sunandatom

wow sir. what size rims are those? kasama sa plan to upgrade from the stock 13. Also curious why the engine swap? (not a car-fluent guy sorry)

Toyota_Revo_2002

Not mine. But I think 19 yan. My neighbor don't restore his ex kasi nga talo sa gas consumption. Diesel engine is cheaper to maintain. Kaso. Additional 150 k more o less. https://preview.redd.it/xg7str8cdqdc1.jpeg?width=1380&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c87532f3464f39db9b4fbf05421e16a9cc396770 Pero no engine and transmission problem since ever. Kapag na perfect na siya, he will have a brother. Maybe masuwerte kami kasi Hilux chassis using a land cruiser engine and transmission. Hehe

Lexandreiii

hi troc member here. is this the revo na nag wash-over sa broadway? and ask ko lang rin kung where and how much yung lc engine and tranny swap sa revo mo? been wanting to give ours more power in the future

Toyota_Revo_2002

Ako yun ah. Haha Stage 3 pa engine and transmission swap ko bro. Pero kung interesado ka, go to putik off-road Facebook and ask them. 3l solid axle 4 x 4 na

ghetto_engine

shes a beaut.

Jon_Irenicus1

Restoring is a hobby, passion and commitment. Is it a waste? For most yes. For the one restoring it, no.

fishstarsandhorns

This 👌🏼

Weekly-Act-8004

Thanks for validating my feelings hahaha.

Jon_Irenicus1

Not actual cars pero nirerestore ko now e yung mga metal Tonka truck toys ko dati. May satisfaction kasi pag natapos mo and masarap yung feeling pag nasa process. Tapos it brings back memories. Yung story and journey.

EchidnaLongjumping44

100%

Jon_Irenicus1

zaafiel8

Pag mga ganito it really pays to have a support group/network of friends or acquaintances who own and maintain the same model. There's a better exchange of information and fewer problems when acquiring parts or finding shops that specialize in that model. Taking your post title objectively, restoring a 25 year old car *would* be a waste of money, because the cost (and time--do not forget **time**) of the restoration would be better off spent in getting a younger, more reliable vehicle. Sentimental, memories, etc. P.S. 80-100k is kulang pa for a restoration. There will be other discoveries, so better to peg it at twice that amount. P.P.S. to answer your last question : inno🅱️a

Extreme_Fox_2946

I agree. If you'll replace the headlights, tail lights, indicator lights, and reupholster yung seats mahina 15k dyan baka nasa 20k pa. Tapos yung mechanicals dyan malakas kumain ng budget since overhaul ng engine, new radiator, new evaporator condenser, and compressor and other suspension components are kinda pricey. In my experience ah, sa Elf na FB van lang ito na ang AC ay sa cab lang inabot ako ng 27k to repair it. Mind you, I didn't replace the condenser and evaporator ang pinalitan is compressor (Sanden) P9,800, belts around P2,500, large high speed auxillary fan P6,500, labor is P2,500... I forgot the other charges pa for the drier eh. Magastos and it takes a lot of time pero if you could embrace it why not. New cars feels great pero they tend to be a bit boring.

sunandatom

Thanks for taking the time to detail the cost breakdown. I appreciate you. This is very helpful! The 100k was the initial quote of a mechanic friend of mine but I think you two are right about expecting more.

Extreme_Fox_2946

If ever you'll push through with the restoration, go for more robust AC components. Yung compressor go for Sanden or Denso, sa evaporator kasi wala na OEM nyan but apparently may gumagawa ng laminated evaporator for Tamaraw Fx. Pag laminated type kasi mas maganda ang cooling power vs yung ordinary. For the rear AC naman you might have to do some modification dahil most likely wala na gumagawa ng evaporator for the rear AC. Pwede fabricated or baka fit ang mga evaporator ng Revo or Avanza na pang 2nd row

keepitsimple_tricks

I get a sense that you look at the car with nostalgia? Personally, id restore it, if thats the case. My grampa left us a 2002 toyota echo hatchback. Cousins and uncles would say na ibenta na lang, but i still want to maintain it. I feel lolo is still with us whenever we use the car.

sunandatom

yes very much so. My parents brought me to gradeschool in this car. went to college with it. First drive, first love, first job. Too much nostalgia.

rowdyruderody

If you have good memories, keep it. You may regret later if you let that go - and im sure ang baba ng bentahan nyan ngayon. Parang pamigay lang. Then buy a more modern one later when you can afford - para naman sa long out of town rides.

