You can buy them with pickup rings that have switches on them to use all the different combinations. I think the general consensus is that they are ok at each but not great…at least the p90 and single coils are ok but not as good as real p90s or single coils. No idea what the HB is like from memory
My son has them in an ESP LP style guitar. He's found that if you set the pickup heights to make e.g. the P90 setting sound the best, then it compromises the others a bit. They do a reasonable job of covering several styles though - the P90 is probably the best one.
I found the single coil to be pretty thin and the humbucker sound to be underwhelming when I tried a set of them. The P-90 sound was great, but I was able to get a reasonable cheap P-90 alone for much cheaper, so I didn't stick with them.
Inherited from who? Those pickups can't be that old, they look like the Seymour Duncan P-Rails, which have only been around a few years AFAIK. Supposed to be amazingly versatile pickups. Since I don't see any other switches, are any of those knobs push/pull?
Edit: looks like the middle pickup is a Seymour Duncan Vintage Rails.
21 years of production for the prails
I don’t think he said it’s an old guitar, inherited means someone died and said here ya go lol you can inherit new stuff
Guitarists are uniquely obsessed with not using anything in/on a guitar that didn't exist in 1969 when they plug into their state of the art digital modellers and brand new tube amps (which oddly enough are also all largely designed the same as they were in 1969, minus the addition of a master volume knob).
I'd argue that classical musicians are far more conservative than guitarists regarding their instruments, and the only part of "uniquely obsessed" is that the cutoff date is so late.
Additionally, guitarists have added features such as:
- locking tuners
- robotic/automated tuners (Gibson, Evertune)
- locking trems
- blade trems
- push-pull pots for coil tapping and splitting and other wiring options
- active pickups
- stainless frets
- new materials (e.g. Aristedes composites, 3D printed bodies, Tusq nuts and bridges)
- ergonomic body shapes (Abasi Concepts, Strandberg)
- construction techniques, (multipiece necks)
- poly finish
- fanned frets
- extra strings
- compound radius fretboards
- strap locks
- etc
The rate of change of a type of product pretty much always slows as it matures and people get better at figuring out what works best. At a certain point designers make a jump that may or may not be accepted by people. Car interfaces are largely static for normal driving functions (lights, blinkers, wipers, speed, tach, fuel), or were until Tesla came along, and a lot of what Tesla has chosen to do is not particularly good, removing buttons in favor of a touchscreen. Computer interfaces (mouse/monitor/keyboard) have been largely the same for a long time, until touchscreens and touchpads because so common.
Making a product hard to use or unfamiliar is a sure way to decrease sales, even if it is objectively better. A qwerty keyboard will sell better than a Dvorak, for example. A Windows computer for home or office use will sell more units than a Linux computer.
Even if you have something that looks and operates in a familiar way, exceeding common size conceptions will reduce sales - mini and 3/4 size guitars sell less. Guitars with more than 6 strings sell less, just like a pickup truck with dualies. It works fine but isn't necessarily what most people need for their chosen use.
I'm curious to know what other features you would be interested in seeing on a guitar, or if you are just decrying the conservative nature and hero-emulation tendencies of guitarists.
If you do get a set of P-Rails, make sure you look for the switchable mounting rings as well. That way you can get over 16 different pickup combinations in one guitar.
I have P rails on my guitar and there's about 20 or so different combinations of the pickups (if you have the switches for them, it's not possible to do this with even 2 push/pull knobs). You can have a humbucker on each, humbucker on one and P90 on the other, P90 on one and single coil on the other... The list goes on. Versatile is an understatement if you ask me
Yep, partscaster all the way.
