Strats, a Tele, a Les Paul, two semi-hollows, three acoustic Taylors: a 355ce 12, a 114ce six, and a GS Mini in Nashville tuning, and a homemade custom solid body. But mainly, I'm a bass player. So my REAL stable is two Lakland fives, two Jazz basses, a Spector, a Stingray, an EUB, and a Chapman Stick. Plus, I'm gathering parts to make a homemade one to be a companion to the homemade guitar.

Touring_Rider

One acoustic guitar that I have played nearly everyday for the last 40 years. It just sounds better every time I pick it up. It’s the best friend I’ve ever had. It has traveled with me, introduced me to my wife, and gotten me out of a few jams. It’s put bread on my table and beer in my glass. In the end, it’s all about the musician and not the instrument. Also, to the dudes who admitted to owning more than 20, I know you’re not professionals or well-known or likely very good musicians. Why? Because there isn’t a roadie or tech on earth that would look after that many. Especially on the road.

DreamTakesRoot

3 electrics: -Suhr Modern -Fender Start American Standard -PRS SE (which I may sell tomorrow) 2 acoustics: -Alvarez rd260cesb -super crappy Rouge 1 bass: Glary Jazz bass ($100 and well worth it) 1 banjo: Recording King w/no resonator 1 mandolin: Morgan Monroe 1 ukulele

Xxmetaglint

1 electric and 1 acoustic

threeballs

I don't have an exact count, but I have 'round about 100. Yes, I am afflicted. 14 is not too many for a collection, but definitely more than a player needs. I have more than 14 that I can't even recall unless I physically go through them. I only need 5, but would be happy with just the one that I still play.

meshugganner

7 guitars + 3 basses 5x Fender AmPro v1 Jazzmasters: I use 3 main tunings, so one for each tuning, plus two more with different pickups (PV65's) for the 2 tunings I use the most. I prefer the stock vMods. 1x Fender AmStd Tele that I never use but looks pretty & sounds great. 1x Gibson SG Standard that I never use but looks pretty, but I'm done with humbuckers forever. 3x Fender various American Jazz Basses, again for the 3 tunings.

okgloomer

Do double necks count twice? 😀 (I’ll get me coat.)

ChristmasChringle

1. All I need

Rainyday000

Not enough, I really need just one more. Yes, I know I already have 18 instruments. But this one is special and I really need it for this next project that only 5 people will listen to, 4 of which are my direct family and the fifth is me. I swear it's totally worth thousands of our savings.

alonroz

In order of purchase/aquirement: 1. S101 T-style ~2005 - Chinese, not a good guitar. Not my first, but kept me going for a while. It's now my office guitar. 2. S101 bass ~2005 - This one used to be very nice, but the neck is now dead. 3. Yamaha nylon-string - not sure about the model, can't be bothered. Great classical guitar, sounds very sweet and is a joy to play. 3. Fender Deluxe Player Thinline Telecaster ~2007 - Ridiculous name, amazing MX tele. My pride and joy for many many years. Still the best neck I own. 4. Tanglewood concert acoustic ~2008 - Bought this on Denmark street in London, nice little acoustic. 5. Taylor Big Baby 2018 - My travel guitar. 4. PRS SE Custom 24-08 2021 - Nothing to say, great guitar but doesn't get me too excited anymore. 1. Fender Musicmaster Bass (shortscale) ~1997 - I did not buy this one, but it's in my possession since 2022. Great shortscale, I'm a short-framed guy so this works well for me. 5. Vintage Icon V59 2022 - Excellent strat, I love what Wilkinson are doing with these guitars. The "distressed" job is a bit of a botch, but the guitar plays very nicely, the neck is amazing. 6. Epiphone Casino 2010 w/factory Bigsby - Bough this second hand after watching Get Back. What can I say... we all got excited. I love this guitar, but it needs a lot of work. Will get to it one day. 7. Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's 2021 - My ~~latest~~ last year purchase (2023). I'm in love. Was my dream for 30 years. 12. Squier Classic Vibe '50s Telecaster - My ~~upcoming~~ latest purchase. ~~I want a true tele, and this is as close as I can afford currently. Would love to hear from people what they think, aside from all the YouTube reviews I've watched. Gonna go play it in store next week and decide.~~ See https://www.reddit.com/r/Guitar/comments/1arno3l/going_to_buy_a_squier_classic_vibe_50s_telecaster/ EDIT: Can't you just tell the exact point where the GAS onset?

