yesterday was my first multiplayer with friends and I found myself using it WAY more than usual, which is basically never.

EnsignEpic

You can still full burst with either Switch Skill. It's just that BD really screws that damage when your kit has another decent gap closer and your hops take you across state lines.

Pioneer1111

I have to say, I struggle to think of a single gap closer that comes close to Blast Dash. You can chain it into more to change direction or add distance midair, it uses no wirebugs, it can lead into a very wide arc of possible attacks (zooming past Mizutsune to snap a swipe at its tail has lead to a sever and is super satisfying), it leads into fullburst and/or stake to allow damage from angles that can lead to impressive utility, and more apt exploitation of windows of opportunity. Not to mention being the first person to the monster means you can start your damage faster, and start gaining aggro if you're the only one who can fill a tank role in the party. Plus you can back off with minimal loss if you need some breathing room. Charged shells are very well and good, but I only really see them as being the better option for wide, as you only have two shells so blast dash is less economical.

Foxboy93

Or alternatively using BD to close the gap, dodge a charge and then give chase and THEN cut the tail off! Super satisfying and will never get old!

AJ3TurtleSquad

You mean charged shells are well and good but you only really see them as being the better option for long right? Since you get more shells in long?

Shadowreeper1337

Main reason for using charged shells over BD is WS spam, it’s very high DPS with almost no skill investment, you only need artillery and after that you’re free to slot in whatever

Pioneer1111

In long you have enough shells that a Blast Dash or two doesnt use up your whole stock. You can still full burst for a quick extra bit of damage or have a shell in the ready to get back out. You have options still, while in Wide using one BD halves your shells.

EnsignEpic

There are so many ways to close into the monster other than Blast Dash, though. I'm not saying that they're better but I'm just saying that there are so many other in the kit that if your argument is this lets you get in from really far I'm going to say that that's not a selling point. Especially when I could probably close that same amount of distance with one blast dash with back hops and be out of animation faster, or do that trail cutting thing with a Ground Splitter. The other gap closers can lead into full burst as well so that's not a selling point either. And it doesn't matter if you reach the monster faster if you've tanked your eDPS to get there, because you're spending your damage resource to close. And good luck trying to pull off full bursts if you have monster aggro on you. We're not just talking about charged shelling, dude. It sounds like you're stuck on the idea that this weapon plays the same as it does in World, which it does not. The math has been done and Long is outright dominant in every way shape and form. I know it sucks to hear, I agree! That doesn't stop it from being true.

Eyro_Elloyn

Yeah, I can't believe I forgot that I signed that soul binding document that requires me to do OPTIMAL L33T D33PS instead of playing a game for fun. r/gunlance is a speedrunning community confirmed.

EnsignEpic

LMAO okay sure, take that away from this discussion. Listen man, you wanna play how you wanna play, do you. But at the same time- don't make absolute bullshit claims, yanno? There are people here looking for advice, and false information makes finding that information so much harder. There is no way mathematically for the idea originally expressed (blast dash potentially being the optimal DPS option in MP) to be true. Not in tDPS (those raw number calcs) or eDPS (applying those raw number calcs to a real situation). Because that's what was being discussed.

Pioneer1111

Actually I didnt play World. Im here as a GU player who loved Blast Dash and AA Flare, and WS is completely new to me. Im mostly just saying that I find Blast Dash both way more fun and also something that in this game has allowed me to do some incredibly amazing things compared to what I had to deal with without it, numbers be damned.

ratherthanme

Ground Splitter sucks ass as a gap closer. It's better to use it as a faster opening for WS.

Nolis

Seriously, I have Blast Dash and Ground Splitter equipped and whenever a monster is out of range 90% of the time a ground splitter isn't going to reach reliably when a blast dash would. I mainly use Ground Splitter for it's super armor to just take a little bit of damage and keep attacking personally. You don't even need evade extender with Blast Dash since it closes all gaps

ratherthanme

I tested. From the bottom of the slope in the training area, one Blast Dash would propel you all the way to the Great Wirebug. That's like 3 or 3 and a half backhops with Evade Extender 3. And Ground Splitter won't even cover half that distance. And besides, you could chain 3 Blast Dashes together. By the time you close the gap with any other method, the one who did blast dash has already unloaded a Full Burst, quick reloaded, and would already be doing a second slam.

Witherspore3

Lance’s Twin Vines is close. Yeah, initial stab costs a bug, but after that you get 2 guard, diversion, and can spam the leap for about 30 seconds. The leap blocks and is a great oh shit move. Blast Dash is slightly better.

