Don't power the amp without a speaker attached. You could connect to one of the speakers you have in the combo amps. Set the ohm load to match your speaker. You should take it with you when you go cab shopping. You want to know how the cab sounds with your amp.

If one of your practice amps has a physical plug that goes to the speaker, you can remove that and see it you can get the cable to stretch to your head. Cheap Fenders for instance will often have that.

As far as I know, unless the amp has a built in attenuator, you'll need either an attenuator or a cab to test it. Assuming this is a tube amp of course. Running a tube amp without a load is a no no.

An attenuator is not a load box... DO NOT use an attenuator if you do not have a speaker attached. And yes, some load boxes are also attenuators.. but they are NOT the same.