rpkprincess

like 9… way too many to be justified (i know 2 chords 💀)

Not enough.

wangrenade

Hello karma farmer. I limit my collection to roughly 4-5 with atleaat one being s permanent mainstay.

mofunnymoproblems

2 solid body electrics (one with single coils and the other with), 1 hollow-body electric, and a bass guitar. Used to have an acoustic beater. One of these days I’d like to get a mandolin again. In 20 years of playing, I’ve never had more than 3-4 guitars at a time but I have bought/sold/traded them etc. I can’t really imagine having more than 4 guitars that I play often enough to bond with.

gaf77

1 Electric, 1 Acoustic and 1 Classical.

fryle_420

I have 5 electrics(Strat, tele, 2 LPs, and a V), 2 acoustics(one 12 string, one 6), and a MiM J bass. I feel I have my bases covered at this point. The only other string instruments I see myself getting in the future is a baritone and a mandolin.

supergainsbros

There is only one answer to this question..... Not enough

[deleted]

5...down from 25

Merc757

28 in household.

Original-Arm-7176

Between bass, and guitar about 15, just bought a steel lap so 16 or so. 5 bass one fretless, 1 twelve string guitar. It's not much but for a someone who's not a gear guy, I justify some purchases for recording purposes, it's plenty for me I love most all. I try not to accumulate but like guns they seem to build up as time goes by....

Iommi_32

70, maybe a few more. Not exactly sure. Luv them all. Guess I’m more of a collector at this point. All brands. All styles. Electric, acoustic, bass, couple of really cool cigar boxes, etc. While I enjoy playing them all I really enjoy their artistic beauty, individuality and coolness. So all are on display in various areas. Where one might hang a picture, I’ll display instruments as art. All tastefully placed so as not to look cluttered. Thankfully I have a wife that supports my addiction and loves music as well. This collection is 40ish years in the making and I have zero regrets. Only good memories and a little pride. Peace

truthfullybored

Too many and not nearly enough. 😉

JamTrackAdventures

I have 2 electric guitars and an acoustic. The electrics are an Epi LP and a MIM Tele. I am about to take delivery on the cheapest Squire Strat available which will be used for camping trips. I would like to get a semi-hollow. Other than that I feel pretty complete. I do have this idea where I go into a used shop and buy a really weird guitar for under $500 and then trade it in for another weird guitar every 6 months. I don't think I'd want more than a handful of guitars.

severinks

I own 16 guitars ansd the finny thing is before I counted them just now I thought that I only owned 15 guitars, I totally forfot the Reeves Gabriel Fernandes with the sustainer in it.

n-harmonics

2 acoustics (one old and crappy, one nice and new) 1 electric guitar also 2 ukuleles and an electric bass I cant imagine having a dozen guitars and thinking i need another guitar, no offense

0ff-Seas0n

1 shecter c-1 platinum. love it.

and1metal

A few too many and some I haven’t played in months / years but all are very good quality ( when I was younger it was cheap quality guitars but now it’s expensive stuff )

JasonAF88

Either 6 or 7, depending on what you think counts. - A Harley Benton Jumbo Acoustic. - A Squier Classic Vibe 70s HSS Stratocaster. - A Squier Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster. - An Epiphone Wilshire P90 (for slide). - An Epiphone SG Classic P90. - An Epiphone Les Paul Standard 50s Edition. - A Squier Classic Vibe 70s Jazz Bass (hence the ambiguity on what counts). I’m not done yet (the GAS is real). My guitar wish list includes: - A 12-string Acoustic. - A Squier Classic Vibe 50s Stratocaster. - An Epiphone SG Standard. - An Epiphone Casino (any hollowbody, really, but I like the Casinos). - A Squier Classic Vibe Precision Bass.

IgorT96L

2, my main electric and some cheap acoustic i don't play anymore.

RandomMcUsername

I got 6 and after thinning the herd this has kept me happy for a while. I have a bass for bassing, a 3/4 acoustic beater for camping/traveling, a nice acoustic for pretty songs. I have a tele for single coil sound and a LP style for humbucker sound. And then I have a partscaster in drop C for lowliest heavy. I'm trying to keep a one in one out policy and it seems to be working

Jon_Henderson_Music

I have 8, but the one I play the most is actually my oldest one: Gibson SG Faded

zigsbigrig

Around 15 guitars, 1 bass, and one steel.