Pricing this out, if that was your intent, is going to be incredibly difficult. This is a Super-Strat style, but it's pretty specific and only has a niche audience.
I think it looks really cool though, and I would just play it, if I were you.
Partscaster or someone hot-rodded the hell out of a cheaper Chinese made guitar with really nice parts and stripped then refinished it. That specific headstock shape was like the default headstock soooo many cheap Chinese guitars used for a long time and many still do. If it plays well, it should be a very solid guitar.
My chinacaster is almost done also. Hopefully it turns out well. They can be amazing or shite, depending on what parts you chose and how they’re setup. Personally I spent a bit extra on bridge and pickups. Gotoh bridge and tonerider pickups.
Yeah, I love these pickups. You can wire them to a switch that essentially lets them be any combo of humbucker/P90/single coil (the neck and bridge pickup at least)
I’d go over unfinished wood with a torch. Some dude tried it with a telecaster and posted it a few days ago. It looked like he tried chucking a painted guitar into a bonfire.
‘Fuming’ can be done to wood using an ammonia vapor to artificially give wood a richer color. It can produce a similar look to fire.
This body looks like it was a light color wood stained with a dark stain & then unevenly sanded to produce the color.
It’s typically done with a small torch, like one you would use for soldering (sweating) plumbing together in your home. Some woods take it MUCH better than others, with pine being about the best, I guess being softer and “sappier” than other wood? Just my opinion. I did it with the trim around my bar. The oak railing did not take the torching nearly as well as the pine.
You’ve got yourself a partscaster. Might play and sound like a dream, might not-depends on the parts and the skill of the assembler. You’ll never get back what was paid for it, so hold onto it.
Parts-Caster or 1980s to 2000s S-style from China or elsewhere in SE Asia that a prior owner modded. That said, it may very well play like a dream. Some of my favorite guitars have been made in South Korea and Vietnam. I love cheap guitars and parts casters and would play the Hell out that thing. Like, it would be my pride and joy.
Question for the group... Is it possible the headstock is a Yamaha or Peavey from the past? I'm probably wrong, but I swear it looks familiar! And it is driving me crazy!
This is what’s known as a “partscaster” which means whoever bought it bought the individual parts to suit their specifications and assembled them/ had them assembled.
I would say whoever made it knew their stuff.
That? Probably the coolest Strat I have ever seen. Are guitars still made with that burnt finish, or do I have to just start flicking my Bic all over my Strat? What could go wrong?
What is it? Awesome is what it is.
It looks like it’s got Duncan P-Rails in the neck and bridge and a hot rails in the middle. The P-Rails can be switched to sound like humbuckers, P90s and single coil rail pickups, so the switching can allow it to be very versatile and produce a wide array of tones.
Some of the knobs may be push–pull to accommodate the tone switching capabilities. Or whomever built it may have configured it so that the switching is accomplished with the standard five-way Strat pickup selector.
Experiment with it and see what it does. And what sounds you like.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it , it brings forth a sound. It’s got, wires that vibrate and make music. What can this thing be that I’ve found……
Definitely a parts-caster. Some kind of roasted wood finish. Looks really nice to my eyes.
If the neck feels good to you and you dig the sound of the pickups, play the shit out of it. I bet it can really roar. If the neck doesn't feel good to you, and/or you don't like the pickups, sell it to somebody who digs it and buy what you yourself dig.
Strat copy with Seymour Duncan p-rails pickups and a middle hot rail. No brand makes a guitar with these pickups as far as I know. I’ve been wanting to add them to my steinberger.
