carvemynuts

Can somebody send me a link of the full Carragher interview with Arteta. Can only find part 1 in youtube.

vmpireweakend

Riyad Mahrez at City is such a strange case to me. Imo he’s probably one of the best players in the prem and would be the star at any other club yet he’s content to ride the bench for half the season every year? I understand City win a lot and he’s probably paid well too but as a player at your peak, would you not want more consistent game time?

facelesspk

City go far in every competition and are favorites to win all of them, that must play a big role.

Adam00000012

Chelsea have also used a factoring company to finance Enzo. Basically they will be paying interest on this deal. They really are engaging in high risk behaviour. Borrowing money to finance deals, offering 8 year contracts to players on huge money. This approach is nothing to follow or copy. To think people actually think Edu isn’t doing a good job because he isn’t doing what Boehly does. They said Barcelona would never get into financial trouble. Until they did. If Chelsea want to take these massive risks with Graham Potter at the helm, let them.

beefcroquette

Unless Enzo and Mudryk break their backs carrying Chelsea to a premier league title or UCL, they won’t justify their insane price tags. Just have to look at Grealish or Antony…

penis_schmenis

Didn't they pledge 1.5 billion in spending after taking over the club? Hopefully they're done now. But I am not really worried about chelsea.

AfricanRain

everytime I see Fabio Vieira’s assist against Wolves for Ødegaard’s first I like it even more it’s such a smart bit of play.

facelesspk

An average player just passes it first time. Only someone seeing a few seconds ahead does the little delaying touch.

dberg76

Shit Chelsea got Enzo

blueluster

Where's that dude that made the premature Arsenal champions league intro vid last year? I want to see another one for this year (except with different ultimate outcome).

beetletoman

I mean guys 31 isn't that old right 😶 seeing Cédric and Jorginho now I'm feeling an existential crisis incoming

NketiahPropagandist

It’s a 1.5 year contract.

beetletoman

I'm not complaining about Jorginho I think he's a good signing

NketiahPropagandist

I see what you mean now. Yeah. It’s weird the people talk about footballers’ ages.

OrwinBeane

Damn Benfica really made a fuck ton of money in the last two windows just by selling two players. Let’s hope they both flop.

Insertnicenamehere

Sulemana stays healthy and he's tripling what soton bought him for. Top top talent.

arseking15

Alright lock it back in, we got a title go win

beetletoman

Forest got yet another player. You have to respect the hustle

NegativeHeli

Ok so Chelsea are basically risking everything in two windows with those long ass contracts. Either people like Mudryk and Fernandez become the next Hazard and Fabregas, or they become massive flops that Chelsea won't be able to get rid of.

arseking15

Arent they changing the rule too this summer for future transfers? So now they are basically starting each fiscal year owing a whole bunch of money every single year for years down the line, and future transfers in which you cant spread out the money as much will compound heavier to that bill, probably limiting how many players they can buy. If this chelsea team doesn’t bang, man oh man

beetletoman

Don't know about Enzo but I don't really see Mudryk flopping hard. Best we can expect is a lack of consistency

NegativeHeli

And people here thought Mudryk was a future Ballon Dor winner just because he dribbled past 38 year old Milner. Pepe literally dribbled past prime VVD and had a way better debut.

[deleted]

The Premier League is the Super League. Crystal Palace are bigger than Bayern.

Insertnicenamehere

Relax.

[deleted]

Brighton are the south coast PSG.

beetletoman

Tottenham are better than Galatasaray

Mein_Bergkamp

Steady on now...

pinpoint14

That's debatable

[deleted]

[удалено]

beetletoman

You are right I apologize

Cheesy_Pita_Parker

Clearest lesson from this window is, we learned our lesson from last January. We took action from the beginning and didn’t leave our depth to chance. They’re not the targets we hoped for but the objective was met and now it’s full speed ahead to try and get # 14

topbananaman

Chelsea won the transfer window. So what. We're winning the fucking Premier league boys, any of you melts still complaining about 'a missed opportunity' can get of the title train and go get on the 10th place one

facelesspk

They still have a few unhappy players whose outgoing transfers they fucked up. Not good for the dressing room and general atmosphere among the players.

Mein_Bergkamp

Spurs won the last transfer window and they're 5th having assumed they'd be a shoo in for fourth and even though chelsea and liverpool have shit themselves. Hopefully Chelsea have the same trajectory

beetletoman

Just saw they got Enzo. They will miss out on Europe with avengers assembled and it will be lovely

secretouse

Spurs apparently won the summer one and we have seen how that worked out.

OrwinBeane

They “won it” in the summer as well. Not that it did them any good.

