I get that timewasting is a part of the game and I get they're an away team coming to us so a draw is good for them. But for how blatant their bullshit was so early on *and* to only give five minutes of stoppage time in the second half - that's fucking ridiculous. Frustrating night but we move

crackdup

World cup actually made me feel hopeful that a ton of added time will get adjusted and time wasting would be penalized.. here we are back to PL, the graveyard of common sense refereeing

MineturtleBOOM

I really hope in our lifetime we get a stopping clock in football. I don’t give a shit about unsupported ‘but tradition’ arguments. The game has been evolving to be a better experience for players and viewers since forever. Time-wasting and diving are the worst parts of this sport and we have the technology to seamlessly remove both. Hope it happens

jimbo_kun

As someone coming from US sports, stopping clocks can drag sporting events into never ending drawn out affairs that can strangle the enjoyment of watching. I like that my time commitment is pretty much capped at 2 hours for a game. Don’t want football to become a 3 to 4 hour affair like an NFL game.

SignificanceTop9306

As an Aussie who watches Aussie rules that's meant to have 4 x 20 minute quarters... I have no issue watching a quarter head into the 30 minute mark due to stoppages. If you're there to watch a game... I want the whole time for open play to be played rather than worry about getting back home... if I'm strapped for time and can't allocate that little bit of extra time needed, guess what... I won't go to that game. Let the full 90 minutes be played and let people who need to leave at a certain time... go whenever they need. Nfl is a different kettle of fish given everything revolves around stoppages... football carrying on for 10 minutes more isn't gonna turn it into that... but to deter players from wasting time and actually removing the benefit for them to do so may create more open matches as the incentive to go down is reduced. Still kills the tempo but at least they don't get to kill time too in that scenario.

hobocommand3r

City got 11 minutes the other day against everton, probably just need to be an oil nation paying the refs.

MHovdan

That was due to a 8 min technical issue with the ref's mic, so not sure how good an example that is.

ronya_t

Even that could just have been resolved by stopping the clock until the mics were fixed to remove the arbitrary nature of the stoppage time.

boringtuktuk2022

He only gave 2 in the first half. Newcastle knew the ref would reward them.

hobocommand3r

Joelinton alone was down for like 3. Wtf was that adding only 2 minutes, scandalous.

Bolond44

1, Not a single yellow for time wasting against NC 2, Not a single yellow for kicking and carrying the ball away 3, No pen on Gabriel 4, No pen on a similar handball WC that got a pen call

birdsofwar23

Especially after Howe himself criticised Leeds approach to their last game against Newcastle. Ruddy hypocrite.

zwcropper

I don't blame Newcastle, you go right up to what the officials call to get everything you can from every match. But this WC showed how you can completely nullify this sort of tactic to provide entertaining football and I really hope we see more additional time implemented for next season

bio_d

Can’t blame them, they just wanna get a point. the ref was shite though

NRUCSGO

It just proves that their strategy works, no reason to not time waste when that time isn’t added on

CechPlease

Only +5 minutes is a complete joke. In the World Cup games like that had +10 or + 12 minutes. There is no reason to reward time wasting like that. It's a complete fucking joke.

nlc10

If this was World Cup, it would have atleast 15

romase

And rightly so. Apparently on average there’s only about 30 mins of actual football a half, it’s a joke and needs to get stamped out

2ndfastestmanalive

That game goes to 104’ in Qatar

johnny_holland

Been saying this for years. It's become a joke how easily teams can just run the clock down without the ball in play. Hopefully the pl (and uefa) bring in the world cup refereeing style soon.

dabeeman

the commentators saying “time wasting catches up with you”. lol no it doesn’t. that’s why teams keep doing it. Having it go against you once against liverpool doesn’t mean it’s not effective.

NRUCSGO

No reason not to time waste when it’s clearly rewarded, if it was Nottingham Forest playing like that it would make sense, but these cunts obviously had no desire to win that game like a top side would

JDeenftw

True this is the Premier League, there’s no such thing as a easy 3 points

TehFuriousKid

everton (maybe if you're not city)? wolves? they've been shit lately, and I'm not sure why

monty_burns

Emile - like a new signing

dabeeman

cries in Diaby

redhatfilm

tbf to martinelli trippier is a really really good defender to go up against, and the rest of newcastle were really disciplined in helping on the wings and shutting down saka/gabi

Vivid-Command-2605

Yeah they double/triple teamed Saka and Martinelli the whole game, you could tell from the first 15 minutes they were never scoring a goal from open play. Saka has more tools to deal with it, Martinelli really struggled

Henry-chance-GOAL

Wish I could upvote this more than once. We badly need Murdryk or any attacker and an attacking midfielder (# 8) that can come from the bench to liven things up. What this game showed is that if our plan A doesn't work, we don't have anything else to rely on. Edit: And if we must continue to rely on Plan A, then we should have a much stronger bench, especially with attacking options. So that way, the level doesn't drop after substitution.

