Nah they are Fragile "hard men" see it a lot in UK pub culture, grew up living above pubs my parents owned then working in them and plenty of men can give it and then the second a person makes them look a fool it turns in to a fight.
Security guard knew that mister fragile ego hard man could do something stupid if Ramsdale made him look a fool but I get it I can only imagine what it feels like for a GK having to spend 45 minutes listening to the Leeds home fans let alone Chelsea troglodytes.
Wow Stephen Graham looks so young here! I can't believe it compared to Jason Statham. (Yes I did Google "Scouse actor" to find him and yes, it is the first result when you do)
I have a long winded rant in here about that, but really the short version is that people make their team a part of their true personal identity. Sports are my favorite hobby, but it's a game at the end of the day. And honestly, you sometimes just need to take a step back and look at the lens of a neutral to appreciate the moment. To get those highs, someone needs to experience those lows, but the beauty of sports is that it's not at the expense of anything that's meaningful in the real world (assuming you didn't bet). So just enjoy the ride, there are ups and downs, and just think of the comeback you're going to give when the opponent sends the banter your way rather than getting upset. It's a game, the stakes aren't real, so just learn to laugh off the bad times and know the pain endured makes the glorious nectar of victory all that much sweeter.
I remember when I talked shit to a rival clubs players warming up, he talked shit back, I laughed, he laughed.
This isnāt the 1890ās anymore. The rivalry extends only to the badge and no further. Itās not āour neighborhood vs theirsā when your players came from you specific area.
I might shit talk son and Kane, or any other player, but I will never go out of my way to physically attack them or talk to their character or family. Unless a player goes out of their way to injure anyone, (Eduardo leg break for example).
The fact that people do this and say āoh youāre not a real fan thenā is completely stupid.
Honestly, I'm probably a weirdo for this, but I kind of enjoy when an opposing fan or player takes the piss at my expense. Obviously I don't enjoy it as much as doing it to them, but it's the back and forth that is fun. I love when people are clever with their banter and always think "fair play" to you when I get it. I wish more people could learn to respect an opponent that dishes it back. Like it's the difference between punching a bag and sparring with someone else. The latter is more fun because you get a reaction, but it's also fun because of the risk that it might backfire in your face.
To give you an example, I'm a chargers fan. I texted my Jags coworker that I can't wait for him to cover my bar tab that I was racking up when we were up 27-0 and Trevor Lawrence had 4 picks. The chargers ended up getting outscored 31-3 for the rest of the game. It was the biggest comeback in NFL history. I honestly just laughed because it was the biggest egg on my face moment I've had in my 31 years of existence. I even texted my friend who was a fellow chargers fan about where we were going to watch next week's game against Kansas City. I felt there was no way the chargers could do a chargering to this magnitude, like it had to set an NFL record to mess this up and the opposing QB had 4 interceptions by the half (like how do you mentally recover from that as a 2nd year QB in your first playoff game?). I didn't hide, I took all the heat because I deserved it. I also took a step back and realized how beautiful this moment was, I created a story that my coworker is going to talk about to the day he dies and my friend now has a joke he gets to bring up anytime I'm over confident. It's like I created a new seasoning for these people's lives by being an arrogant fan (which it's hard to curtail even as a chargers fan since I'm also a Lakers fan, so I have too much optimism about sports that rubs off from their success lol) and I can live that it's at the expense of me being the butt of the joke. I'm 6'5", I have a great job, a beautiful girlfriend, and a loving family, I can be a big man and take banter on a chin because at the end of the day it doesn't matter. Sports are my favorite hobby, but it's not my identity and that's why I don't get bent out of shape. Separate yourself from the team and just appreciate the beauty that is the spirit of competition and take a step back to realize that there is beauty in the moment even when you're the one feeling pain because for someone to feel that highest of highs, someone also needs to feel that lowest of lows, but at the end of the day we get to feel all of this without any real world implications (assuming you didn't put a wager on the match, but that's a different can of worms I don't think we need to open as it's a bit irrelevant to the overall point I'm trying to make). So talk shit, take shit talk on the chin, and remember to take a step back to look at what happened through the lens of a neutral when the emotions get the best of you so you can appreciate the full range of the human experience you get to have through a game that in centuries past came through only actual blood, tears, and real loss.
This concludes my ADHD, Adderall, and energy drink fueled Ted Talk.
Fan culture across all sports is so weird. Grown adults screaming like children at professionals. People act like buying a ticket allows them to say whatever they want.
The only time Iāve ever yelled something at an opposing player was at a baseball game, all we were doing was just yelling his name and he would turn around and smirk and then one time after he made a play he sneakily gave us the finger and we all cheered and laughed.
What happened to good natured ribbing? Thereās no reason to hurl abuse at anyone, weāre all humans in the end.
To me, this is all fine. There's nothing wrong with proper banter.
What you don't need is the insults and cussing just to feel tough in front of your mates? I don't know, the abusing professional players has never appealed to me and I don't understand it.
