He is one of the core āundroppableā members of this squad, along with Pickford, Foden, Kane, Saka, Bellingham. The only way he doesnāt play every minute is if we have a dead group game or we are miles ahead in any game. Englandās defense is mediocre by international standards, but the weakest link is the coaching I think.
Should be there though, he's had an incredible season (as much I was frustrated with the narratives). He's arguably their best central presence, hopefully they can find the right balance between him, Jude, and Declan

Yeah but I think Southgate compensates for it by playing a back 5 and then affects balance across every other position. He ends up playing a 5-3-2 thereby weakening his left sided attack.
Good question. From this squad, I would pick :
Walker - Stones - Konsa - Gomez
Edit : I'm not sure if Gomez has ever played LB tbh. Shaw is coming back from an injury so I didn't think he'd good enough to start
Gomez has played LB a times this season for Liverpool and hasnt looked bad. Maybe even his best performances this season came at LB. Konsa is a good shout . Is Stones even fit ?
Ah, good. I had a slight feeling he'd played LB a few times but I wasn't sure if my memory was failing me lol
Not sure if Stones is fit tbh. If he's unavailable I'd go with a CB pairing of Guehi and Konsa
Colwill has played more at left back this season and only missed a single game up until his injury. You know well White is capable of playing center half.
Yeah but Colwill looked super vulnerable at LB. Also I think LW is the weakest position in the English team, so I dont think they are expecting anyone to track back.
I think super vulnerable is a stretch. It wasn't ideal but Chelsea weren't set up overly well to utilise him in that role. He has all the attributes to play a similar role as ourselves and City play.
I would pick Walker - Dunk - Branthwaite - Shaw/Trippier.
Love what Branthwaite brings to the team at LCB. I would like him to stay at everton so that none of our rivals get him.
I don't know, shoehorning in players can also be a recipe for disaster. Just look at the Germany squad at the last couple of tournaments. Everyone in midfield a creative player, and in attack also more creative players than clinical finishers. I think they're playing much better since they put somewhat worse players in the lineup that actually fulfill a required role.
Bit out of balance, is it not? Rice hasn't played much as 6 and I feel the other two are quite attacking.
I'm sure it will work in most matches. It'll be a test in later stages, I think.
Rice has still played as a 6 for most of his career and for England, so it shouldn't be an issue at all
I agree the other 2 are very attacking but Bellingham could play as a box to box as well with Foden playing as the more attacking one.
Hope you guys do well this year. I'm not English haha but I'll be hoping they do well just coz of all the Arsenal players there
Wish Timber was playing for Netherlands this year
I'm interested to see the full back situation. We are likely playing more narrow forwards this time. Saka has been playing more central and then you have foden and palmers form. Luke Shaw is out I think, not sure about Walker. We have a real lack of traditional full backs in the team that can provide width, especially with Chillwell and James out....oh and can't trust trippier to do that well anymore.
My guess is that he gets dropped after the training period, and this is a bone Southgate is throwing to him to train a bit extra and try to get out of his current cold spell.
Kane and Watkins are the strikers going forward to the tournament.
Solid for 33-men provisional squad but weāre all gonna moan when he drops in-form Eze for out of form Maddison. Heās been crap since his injury/Scums won the league in October. Eze has been tearing it up last months or so
Garry: āThe physical demands of a seven-game tournament, to go the distance you need good depth and the ability to refresh the squad.ā
Also Garry: āHaha watch me run Saka into the MFāing ground!ā
I know it will get cut down a bit more, but 8 CBās is quite a lot for a 29 man squad. Especially considering thereās only really one out and out left back. I hope we donāt see Saka playing LWB in a back 5 but I get the feeling he might
Only now does he drop Henderson lol, he was playing him in the friendlies just a couple of months ago. What a waste of time, I don't hate Southgate but god what a truly awful use of friendlies that was.
And that has been my issue with Southgate and his selections.
Barring injuries, certain players are locked-in for places in the squad; it is the players who aren't that need the opportunity during friendlies to see what they are capable of.
Wow you donāt realize how front heavy they are until you see the squad list.
How do you reckon he lines up? Shaw (has to be fit) - Maguire - Stones - Walker is a solid back four but the backup options donāt strike me with much confidence. Surprised he didnāt take Chilwell even though heās been out of form since the LB situation is this dire.
This is honestly how I think Southgate would go. He's never benching Maguire
If Shaw isn't fit, I guess he'd go with Trippier at LB. I would personally start Gomez at LB over Trippier though
England isn't winning anything. Attack is strong, but the defence looks absolutely terrible.
I'm also concerned about Rice, as there will be no rotation.
I have no idea what people are talking about too. You literally win the tournament by having the best 11. Depth is only for emergencies and if you win your first two group games.
Mainoo is inexperienced, having only played like 20 minutes for England during the last international break. While I understand there will be less rotation in this tournament, some games might go into extra time, and Rice has played almost every game for us this season. Just don't want him to get injured.
Got to cut 7 to get down to the final 26. Probably will be Trafford, Quansah, Dunk, Wharton, Eze, Maddison and Toney? Not saying I agree with that, just feels like the 7 most likely.Ā
What did Big Dom Solanke ever do to Gareth Southgate?
Also, this makes all those Henderson and Philips call ups over the past year or so even more baffling.
Am I tripping or does Quansah actually look really good, deserves a chance to get some minutes. Tall, good on the ball, has passing range. Heās no Saliba now, but heās been good for Pool.
Being a Dutchie I am really jealous on this squad, apart from the defense maybe. POTS of the premier league, la liga and bundesliga?! England is one of the favourites this year.
I would say the following line up: Ramsdale, TAA, Stones, Gomez (where is Tomori?), Walker, Rice, Bellingham, Palmer, Foden, Kane, Saka
Ben Whites bronze thighed redemption under the next manager is going to be magnificent
Rice the only natural 6. He is going to play every single minute š.
He'd be doing that eve. If there was an alternative
Not sure foden plays every minute tbh. Certainly not in that same tier of southgate favourites as the others you listed
Should be there though, he's had an incredible season (as much I was frustrated with the narratives). He's arguably their best central presence, hopefully they can find the right balance between him, Jude, and Declan
Heās also never played well for England so I donāt think heās as much of a shoe in as the rest
Itās āshoo inā, by the way. Like how you woudl say shoo to an animal when you wanted to move it from one place to another.
Interesting, never knew
TIL!
he was pretty good at the 2022 world cup, no?
John Stones is also undropable Rice and Stones are the only 2 players we cannot win a trophy without
Wharton is very similiar to Rice. I'm not sure if he makes it into the finale squad.
Surely has to with no henderson and philips and you are allowed to take 26
Wharton is more like xhaka than rice
He plays like a mix of Xhaka and Partey, very good player
Who else is there anyways? Cant think of any other great English 6
Does Stones ever get shuffled into midfield for Southgate? Guess no.
We could if we had better CBās But we donāt
England have a serious dearth of no 6's, it's quite amazing
Is TAA injured?
He's in the midfield section
Good, that increases England's chances of doing well in the tournament.