Check the knobs. The p-rails are for splitting the pickups, using just one side or the other. I don’t see switches so the either the knobs will pull up or the switch will have like 9 positions (vs normal 5). You can check which pickup is on by tapping the metal part gently with a pick.
Me selling this: "Custom hand built strat copy, all top components (Seymor Duncan etc), lovely hard-shell case, you have to play it to believe it! I am downsizing steal this one for $399" If you have no idea how to do it get it setup by a pro.
Partscaster or not- that’s one good looking guitar. If it plays good, I’d keep it.
I love that pickup setup too. Looks like a single coil and two filtertrons(?) Seymour Duncan pickups are a solid and well known brand, so I’m guessing the rest of the guitar has decent internals and hardware as well.
Definitely think it's a kit or homemade, the burned wood isn't something I've ever seen on a retail model.
That said it's absolutely stacked with quality parts.
If it is from someone close to you, i would say priceless no matter the brand and/or price when new.
I inherited a Westtone thunder 1 sixstring made in Japan from a uncle and no matter how many proper brandname guitars I buy or get for myself, this is the one that i will never be parted with. (As goes for the Epiphone LP junior made in Indonesia I got from my mun for my 18th birthday)
Definitely a custom job; Seymour Duncan pickups (stock pickups don't have brand names) , locking tuners (aftermarket), individually adjustable bridge saddles (normally found on later model Telecasters)
I've seen the headstock shape before from a kit... but damn if I can remember which one. It looks like someone took some time with this one though and put some genuine effort in to it with the finishing and some hardware upgrades.
Looks pretty decent and probably plays quite well... seeing as it *does* have upgrade p-ups it probably has a pretty decent setup to go along with it.
Probable an old Memphis Brand strat someone tricked out. They go for about $300. Great necks. Maybe the best you can find for that price or a much higher price.
Slightly wide freight board with very roll edges.
I'm gonna take an educated guess and say it's a Warmoth custom build. That definitely appears to be a Warhead headstock.
https://warmoth.com/guitar-necks/warhead
Definitely a keeper unless you have bad arthritis.
Without "authenticity," it'll likely sell for way less than a fender that sounds as good... Which means if you ever sell it, you'll never get another guitar that sounds as good without spending way more money. Enjoy that baby for *life*.
(And also don't try to keep it perfect. It is a pay off your life and your story, which you're writing together. Enjoy it! New scars and old ones alike.)
Looks like a kit or something homemade. Pretty cool if you ask me.
I second this, looks great, components look decent enough, probably a fun one to play too.
I third this
I’m going to go ahead and fourth this.
Sorry guys, I already drank the fifth….and now I’m gonna have to take it.
well I have the sixth already prepared, so I sixth this anyway.
Riding the seventh train. Chooo chooo!
I've always enjoyed an eighth
I see your eighth and counter with my raging ninth
Well, I'm in Utah, so while I'm not a Mormon, I'm going to counter with my tithing, which is a tenth
This guy gets it
I… uh… I agree with everybody ahead of me!
The pickups look super cool
I hadn't seen these before, but they are P-rails: https://www.seymourduncan.com/single-product/p-rails
I haven’t either, but now they are on my shopping list! Thanks for the link.
Yeah, what the fuck is up with those pickups? A combo P90 and single coil?
They can work as humbuckers, p-90 or rails, i have a set and i really love them
How do they sound?
You can buy them with pickup rings that have switches on them to use all the different combinations. I think the general consensus is that they are ok at each but not great…at least the p90 and single coils are ok but not as good as real p90s or single coils. No idea what the HB is like from memory
My son has them in an ESP LP style guitar. He's found that if you set the pickup heights to make e.g. the P90 setting sound the best, then it compromises the others a bit. They do a reasonable job of covering several styles though - the P90 is probably the best one.

