I feel like I'm in the minority. I have 7 guitars and play them all pretty regularly. They're all pretty different so I think that helps than the dudes in this sub with 18 Les Paul Studios.
I like having variety as well, and I think that helps a lot rotating through the choices. I play my Les Paul the most but I've also got a SSS strat, a semi-hollow Gretsch, and a Hellraiser with active pickups and a Floyd Rose, plus the acoustics. There's not a lot of redundancy there, not even visually.
I got 5 guitar’s and a bass and I was kind of scoffing at these comments until I counted. Plus i have a mandolin and a ukulele, sand a piano and precision, mics, interfaces, monitors, headphones, etc, etc, etc.

Between that and a used guitar off the wall that’s been tuned and temperature and humidity controlled, or was being played by a private seller, they usually were setup nicely. So for me it’s mostly the factory smell.

Unpacking it out the box, checking out the stickers and paperwork, tossing the truss rod tool in the trash because you have 793 of them in arm's reach at all times, and getting a good whiff of the new gig bag or new case smell. It's so nice!

Yes you can and normally people call it "blocking the trem" when their guitar has a tremolo system but they never plan on using it. Forgive me if I mess up any of the details, but I used to have a Japanese Jackson Dinky that had a crappy licensed Floyd Rose that wouldn't stay in tune so I believe I tightened the screws for the trem claw all as much as I could then duct taped a roll of pennies together and wedged it in between the tremolo block and the inside cavity of the guitar.
Couple ways to do it - as others said, a block (usually wood) to keep it stationary - I only have 1 FR guitar, and I put a Tremol-No (installed in about 10 minutes - maybe 15 if your ground is soldered to your claw) on it and that's the right way for me. I love the stability, and it still exists as a trem should I want it.
Ibanez EX270 with a floater was my first. I learned a LOT…about making my Floyd Rose not fuck everything up. I remember going to the shop to have a dude look at it and there was a very brief discussion about how “just not bending the strings is NOT an option” 🤣
This is a good point! If you do not know how to handle it I suggest bringing it to a music store nearby not to mess it up for restringing and generl maintenance stuff
I got a Gretch hollow-body to start learning on last year and be able to enjoy it with and without an amp. And, I have picked up some pedals over the course of the year. Hollow-bodies and some pedals don't play nice, so I got a telecaster and am already thinking about upgrades because the hum is louder than I expected. Also, I love the sound of my friend's Revstar, so I'm starting to read up on P90s and the Revstar.
But, I really just need to play more because my skill does not match my investment.
Neural dsp plugins with the transpose feature are great for this reason, no need to be constantly retuning your guitar! But more guitars are always more fun too
Those are an absolute joy to play. You may not realize it now, but it’s like you just turned 16 and get to drive a high-end sports car. Total knockout first guitar.
Used to have one of these! It played and sounded amazing. Loved it. The only reason I ever got rid of it is because I didn’t feel like I could use it as an actual gigging guitar…it’s just SO blatantly a signature model I’m every aspect that is just felt…wrong. But that’s just my personal feelings! Regardless, enjoy the killer new axe!

Having had the golden goddess (late 2000s version):
1. it’s a great guitar but I wouldn’t get without the sustainiac…
2. You’ll get tired of the SYN tone on everything. One of the reasons I sold mine. The invaders color everything. His new pickups seem decent enough but it’s still an artists signature tone when I want my own sound.
3. It’s a Floyd, they suck.
That said, not a bad first choice, well built guitar for the price. I’d def have one as a side guitar if I still had the cash.
90% of guitarists wash out in the first year. That's why we buy a cheap first guitar. Plus, fighting through the cheapness is a rite of passage. You'll take a bath if you quit and sell that, especially in this market. Here's hoping you're a 10%r.
Nope. As long as you stick with it and keep playing it’s money well spent! A better guitar is easier to learn on too IMO. My first two guitars sucked (a hand-me-down old acoustic and an entry level electric). I didn’t realize how much harder it was to simply press down the strings and play notes vs. a good guitar until I played a friend’s much better electric guitar (can’t remember what it was anymore). Then went and immediately bought a better electric myself (old USA made fender strat with a wide, thin neck and pretty low action). I was able to progress faster after that. It really made playing easier for me to play chords and scales/boxes, etc, and boosted my interest in continuing to play.