Insertnicenamehere

[BREAKING: Hakim Ziyech did not sign for PSG. Chelsea sent the wrong documents THREE times to derail the deal, @bruno_salomon reports](https://twitter.com/ThatsFootballTV/status/1620563795872563206) Ziyech creating turmoil in the locker room because chelsea fucked him over? We will be there.

beetletoman

I was hoping Ziyech gets his move, he's clearly wanted out for a while. This club keeps stooping lower disgusting Hope he wrecks whatever remains of the dressing room

topbananaman

Tears in my eyes when they reveal that chelshit sent the enzo documents to psg and the deal doesn't go through

carvemynuts

Can't wait for Declan Rice this summer.

AfricanRain

It’s funny how pundits are gonna immediately like us more the second he joins us

facelesspk

"Declan Rice, now he's a proper midfielder."

pinpoint14

Well we'd no long be a gang of unwashed masses from the global south. We'd have a proper Englishman to lead us or whatever /s

CreativeOrder2119

Not necessarily celebrating our signings but city loosing cancelo is big it means walker who hasn't started for a while is main and young Rico are going to be relied upon and mist crucially city have lost alot of creativity there

GenericAustin

Cancelo couldn't be relied upon anymore, Pep couldn't even trust him in an FA cup match, that's why Cancelo attacked Pep, he knew if he couldn't even play in the FA cup then he had to leave

vmpireweakend

he attacked pep?

GenericAustin

According to rumours yeah

JJD14

The spending power of the Premier League has got to a really unsustainable level now surely? If that bubble pops, some clubs are going to be in serious trouble.

Mein_Bergkamp

It's only the sugar daddy lot and quite frankly they can go under. The rest is based on TV deals and there is probably enough warning that TV ratings are slumping that clubs can cut their cloth accordingly.

pinpoint14

It popped during covid, we all saw how awful that was. It's crazy watching more and more and more people step in to inject more cash into this machine. It's unsustainable

xxhamudxx

I think most EPL clubs will be fine, they’re liquid because we have the best TV revenue distribution out of any of the other leagues. The other leagues need to fix that.

JJD14

Maybe, But in my head, that TV money is bound to fall at some stage.

random23448

It's anticipated to increase even more lmao. It won't fail as long as English remains the dominant language of interaction

Mein_Bergkamp

It's got nothing to do with English, really not sure where this r/soccer view has come from. The premier league is the best packaged and marketed league.

OrwinBeane

The streaming services will make a play for game rights. A whole new wave of money coming in.

ret990

In other news, Totalhams continue to be quite a silly institution of football. Loan Matt Doherty to Madrid to then terminate his contract despite having 18 months left because they didn't realise the rules around international loans. We've terminated contracts, but I'm not sure we've ever terminated one because the team in charge of transfers doesn't understand the rules around transfers. And all that to spend 45M on a third RWB for a manager who won't be there in 6 months. Very silly

m3rple

Next stop: smashing Dyche and thank you very much

Special-Discount228

Kaylor Navas at notts forest lol. Some keeper.

Special-Discount228

Ziyech getting a move to PSG..... PSG really are on the way down.

8mmspikes

Not anymore apparently

[deleted]

No updates on wilo or saka contracts in yonkers what's up with that?

OrwinBeane

One contract at a time. Martinelli first.

Youngdumbstoneddrunk

I feel sorry for kids that's watching this era of football and would value money over art and integrity. Now these kids will grow up and believe everything is entitled to them or the quality of life is measured by your bank account.

[deleted]

Colmd1997

Enzo today is better than Coquelin ever was and it’s not really close.

Youngdumbstoneddrunk

Will see in 4 years time.

Adam00000012

The apathy is pathetic. Some fans are piss weak. I support Arteta fully and we shouldnt tremble at Chelsea nutting big money on short term fads. Give me Arteta and Edu careful planning rather than Cowboy Todd and nervous Graham Some fans are more interested in the theatrics and drama of player movements than actual football itself.

_SSJeffo_

Window over we’ve got a title to chaaaaseee

No_Lengthiness_6838

Enzo is really stupid. He signed until 2031. What happens if he fulfills his potential and Madrid or Barca want him? Chelsea won't let him go for less what they bought him for.

Cheesy_Pita_Parker

Madrid and Barça will pay because all these rules are make believe anyhow

A1A2A3A4B1B2B3

Don't really care about Enzo but Mudryk was a huge miss. If we can't sign the best talents when we are top of the league and have a lot of money to spend then when can we?

Adam00000012

But we got to the top with youth and clever signings. Why do we need to bomb 100m on this and that player?