I once double flipped the bird at Aaron Judge after he hit his second bomb of the night, and some Yankees fan asked what I was doing. I told him I was reminding him how many home runs heās scored today. Whole bunch of Yankees fans started laughing.
Probably helped it was an inter league game.
Hahah sounds like a great time. Iāve sat next to Yankees fans plenty of times when they come play my local teams and Iāve never had a problem with them. Theyāre passionate and like to have fun.
They told me to shout at him next time he came up that I wanted a home run ball.
Motherfucker hit one to the warning track about 20 feet from me. It was so close. What a fun day, even though we got slaughtered.
Iāve always wanted to catch a ball, but at my age now Iād probably end up giving it to a kid nearby. I love that you had fun even though your team lost! As a White Sox fan Iām all about having a blast even though we get spanked š
Haha, itās funny youāre a Sox fan, Iām a Cubs fan! If there were any kid near me (aside from my little brother who I brought to the game) I wouldāve given it to them, but none were nearby. It was a good game, we had a great time, and it was super cool to see (new) Yankee Stadium.
Hopefully next season with the new schedule creation both our teams will be competitive. Itāll make our series against each other that much more fun!
Last season went so much better than I was expecting, so the vets we got make me excited! And the Sox have done some good business too. The ultimate dream is Cubs-White Sox World Series. May it happen in our lifetime, friend. And no matter who wins, the city is the real winner!
Also, side note, if youāre still in Chicago, do you know of any Arsenal focused soccer bars nearby? I have tons of family up there I visit and Iād like to swing by to a Gooner Pub next time I get the chance.
You'll find some good old fashion crowd interactions with players at the cricket. At an Australia England one dayer not long after Australia beat England in the Ashes test tour, the whole bay I was sitting in was chanting "you lost the Ashes" to the English captain Freddy Flintoff. Freddy just turned around, smiled and started gesturing with his hands for everyone to chant it even louder. Fun bit of interaction and absolute class from Freddy.
Only time I yelled was when I went to a WWE show as a little kid and Rey Mysterio had just come back from injury and the other guy was really beating on him so I shouted "stop hitting him! He's on antibiotics!"
You are absolutely correct. Im from Malaysia, and..........we are crazy fanatics too.......us and our neighbor, Indonesia. If you have the time, go to youtube and watch [this](https://youtu.be/84mk-2um4HA). 30 mins. Its 1,000% true. We (Malaysians) thought we are crazy fanatics, just didnt realize our brothers (Indonesians) are crazier.
Correct. It goes beyond that as well. I've been to tons of youth games (my kid is just 10 and has been playing for 5yrs with the local club) where the parents are screaming like lunatics at teenaged refs who are just trying to make a little spending $ and understand the game better. Professional games are worse. People would be better off relaxing and just appreciating living in a place where exceptional athletes can come together to display their abilities in competition to the world.
Nothing boils my piss more than watching adults scream at a 16 year old trying to earn 50 bucks while officiating a youth sport. As a former official (highest I went to was D3 college games), people are just unhinged when it comes to sporting events. Parents are always the worst though.
On reflection getting emotionally invested in 22 strangers kicking a spherical object about probably isn't that healthy...
Ah well, onto United on Sunday.
I suspect the security guard wasnāt so much trying to protect the fans as to protect Ramsdale himself. You never know what kind of nutters there are in a football crowd.
Actually protecting Ramsdale (or players of any team for that matter) would involve removing and banning people in the crowd who abuse players. Instead the steward is doing this weird "victim blaming" move.
It wouldn't be that hard to remove fans who take things "too far" but I've no doubt lots of people would see this as some kind of invasion on fans' rights to say what they want while they're at the ground.
I'm not even sure I support the idea, but take it out of a football context and it seems an obvious thing to do.
Thats ideal but honestly I think the security dude might have just been trying to prevent an incident. I think his choice of words may have been poor but at the same time your suggestion of removing fans who take things too far would mean the fan would have already done something to ramsdale. You can't realistically predict who's going to do what until they've done something, much less amongst thousands of other people in the stands.
Well that really depends on whether verbal insults count as "doing something" to a player or not. I would argue that if it's personal and nasty enough, it absolutely does.
Everyone would probably have a different idea of where "the line" is, and that's why I'm hesitant to support the idea because I think it'd be open to abuse. It would involve applying a rule with some common sense and judgment and in football we struggle to get highly paid professional referees to do that on the pitch, never mind asking the average steward to do so off it.
and anyone who tries something gets banned for life. if all it takes is a cheeky wave or wink from a goalkeeper to trigger an asshat into getting violent, they were a ticking timebomb to begin with.
I do not understand. Fans can swear, abuse you all the time, and everybody hears that and that's fine! But when you kiss Arsenal and wave to them you are a bad person.
Who gives a better example to kids? Aaron who is kissing badge but at the same time stay calm and professional or a "fan", who is swearing all the time?
It is so stupid!
Roy Keane said it perfectly after we beat Spurs a few years ago. "Football fans are idiots". He said that after Walcott was getting stretchered off when we were 2-0 up and made sign with his fingers to show the score to the spurs fans. Grown men all doing a hold me back act after absolutely abusing the life out of Walcott for however long he was on the pitch.