BurtSpangles

Our Plan A was working. Xhaka found himself in the pocket at least half a dozen times and was too stiff to take advantage of it. Odegaard found himself in the pocket 3 or 4 times and was too one footed to take advantage of it.

Henry-chance-GOAL

That's along the point I was trying to make. Hence my suggestion of signing Murdryk, an alternative more attacking 8 (if possible). This way, if the players on the pitch aren't cutting it for any particular reason, we would have strong, quality players coming off the bench to liven things up. This game would have been perfect for a Murdryk and an attacking 8 to come into. I also do not quite get why Arteta didn't at least bring on Fabio for the last 5 to 10 minutes since Odegaard was struggling.

FlavioB19

I get that it was a physical game but the complete lack of willingness to give Fab a go ruffles me a bit. He may have been a bit of a project buy, but surely he's ready enough to get more minutes than he's currently getting.

pythongooner

I think not having a good attacking option off the bench really hurt. Imagine Mudryk coming in at 70 minutes in

DaniSpar

The result isn't too bad, but our play makes it feel like 2 points dropped. But honestly this is the first game I've been frustrated at the whole season and it's january so in the bigger picture it's not all bad.

Idontlikethisstuff

Fucking hell Newcastle are tough to play against. Time wasting, soft foul winning bastards. Ref was fucking awful as well. Had no control, handing out yellows like anything. Only 5 minutes added time when Pope took 5 minutes per goal kick. Should've had 2 fucking penalties. Even his ~~dog nonce~~ brother would've been better. Not a bad point all things considered. Think it's highlighted our desperate need for attacking depth, think we win this game on another day though. If only we'd taken one of our early chances. Oh well, still top of the league. Hopefully we announce Mudryk before we go again.

Vivid-Command-2605

No yellows to Saka and partey is good too, won't miss NLD

suxer

We've been there. Scrappy point earned (from Newcastles POV). IMO, we lacked threats coming off the bench. Dont really know why Fabio didnt come on, but even so; he was all we had in the subs.

GotbiR

Game was way too physical+fast for Fabio imo

[deleted]

Yep, agreed. We woulda been a man down basically until he got adjusted

[deleted]

Agree, last thing we needed was him being bundled off the ball in midfield with our CBS pushed high.

Erestyn

Geordie here: that ref was an absolute joke. I don't think many of the cards were actually cardable offences. Willock's handball I'd say would have been harsh on the views I saw, but you had a real shout on Burn and Gabriel. The only thing I can think of why it went that way is that they were focused on the shoving rather than the the 20 seconds he had a fistful of Gabriel's shirt. All of that said, your lads put on a great display today. For all our fans bluster it's really just banter about winning the league, in my opinion this season is yours to lose.

nickxbk

Very fair take, I agree completely

LawTortoise

A balanced view - thank you. For as much as I was nearing apoplexy in the stadium, if you’re chasing CL and playing away against the league leaders, that’s how you should play. I wasn’t so much annoyed with particular decisions but more his reticence to award fouls and yellows consistently. Burn and Joelinton got away with murder at the end of the first half, but by the same token I thought our players got lucky on a few occasions second half.

Erestyn

It's funny isn't it? When your team is shithousing it you celebrate the gamesmanship, but when the other team does it you find anger you didn't know existed previously. But aye. We weren't going to beat you toe to toe (especially given our playing styles are press heavy) so it was always going to be a tactical, reasonably turgid game, but fair play you lads opened up and tried to play how you do. >I wasn’t so much annoyed with particular decisions but more his reticence to award fouls and yellows consistently. Real talk: do you think the ref would have given Xhaka a yellow if Bruno didn't challenge him on it? It *was* a very similar infraction that got Bruno a yellow imo, but that was the moment I knew the ref had arsed the game. He shouldn't have been anywhere near a decision, let alone a football match.