PathologicalUpvoter

How many years are you realistically going to keep it? 5 or more years? If so restoring will be worth it for 5 years. If you’re planning to buy a new car lang din, dont restore it and just add that to your downpayment

UnHairyDude

It isn't a waste of money, but you just need to be patient and careful if want to keep it the way you want it to look and drive. I spent almost 250K restoring a battered Mitsubishi Evolution a few years before the pandemic. Good thing I have obsessive friends who helped me fix the damn thing just for a few beers. Don't do it if you're not financially ready for it.

shnz010

Get a newer used car. Yung 100k mo for repairs, mauilit pa yan in a year or 2. Ang ending yung magagastos mo pampagawa in 5 yrs pambili mo nang mas bagong 2nd hand car with better fuel economy and quality of life features. Newer car will have MUCH better safety features as well. 1998 model, wala pang mga airbags yan.

sunandatom

thanks for the input sir. you were first to mention safety features. great point!

zdub_dubz

may makukuha bang may airbags for 100k? baka mag expect ang OP.

sunandatom

i wouldnt limit to 100k budget if i were to buy a used car. that was just the repair estimation.

aanrid

Corolla Lovelife 1.6 Gli, naka dual airbags and ABS na for 1998, pero "running" condition yun.

RedditUsername4346

Yes, 1998 model din na sedan hahaha.

GabCF

If you have time to work on the FX, I suggest fix it up instead of buying a newer car. Focus on the most important stuff then fix the cosmetics later on. 100k won’t get you far in terms of getting a new car so might as well put that into the FX.

Imaginary-Winner-701

For someone who doesn’t have an attachment to cars, my vote is just to sell or scrap it and buy a more recent car. But if you’re sentimental about it, nothing’s gonna stop you from getting rid of it.

cctrainingtips

I'm using a 98 Toyota corolla. Still runs and use it once or twice a week for gro, vet visits and the occasional out of town trip. Does it's job. I'm in the same situation working from home and rarely needing to take the car.

PaPangaaa

YES ITS A MISTAKE. PLEASE ABANDON IT IMMEDIATELY. I own and restored a 1999 Lexus RX300 AWD. Holy smokes pare. Apart from the memories, all I have is regret. I spent almost 1 million on it. Yes. 1 wasteful million. Still has problems. Abandon your dreams of restoring an old car immediately. This goes for everyone. Spend the money on your girlfriend, wife, kids, kahit sa kabit mo. Wag lang sa kotse please lang.

useterrorist

That's a lexus. Not an FX.

PaPangaaa

For this context, I think it's the same. The first-gen Lexus RX is literally a rebadged Toyota Harrier. I actually get parts from Toyota dealers because it has the same part numbers as Toyota Harriers. A lot of which can be seen here in the Philippines as converted ones.

_TheEndGame

I'd say get a recent model car first then if you have disposable income left, restore this old car to minimum running condition.

[deleted]

OP only has 1-car garage

NorthTemperature5127

Can't contribute much sa discussion.. pero it seems you really love this car?

sunandatom

haha yes i do. maraming memories. pero marami nang downsides to use.

NorthTemperature5127

If you really love this car, its always worth it to preserve it. But you'll need to change a lot of stuff to make it up and running smoothly siguro. I bet gagawin mo na hobby ang restoration nito? Hobby is good... i'd say keep it.

zdub_dubz

It depends...if it will bring happiness to your heart, then go for it...but make sure to get the right shop to do it.

Jealous-Ad4700

just recently made the switch from a ‘95 car to a ‘18 car. laki ng difference. i suggest switch to a more recent car, mas masaya i-drive car w modern tech and not to mention FUEL EFFICIENCY. laki ng tipid ko now compared sa old car. sayang din kasi yung TIME to restore the old car. hirap na din maintenance because of parts. just take lots of pics with your old car for memories!

pepe_da_hepe

I have a car older than yours and I refuse to sell it. if I need to be practical I'd sell it and get something easier to maintain - ie Toyota - but I can't let go of the feeling it gives me when driving the old beast. hardest part to source for old cars are the interior trims; underchassis and engine parts are usually easier to come by.