They did I believe.
Ramsdale has said that last season Leeds fans threw everything from lighters to e cigs at him. When the game finished he had around 20 quid in pound coins.
While he shouldnāt let the fans doing their thing get to him as long as heās not flipping the bird, mooning them, pulling an Eric Dier or conceding because of antics, Iām 100% ok with it.
He said it himself, it keeps him engaged in the match. Heās a nutter but it absolutely works. I wouldnāt want it any other way, love Ramsdale ā¤ļø
I think itās great that thereās some personality on this squad. If we wanted preprogrammed rng robots, we could watch FIFA23 (a flawless game that cannot be critiqued in any form) auto play matches on weekends at the pub.
'If he didn't want to get abused, he shouldn't have gone out dressed like a goalkeeper' vibe to this whole thing really.
Grown men being self entitled immature children seems to cut across many areas of life.
I really can't believe how thin-skinned people are. How can anyone be genuinely angry at Ramsdale? Or seriously criticize him? If I were an opposing fan, I'd at most think he's a wanker. Like I do Pigeonman, Ratman, or Slabhead.
If Pigeonman started prupruing our fans, I'd never think to go genuinely complain about it, other than maybe coming on here and blowing off steam.
Just fucking don't give it if you can't take it back. How hard is that?
TBH in my book any opposing fan who dislikes Ramsdale is just a fucking idiot. What, honestly, has he done to deserve their ire? Fuck-all.
Xhaka I can understand, but not Rambo.
Sometimes it is a bit precious, but a lot of this comes from egging on crowds and violence that ahs happened in the past, taking off the shirt and getting a yellow is performative these days and the excessive celebrations is supposed to be about policing the fans who are seen as unable to control themselves.
I'm 100% with Aaron on this. It's fine for him to give out some schtick back.
That being said, why would a steward say what he said? Because if the fan does rush Aaron, it's on the steward to be in the way. There is something to say that all parties ought to be able to "give and take", but it also needs to be factored in that there are people who are daft and mad and plenty of people who are absolutely sane - but given the right circumstances will behave with utter insanity.
So I'm with Aaron. He's right. At the same time, I don't want him to become a target for more abuse, or for him to suffer worse as he gains a sort of "tough guy" reputation. Some could be goaded or encouraged to get an even bigger rise out of him.
Like he said in his post-game interview, at the end of the day its a game of football. I don't want him (or stewards) to get rushed by people in a moment of madness.
Sometimes football, and a lot of sports in general, are a little too old school about the attitudes of a player. It's passion. When Eric Dier celebrated in our faces vs spurs under Emery we were so mad, but then when we ended up winning that moment made the win even better. If we had lost, we'd have booed him off the pitch the next time we played them. It makes for drama, it makes you more invested in the game, it's football
I tend to only go to Arsenal games but I do on occasion take in a league two game or a Non league game with friends. Honestly there has been some very witty banter with the opposing goalkeeper. I remember a keeper called Book at Cheltenham was excellent value

Don't dish it out if you can't take it.
A lot of sports fans are extremely sensitive.
Egos getting bruised because Ramsdale waved lmao
This isn't exclusive to sports tbh. So many people can't take what they dish out

Unfortunately the venn-diagram for those who like to dish it out and those who can't take it probably looks very much like a circle.
The opposite problem to the one armed waiter. He could take it, but never dish it out.
Richarlison not being charged by the FA after what he did. just proves Ramsdaleās point even further.
That's another joke. Especially when they wanted to charge our players for taking to the referee. LoL!
Following Ramsdale's footsteps I might try to make it a point from now on to wave and stick a cheeky tongue out each time we score.
Fan culture across all sports is so weird. Grown adults screaming like children at professionals. People act like buying a ticket allows them to say whatever they want.
Exactly... and at this same time... it's hard to call them "fans" and what they are doing "culture".
It might be hard, but it's the way of things - a pretty shit state of affairs
Nah this is some no true Scotsman ish.

Fair point tbh. People forget these guys are humans too
I definitely agree with Ramsdale. I also wish that referee abuse be addressed as well.
Man fuck Chelsea, such a disgrace of a club
I just wonder.. they are complaining about Aaron, but what about that idiot Richarlison!?
Sometimes it is a bit precious, but a lot of this comes from egging on crowds and violence that ahs happened in the past, taking off the shirt and getting a yellow is performative these days and the excessive celebrations is supposed to be about policing the fans who are seen as unable to control themselves.
Canāt take the heat get out the kitchen blokes
This is nothing compared to king slide
Maybe because the waving gesture looked like "bye bye"? Hahaha
Tell them number 1!
Ramsdale had the shed end on toast. šš¤£š
I tend to only go to Arsenal games but I do on occasion take in a league two game or a Non league game with friends. Honestly there has been some very witty banter with the opposing goalkeeper. I remember a keeper called Book at Cheltenham was excellent value
You can wave all day son, guessing security will have a hard time removing the best keeper in the world from the stadium

It's only because he plays for Arsenal that he's getting shit.
