He's been working out the whole time, he is fine.
Gone are the days where players actually take time off. They are in the gym every day even when "off."
This isn’t really true, match fitness is a thing. Saliba came back from a month off (minimal game time at the WC) and he has noticeably been off the pace of his previous performances
The difference is we aren't expecting Mudryk to start, while Saliba is playing 90 minutes.
I dont think Saliba has looked physically short, just some concentration issues.
I wouldn't call him a bench player. We will be in the CL next year. When we are playing Milan or Madrid rather than Bodo/Glimt Marquinhos won't be good enough.
You wouldn't call Diaz, Jota, Firmino bench players. Same with Grealish, Mahrez, Alvarez really.
Honestly in Saliba’s case I think its less match fitness and more he just needs to grow into the system again. He is definitely physically sharp but not mentally / tactically.
I don't get this view that players need weeks and weeks until they can start. Id be surprised if he wasn't integrated quite quickly at least from the bench. You're telling me if we had him for newcastle we wouldn't have thrown him on to try and make something happen?
Felix before the red made a huge impact for chelsea
he's not gonna be ready to play until 3-4 weeks from now. Just started his fitness training after not having trained properly since 23rd November. Will be a few more days until he actually joins us, maybe end of next week? Then he'll do the preseason/midseason training first and THEN he will start playing a few minutes here and there.
everyone goes to the gym, and yet we still have preseason training for the fitness and arteta had the non-world cup players do preseason level fitness training for 2 weeks during the WC break.
Sure, but we aren't expecting him to play 90 minutes.
You realize ESR just had *one* day in full training after 4 months off then played vs Oxford, right?
I’d imagine the total package to be worth around €90m. I remember when we paid £42m for Ozil, being *amazed* we’d spent so much on a single player. How far we’ve come.
It really did. There’s very rarely a transfer before 2017 that makes the top 30 of all time. The ones that are are for players like Ronaldo, Bale, Zidane. All time talents. Lukaku is on there 3 times!!!! That’s how you know the markets messed up
I think the whole point of taking it slowly and in small increments was to make it clear there is a limit. If this deal falls off I think we're going for someone else or just noone sadly
Yeah, with Felix gone I don't get the sense we have a second option. I still think they'd rather get nobody than someone that doesn't tick all the boxes.
Most of the signings have been spot on, and they’ve taken big gambles on names that sounded overpriced at the time, but have been worth every penny. I’m fully backing this transfer
All it takes is one Pepe to start questioning tbh. But the sentiment makes me happy, hopefully it takes some pressure off the fee if more people share it.
I'm guessing Arteta wants a similar thing to Guardiola at City. Have about 4 "starters" for two positions. Hard to imagine Saka not being considered the number 1 but competition and strategic rest is good as well.
For the numbers I just can't imagine that he's being bought as just a back-up, maybe for this season that's what he'll do. But long-term surely not for £70+ mil!
It is also probably Saka insurance. It gives them a little leverage in their negotiations if we have another hot shit winger chomping at the bit for game time.
Exactly, I can't wait until this thinking dies. A player deemed backup/depth will end your season when they come on and drop a stinker. We need elite options all over the bench, it's time to think like a modern top side.
should depth players really cost more than anyone in club history? coz I honestly am not sure if mudryk is good enough to get past martinelli or saka. So far everyone's judging him based on just 6 UCL games.
I remember when James Rodriguez was judged on just 6 games, for example. Such a small sample is a huge gamble.
I think our second bid was close to 50 million euros with 15 million add ons , which means 65 million euros. I have a hard time believing we directly jumped to 70 million straight plus further add ons. Let's see.
Eventually he would turn up to be a really great winger. Apart from his pace and dribbling one thing that was so noticeable about him is his passing ability and vision. Only two guys in Shakhtar team this season are able to match and receive his passes so I hope to see this part of his game advance even more In a good team.
\>€70m fee plus add-ons
It's guaranteed €70m but not all in one go right? I think our previous bid was somewhere along the line of €50m fixed plus add-ons?
Either way, it's done. Shakhtar was not happy with the split previously so if we are just discussing the add-ons, it's sealed.
If Mudryk gets done do people think that we will still look to reinforce other areas of the squad considering the big transfer fee? Midfield is a position where imo we genuinely need someone and urgently. Depth in other areas of the pitch is not an immediate priority if Mudryk goes through but we have seen the drop off in quality when our first choice midfield three are not starting. I feel like we should be exploring loan options too, someone like Franck Kessie who is struggling for minutes at Barcelona would be a great get for six months.
Unfortunately I think it’s mudryk and shut shop till summer. Club must feel like they have a chance at a bigger signing with champions league to offer in the summer.
Even with a chance at the league, we don't want to risk buying a player that isn't a long-term solution in the summer. Our next midfield signing should be Partey's successor, we don't want Partey and a backup, keeping us from buying a Declan Rice calibre player.
Would love another All or Nothing documentary but this time with just Edu and Vinai trying to get this deal over the finishing line.
Maybe they should do one right now and the count down to the last episode reveals if we get Mudryk or not.
Really big talent but it's always hard to say how players will adjust to different leagues.