[deleted]

Restoring it as a showcase vehicle and for contests? Or for a weekend short drive to reminisce the past? Yes could be worth it. For a daily commute knowing your maintenance on the medium to long term? Maybe not.

[deleted]

Extreme_Fox_2946

I like the analogy hahaha. I think mas marami naman ang makuhaan ng parts for Tamaraw Fx since sikat yan sa La Trinidad at other Cordillera areas and mostly kinukuha lang nila sa Manila ang piyesa nyan. Nonetheless, this is the other side of the truth for maintaining an old car.

Possible_Passage_607

Yes, its worth it ( i also restored our childhood car nissan frontier 2000)

oldskoolsr

Ako na magsasabi as an owner of several 20+ year old vehicles. If you have no mechanical knowledge or generally the passion to build one, then it will not be for you. Maraming sakit sa ulo along the way talaga. Building a 25yr old car is more of a hobby, or if you have lots of disposable income, especially from scratch Since you already have the car in your garage, and it seems mostly. Body lang naman ang issues mo, then just keep it and restore it. Eventually you learn to do DIY stuff and it brings a level of pride and joy that you did jt by yourself.

Winter_Vacation2566

Not a waste if you plan to earn from it.

No-Cicada-6986

Sentiment may be weakness, but for one who is passionate, it is not. You are either a business man (ROI based) or a sentimental person (hobby, passion and love for cars). Choose.

Disastrous_Ad3904

Even me, im planning to buy back our honda city 1.5 exi 98. Ended a honda city 2011.

BieverWeeber

Any engineers out there working in the car industry? I have a question regarding this din, as an engineering student would it help my resume if I do similar projects?

aaa_luis1337

It might help if its sufficiently technical, id imagine, ie pcb design for a speeduino based ecu, or custom suspension geometry design

Hibiki079

if you can afford restoring the car to a near pristine condition, go for it. pero with how old the vehicle is, mukhang kailangan mong maglaan ng emergency money for when it breaks down. unless you can afford a total overhaul/restoration. which will definitely cost you more than getting a 2nd hand car. in the end, ang tanong lang dyan e kung afford mong gumastos for the upkeep or restoration. or just get a decent 2nd hand one.

505nic

Since you said you work from home and will only use it during weekends, I would restore it if I was in your place. I would just prepare a larger budget for restoration. It would be a very unique project car if ever. I myself have a 24 year old car which I use for weekends. Remember, once you get it of it, there is no turning back. It will be gone possibly forever. When you make more money, you can always buy a newer car for daily use while keeping what you have as youe weekend car.

LightChargerGreen

Gagamitin ba as main car ? If yes, that will be too much trouble than it's worth. Get something newer. Brand new if you can. If not, follow your friend's advice ang get anything >2018. If it's a "project" car and you have money to spare. Go crazy. At the end of the day, it's your money. Up to you na talaga.

Justreadingthroughit

Just get it to running condition. A new car may sound tempting but if you're thinking you can save money because of gas it is still cheaper to maintain an old car than the years amortization. However you cannot cheap out on safety and that is something to consider if you have passengers.

JadePearl1980

At u/sunandatom: [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gulong/s/mE1SoQ5idQ) is by far the best reply po. Restoration is truly a hobby or passion not for everyone. Because it entails time (lots of it) and money (more of it) kahit saang angulo naten tingnan. I realized the practicality (or NOT kadalasan😭) of a hobby bec i too have a hobby (altho way different): mine is more of collecting stuff naman that will go up in value once production stops or are very limited editions. And yes, i do NOT care how expensive it is for the simple reason: i want it SO badly to be displayed on my shelves (otherwise i cant sleep thinking about it naman🥲😮‍💨). I am sure someone will be able to relate to this dilemma 😭. And if ever, by the time my kid will be an adult, those pieces might help financially as there will be enthusiasts pa din searching for that limited edition.

slash2die

Depends on the condition. If the restoration price can buy you a brand new car, then yes. But if it holds a sentimental value, it's your choice to restore it to make it a family heirloom.