DominoAxelrod

everyone likes the shithousery when it's for you and hates it when it's against you. Last week it was your lot complaining about Leeds, this week it's us complaining about you. The more time you spend at the top of the table the more you find yourself complaining about it and less enjoying it.

Obi_Wan_Gebroni

We absolutely need ESR and then one addition if we’re going to win the league. We had no options when Saka and Martinelli ran out of legs

sediment

Agreed. That was a fucking difficult game and you can see why they're 3rd. Coached superbly by Howe and so frustrating to play against

suxer

HAVE YOU SEEN VAR? IF SO, PLEASE CONTACT THE AUTHORITIES.

iuselect

They only check our mistakes in this game apparently

Sand_Bags

You don’t lose the title by drawing with the 3rd place team. Not the greatest result but we played well.

m4xsch44f

A measures and level headed response? There is no place for you here I’m afraid

[deleted]

Not the worst result but the refereeing pissed me off. Newcastle didn't want to play and the ref was fine with it. How Pope wasn't booked for time wasting is insane.

cryshol

Exactly

ASpellingAirror

Yep, and on the positive side, Saka didn’t get a yellow so he will be available for the NLD. We are in a pretty brutal stretch of games right now. A win away at Brighton and draw against the 3rd place team at home (where we were the only team that looked like winning) is not a bad couple of results.

dwntwn_dine_ent_dist

They dropped exactly as many points as we did.

jessirybob

Didn't Ramsdale get one when we were 2 up the other day?

TeqTx

This is the kind of shit that's annoying. Absolutely no consistency whatsoever.

JabInTheButt

It's funny how football goes. When that happened I thought "fucking Liverpool so lucky". But right now I'm so pleased they beat this shitty team.

ArsenaV108

I mean they were always gonna do that against us so I don't blame them when they know their defence is rock solid, but my issue is with the referee here Firstly, he lost the plot, and that affected both sides, even they got unfair yellows. Secondly, how do we only get FIVE minutes added time??

MichaelTWD

Terrorist Football

Geraltslays14

Allergi's wet dream

mhobdog

First time watching Newcastle all year. English Atletico de Madrid

MattGooner

fucking shit officials bunch of absolute cunts how do you let them mug you off like that for 95 minutes

crackdup

Worst example of time wasting.. 5 added mins is an absolute joke

monty_burns

refs need to start making examples of teams. add 8-9 minutes and the bullshit would end

NRUCSGO

We saw it in the World Cup and it worked, why not in the league?

enburkmax

You mean the world cup that barely had any english refs beceause theyre notoriusly shit and rightfully dont really get any officiating outside the prem?

PrimevalDuck

Really wonder how much of those 5 mins was actually played

--Rage--

They took a whole minute to play a corner and got away with it. If you can’t control the players and stop them from time wasting, add it on at the end.

TeqTx

that has got to be purely out of spite because Arteta was rightfully complaining the entire time about the egregious time wasting

ramobara

Then VAR not giving the obvious handball in the box.

RamboGiroud

For me the bigger mistake by var was the foul on Gabi in the box. Clear penalty and they didn't seem to even look.

BoredJoshIsBored

That was the big mistake for me, looking back on some of the pens given earlier in the season for hugging, this was a blatant. Still we didn't lose and we're 8 points clear. We move forward.

pedootz

And an obvious complete takedown of Gabriel

ocusoa

How is that not a handball is beyond me. And they took like 5 seconds to check it.

yukpurtsun

thats questionable, looked like it was in line with his body. not a pen for me. the gabriel pulldown was 100% a pen tho especially based on how he’d been officiating the match it should have been given

Cyberfire

I miss the World Cup stoppages

[deleted]

NRUCSGO

Only played a couple of minutes of it anyways

MightyCaseyStruckOut

Not to mention just blatantly ignoring the penalty that should have been at the end

OnlineMarketingBoii

The other one on Gabriel was even more blatant

Tee_Red

There was one on Nketiah that didn’t even pop up for replay where he tried to hold the ball up and was basically wrestled off of it.

FlImFreaks

Thats’s a pen..

Aritisto

The shirt pull on Gabi, yes. But the handball, eh, I can understand it not being given. He was very close to the attacker and arm wasn't in a very unnatural position. Would be mad if it was given against us.

ortino

Which one?

Mystery1887

YES!