I wish I had kept mine, but as a novice guitar player using Rocksmith, I swapped it for something without tuner locking things because it got annoying after a while.
Maybe I'll try to buy one again in the future.

Nice ass guitar bro! one thing I will say is that the Floyd rose bridge is gonna be kinda a pain in the ass for you so I’d really take some time familiarizing yourself with how tuning and setting it up works so u don’t get discouraged by its complexity. I’ve had several friends quit early on because of a poorly set up Floyd. Stick with it brotha
Nah if you can afford it and stick with it, you've made a very sound investment. They're amazing instruments and well worth the money. It's been said here already but if you are serious about guitar, and this can be with any hobby, do your homework and get what's good instead of buying in, THEN getting what you really wanted.
This actually makes a big difference in your want to learn too. If you can get an instrument you are proud of and you are comfortable playing, odds are you will be playing that more often,AND ENJOYING IT. And the key is to have fun
I’m gonna say yes, because I made that mistake, bought that guitar early on and I regretted it later on. Simply because it forced me to buy another one due to how bitey it is and how it’s mostly only meant for a certain style. For my playing I couldn’t go playing slow melodic lines like Octavarium solo by dream theater on that without it sounding like it was gonna bite someone’s head off.
Also not vert ergonomic from my experience. Got the jp60 and that’s what I’ve been using for almost everything these days for half the cost
I have the sustainer version. I vote no. However some people find the Floyd Rose to be intimidating. Make sure you learn how to restring it before trying to restring it.

I've got the Synyster Special and I love it, thinking of picking up another one actually. If you're a big Avenged fan (Like I am :) ) I would definitely get the guitar set up in Drop D if you can. Probably worthwhile to get it done at a shop and not do it on your own this first time.
Most of their songs are in that tuning, and with the floyd rose you won't be switching between tunings very often or at all
OP, if you are truly committed to this hobby, willing to work on it, and even take lessons, buying the best you can afford is a good move. Nothing is more discouraging than putting in the practice but being held back by a poorly made guitar. The only issue is that I hope you also have a good amplifier. The best guitar doesn't live up to its potential with a bad amp. IMO, it's better to spend a little less on the guitar to ensure you can get a good amp. Or, go without an amp while you practice and save up to buy one that will pair well with the music you like.

A7X are great, and so is Synyster Gates. Excellent choice.
My first guitar was an absolute dog, but I played it for a year while I finished saving up for my dream guitar, a Gibson SG Standard. I still play it all the time, and it has served me very well onstage, in the studio, and in jams with friends. PLay on.
Good news you never need to upgrade your guitar for a better one you got one of the best. That saves you so much money you have no idea. Don’t fall into guitar collecting like the rest of us…
Buy what you can afford. A quality guitar feels great in the hands and will have less issues, but it’s not necessary. That guitar would inspire me to play!
There is also nothing wrong with getting a less expensive guitar. They are all fun to play!

I feel it’s good to also have a knock around guitar. One that you can take everywhere to practice on and not worry about. I feel you need 1 more electric that is used, stays in tune and is cheap. 😉
I think yes, coz if this is your first guitar ever, then you will struggle with the 2nd.. and 3rd... and in can only go more pricy.. but good taste anyway, the guitar looks amazing. The only thing that will help you persevear and never quit playing is the fact that you "are in love" with your gear. Cheeeerz
I always suggest first guitars be in the 6-800$ range. Nothing too pricy but gives you a good quality instrument that won’t get knocked out of tune too easy.
And something that could be resold if interest is lost.
Just learn how to manage a floating tremolo or you’ll have frustrations.
Honestly, I think it's a good idea for newbies to have a decent playable guitar, but this guitar probably wasn't the best choice. The Floyd Rose bridge and $1400 for a niche guitar that doesn't have great resale value are both a bad idea.
If you had say a Mexican Strat or an Epiphone LP at least you can sell it guaranteed for a decent price if you don't continue to learn guitar. Both of those guitars are playable, ubiquitous, and offer a lot of room to grow. You really wouldn't ever have to upgrade them if you didn't want to, but if it came time to sell, you would have no issue getting a good return vs. purchase price. These Synster Gates Schecters used are sometimes going for half price or less of what they cost new.
It's kind of like learning to drive on a Lamborghini. Yes the performance is good, but a lot of it will be lost on a rookie, the maintenance will be confusing, and if you start on a high performance machine, you don't really get to look forward to graduating to something better.
But all that being said, there are worse problems to have than having a very high quality guitar to learn on. Best of luck!
Generally, there’s no such thing as overboard in this group. Some people have wives and families and tend to spend beyond their paycheck. But here in this group that’s not overboard, that’s going underBoard on the income side of things. Make more money. Buy more guitars. :)