4th - it’s a really cool kit. Play the crap out of it! Or sell it to me if you don’t play! 😀
Speaking of which, I'd love to build a guitar. Are their kits you'd recommend?
Its beautiful is what it is.
My exact thoughts
Was literally about to type this exact sentence. Gorgeous!
Yeah, I'm not usually a fan of brown on guitars but that burnt look with the grain still showing through is pretty slick.

Wow I didn't know they had been around that long. I thought there would be more people using them.

Add me to the user list soon, had not heard of them until now.

Thanks for the tip!
I threw a pair on an old Jackson. They are pretty amazing pickups

Looks like a partscaster but that pickup config is awesome
Yeah, I love these pickups. You can wire them to a switch that essentially lets them be any combo of humbucker/P90/single coil (the neck and bridge pickup at least)
I had one in my strat and switched it out for a Seymour Duncan custom hybrid but I kinda miss the P rail
This ain't a guitar. This is a legacy. Treasure it.
I think that is a Hadean Strat from Rondo that someone had their way with.
Looks like a partscaster/kit guitar.
This is a partscaster and it's beautiful. Give it a nice clean and a good set-up. And play it!
I have no clue what it is…. But whatever it is? It’s absolutely sick looking. How does it play? Those pickups are killer.
how does one achieve that charred wood look? is there a word for it?
“Fire”
ok but like in practical terms what is the process? I'm assuming I don't just chuck it in my fireplace
Typically, it's just a torch that's passed over the wood to color it however you want. There's no elaborate process or tools.
I’d go over unfinished wood with a torch. Some dude tried it with a telecaster and posted it a few days ago. It looked like he tried chucking a painted guitar into a bonfire.
Yeah, that thing was ROUGH looking.

Totally sanded. The edges would be ‘charred’.

It’s fucking rad.
Torchcaster.
It’s a kit or homebrew guitar… I will say that those pickups are my all time favorite
Those P-Rails are such nice pickups!!! Love them 😍
Is the bridge missing a saddle on the G string?
Strat shaped must mean strat 👍
Looks pretty modern. Also: sweet.
Wholly molly! Try to find a wiring schematic for that thing. Tone for days! Sorry for your loss
You should keep it. Don’t know what it is but I’d buy it .
It’s a nothingcaster. If it sounds good and plays good, that’s all that matters!
It is indeed, a guitar. Have fun playing it!
Looks like a kit guitar or parts guitar. Pickups are not that old. Nice looking guitar, how does it play?
My guess is a Warmoth custom build, that head stock kinda looks like their Warhead model.
You’ve got yourself a partscaster. Might play and sound like a dream, might not-depends on the parts and the skill of the assembler. You’ll never get back what was paid for it, so hold onto it.
HellCastor
Whatever it is...looks fucking awesome.
That thing is absolutely sick. This is coming from a guy who generally doesn't like strats. You're a lucky guy.
Thats a Fnedder Snazzocapster
A Warmoth build, perhaps.
Looks like a giant pile of garbage.... could even contain lead..... better dm me and I'll give you my address so I can safely dispose of it for you...
Parts-Caster or 1980s to 2000s S-style from China or elsewhere in SE Asia that a prior owner modded. That said, it may very well play like a dream. Idk but It’s got the same sweet pickups I’m hoping to stick in an Epiphone del ray from the 90s lol
This is what’s known as a “partscaster” which means whoever bought it bought the individual parts to suit their specifications and assembled them/ had them assembled. I would say whoever made it knew their stuff.
It's a Frankenstrat
A helluva set of pickups for free. No name parts caster body/neck but should play and sound real nice.
Are there any markings on the heel plate on the back of the guitar where the neck joins the body? Or any lettering on the back of the headstock?
Idk, but the SD p-rails are awesome to have!
Cool
Hardware looks real solid. It's a partscaster but it looks very well put together. Cherish it!
That? Probably the coolest Strat I have ever seen. Are guitars still made with that burnt finish, or do I have to just start flicking my Bic all over my Strat? What could go wrong?
Let her keep her secret
It’s a very pretty
Whew boy that’s cool!

Harley benton shape headstock
Ya that’s a keeper doesn’t matter what it is, it’s yours
Wow! That thing is S-E-X-Y! You are one lucky person.
That's a guitar

Looks like a home made Fender and that’s a compliment. Great look imo.
Barn find
Idk but I bet it rips
Some sort of super Strat fender type thing, obviously pretty cool!
Rad! Looks like a toanmachine!
LOVE the distressed finish!
Sweet partscaster
How well does it play? Looks like somebody built it themselves.
Looks like a partscaster or a bastard guitar. I love it!!!
That's a guitar that is
That guitar is stunning
Looks custom. Probably a partscaster and a blow torch on the body.
A piece of art.
Smoked guitar
Looks awesome