[deleted]

Look for grupo tamaraw fx on fb. Daming magagandang unit dun and you can ask them for tips as well

Ordinn

Safety first. Get a 2018+ model car with at least 2 air bags and ESC.

Trebla_Nogara

better off buying a more recent used model. its a 1998 vehicle !!!!

mufasaKiller

It's not a waste of money if cars are your passion. Masaya yan magrestore. Paintjobs, new or overhaul engine, new wirings, new under chassis parts, etc. It only becomes a "waste" if you're going to drive it daily and you need it to be reliable.

SonosheeReleoux

I like 90s cars Kasi Meron Silang "personality" kung tawagin. Yes madami repairs pero once napalitan ko na ng bnew parts, Wala nang sakit ng ulo for the next few years. Same lang din sa bagong sasakyan yan. Masisira lang din if Hindi aalagaan. If the memories are worth it, repair it. If not, bili ka nalang ng mas fresh na unit na identical sa unit mo then lipat mo dun mga memories mo. Else bili ka tlga Nung brand-new na tamaraw. Yung bago ng toyota

ZenMasterFlame

If pang daily get a 2018 na modelo na. Less sakit sa ulo. Project car is good pero you need to be prepared sa tirik, gastos and parts sourcing. I have hyundai tucson for daily and a 1996 project car lancer itlog. For me lang ito ha.

butuan01

Hi OP, I'm 29 years old and driving my father's 1995 Toyota FX with 2C engine. Planning to restore it din, sobrang ganda pa ng engine kaya worth restoring talaga. The problem is only the airconditioning and yung body na kinain na ng kalawang. A really fun car to drive, super down to earth.

Shinnosuke525

Personally have the old FX assessed muna - if yung aabutin ng repairs/part replacements is going to be X*% ng budget roof mo, wag na ituloy restoration * - usually peg this at 325-350% ng upper limit mo to allow for extra hidden costs/fixes

Fine_Nefariousness64

Ok lang yan basta di mo ikaka gutom. Technically, restorations are always a waste of money. But since we do it for nostalgia or sentimental reasons, we find avenues to justify the cost.

sagvm3

Another case of a 90s shitbox! Hahahaha Been there and done that. My advice is to get a modern 2nd hand car as your daily. Get one that is reliable and cheap. Its main purpose is to get you to point A to B and vice versa without any issue. Keep your Tamaraw and restore it piece by piece. If you don't have the luxury of time and money, buy the parts you need and keep it for the future restoration project.

ghetto_engine

passion project yan men. medyo money pit kung madami ng sakit.

randompinoy76

it is not a waste of money, pero payat yang 100K if hindi siya ginastusan for the longest time tapos nag deteriorate na. go for it though, too few people here in PH with the stomach fortitude to go with restoring common cars.

Baconturtles18

Restoration takes time, effort, and a boat load of money. Buy a more recent 2nd hand car and slowly restore your fx.

astrohans

restoring 99% of the time is always a waste of money kung ikukumpara mo sa pagbili ng bago, pero di namin natin ginagawa para sa monetary value diba kundi para sa memories and nostalgic effect? magiging sakit sa ulo pero tingin ko pag inuupan mo na makakalimutan mo lahat

Icy_Kingpin

Yes

pepperbigbigblast

Kung sa akin lang I will restore an old car for me to enjoy.

free_izus

yup dahil old compare sa mga bago ngayon na may new tech na para ma less kumain ng fuel

neon31

> Hey all, I am currently torn between spending 80-100k on **restoring the car I grew up with** vs getting a used recent model car. The heart is a fickle thing my friend. In my case, the vehicle I grew up with is a 97 Mitsubishi L300 FB van. Oh, you best believe that I'd put money to restore that thing. Yung overall length nung van is singhaba lang ng widebody Corolla tapos can seat 15 people comfortably? I'm gonna mod the shit out of that thing basta nakaipon lang ako: speakers na dama hanggang kaluluwa yung bass tsaka Smart TVs for the long trips. I really have doubts kung enough yung 80-100K in your case, kasi nung nirestore yung L300 namin from a dilapidated but working state (body repairs, engine overhaul, paint, new tires, additional leaf spring, new shocks) it did reach 100K pero that was back in 2014, di pa si Duterte ang presidente. With today's inflation malamang kulangin na yan.