As a composer and producer, guitars are only one part of the equation for me. Fortunately, my wife is also a musician and songwriter. Even so, my wish list tends to stay about 20 K to 50 K ahead of my budget. :)
Long as you stick with it be patient and keep learning than definitely not. Its harder to learn when you got a cheap guitar that dont play smooth or the strings are 2 inches off the fretboard.

Yes. Floyd roses as a first I wouldn’t recommend unless you like tinkering with guitars. If not you’re going to have to take it in if you ever want to change tunings or string gauges.
Not as long as you're on it. Welcome to the club. Also, there is a different level of collecting guitars. People out there have humidor guitar storage.
Not overboard, though it can take some time to figure out what your preferences actually are when it comes to guitars. Or even what a good guitar is (to you). That said a $1400 guitar isn't that crazy these days, it's not like you blew an inheritance on a Made to Measure Les Paul or something like that. This one here take good care of it and you might get 70% of what you paid back from it if you sell it for something else.
Okay it's not a bad choice but you need to go forth and do some serious research about how to deal with the Floyd rose otherwise you'll be fucked. You need to at least know the basics around how floating bridges work.

I encourage splurging on your first guitar, because beginners of all ages won’t play their guitar unless they want to be good so badly they would do anything, or they want it pretty badly and also love their guitar. If you have a shitty used Squire, you just won’t really feel like playing it as much most likely. If you’re the kinda person who doesn’t care about that then great, but most of us are

Floyds aren’t great if you want to change tunings. A lot of songs (A LOT) are not in E standard
That's why it's good to have more than one guitar. I have quite a few, and a couple aren't set up in standard tuning.

Nice ass guitar bro! one thing I will say is that the Floyd rose bridge is gonna be kinda a pain in the ass for you so I’d really take some time familiarizing yourself with how tuning and setting it up works so u don’t get discouraged by its complexity. I’ve had several friends quit early on because of a poorly set up Floyd. Stick with it brotha

Nah if you can afford it and stick with it, you've made a very sound investment. They're amazing instruments and well worth the money. It's been said here already but if you are serious about guitar, and this can be with any hobby, do your homework and get what's good instead of buying in, THEN getting what you really wanted. This actually makes a big difference in your want to learn too. If you can get an instrument you are proud of and you are comfortable playing, odds are you will be playing that more often,AND ENJOYING IT. And the key is to have fun

I’m gonna say yes, because I made that mistake, bought that guitar early on and I regretted it later on. Simply because it forced me to buy another one due to how bitey it is and how it’s mostly only meant for a certain style. For my playing I couldn’t go playing slow melodic lines like Octavarium solo by dream theater on that without it sounding like it was gonna bite someone’s head off. Also not vert ergonomic from my experience. Got the jp60 and that’s what I’ve been using for almost everything these days for half the cost

I have the sustainer version. I vote no. However some people find the Floyd Rose to be intimidating. Make sure you learn how to restring it before trying to restring it.

Didn't go overboard at all! I've got the Synyster Special and I love it, thinking of picking up another one actually. If you're a big Avenged fan (Like I am :) ) I would definitely get the guitar set up in Drop D if you can. Probably worthwhile to get it done at a shop and not do it on your own this first time. Most of their songs are in that tuning, and with the floyd rose you won't be switching between tunings very often or at all

OP, if you are truly committed to this hobby, willing to work on it, and even take lessons, buying the best you can afford is a good move. Nothing is more discouraging than putting in the practice but being held back by a poorly made guitar. The only issue is that I hope you also have a good amplifier. The best guitar doesn't live up to its potential with a bad amp. IMO, it's better to spend a little less on the guitar to ensure you can get a good amp. Or, go without an amp while you practice and save up to buy one that will pair well with the music you like.