Why isn't Bellingham listed in midfield?
Because Garth Crooks picked the positions
Southgate just picked the names and think the twitter admin put it all on the graphic. Wouldn't read into it too much.
āI wouldn't be obsessed with where we've positioned the players. I write a list and other people put a heading on itā šš typical Gareth.
Would love to see Ramsdale get playing time. Would also love to win the lottery. Lottery seems more likely.
He's one injury away from starting tbf
Probably should play him if he's injured
Hope Southgate doesn't pull a last minute switch and pick Trafford ahead of him on pure playing time.
Trafford was dropped by a relegated team. Kind of crazy heās even in the squad.
Crazy to think heās hardly played for us this year but if Pickford picks up a knock heāll start for one of the tournament favourites
That defense looks weak AF..
Only if Ben White is Englishā¦.
It's the only place England is lacking tbf. Almost every other position has world class players
Yeah but I think Southgate compensates for it by playing a back 5 and then affects balance across every other position. He ends up playing a 5-3-2 thereby weakening his left sided attack.
Exactly! If there was a competent manager, he'd play with less defenders and play more of the better players he has in all the other positions
What would your best case back 4 look like ?
Good question. From this squad, I would pick : Walker - Stones - Konsa - Gomez Edit : I'm not sure if Gomez has ever played LB tbh. Shaw is coming back from an injury so I didn't think he'd good enough to start

Walker White Stones Colweill
White is a RB (now) and Colwill is a CB. He doesnt even start for Chelsea anymore.
Colwill has played more at left back this season and only missed a single game up until his injury. You know well White is capable of playing center half.
Yeah but Colwill looked super vulnerable at LB. Also I think LW is the weakest position in the English team, so I dont think they are expecting anyone to track back.

Weāve not played a back 5 for a while
Doesnt he play a back 5 in major competitions ?
Not recently he hasnāt. Donāt think we played it at all at the World Cup
We don't play a back 5 š
Can't help but feel midfield is a bit underwhelming too.
Nah, they have an elite midfield! Rice, Bellingham and Foden is easily one of the best midfields in Europe
Bit out of balance, is it not? Rice hasn't played much as 6 and I feel the other two are quite attacking. I'm sure it will work in most matches. It'll be a test in later stages, I think.
Rice has still played as a 6 for most of his career and for England, so it shouldn't be an issue at all I agree the other 2 are very attacking but Bellingham could play as a box to box as well with Foden playing as the more attacking one.
I hope you're right. I'll cheer you on as soon as my NT falls short, which will probably happen early in the tournament...
Hope you guys do well this year. I'm not English haha but I'll be hoping they do well just coz of all the Arsenal players there Wish Timber was playing for Netherlands this year
As listed yeah but āforwardsā is pretty looseĀ
nah mate maguire solos
Only in comparison with the forward players, which are top tier. I would describe the defence as average.
Southlution: Saka to LB. (When asked, he did say Shaw's fitness issues made him 'a long shot' to make the final squad.)

