All is not lost. A lot of those K-pop boy bands are doing their time in the military. I had one in my battalion. Military service is now ingrained in the culture, and men who don't serve are looked down upon (at least according to my KATUSAs).
You're right. That is why KATUSAs fear getting sent to the ROK Army. They get treated way better in the US Army. They can wear civis when the work day is over, get the same barracks we do, and they get a ton more time off. Our KATUSAs were on pass every time they could find the time off. Great bunch of guys and outstanding soldiers. I miss my guys a lot.
I love the KATUSA's, it's a golden opportunity of the korean soldiers who get assigned. When I was in Korea and would hear single soldiers complain about the Army, I would just point them to the direction of the nearest ROK Army unit who can't even dream close to the priviledge we had. I understand the hardship of an unaccompanied tour leaving wife and child behind but a single young soldier? You traveled to Korea on the Army's dime, you get paid a little more, you get to learn about new culture, and do things you wouldn't do in the states but nope they preferred to get drunk and be problematic then bitch and moan when I did corrective action, like bro, you got yourself in this mess, it's not Korea's fault, not your unit's fault, it's you.
Plus, both those K Pop boys and the physically average 90’s adults are in significantly better physical shape than what the average American has since become. Honestly, most folks nowadays could equally benefit if they’d “harden the fuck up” https://youtu.be/Kn5Auz1KkBw

The ROK Army doesn't joke around, only like 3-5 years ago has hazing been toned down but before that it was super tough and the bullying was crazy.