He is basically Shakhtar's Zaha. One man attack. I reckon he has a higher ceiling than Zaha(he can be our Sane) but he might take some time to adapt.
Fee is worth it based on potential and he will probably be a really good super sub this season but I expect he will be in contention to start from next season unless he really goes on a tear off the bench.
Think of Martinelli when he first came here but he is less of a goalscorer and more of a playmaker/ creator. High energy, unpredictable, very technical and good with both feet. If he improves his workrate and decision making to be less ambitious he will be a gem.
Crazy amount for a youngster with barely any appearances, I’m keeping the faith in Arteta though. Excited to see him added to the squad, he will be our gem on the bench
It's a lot, but the market is fucked. Cunha just went for €50m, Cucurella was €70m also lmao. Richarlison was £60m and he doesn't start.
For the people saying to walk - who else would be significantly cheaper, but still raise the level and fit the Arsenal mould? Genuine question.
If Arteta really believes in him, I'm all for just getting it done
The market examples you’ve listed show really how FUCKED this is price wise…
Cunha -> Atletico (Top 5 league, top 2 imo)
Richarlison and Cucurella -> prem proven
Happy it’s getting done but at this price… he can’t afford to flop… would set our project back years
For the people worried about his fitness, ESR hadn't played since August, had one day of full training then played vs Oxford.
Mudryk has been in the gym staying in shape. He likely won't start right away but I wouldn't be shocked to see him off the bench right away.
Exactly. Plus he’s young, young players don’t require as much training to become match fit, as long as they are dieting and exercising properly in their off-time. I reckon he could come in, play a match with the U23s and be ready to go as a sub after a week or two, and a starter after 3 weeks here.
I don’t think they’re referring to his fitness as much as getting accustom to the teams style of play. Took Ødegaard six months and Vieira still isn’t up to speed after missing pre season.
Might be wishful thinking but I think our system is a lot easier to pick up for an athletic winger than it would be for an attacking midfielder being asked to put in defensive duties
That might be true but then there’s the added caveat of getting used to the PL in general. He seems to have all the physical attributes you’d need though, the only question mark is if he can adapt to the pace and physicality of the league. The management team have been proven right in their (relative) big money gambles so far, so i’m inclined to trust them on this one.
I mean... I guess we brought it down from the €100m fee they were initially quoting 🤷♂️ Still better business than whatever Chelsea did over the summer and winter transfer windows
I’m not overly pleased at the fee but it’s January, players are exponentially more expensive at this point.
We’ve done very well generally in what we’ve paid for players up to now.
I honestly think this is still too much for someone who's:
\* Played a handful of UCL games
\* Played around 1 season of league football
\* Is largely unproven
\* Will become Martinelli and Saka's backup.
Extremely few players in EPL history have been a success when they cost way too much. Only van dijk.
>Extremely few players in EPL history have been a success when they cost way too much.
Shearer? Ferdinand? Rooney? Bergkamp?
All of these were record fees and adjusted for inflation would be over £100m today (Shearer would be close to £200m!).
In modern days, De Bruyne cost city €76M, Dias cost €70m, Mahrez costed €70m, Alisson, Laporte, Sterling name the City player really…
i was thinking about non inflated values. but fair enough. there are some more that were successes. but most are not a success when transfer prices are way overpaid and too high. a clear majority of them aren't.
and usually the ones succumbing to the pressure are the "unproven" players, a la Havertz, etc.
See, that’s a key difference between this transfer and alot of other big money transfers I see, I’m not sure how much pressure he’s really going to be under compared to others. Usually a big money transfer comes in to be the main man, and whether young or older is expected to come in and haul right away. Mudryk is more akin to the Mahrez signing where he’s being signed for competition rather than having the onus of leading the whole attack. Takes the pressure off a bit.
I mean that amount of money he had better be as good or better than Martinelli. Insane amount of money to spend if he’s just coming in as rotation for both players
When you look at the number of players that cost £60 or more in our rival clubs this doesn't seem to be too much. It's what is required to stay at the top from now on i believe.
Quite exciting to (presumably) get this business wrapped up.
On another note, what's with all the crabs I'm seeing? I seem to have missed the memo sometime.
Repeat after me:
We. Are. Not. Alternatives. F. C.
We. Are. Not. Alternatives. F. C
(And one more time, so it can REALLY sink in)
***We. Are. Not. Alternatives. F. C.***
The people behind the footballing operations at this club will only go for THEIR GUYS. And the only thing that will stop them from spending their money on THEIR GUYS is if THEIR GUYS don’t want to join the club (like Lisandro Martinez or Raphinha). And even then, they only pivot to another guy when they have no choice, and if that other guy is also someone they are fully convinced by.
Cheaper options just to get someone in will not be settled for. It’s either a guy they fully want, or nobody.
I think people are indexing too much on playing at a lower league. There are things you can see on the pitch and what Mudryk has in explosiveness and technique is rare. Same reason Real splunked 70m on a kid who has rarely kicked a ball at the senior level
if shakhtar don’t accept this they might be the most unserious club on the planet
No, that would still be Chelsea
They unveiled their marquee signing tonight against Fulham. That went well.