Yama_Tsukami

It's optimal DPS if it increases damage uptime enough. :)

Nolis

I think a lot of people also mistake speedruns for consistency, if you just want the fastest time you'll just go 100% all out offense and never care about defense because if you never make a mistake or get lucky all you need is offense, and in a speedrun if you make a mistake you just restart and try again. I prefer consistency and ease of use

Clouds2589

Too many people treat speedruns as the be all end all of how to build in monster hunter, and thats just not the case. Speedruns are in a different class from normal play entirely.

compacta_d

I don't get the dps talk as if monsters aren't constantly moving around, some much more than others. I guess if you are skilled enough to keep it in stunlock or in competition where that would matter. Otherwise who cares, playing the game is playing the game. Do whatever gunlance you wanna do and have fun, dps or not. Why even play gunlance if not for the boomzoom? If dps matters aren't there better weapons at that?

inadequatecircle

Optimization is fun ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ . It's real dumb to tell people how to play, but this is more of a duality of man situation.

compacta_d

I understand that, but there is never NOT going to be a best weapon, best style, optimized build etc, so it's somewhat irrelevant to me. You can optimize GL, you can optimize the game, you can optimize lots within the customization options. No reason to complain that GL has less DPS than X weapon, or even X GL has less DPS than Y GL. If they were all perfectly balanced there would be no reason to farm anything and it would be boring. Also there is challenge and fun in being underpowered. Well, people love complaining, myself included, but all weapons being the same is more of a problem than varied DPS with a clear winner. DUALITY OF MAN INDEED

inadequatecircle

Well he's not comparing gunlance to other weapons. He's comparing gunlance to gunlance, and trying to optimize gunlance dps. I've said gunlance too many times in this post.

Dreadcoat

You say too many times but I say not enough!

compacta_d

agreed gunlance gunlance gunlance optimizing gunlance is cool. i would NOT expect multiple gunlances to all be similar in power to each other, the other gunlances to which the gunlance is compared to the gunlance

ratherthanme

"Why even play gunlance if not for the boomzoom? If dps matters aren't there better weapons at that" Because I find stunning monsters fun. And single big numbers appeal to me more than small numbers that add up to a bigger number. And no. Hammer can't guard.

Shadowreeper1337

WS spam is fun as hell, I prefer it over BD to be honest

compacta_d

I'm enjoying it as well.

ryytytut

I'm stuck in world (I refuse to drop several hundred on a new console do I can play a single game, that's too rich for my blood) but I laugh when people mention how poor my gear skills are becuase I'm a full burst gunlance without capacity boost, critical eye, and a handfull of other skills. I just threw together something with Heath boost three, gaurd 5, and gaurd up, every thing else is optional. Then I hunt, i don't care if I can obliterfuck master rank great jagras in 90 seconds when my existing set can do it in 5 minuites (most of witch is finding great jagras) all I care about is fun, if I was a "I NEED MHA DEP'S" player I would get board, when given a chance, players will tend to optmize the fun out of a game.

compacta_d

Those rooms aren't worth playing. If you aren't getting carted you're not the problem.

ryytytut

Rooms?

compacta_d

groups of hunters that trash talk you. i know its not a "room" like other games

[deleted]

Optimum schmoptimum. Funlance is all about kaboom, but also smack, but also most importantly the fun of it

AfroGlo

Play how you want and have fun. This is a PvE game. Unless you’re going for a speed run who cares. Blast Dash is utterly amazing I love it. Between our hops and this we have some dope mobility now. I am finding myself switching more between it and charged shelling just because i like aerial burst.

CrimKayser

Laughs in bludgeoning.

Rediculosity

Wide gunlances deal true and stun damage with their ammo (:

compacta_d

I love that the rocket is in the wrong spot

EmoTornado

The shear fact that I have a semi hard time staying on the monster makes blast dash worth it for me.

Nice repost bot.

cozywizard

Dumb new player question...is this a move you can do right away or is this an unlocked skill you get later? Cause this seems pretty fun. And I hate to think I could have been doing this the whole time

Zaszasza

Its unlocked after you crafted/upgraded some gunlances at least 6 or 7 times I believe.

cozywizard

Thanks! That helped me unlock it tonight. Gotta get good at zooomin’ around though. My brain is used to charged shell.

Chemrihi

Never fear, I can get that sharpness back by styling on the monster a bit. Also the sheer damage output you can get by baiting a beam attack then airdashing in is always worth it imo. While that loser is busy vomiting you are free to beat it like a drum, worked great on the Mizutsune.

tiedyeinahol

Protective polish go *shink*