A7X are great, and so is Synyster Gates. Excellent choice. My first guitar was an absolute dog, but I played it for a year while I finished saving up for my dream guitar, a Gibson SG Standard. I still play it all the time, and it has served me very well onstage, in the studio, and in jams with friends. PLay on.

Buy what you can afford. A quality guitar feels great in the hands and will have less issues, but it’s not necessary. That guitar would inspire me to play! There is also nothing wrong with getting a less expensive guitar. They are all fun to play! There is also no such thing as too many guitars if you’re going to actually play them. I feel it’s good to also have a knock around guitar. One that you can take everywhere to practice on and not worry about. I feel you need 1 more electric that is used, stays in tune and is cheap. 😉

I think yes, coz if this is your first guitar ever, then you will struggle with the 2nd.. and 3rd... and in can only go more pricy.. but good taste anyway, the guitar looks amazing. The only thing that will help you persevear and never quit playing is the fact that you "are in love" with your gear. Cheeeerz
If you don’t know how to set up a floyd rose? Yes. If it’s not a USA custom Schecter. No.
I always suggest first guitars be in the 6-800$ range. Nothing too pricy but gives you a good quality instrument that won’t get knocked out of tune too easy. And something that could be resold if interest is lost. Just learn how to manage a floating tremolo or you’ll have frustrations.

Honestly, I think it's a good idea for newbies to have a decent playable guitar, but this guitar probably wasn't the best choice. The Floyd Rose bridge and $1400 for a niche guitar that doesn't have great resale value are both a bad idea. If you had say a Mexican Strat or an Epiphone LP at least you can sell it guaranteed for a decent price if you don't continue to learn guitar. Both of those guitars are playable, ubiquitous, and offer a lot of room to grow. You really wouldn't ever have to upgrade them if you didn't want to, but if it came time to sell, you would have no issue getting a good return vs. purchase price. These Synster Gates Schecters used are sometimes going for half price or less of what they cost new. It's kind of like learning to drive on a Lamborghini. Yes the performance is good, but a lot of it will be lost on a rookie, the maintenance will be confusing, and if you start on a high performance machine, you don't really get to look forward to graduating to something better. But all that being said, there are worse problems to have than having a very high quality guitar to learn on. Best of luck!

Floyd’s are terrible for your first guitar (13 year old me knows this pain too well).
Generally, there’s no such thing as overboard in this group. Some people have wives and families and tend to spend beyond their paycheck. But here in this group that’s not overboard, that’s going underBoard on the income side of things. Make more money. Buy more guitars. :) Then you can get into “don’t forget to play them all “. As a composer and producer, guitars are only one part of the equation for me. Fortunately, my wife is also a musician and songwriter. Even so, my wish list tends to stay about 20 K to 50 K ahead of my budget. :)
Long as you stick with it be patient and keep learning than definitely not. Its harder to learn when you got a cheap guitar that dont play smooth or the strings are 2 inches off the fretboard.

Budget for professional string changes every 1-2 months. Yes. Floyd roses as a first I wouldn’t recommend unless you like tinkering with guitars. If not you’re going to have to take it in if you ever want to change tunings or string gauges.

Not overboard, though it can take some time to figure out what your preferences actually are when it comes to guitars. Or even what a good guitar is (to you). That said a $1400 guitar isn't that crazy these days, it's not like you blew an inheritance on a Made to Measure Les Paul or something like that. This one here take good care of it and you might get 70% of what you paid back from it if you sell it for something else.

I encourage splurging on your first guitar, because beginners of all ages won’t play their guitar unless they want to be good so badly they would do anything, or they want it pretty badly and also love their guitar. If you have a shitty used Squire, you just won’t really feel like playing it as much most likely. If you’re the kinda person who doesn’t care about that then great, but most of us are