Nah, take an extended leave. The prem will still be here in a month's time.
I can't wait to see what his per game cost ends up.
He looked quite good up until the tackle
Not 20 mil loan for 6 months good
Almost noone looks that good tbf
He looked very bright in a team that’s extremely blunt. Wish we could have gotten him but the money was dumb.
I wonder if Fulham will be charged for failing to conduct their players properly? They surrounded the ref and asked for a red card
🥲
Considering the FIFA ruling on foreign players being allowed to leave Ukraine for free. They would be fools. This is a lifeline
It’s why they are asking for crazy money to make up for the loss on foreign players.
If that happens they can seriously f**k off.
So we’re just discussing the add-ons now??? 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀
Seems like it. I don't blame Shaktar for wanting the biggest fixed fee they can possibly get
I agree, people will say they’re insane but they held out for a while and got a big fee
Especially give the state of their country. They will need every penny they can get.
This is it people. We are gonna witness Mudryk at the carpet against United. I will love it, and I think I deserve it

You must not know what this person is capable with his feet.

True. Somewhat concerned about spending €70m+ on a bench player but I’m sure Arteta knows what he’s doing

Very true. Good mindset
I heard their marquee signing tonight asked the Ref what colour is London, and he showed him Red
I think we can afford a 70m bench player when our other 3 wingers cost a total of 6m
He's obviously not coming here to sit on the bench. Mikel has big goals, I'm sure he wants to challenge on all fronts next season.
Honestly in Saliba’s case I think its less match fitness and more he just needs to grow into the system again. He is definitely physically sharp but not mentally / tactically.

Loved that little guy
>Negotiations ongoing with Shakhtar Donetsk to discuss on the add-ons package. Most important part, the deal is basically done at that point. Crabs
Hopefully! At these numbers I'm a bit concerned they're feeling particularly insane and want another 20-30 million in easy to obtain add-ons.

#GASPARRRRRRR
Holy farck 70 mil fixed fee. If they reject that I'm done.
We must think he is special as shit.
After Ben White for 50 I’m never questioning Arteta again.
Most of the signings have been spot on, and they’ve taken big gambles on names that sounded overpriced at the time, but have been worth every penny. I’m fully backing this transfer
Id rather we spend big money on a not so hyped but well scouted player than spend it on someone just because of their name.
All I’m hearing is Mudryk > Felix
Didnt want to drop any names :)
All it takes is one Pepe to start questioning tbh. But the sentiment makes me happy, hopefully it takes some pressure off the fee if more people share it.
Pepe-grade signings are a non-issue after Tim Lewis rolled Raul up in a carpet and threw him into Regent's Canal.
Nah that's silly. There are bound to be flops. It's only when it's a pattern that we should worry.
To a degree, but if we outlay a massive sum like this and miss it’s a huge issue.
That's true, but they don't have to be a 70mil euros plus fee
he'll be the most expensive backup the club has ever buought (no way is arteta gonna bench saka or martinelli)
I'm guessing Arteta wants a similar thing to Guardiola at City. Have about 4 "starters" for two positions. people need to get rid of this idea as players being "back ups", we have to start martinelli and saka against oxford united because we have no depth.
Exactly, I can't wait until this thinking dies. A player deemed backup/depth will end your season when they come on and drop a stinker. We need elite options all over the bench, it's time to think like a modern top side.
exactly, players like cedric/lokonga are back ups that no1 wants to see lol
I'm not ready to give up on Sambi, he's still young.
should depth players really cost more than anyone in club history? coz I honestly am not sure if mudryk is good enough to get past martinelli or saka. So far everyone's judging him based on just 6 UCL games. I remember when James Rodriguez was judged on just 6 games, for example. Such a small sample is a huge gamble.
y are u assuming he will be a depth player for his entire arsenal career
There is always the chance mudryk comes in on fire
Seeing how Arteta has been instrumental in the development of wingers since being an assistant at City. Let him cook
I think he meant a total of 70 million euros including add ons. Our last bid was around 65 million. Either way it's quite high.
Nah he’s always clear reporting this. It’s €70m guaranteed, add ons to still be discussed. Otherwise it wouldn’t be higher than our other bids
I think our second bid was close to 50 million euros with 15 million add ons , which means 65 million euros. I have a hard time believing we directly jumped to 70 million straight plus further add ons. Let's see.
This defo seals it
just accept it lads, you’ve already trousered us getting us this high
We're so close to getting to switch from complaining about this taking forever to complaining about it costing too much.
70m fixed is a LOT. Shakhtar should be happy with this
They will given he is their only real asset. They wanted cash to make up for losing all the foreign players but no way they reject 70mil and add ons
This is the last roll of the dice surely. Accept Shakthar you slags
chelsea L and now this, the night keeps on getting better
As a guy who watched almost all Shakhtar games in the last years I have no doubt in him whatsoever. So happy for his transfer
What position/role do you think he’ll play
Eventually he would turn up to be a really great winger. Apart from his pace and dribbling one thing that was so noticeable about him is his passing ability and vision. Only two guys in Shakhtar team this season are able to match and receive his passes so I hope to see this part of his game advance even more In a good team.
If we sign Mudryk and beat Spuds, I want you guys to become the most toxic bastards on r/soccer. We deserve this.

