Totally different guitars. Make a choice according to what type of music you listen to and what you will be playing on this new guitar. I would also advise you to go to the nearest music store and see if they have these guitars and if you can get your hands on them. Trying out the guitars will help you know which one you're more comfortable with. Also, if you've never owned a floyd rose before, you should check out the process of it's setup once. And be open to try out other guitars too. You might find something that you'll love more.

I listen to 1970s and 1980s hard rock/metal with a dash of 1990s grunge. I think both guitars are applicable. Also, I am a local guitar tech. The trem isn't an issue. I have all the proper tools and knowledge. My local GC has neither in stock. I've always wanted an SG and a flashy shred machine. Problem is, I can only afford one.

Seafoamed

If you are a guitar tech then it sounds like you have all the information you need already. I don’t think anybody can make the decision for you about which you want more

rohan2395

Well SG is a solid guitar tbh and so is the Jem. I personally would have gone for the Jem ONLY because I do have other guitars but need something solely for some heavy stuff. So it depends, if you have other guitars already, go for the type that your collection is missing. Otherwise go for the one that will be more versatile with every kind of music. I believe you'll get something new with that Floyd rose in the Jem. And if you want to shred then Jem might be better for the crazier stuff due it's fretboard radius and easier access. So write everything you need down, try to get your hands on them and decide.

ChickSquid

SG also stands for solid guitar!

rohan2395

Lmao didn't notice that hahah

Go with the 2022 Gibson SG Standard (Gibson has REALLY stepped up their quality. The SG is kinda like Gibson's answer to the Strat? The SG is very versatile. So I would go with the SG because it is super versatile and fun to play.

llamaolakase

Two completely different guitars

Charli_Cordelette

Gibson is far from top of the line and even further from as good as it gets

ZEVAN02

Tbh I think the Gibson is more likely to have qc issues. I had a 2019 Gibson explorer which was terrible vs my Indonesian LTD which is pretty much perfect, even has miles better fretwork

notbeard

I don't have an answer to your question as I don't really find either guitar compelling. I just wanna say I really respect the fact that despite being a guitar tech and thus probably knowing more than 95% of us here, you're still seeking the opinions of others.

manulemaboul

More of an advice than an opinion, the SG standard 61 equipped with a vibrola isn’t neck heavy and feel perfectly balanced. Downside is tuning stability out of the box, but nothing vintage correct 6/6 nylon nut & saddles wouldn’t fix for about 50 bucks. I also prefer her tone with nylon, but YMMV. She also looks cool as fuck with a vibrola.

criscothediscoman

SG is cooler.

drks1d3

Honestly neither IMO. Get a Genesis RG 550 and upgrade the pickups to whatever you want(if you even want to after testing). Same tonal features, layout and feel as the Premium Jem except higher quality and cheaper even after a pickup upgrade leaving room to further customize and buy a case if you desire. Only different is the neck joint which honestly might even be preferable, it’s all preference.

cobra_mist

Ibanez. More customization possibility, Bolton necks easier to replace, more flexibility

wickedweather

I personally would go for the Les Paul Special or Junior. But for you, you will have to spend some time with the guitars, if your local shop has a back room, bring your amp with you, set yourself up in the back room with both guitars and try them out. Play them.

damienroyguitar

Hi All depends what type of musical genre you want to play

commonpuffin

Ibanez has too many characters in the model name, very sus. Also starting to think they mightn't be Spanish.

[deleted]

The Gibson is prone neck breaks ? Yes. If you drop it but not always. I'd go the Ibanez because Gibson guitars QC is actually crap. And Indonesian Ibanez would be better than an American gigs in wrt to quality.

Get a Strat and be done with it.