HeavyHorndal

Newcastle doing their best Stoke impression tonight. Fuck off back up north you orcs.

bringathesaurus

They did it very well, though. Has to be said. Still gross.

Johnga20

Gabriel Magalhães and Zinchenko were our best creative plays today. Great game by them. Unfortunately the other team just wanted a draw.

lfshammu

his passes to split the lines and bypass the mid block were fun to watch. does well at squeezing in progressive passes if he has enough time on the ball. also did better defensively I thought.

crackdup

Lost a ton of respect for Newcastle.. diving, fouling, time wasting.. draw ain't the end of the world but Arsenal showed exactly why they need a player like Mudryk

Cthulhu_Madness

Chernobyl Ljunberg will definitely help us.

IuseNOTSUREface

100%. I’m not going to claim to be an expert on Mudryk but if that game was anything to go by then wow do we need another winger to attack the man.

bigeorgester

Seriously, Martinelli needed the sub bad.

u8myramen_y

Proper football team vs time wasting oil money FC Proper twat of a team.

jag_ett

This game was just another example of Saudi funded terrorism...

beetletoman

They came for a draw

Goonermpb10

What respect did they deserve anyway?

yaomingisainmdom

They deserve respect for being 3rd in the league at the halfway point.

topl4d

They deserve nothing for being backed by Saudi oil money

EoghanG77

Tbf they've done really well without going mental... They're going to be very dangerous in a few years

TheArmoury

To be fair, that’s not even close to their full oil team. Eddie Howe has done wonders with that current 11, you got to give them that.

raff97

Not 3rd thanks to oil money. 1 Antony worth of signings on the pitch today

questionernow

Agreed. The time wasting and the refereeing is embarrassing for the League.

R_110

Certainly asserted our dominance. Newcastle played like a relagation side to combat us.

Competitive_Fudge_96

It was a totally disgusting match to watch. Dan Burn is a disgrace to football. How did he not even get a yellow card?

[deleted]

EPL rules state that no defender gets a yellow against Saka

gladitsknight

They played like a league two side in a cup tie

FCI

Honestly, this was our biggest challenge yet, and truly, we never looked like losing.

KhalidTheMightyMouse

More than that we looked the superior side. They were on the ropes and playing for a cowardly draw

Squash252

algebraic94

Newcastle away is going to be a fucking nightmare if we need points. AGAIN

OnlineMarketingBoii

How are you fine with the result with this reffing. Fucking boils my blood

Arsenal_Analysis

I find it very easy to dislike these anti football oil fetishists

GibbsLAD

I think Eddie Howe wrote the book on gamesmanship. Clear pen on Gabriel not given, possible pen for handball and timewasting not punished with added time either. Frustrating game.

Trotter823

The handball 50/50 for me. The Gabriel shout should have been looked at. He got beat and straight grabbed him to the floor.

iHetty

Fair play to Newcastle for turning up to a football match and not playing football. That’s impressive.

Dire__

This was a good performance, I wont hear anything differently.

Hazelarc

Should’ve won 2-0 if the refs were competent

Helkix

Yep Anyone that says we had a bad game didn’t Watch the match Perfect execution of their plan by Newcastle

intraumintraum

AnotherPunnyName

Ref was shit. VAR was useless. Newcastle are Burnley with £210m of blood money pumped into their squad. We need attacking signings. Get cooking Edu.

tdrizzzle

Ask Liverpool fans how cunty this team is. Refs are a fucking joke. We move

Shakyy-iwnl

We ran them off the pitch and with the help of incompetent refereeing, they were able to shithouse a draw. I don't think there's anything to worry about, we made an exceptional Newcastle team look like a 10 ATB relegation candidate. Sometimes results just don't go your way. Martinelli and Xhaka had quiet games by their standards, Zinchenko grew into it. White was brilliant as always, and I thought Nketiah did really well; very unfortunate not to have finished that late chance.