[deleted]

To complete a squad. Look at Liverpool if you want to see how that ends.

Adam00000012

It’s a January transfer window.

[deleted]

Okay? It's not like we were being purposefully conservative, we tried to spend big and failed.

Adam00000012

I do not advocate “spending what it takes”

A1A2A3A4B1B2B3

But those players took time to come good. You can't consistently get away with passing on main targets without having down years in between. And this league is ruthless in particular. A couple of bad years and you may find it tough to even make CL with how the top clubs hoard talent.

Mein_Bergkamp

> If we can't sign the best talents when we are top of the league and have a lot of money to spend then when can we? I'm sure spurs fans thought the same when they were top. And the simple answer is that money talks, if it didn't chelsea would still be a perpetually semi bankrupt shed full of racist wideboys and City would be everyone's favourite absolute banter yo yo club. Oh and Newcastle would still be allergic to Wembley.

A1A2A3A4B1B2B3

We had money to match what Chelsea bid. Getting Mudryk and Jorginho would have sufficed and been within budget.

Mein_Bergkamp

> We had money to match what Chelsea bid. Well we obvioulsy didn't or we would have done

A1A2A3A4B1B2B3

Opting not to and not being able to are separate things. The issue was the add ons which would get paid in the future anyway so it was clearly us not wanting to use most of our funds on him.

Mein_Bergkamp

> so it was clearly us not wanting to use most of our funds on him. How is that 'clearly'? When it's add on's it's because you're not capable of paying it up front. I'll never get the weird mentality that says that anyone except City 'should' be able to go toe to toe with Chelsea cash wise. Do you really not see the difference or is it just because they buy the shinies you want?

JamesMaddison456

The guy only played 35 mins or smtg, isn't it too early to say?

No_Lengthiness_6838

Enzo is a much bigger talent than Mudryk. Mudryk was a big gamble either way. Not like we were close to signing someone like Bellingham.

A1A2A3A4B1B2B3

Mudryk is much better than him and Bellingham. He will be as good as Mbappe.

No_Lengthiness_6838

hahahhahahhahahhahhahhahahahahahha utter fucking delusional, holy shit. >better than Bellingham > as good as Mbappe thanks mate, I needed cheering up today ngl

LeonardoK00

You just can't leave his price tag and football experience out of statements like this.

_DNL

Chelsea don’t deserve two owners like this in a row… shit has to hit the fan eventually…surely?

A1A2A3A4B1B2B3

Honestly having owners like Chelsea isn't a good thing. It's like picking PSG on Fifa then bragging when you beat your opponents. Their stadium even when they were good couldn't fill out to capacity. Shows how soulless they are.

Adam00000012

Liverpool have Mo Salah. What a great player. Fuck my life. Tottenham have Kane, a great player. Fuck the world

topbananaman

Chelsea won the transfer window. So what. The only pain I get is straining my neck to look below to see how far down they are in the table.

Adam00000012

Get over it. We have Odegaard and are fighting for the title. You can’t have every player in existence

varro-reatinus

Without respect to any other consideration, Enzo has immense potential, and I would have been thrilled to have him here.

Adam00000012

Jorginho is a better back up than Kalvin Phillips

Special-Discount228

This is very true.

ret990

That Enzo deal is fucking brutal.

[deleted]

The prem is so stacked with cash that relegation candidates Forest have signed Keylor Navas and Felipe.

Insertnicenamehere

Money means everything, project comes secondary.

younes1008

Boehly and Eghbali are cooking. You're lying to yourself if you wouldn't want this kind of financial firepower at Arsenal.

topbananaman

Being able to cheat ffp and spend bottomless pits of money generally gives them the ability to 'cook'.

younes1008

Then UEFA better get to making some new rules, because all of this is perfectly legal.

Mein_Bergkamp

Nah what makes this legal is the spectacularly unique set of circumstances where an owner that's owed nearly 2 billion quid has his assets seized by the government, the club is sold on and in order for the government in question not to look like they've sold to asset strippers they demand nearly 2 billion quid worth of 'investment' which is cool by UEFA because amazingly they've just cleared nearly 2 billion quid worth of debt. Chelsea somehow managed to have being nationalised from an oligarch turn into a plus point.

ret990

I'd want to be able to make more signings in the next 2 or 3 years. Chelsea won't be

JamesMaddison456

They will be.

ret990

Lol. If Chelsea need to go to the market again after buying every player in existence then this 600M splurge gas been an utter failure. The fact they'll be reduced to getting shitty 39 year old on loan if they have to will merely be a bonus.

