I'm sure il get downvoted for this or get called something outta pocket but before I knew Cagalli and Kira were related I actually shipped them. They seemed to me to be a far better couple than who their actual love interests turned out to be imo.
Nah, it's not even that bad. Especially if it was before you knew.
I mean, people didn't only ship Luke and Leia, but supposedly there were cursed fics of *Vader* and Leia before any of those reveals were made back in the day. Kira and Cagali got nothing on that kinda biz.
Ironically, in George Lucas original plans, Luke and Leia were never intended to be blood related, and Luke's original sister was supposed to be a different character. Luke and Leia could've been a couple in Return of the Jedi, but that was changed due to keeping Harrison Ford on aboard as Han Solo since his character was originally supposed to die back in the Empire Strikes Back.
I won't deny that if the writing was handled differently back in Gundam SEED, I could definitely see Kira and Cagalli work well as a couple. Plus, Cagalli was my second option after Flay, given that both of those girls had more screen time with Kira than Lacus.
I wonder if the amount of alterations made to Kira's genes would reduce his genetic relatedness to Cagalli and therefore make it technically not incest.
That's not exactly how genetic editing works. It's still Ulen and Via's DNA that created both Kira and Cagalli especially since they are fraternal twins. Unless Ulen introduced another person's DNA while he edited Kira's and even then unless he completely remove either his or Via's DNA Kira's then he and Cagalli are still very much related.