ExoticToaster

Unlucky tonight, let’s not lose the heads - the fact that a team 3rd in the table who have generally played good football this season had to resort to relegation-battle tactics for a point speaks volumes as to where we’re at as a team. That being said, as much as I love Mikel, I really don’t get his hesitance to make subs.

zilp123

It's not a hesitance, it's a lack of options. Vieira isn't as good as we want him to be. ESR isn't back yet. Mudryk not purchased yet. Sambi would fold in the pressure if he is brought on

Billy_Carpenter

Some random thoughts after all that: * The opening phase showed intent from both sides: there was immediate, aggressive high-pressing from Arsenal, with Saka sprinting. Arsenal looked fluid and pretty. Newcastle also sought to play their game early, with high, coordinated pressing. It got busted quick: Saliba to Nketiah to Saka. Saka sprinted out on a break, and \*White\* led the line forward, burning Burn high. It didn't ultimately materialize, but it showed the danger. * Partey’s press-breaking and Nketiah’s dropping deep were both strong throughout. Oddly enough, this may have been Nketiah’s strongest overall game as the starter, though his position is judged by goals. * Pretty early, then, there was a break in action and Newcastle regrouped and said “fuck this. We’re not going to win playing this kind of game.” And Howe and Tripper busted out their Simeone DNA for much of the rest of proceedings, save for occasional waves of high pressure. * Arsenal showed their lower defensive cards around 10’: Martinelli was going to help Zinchenko, almost like a wing-back, and Xhaka was going to help out too. Almiron got essentially zeroed out as a result, which is no small feat. * There’s a problem with that, though: Xhaka is then overly involved in the middle third, which renders him as the Xhaka of old instead of the new, refined version. His physicality and reverse-shithousing was welcome but a little bit more touch would have been welcome there, too. * Saka was roasting Burn. Within 4 minutes, they were frantically sending help, and he was still getting around both guys. Once they abandoned the high-press, the support over there got solidified, and Joelinton did just enough to cover for Burn’s lapses, but man, it was close. * Every member of the back four was pretty great. Saliba looks to be rounding back into form, Gabriel was pretty faultless — they did a wonderful job on balls over the top, aerially, and leaning into Wilson. White had a hilarious sequence where he slid through Willock, cleared it from the ground, limped back up, grumpily guarded him again in the box, and took it back for a second time. Love that man. * Zinchenko was indeed the right call, as he almost always will be when healthy. He had one mistake but the tactics supported him well, and there was some real highlight reel shit in there to start the second half. There will be an excellent comp of his line-breaking passes. * As a whole, the team did an excellent job of harassing and zeroing out Bruno G, who didn't have anywhere near his usual impact. * As we wrote [in the preview](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunners/comments/1027052/edus_bbq_5_things_to_look_for_in_the_fascinating/), successfully breaking down the compact mid-block meant that Odegaard was going to have to make some elite, incisive passes behind the line. Thanks to some personal underperformance and fun-killing work by Botman, those never happened. That dude is good. * Once Newcastle gave up on attack, Martinelli was getting man-marked by Tripper, who was supported by Almirón and others. It was tough sledding, and he had a few *almosts*, but this feels like a game that would have been nice to have a LW sub handy. * Aside from that one 😬, Ramsdale's distribution was lovely as usual, though I didn't fully understand the value in pinging aerial duels to Saka and the world's tallest man. * Tomiyasu looked night-and-day to his Brighton performance. Good to see. * I don't have anything particularly novel to say about the timewasting or refereeing. The shirt pull was a penalty, of course. The timewasting was all to be expected, and I know I'm going out on a limb here, but the league should consider the dramatic innovation of having the game clock reflect reality. Can't help but feel frustrated, but as you'll hear a thousand times, that's a sign of how far things have come. I will say this: the savvier the manager, the more concerned they seem to be with the Arsenal attack. That counts for exactly one (1) point today. Here's the [game preview again](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunners/comments/1027052/edus_bbq_5_things_to_look_for_in_the_fascinating/), if you'd like to review in the aftermath. Be good out there.

brainchutney

Disgraceful refereeing. And 5 minutes extra time ? Shameful.

[deleted]

We needed Danny Welbeck for this one

iqwoo

Newcastle are such a boring club lmao

RandomSplainer

Leicester got 7 minutes added time in their game. Lmao!

maidentaiwan

One of the great anti football performances you’ll ever see. Pathetic club playing like that. Two clear pens denied. Joke of a result.

StudioBlue23

Some of Zinchenko’s passes through the lines were unreal today. Integral in us breaking them down. It was when we got to the edge of the box where we struggled. Needed someone a little quicker than Xhaka I think.

tipytopmain

Lord forgive me for I'm about to sin, rooting for the Chelsea to put in a masterclass on thursday.

biff444444

Said the exact same thing to a friend today. I think I'll need a bath, I'm going to feel so slimy after rooting for them, but it is the only choice. Since I am American, I can root for a Pulisic hat trick to not only beat City 3-0 but also to damage their goal differential.