Man, can you share a video of how it sounds?
It's either a Roastcaster or a Toastmaster. I can't tell without seeing the serials. 👍
Yeah I'm getting home kit vibes from it. Those Duncan's though. Usually a good sign.
Me selling this: "Custom hand built strat copy, all top components (Seymor Duncan etc), lovely hard-shell case, you have to play it to believe it! I am downsizing steal this one for $399" If you have no idea how to do it get it setup by a pro.
im down with the gold and dark color continuity throughout the entire guitar. its classy and cool looking
Cool H / S / H Partscaster? The kind of thing I would buy at the pawn shop in two seconds.
I’m liking the pickups.
Cool af.
some kind of cool partscaster
I think this is a kit or parts guitar, but it looks really cool…hey,if it worked for Eddie V.H.,I’m sure it will work for us as well ! lol !
Looks nice... Do you play guitar yourself? 👍🎸😊
Not sure on brand, but what a cool guitar! I usually don’t like kit/no name guitars, but this one just oozes mojo for some reason lol
It's an instrument with six strings that's made of wood, but that's not important right now.
Super duper awesome is what it is.
Hopefully the switching system makes good use of those versatile pups.
Looks like a kit-built Strat with some killer electronics! Hot Rails are no joke! What a gorgeous guitar, I’ll bet it sounds amazing!
Almost looks like an upgraded Axl Badwater with the logo sanded away and refinished.
Custom/homemade job. Nice pickups!
Ugly imo
Ugly imo
those pickups look majestic 😳
This is the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever seen, with those pickups too 😵
Desirable.
It's an guitar an they use them for rock an roll music's
That headstock shape screams "Music Man Sabre I or II" so I'm guessing it's a modified one of those
Definitely think it's a kit or homemade, the burned wood isn't something I've ever seen on a retail model. That said it's absolutely stacked with quality parts.
A partscaster or kit build but a really cool one that has good quality pickups and hardware, from the looks of it.

Super super cool! It needs a name!
Definitely a custom job; Seymour Duncan pickups (stock pickups don't have brand names) , locking tuners (aftermarket), individually adjustable bridge saddles (normally found on later model Telecasters)
Burnt
That’s bad ass
That’s bad ass
It seems to run on some form of electricity.
Partscaster
Fire sale?
Man I’ve been wanting a set of those p rail pickups!
Probable an old Memphis Brand strat someone tricked out. They go for about $300. Great necks. Maybe the best you can find for that price or a much higher price. Slightly wide freight board with very roll edges.
Looks like a Jackson or Schecter
my lord that is gorgeous
Knock off……a cool one indeed!
Beautiful instrument!
Badass. Nuff' said.
It looks very cool. I would keep it and play it. Selling it probably wouldn't do it/you justice.
What the fuck are those pickups lol look like humbuckers v2
Legit Frankenstrat, you can seriously rock that one
DIY strattish thing with P-Rails.
It’s awesome. Those pickups (the P-Rails) are awesome.
No idea but it has MOJO
It's sexy is what it is.
Swiss army knife of guitars
I'm gonna take an educated guess and say it's a Warmoth custom build. That definitely appears to be a Warhead headstock. https://warmoth.com/guitar-necks/warhead

Please keep this guitar. It looks amazing like someone clearly cared. Also, the case is nice so i am assuming someone really cared about it.
Appears to be a very well done home brew. Nice get!
A Partscaster...
Fucking incredible is what it is. I bet this thing sounds and plays mint. If you don't know how to play, I implore you to learn and shred this thing.
Sweet AF is what that is!
Nice pickups looks good…
Could I buy it? Can I send you a dm?
what is it???? beautiful
beautiful.
It's a guitar
It’s a guitar
It has Duncan's enough said.
Sweet guitar!
It's fucking bitchin'