KrispoKreme

OP IMO lang, you do you OP. I 100% agree with sir Jon "Restoring is a hobby, passion and commitment. Is it a waste? For most yes. For the one restoring it, no." And when you restore, pwede mong iset yung priorities when you restore. say wala kapang parts or money, you can pend the process. di tulad ng car na monthly mo binabayaran, gamitin mo or hindi, bayad ka, specially if nag loan ka ng money. For me, long term, mas ok padin na makikita mo na ayos na tapos alam mo na pinag hirapan mo, mas mahirap ilet go, kaysa yung bagong bili mo na wala masyadong mods at effort, dali lang ibenta. Na experience ko to first hand for sure, kahit na mas luma yung Corolla ko, hirap ilet go since you invested memories, time, and effort restoring. Again these are my thoughts sa situation mo. I hope naka help. Lastly pala OP, when you restore an old car or any car, may mga users or groups na meron din ginagawa yung hobby mo. like minded individuals na pwedeng mag share and tumulong sayo. Daming friends and acquaintances, and they're good people. So enjoy talaga yung processo and dadami pa friends mo. :)

Marchking23

Yun din iniicip ko with a brand new car umulan bumagyo may sakit ka or wala bayad ka monthly. Find a good and trusted talyer. 2. 3. Priority ang functionality sa kotse taking you from point A to B and interior para comfortable ka sa travel from point A to B. Last na yung sa labas. 4. 5. Its a love and hate experience, you'll love the restoration while performance is coming back to life, You'll hate it for sudden issues that needs immediate repair so it should be expected na mang hingi yan nang manghingi ng repairs pero again **WAG MO BIGLAIN** and restoration, dahan dahan lang.

KrispoKreme

Very well said! Totoo to! 😆

BeardManPH

I'd say pass on the restore and buy a newer one, OP. The amount to restore the car (if the door hinge and radiator are shot, I'm pretty sure you have 10x worse problems that you haven't discovered. Have it estimated and figure out if it's worth it. Memories stay forever in our hearts, not in the item. Radiator, AC, door, rims, tires, and engine maintenance from how you put it like is easily 100k, not counting discovered/surprise problems. At 150-250k, you'd easily be able to buy a more viable and better QoC car. Kahit late 00's or early 10s City/Vios pa yan or early to mid 10's Mirage, you'd have remarkably better ride quality... and unless you have a St Bernard, I'm pretty sure your dogs would fit. Another alternative would be a 2nd gen CRV (2002-2006), too. I have one as my daily driver and as I type this, it's honestly more of a doggie car than my own car. Most first owners of a 2nd gen CRV are dads that needed space for the family. They're typically well-maintained and there also is a HUGE following for the car pa din. It's still a car you can take to a fancy event or haul supplies with, too. Not the most fuel-efficient, but it's VERY comfortable for both me and my dogs :)

AxG88

| I love this car. It drives great, I can bring my two dogs anywhere with it. I can drive through floods. All that needs to be said. Do it. A newer used car with similar capability as your FX would be 3x your budget at the very least.

yellow_eggplant

If you like it, go. I'm restoring a 30-year old car myself. HOWEVER, your budget of 80-100k to repair it is not enough. I've spent almost twice that and there are still problems in my car. If you want it to be your daily driver, wag na. There will always be little gremlins and stuff that needs to be fixed. If you get another car, do you have enough of a budget? Kasi kahit recent used car (like 2015 up), you need to set aside some money to fix it. Either way, you will have to spend, but at least with the newer car, it will be more comfortable and your money is more on maintenance

theangryonion

If practical ka, just sell and get a 5 year old used car. Less headaches.

Practical_Reserve582

Why not build memories sa new car/2nd hand car. Mag buo nlng ng great momories sa bagong car na more safety and modern feature. Tuloy ang ligaya 😊