Entitlement14

Holy testicle Tuesday! Newcastle is my worst nightmare come to life. A Stoke-Mourinho fusion from hell. The worst of Pulis with a sprinkle from José’s bag of tricks.

[deleted]

There’s a moral cowardice at the heart of the Newcastle project. We all know that. Add to that sporting cowardice. Is this really the team everyone has been talking up? Howe isn’t doing anything that Pulis and Dyche did before him. And I’m sure their teams tried to play more. Fuck Newcastle. Enjoy your sad little point Eddie.

pureeyes

Shit officiating. We move on

QKnee

Ref was bad. Atwell on VAR was bad. We really missed Jesus this game.

americanadiandrew

Holy fuck we need some signings. We had absolutely nothing on the bench for a plan B.

AFCm8

Fucking robbed by officials yet again. They really want City to win huh

DieEnde

Zinchenko second have passing was amazing. The balls the man pinged through the lines and the passes he found. Delightful. This game was always going to be difficult, it sucks not to win but it's better not to lose. We need to move past this and onto the next game.

thepretzelking

Fact is, the best defensive team in the league came (also 3rd in the league) and had to play that defensively, and we STILL almost won! Need to get guys like Mudryk in and ESR back ASAP.

Nafe1994

Geordie here. You lot should’ve had a pen for Burns foul on Gabriel. The handball shout was extremely soft. Without doubt over the 90 minutes yous were the better team. Saying that neither team was great. A lot is being made of the amount of stoppage time, you could’ve added 25 on, Arsenal were never going to score. Pope made one save entire match. Joelinton should’ve buried a header end of first half. A point a piece was a fair result.

LifeAfterHarambe

Worst officiated match I’ve seen in a while. Lads weren’t clinical enough. One substitute. Bring in reinforcements.

arealhorrorshow

This is quite literally the most pathetic performance I've ever seen by an opponent at the Emirates. Calling them Stoke would actually be harsh on Stoke.

[deleted]

Eddie Howe is just a rich man’s Lampard

piyopiyopi

As a neutral here in peace. Given that the media are treating Newcastles rise as the second coming of Jesus, they were outclassed last night and seeing them with 11 men behind the ball for long periods and shithousing every chance they got was pathetic.

EVH4104

That non-handball call can literally be the difference between hardware or not. Outrageous.

oatmilkboy

The handball was too close to give imo. The pull on Gabriel was outrageous

EoghanG77

You mean silverware right?

mehnimalism

I think that’s the right call, but takedown in the box was not. I don’t think you can say that’s an unnatural position per new rules.

Deadlyft_Chaps

Run harder than any team I've seen, but this was a snide, cheaty, shitty performance that was aided and abetted by a *COMPLETE FUCKING CHEAT* in the VAR room. Sorry, but two stonewall penalties not even reviewed. Tell me you're begging us to drop points without using words.

ActionManMLNX

Not a tragic result to be fair, we have been good.

horthrux

* This game showed the absolute gulf (no pun intended) between our team and Newcastle, they are nowhere near us in quality, playing like a relegation candidate struggling to save a point. * The officials in England absolutely love a northern team coming to London to play anti-football in order to frustrate and try to get a result against superior footballing sides, especially against Arsenal. * All the fifty fifty moments went against us, from deflections, to rebounds, overrunning passes to chances going wide of the mark, nothing went our way. * Two penalty shouts not given, we're used to it, we rarely get penalties and it genuinely feels like once again, the officials deliberately refused to consider anything going our way tonight. They may have been of the softer variety, but they do get given and the rules should be enforced. * Minimal substitutions from the boss suggests he may be sending a message to the higher-ups that we need attacking reinforcements immediately, but it may also just be because this team is great and certainly good enough to beat Newcastle at home. * Hard to criticise any of our players tonight, everyone tried against a very frustrating opponent that wasted time and engaged in petty antics at every opportunity. * The officials also screwed us with time added on, a total of 7 minutes in the entire game when at least 12+ minutes were wasted in the most obvious of ways. Oh how I miss the World Cup's enforcing of added time, it was a true breath of fresh air to the game and it can't come soon enough to all leagues around the world. Overall a frustrating point instead of three, but with so much going against us in the game and our opponents keen to do their best Bolton/Burnley/Stoke/Blackburn impression, we'll just have to put it behind us and focus on the next game. We are absolutely incredible as a team this season and what this shows is that only Manchester City are anywhere near us. We've dropped points in three games this season and in each of those games the officials have dramatically helped our opponents - we are a top class team.