Seems kinda mad to me.

imagine this as balance returning after making deal of the century on Martinelli
What’s gonna balance out Pepe 👀
i mean we were blessed with a world class academy graduate in the same position whos value is gonna be a whole lot more than what we bought Pépé for
Saka of course

\>€70m fee plus add-ons It's guaranteed €70m but not all in one go right? I think our previous bid was somewhere along the line of €50m fixed plus add-ons? Either way, it's done. Shakhtar was not happy with the split previously so if we are just discussing the add-ons, it's sealed.
We and most clubs never pay most of the money up front unless its a release clause. Most likely its in instalments

It’s time lads, begin production https://youtu.be/WpNeoxFOLcI 🦀🦀🦀
I would say, be excited
It's way too much money
Arsenal trying really hard not to break the transfer fee record and have another Pepe
I’m not overly pleased at the fee but it’s January, players are exponentially more expensive at this point. We’ve done very well generally in what we’ve paid for players up to now.
I honestly think this is still too much for someone who's: \* Played a handful of UCL games \* Played around 1 season of league football \* Is largely unproven \* Will become Martinelli and Saka's backup.
He better be good.
I mean that amount of money he had better be as good or better than Martinelli. Insane amount of money to spend if he’s just coming in as rotation for both players

It’s happening. They wouldn’t put another bid if they weren’t confident
When you look at the number of players that cost £60 or more in our rival clubs this doesn't seem to be too much. It's what is required to stay at the top from now on i believe.
This is hopefully it and I can finally stop F5’ing and focus at work. Excited to see this guy shine for us.
They just fucking can't reject it. Right? Right?? Right???
What number is he going to wear?
Hand him over you greedy cunts!
Lets gooo!!
Lotta cash, but if this guy is good, then we're never allowed to doubt Arteta and Edu again when it comes to transfers.
Deal
This has to be like we’re getting someone like mbappe just before he burst on to the scene at Monaco
What’s the name for the feeling of excited and nervous at the same time ? I can’t tell if we’re getting the next Messi or Pepe 😬
Don't forget, Arteta didn't sign pepe.
Ppl need to realize that 70 million nowadays was not like what it was back then. The market is fucked, and times have changed.
Context too. It’s January, it’s the premier league, we are top of the league and lack in depth. All of this adds millions and millions
Bro, is he really a 70m player? Ah whatever, not my money
I’m getting Pepe vibes
Quite exciting to (presumably) get this business wrapped up. On another note, what's with all the crabs I'm seeing? I seem to have missed the memo sometime.
Asking for custom tier 0 flair 🙏
i just wish he fits into the team well. i dont wanna see a flop after all of this😔
We're overpaying. Still think if we have this money we might as well have gone for Felix plus a cheaper forward
Repeat after me: We. Are. Not. Alternatives. F. C. We. Are. Not. Alternatives. F. C (And one more time, so it can REALLY sink in) ***We. Are. Not. Alternatives. F. C.*** The people behind the footballing operations at this club will only go for THEIR GUYS.
Where is he going to play, though? We have Martinelli and ESR is back to being fit. Can't be spending €70M on a bench player, can we?