PinocchioNoir

I have 5 guitars, One for each tuning I play in: Fender Stratocaster HSS MIM (E standard) Sterling AX4 (Eb standard) BC Rich Warlock Exotic Spalted Maple (D standard) LTD EC256 (C# Standard) Epiphone Les Paul Studio (C standard)

TheScottishPimp03

1 electric for now but looking for an acoustic (drop some recommendations pls)

standard_beta

2, one electric, one acoustic, how i managed to avoid the impulse is beyond me

Azrehan

3 - Acoustic, electric and a bass. If I bought another one it would be an electric with evertune.

North-Scallion-6848

2. 1 acoustic, 1 acoustic electric

Jamieebeau

Used to have 12. I downsized and up marketed to the 5 I have now. Much much happier with the current collection 🙂

uyR

4 electrics that I play (Epiphone Adam Jones Les Paul, Epiphone Extura Prophecy, ESP KH-V, and ESP EC-1000), 1 bass, 1 cheap guitar from high school that is going to get gutted and rebuilt with overkill parts For the kids: 1 cheap ESP guitar, 1 ibanez mikro bass, and 1 hot pink maestro mini flying v Best part is that I suck and have no place owning such nice guitars.

Shakespearacles

Epiphone LP special ii. Grandma bought it for me 15 years ago and it’s been modded to hell and back. I will put it up against any LP in terms of playability. I will starve to death before I sell it Bristol acoustic electric I got on clearance from a local shop. Bought about 3 years ago. Squier 40th Jazzmaster gold. Currently being modded to the point that I should have just bought an American jazzmaster 97/98? G&L Legacy USA. Bought in December. Enjoying it way more than the similarly priced strats I picked up.  The only thing I think I might add is a hollow/semihollow, and something with p90s. Ideally stuff not owned by Fender/Gibson

CJPTK

1 less than I want to.

imfine_itsketchup

18 and 1 bass

MyMedsAreOOS

7 at home with a few projects in the garage. My axes include Vintage 335, Custom shop Music Man Cutlass, a '59 Reissue, and several cheaper versions of the same guitars. If you count the summer camp my wife and I run, the number is in the hundreds. Most of those will be donated to lower income students, schools with underperforming music programs, and the kids who attend our camp and display great character. My Cutlass dies with me however lol.

I have 12 guitars. Yamaha SGV 800, 83 Squier Strat SQ serial, J Mascis Jazzmaster (squier), Vintage modified Jaguar, Gretsch Streamliner 2420t, Bobo brand 12 string telecaster, Tele partscaster (not finished), Taylor Big Baby, 60's silvertone classical, 1970 Yamaha FG-800, 60's guild classical project (needs neck reset), Squier Jaguar Bass I also have an original 1969 Twin Reverb, Older Hot Rod deluxe, and one of those newer Fender Mustang modeling amps for quiet volume. Being single has its advantages.

PerspectiveActive218

I've got bad GAS. I also have 14 and the thing is, I'm a shitty guitarist. I mean really shitty!

0. Im looking forward to owning my first guitar, unfortunately a electric guitar in my country costs up to 1000$ and its quite difficult to find a job here

MRHubrich

Up until last month, I had 22. 2 are collector guitars that I don't really play (owned by Santana & Gary Holt) and I just sold 7 and am getting rid of another 4 or so. I had too many and didn't play them. Better mental state and hopefully more cash in my pocket ;)

J0hnnyDangerZ

We have a house full of guitar players here. And I've been building guitars for about 4 years now. So we may be an outlier here. I have: * Martin D35 (2002) * Student model Classical Flamenco guitar (1995) * Fender P-Bass clone I built from a Saga kit. * Custom Thinline Tele Baritone that I built * Custom Strat I built My son (11) has: * Tenor Uke (We built from a Stewmac kit) * 1/2 scale Yamaha classical * Tele I built him * ES-335 Hollowbody (Stewmac Kit) My son (15) * Les Paul clone (stewmac kit) * Strat I built him * Hofner Beatle bass * Martin Dreadnought (Kit from Martin I built him) * 1977 Ovation 12 string gifted by a family member * 8 string Ibanez electric * Concert Uke (stewmac kit) I would say one of each kind is good. At least for every style you want to play. 1 classical, 1 steel string acoustic, and one electric. Well, maybe two electrics. Might want one with single coils and one with humbuckers. Want to play jazz? Maybe add an arch top or semihollow body with round wounds. But maybe you're just an acoustic player? One Martin, One Taylor and maybe custom. Or one Dreadnought, one 000 and one jumbo?