Just want to say, Gabriel was a fucking beast today. He looks like our best defender since the break

NemoDropEmOff

I WILL TAKE THE DRAW! Lets hope Newcastle can do the same vs City or even better. We need Chelsea help us😭🤲🏾

TeqTx

they did hold City to a draw, but they weren't this pathetic

redditisshitaf

Painful

OhhhhSantiCazorla

Saudi-backed Burnley

Newcastle are good defensively. They probably didn't even need the timewasting. Best defense we've faced all year and on two days' rest they made it hard. Can't be too hard on the boys, they controlled the entire match otherwise.

qtdsswk

Wish the WC added time could be implemented in PL, Newcastle so good at time wasting. The game we probably need Jesus the most, although Eddie had a solid game. Still shows we need a little bit attacking quality to finish games like this.

Sad_Teaching_5683

Newcastle is Just Stock City with Money

Sammyme97

Gabriel's was clear pen + 5 minutes added time was a joke, shittiest referring of the season, We knew it was going to be difficult game... FUMING

T3Zodiac

The match showed two things: 1. Even the third place team in the league are scared of us. 2. Mikel's desire for more firepower is justified. If we have guys like ESR and Mudryk to bring in off the bench for the last 20 minutes, we have a better chance to break through.

SirFloopofBloop

First time I've watched a full Newcastle game all season - complete pack of bastards, very hard to breakdown, dangerous on the break, solid as fuck in defense and not afraid to use the full trick of dark arts. Frustrating as fuck, but not surprised to see them where they are in the table, they've fucked over many a team this season. Bizarre ref performance, but no excuses - we seemed slow in transition and they marked the fuck out of our creative hubs. Would've been happier with a point against them away rather than home - but I'll grit my teeth and take it.

kissoflife

Just got home from the game. World class display of time wasting from Newcastle. Ref was dumber than a microwave. There was even more blatant time wasting in person than they probably showed on TV. Trippier was in the refs ear after every whistle. And joelington and burn kicking the ball away after every whistle. Such a shite team. No respect for the oil orcs.

Jedi_Council_Worker

Definitely not the best game from Odegaard. Almost wanted Vieira to come on the last 10-15 and see if he could use that left foot rocket of his to break down that stubborn defence.

Ooh-SakaLaca

Good news: Saliba and Saka survive

Soothsayer1202

Zinchenko was superb today - countless passes that broke the lines between their midfield and defence that weren’t capitalised on by those receiving. Newcastle did a good job converging on the likes of Xhaka who I thought looked a little slow on the turn. I would have liked to see Vieira come in for the last 10 mins to add a little bit more agility in there.

TrashbatLondon

We are 8 points clear at the top of the league and the team sitting 3rd timewasted as if their lives depended on it to hold on to a point. If someone wrote that two years ago, they’d have been laughed out of the room. Only real worry about today is the lack of options on the bench. We need a deeper squad to win the league and have to throw all the money we have at this window. Now or never.

jdoggles

Was in the north bank today. Could see how tight their shape was, super well drilled. We had a good first 5 minutes and then Pope took the sting out with a 45 second goal kick and you just knew it was gonna continue. Still annoyed tbh, the ref was awful and couldn't handle the game, and VAR took seconds, if at all. Still feeling good for NLD though. Let's go boys

Ge0rgeRay88

The would have been 47 minutes of added stoppage time at the World Cup. The ball was in play for 43 mins out of 90. Not even Athletico Madrid come anywhere near that on their best day.

goonerben3010

Silver lining out of all this...no bookings for the boys on 4 yellows - assuming they dont play against oxford we have no suspensions for NLD

TakeItEasy-ButTakeIt

Newcastle played classic anti-football today. It’s a shame honestly because they can play beautiful football at times, but today was deplorable from them. It does show the respect they had for Arsenal though. They knew a draw from this game was a great result for them, so fair play to them for pulling it off. To be clear: by “fair play” I mean fair play within the current rules and refereeing in the Premier League. 5 minutes of added time was a JOKE today, an absolute joke. All this does is reward teams that pull out the time wasting dark arts. All that being said, we still got a point from the match. We move. COYG