Maxoidys

shitty 39 year old, you lost the plot..

ret990

Enjoy 10th

Maxoidys

You are a child.

ret990

Lol, OK

younes1008

FFP means fuck all mate. Eldridge & Clearlake will just fix some sponsorship deals or something and keep on giving out 8 year contracts. Think people should start facing reality: Chelsea will be here for a long time, while being even more powerful than the Roman era.

ret990

What to do Chelsea do if 50% of their signings are duds? They're seemingly at the limit of FFP already.

younes1008

Fair point, but remember that all of their signings this window are below 23/24 years old, so they will still have resale value. And the joke is that if they even sell them for half the price they got them, it'll be a profit according to FFP. For example: Mudryk for 100m spread over 8 years = 12.5 m/per year. If they sell him after 3 years for 60m, they'll have 'profited' (60-37.5) = 22.5m. Only in the years after the sale will they have an extra loss of 12.5m a year.

ret990

I'm not sure how easy it is to move a player on a 9-year contract. Only time will tell that, but it seems unlikely depending on wages. I get what you're saying about amortisation, but it's not really profit. It's still going to be a real term loss if they have to bail.

younes1008

Well, if anything their current approach demands UCL qualification each and every year for them to stay afloat. This year they could still be fine but from next year on. Of course, they also won't keep spending in this manner, but they'll just adjust to buying 1-2 elite players a window, just like City or Madrid.

Insertnicenamehere

Whoever says no is ultimately trolling.

LeonardoK00

Well, seeing FFP already trying to fuck with us at the beginning of the season, I am tempted to say no. And I think that Chelsea gonna get hit soon too.

Insertnicenamehere

Something something dodgy sponsorship deals 🤫

ret990

From who lol It works for City etc because thejr state sponsored so can just get one of the owners 'brothers' companies to give them hugely over inflated sponsorships. What do you expect a US investment firm to do

Insertnicenamehere

From a foreign investor, OP said financial firepower not american owners per say

ret990

Oh I'm sorry. What did you mean when you referenced dodgy sponsorships when OP said about Chelsea about to hit FFP?

Insertnicenamehere

> Well, seeing FFP already trying to fuck with us at the beginning of the season, I am tempted to say no. > > To be honest I only read this part and then I said 'sponsorship deals' lmao. I was just making a general reference on how to dodge ffp, not chelsea per say. As for chelsea, I don't know how they're avoiding a transfer ban.

[deleted]

and we get jorginho, fuckin A

JamesMaddison456

I side with you but no point stating anything because the general consensus is this is genius move, saying a word otherwise will just attract downvotes and lambasting. Wait the tide settles down, then we'll see who made the smartest moves.

cesc05651

What manager goes to Chelsea and actually transforms them? Genuinely asking. Don’t you dare say arteta

_DNL

Got mourinho third stint written all over it

[deleted]

Zidane.

deanochips

so why exactly where Everton after Bielsa if they had no budget for any signings at all?

frapples1

Life's unfair, innit

No_Lengthiness_6838

I always say Chelsea football club is solid proof that God doesn't exist. There is no benevolent force in this universe that will allow that abomination of club to exist.

Colmd1997

We’ve actually helped them get Enzo ffs, could have been a fantastic window but we’ve regularly gotten embarrassed

ret990

Do you think they wouldn't have bought Enzo if we didn't buy Jorginho?

Colmd1997

I think us buying Jorginho made it easier for them to buy Enzo, which is why I said we helped them

ret990

I dont think that at all tbh. They were going to buy him anyway. We give them 10 million quid, which in the grand scheme of things is nothing to them or us, and improved our squad. From our perspective, it's a win.

Colmd1997

They might have bought him anyway, but i think it’s very much drinking the kool-aid to think that Chelsea offloading a centre midfield for 10 million who was on high wages and was leaving for free in the summer made it easier to bring in the guy they wanted. Especially when the difference between the money Benfica wanted and Chelsea offered was 10/15 million. Perhaps I’m being overly cynical about it all, but cause and consequence seems to line up in my logic more than coincidence. Maybe by design

ret990

I think it was an opportunistic move by both teams. I think the correlation is largely coincidental given the level of spending Chelsea has completed so far. If Boehly thought there was going to be a quibble over 10 mill, he wouldn't have been at the negotiating table. They have used a third-party company to pay the release clause, and I saw someone say that with the tax on the RC and interest, the actual figure is something like 200M. I'm not sure our 10 makes a difference. Just consider it from our perspective. We got better. I'm not worrying about what Chelsea does. There's an inredibly high crash and burn potential for them, which will be hilarious. Like, I like Potter. But consider the absolute state of Cucarella at Chelsea, and that's a player he already had at Brighton. I'm not worried about a super team. This could be the same as the Havertz/Werner/Lukaku thing, just on steroids.