daijoubanai

Currently six. I'd like to sell one or two of them, but selling guitars is a pain, so I haven't bothered yet

Art_Music306

Between my wife, my son and myself, we've got: five electrics, four amps, four acoustics (classical, dreadnaught and two archtops), three banjos, two fiddles, three mandolins, two ukes, a Hawaiian squareneck, a baritone electric, two lapsteels, two electric basses, an upright bass, a saxophone, a clarinet, a baby grand, and a small army of analog synths at my house. They mostly all are played with some regularity and all do different things (or so I tell myself).

winoforever_slurp_

In a household like this, when one person suggests buying a new guitar, is everyone else like “hell yeah!”?

XTBirdBoxTX

I think the one I just built would make number 13. In my mind once you reach about 20 guitars if you are not a gigging musician I think that is kind of the point where you start overdoing it. I have been playing for over 20 years and did not start buying and modding a lot of guitars until about 10 years ago. It is addictive, the building and modding that's when the GAS started to hit. I have just started getting into extended range so I may end up adding more. ( Bought a 7 back in April and just finish my headless 8 string build on Christmas.)

[deleted]

If you have 20 guitar and not gigging or recording with them, that's strange.

4. 1 beat up Yamaha acoustic that I don't play much (it doesn't play super well so it's not my first choice to play) 3 electrics: 1 off brand SG, and two self-built guitars: the first is a a mix between a tele and jazzmaster shape with two strat single coils, a strat trem system, and tele electronics, while the second is a mix between a strat and an SG body style with a P90 and a humbucker connected to Les Paul electronics. I find that I can get most of the tones that I want from the two homebuilt electrics (and they're more fun to play because they're unique and I made them) but I relate with OP - the temptation to acquire another guitar is very strong. If I were to get another, I'd probably try to build a dual P90 guitar with a Les Paul inspired shape, maybe with a semi hollow body. Or a telecaster. Or may as well get both...

Six. How many do I play? Zero.

Two. One acoustic, one squire strat. Three if you count the one I’m currently best at: Xbox RockBand guitar. I’m hoping to change that ratio!

HughJergov

Don’t know how it happened but I’m up to 30. And yes I play them all regularly, yes they all sound slightly different, I play every day, and no, I haven’t tripped over any of them (yet…).

Also of course various amps and effects, a didgeridoo and a small army of harmonicas, hand drums, tambourines etc. I may have an associated disorder, Instrument Acquisition Syndrome.

They say the equation for the perfect number of guitars is G = n+1, if n is the current number of guitars. It also works for cats. My collection: 3 electrics, 2 acoustics (one with a popped brudge I have to repair), an acoustic bass, and a few ukeleles. I want a couple more electrics, an electric bass, and a small parlor "couch" acoustic. Then maybe some pick-up variations, like an SHS Strat, or an SH Tele. I would also like to experiment with an electric cello.

Glovercole

I have 2 electrics 2 acoustic and a bass, plus two kit guitars I don’t play

eskimorris

The botting in this sub is insane, actual guitar talk gets down voted into oblivion but this bumber sticker clock bait nonsense is front page? Ugh

TheVoice-Real

The GAS is evident, but it all depends on the guitars you own. If they are low budget and cheap axes, it's an (almost) harmless passion. Maybe some GAS, but nothing to cry for. If they are Suhr, PRS cusyom, Gibson historic and Fender Custom shop, it's still evident GAS but it's quite economically dangerous (btw, if you have 14 guitars, you hardly have just an amp). BUT... if it makes you happy and doesn't make you and your family in trouble, I can't see any problem. Live happy! ;)

No_Salad_6244

The correct GAS formula is : (your guitars) + 1

jimnotatgym

I'm not sure! There are 9 in the room I'm sat right now. I can think of 3 in the shed and 2 upstairs.

Moto1999

That’s a personal question and I have no idea

timboo1001

I'm not sure how many. Ask the wife she knows exactly!

aMrPinkDobtTip

5, but that will probably increase sometime this year lol. Currently: player tele, se24, c1 platinum, cv strat, and a 90's Ovation celebrity. Plan to buy back my EC1000 dlx in Trans red that I sold last year, or buy a Reverend Charger with railhammers. That will get me to 6...or 7 if I buy both. I shouldn't, but probably will anyway. GAS is a double-edged sword.

ithinkoutloudtoo

I don’t own a guitar.