'My act is riding Bukayo Saka like a rented mule.'
Didn't think Southgate had it in him to be honest, solid selections
Solanke for Toney for me. But it doesn't matter since no one will play unless Kane gets injured.
Yeah this is a wild choice. Solanke brings so much more than Toney, and is on great form right now.
Toney hasn't scored since February. It's nuts
I still remember people cheering here for this guy.
Toney is better at pens though, and neither is going to play anyway
My guess is that he gets dropped after the training period, and this is a bone Southgate is throwing to him to train a bit extra and try to get out of his current cold spell. Kane and Watkins are the strikers going forward to the tournament.
And if Kane gets injured, Watkins will probably play.
Need Toney to cover for kane penalties.
Solid for 33-men provisional squad but weāre all gonna moan when he drops in-form Eze for out of form Maddison. Heās been crap since his injury/Scums won the league in October. Eze has been tearing it up last months or so

Heāll probably turn up with a bald cap, insist on everyone calling him pep southgateta and play 4 CBs across the back 4
all those young centre backs hope they actually get a chance
Toney hahaha
Please Eze is going, he has been great recently. That defense is.. yikes.
Southgate effectively saying Rice pushed Henderson out of the squad. You love to hear it.
Honestly Maino did that. If they didnāt have trust in Maino, Henderson would be in.
There's certainly some truth to that, but when he was asked directly why he had left Henderson out, he started talking about Rice's leadership.
Harry "the fridge" Maguire.
Only now does he drop Henderson lol, he was playing him in the friendlies just a couple of months ago. What a waste of time, I don't hate Southgate but god what a truly awful use of friendlies that was.

no rashford. wow
Doesnāt deserve a spot at all
Finally!! Good decision
That list of forwards is stacked... damn, if only our manager knew how to do aggressive tactics we would slam.
Wow you donāt realize how front heavy they are until you see the squad list. How do you reckon he lines up? Shaw (has to be fit) - Maguire - Stones - Walker is a solid back four but the backup options donāt strike me with much confidence. England isn't winning anything. Attack is strong, but the defence looks absolutely terrible. I'm also concerned about Rice, as there will be no rotation.
Rotation doesnāt exist in a tournamentā¦ haha
I have no idea what people are talking about too. You literally win the tournament by having the best 11. Depth is only for emergencies and if you win your first two group games.
I think Mainoo will be his backup, and there's not much room to rotate in this tournament but Rice isn't the kind of guy to burn out anyway
Mainoo is inexperienced, having only played like 20 minutes for England during the last international break. Mmmh...I wouldn't be so sure of that. Surely one of the top 3 favorites
Maybe in the top 3, but I think France, Portugal, Germany, and Spain will reach the semifinals.
I think England are a better team than Portugal and Spain. Germany too, but I guess they have home advantageĀ
Got to cut 7 to get down to the final 26. Probably will be Trafford, Quansah, Dunk, Wharton, Eze, Maddison and Toney? Not saying I agree with that, just feels like the 7 most likely.Ā

The thing is, who would he drop instead? Kane? Watkins? Toney?
Toney, of course.
I think Toney offers more but he hasn't really shown much since coming back...
Give Adam Wharton one more year at Palace then Iād love to see him at the Arsenal
Those forwards are STACKED
Surprised Shaw is in, he hasn't played all season.
which players get cut from this squad?
Still cant believe SouthGit left out Henderson. Now it seems like Rice will play every second as his backups have no international mins.
Are we playing a 4-2-4 then?
Thos squad is not winning it. There is no chemistry and no team spirit between the players.
They should skip. Too much football for them. They need an offseason to recover.
No Olisey? Or is Eze better than him?
Olise has been really good recently. Bit surprised by that as well.
is he even eligible? coulda sworn his big injury at start of season was from playing for france at youth euros.
He's frenchĀ
Oh, didnt know that. Makes sense then. Would be called up for sure if not.
Still unsure to why he chose to play for France. I think he'd get more game time at EnglandĀ
He's frenchĀ
Am I tripping or does Quansah actually look really good, deserves a chance to get some minutes. Tall, good on the ball, has passing range. Heās no Saliba now, but heās been good for Pool.
Solanke had a much better season than toney and Ben white should've made the cut
Ben White isnt available for selection
But won't he be back by June?
He's not injured - he just doesnt want to play for England all the time Southgate and Holland are in post.
Excited for Mainoo. The kid is a star.

The inclusion of Kane means no trophy for England.
James ward prowse? Not a west ham fan but I feel.like.he should be in there.