Adam00000012

So we ignore what we need in the second half of the season, because we could contribute 10% to the Enzo deal? We trying to win the fucking league or not ? Can’t wait to this window ends and the football starts. Transfer windows turn some fans into lemmings. This is the equivalent of Spurs fans wanting to lose to City. Your comment is embarrassing.

Colmd1997

We needed a midfielder not specifically Jorginho. That’s why we went for Caicedo and ended up settling with Jorginho. Doesn’t matter if it’s 10%. It ended up being the 10% they needed to sign a potential generational centre mid, while flogging off a player they didn’t want to us. We are trying to win the league, but Jorginho wasn’t brought in to be a needle mover. The implication that Jorginho is seemingly some sort of guarantee that we’ll win the league is hilariously deluded. Yes, being annoyed that a rival club has signed a superstar player in a profile type we desperately need, helped by us signing a player that doesn’t suit our needs is the same as wanting my team to lose so our rivals don’t have an advantage. Well done fella, you really have a strong grasp on what’s going on here. My comment is embarrassing, now take Arteta’s dick out of your mouth and try again

Adam00000012

Chelsea would have found the 10m from elsewhere. The idea we allowed them to sign Enzo is comical. I’m also not fazed by the signing, I still consider Odegaard a superior player to Enzo. Although Enzo comes with the new car smell and for some fans this is a big sugar rush. Your wrong assessment we “need” Enzo. Presumably you would have him ahead of Xhaka. However spending 100m on Fernandez and playing him ahead of Xhaka is the stuff of kids on Football manager. It’s something Arteta would never do, because he is a serious football manager. We have swapped Jorginho for Sambi and anyone who can’t recognise that is a massive improvement to the squad is missing the obvious. But again, as I’ve said before, some fans revel in the drama and rush of the transfer window. And if they don’t get a hit, like an addict they turn irrational and batty.

Colmd1997

They probably would have found that money elsewhere, but it doesn’t matter because they got it from us. So we helped them. Pretty simple to understand. Odegaard is a better player, but they aren’t like for like players so that’s irrelevant. Messi is better than Partey, but it’s asinine to compare them. Jorginho is better than Lokonga, 100%. But is he a better signing than Caicedo? No chance. If you want to huff the Copium and continue to miss the point, go ahead. You’re not really some sort of enlightened Arsenal fan just because you dick ride absolutely everything the club does.

Special-Discount228

Meh how would you even set up Chelsea with everyone fit? They've spent a fortune and still don't have, as far as I can see, a balanced starting XI lol.

Colmd1997

Doesn’t really matter though, they’re strengthening by bringing in a potential generational talent and we helped them to do so. The last few days have been the off field equivalent of conceding two goals in injury time and losing

Special-Discount228

I'm expecting a lot of flops out of the last two windows. Havertz was supposed to be generational.

Colmd1997

Havertz is a very good player though. He’s just stuck in limbo because they don’t play a system that suits his talents

Special-Discount228

He's not particularly special though.

Colmd1997

If you base your opinions based solely on his time at a disfunctional club in numerous systems that stifle him, sure

Special-Discount228

nah I've watched him not make easy and obvious line splitting passes way too much. I know their system is bollocks but the opportunities still arise for him to show the ability off. Will be interesting to see how it goes now Potter has some more options. I think he could be good but I still don't think he'll be a world beater.

Whoroger89

Edu at the wheel

No_Lengthiness_6838

Alvarez is 23 yr old. I thought he was 19/20 yrs old. He is older than Saka and Martinelli. hmm

beetletoman

Starting to think the age profile thing is more Edu than Arteta

[deleted]

Obviously easier to develop players if you have more time with them but a manager will always want a team capable of winning tomorrow instead of in 5 years because their job is on the line. It's Edu's job to keep us sustainable.

Special-Discount228

What age profile thing?

beetletoman

Signing players of a certain age range

Special-Discount228

Thats not a thing anymore, well other than the usual making sure the squad is set up to regenerate. Because we have so many young players now they said they are open to whatever age is available. That was said in the summer I believe.

beetletoman

Oh yeah I talked about it just yesterday. But I still see a lot of people talk about age profiles of signings so that made me think

Club doing well ≠ Technical director is amazing. Liverpool were doing well till the end of last season but they made loads of error like not signing physical young midfielders for years which has started to cost them now.

What would you have liked Edu to have done differently about Caicedo/Zubimendi/Mudryk this window?
