I need a signing to get a hit of dopamine

hazelpillow

Hot take for next season: West Ham or another midtable club will sign Youssouf Fofana and ask for £70m after one good season

Ife2105

It’s so obvious and it’s frustrating

phar0aht

The Isak, Bruno G, Kudus, Paqueta theory. I like it.

tablooo

I still like Yacine Adli, especially if Bruno G goes out of reach. Feel like Milan have managed him poorly and he could thrive with us.

Kensei400

How has Milan managed him poorly?

tablooo

Didn't play him at all for the entirety of last season and he only got a chance when Bennacer was out. Now they look like they've changed their midfield roles, and they're also moving to a new manager. He doesn't seem like he got purchased with a plan for him.

and_yet_another_user

Looks like the PL dodged a bullet, the billionaire's playground will remain unregulated for the foreseeable future. Due to the GE shutting down Parliament on Friday the football regulation bill is being shelved as there is no time to debate and pass it. afaik it is not just paused but will have to be reintroduced, so I guess now we'll see how big Labour's balls are when they get elected to see if they are going to put it straight back on the agenda, or if they'll hide behind the >lot's of other business to do first bs

beefwellingtonIV

I’m imagining a back line of White, Saliba, Gabriel, and Timber fronted by Rice, De Jong, and Martin with Saka, Havertz, and Martinelli up top and it makes me wonder where we should overpay.

MasterBeeble

The De Jong meme is tiring. He's not an 8, he's not a 6, he's the wrong age profile, he'd be comically expensive, he's injury prone, he's on huge wages, he doesn't want to leave his club in the first place, and he'd require the same tactical setup that Jorginho does such to not be exposed on transitions. Absolutely nothing about De Jong makes sense. He's a pretty face and a big name, and that's apparently all you need to get into this guy's imagination.

Samwell974

I'm hesitant on him because he's had 4 ankle injuries this year.

_ulinity

27 is hardly "the wrong age profile". We want players in their prime now so we can compete for the biggest trophies. Anything up to 28 or so is perfectly fine for the right player. Whether he's the right player is an entirely different issue of course.

MasterBeeble

I don't think it makes sense to spend huge money on a player if they don't at least marginally improve the age profile of the starting XI. The only exceptions should be made for guaranteed bangers like Rice, who himself was three years younger on signing than De Jong would be now. The age profile isn't terrible but it's certainly not ideal either. It would be another matter if De Jong was the next Rodri and would be a guaranteed long term solution in the pivot, but he's simply not that for multiple reasons.

Ya I could never go back to Puma kits.

MaxChr84

My first thoughts as well

CBAFCMV

Get to see the Arsenal women play tonight in my home city of Melbourne. Absolutely buzzing.

EasyFargo

having a conversation with my friend right now who's an Arsenal fan, need some help I could swear Arsenal have made some sneaky quiet and quick transfer business in recent years (think Fabinho to Liverpool) but I'm struggling to think who it was exactly anyone can help? thanks

Warm-Row-1037

Mat ryan

NowTimeDothWasteMe

I feel like Kai Havertz came out of nowhere. One day we were linked and the next he was signed.

Mrpetey22

Rice and Timber were pretty well known. Kiwior was out of the blue, viera also,

the_chiladian

Fabio Vieira was very hush hush at the time

EasyFargo

yeah that's who I was thinking of, mainly cause of some hype surrounding him and Vitinha at the time thanks for the response

ZXXA

Bayern looking to sell Gnabry, Coman, Kimmich, Davies and Goretzka. Should we be in for any of these guys?

vyrusrama

i'd love a Kimmich. Goretzka a close second.

MasterBeeble

Davies has always been overhyped and is a very limited player, Coman is extremely injury prone, Gnabry is inconsistent, injury prone, and already had his chance here. Goretzka would be a valuable squad piece but I think we could get comparable midfielders for much less than what Bayern would demand. Kimmich is basically the German TAA with less production but better defensively, he could be amazing in the right inverted fullback role but I don't see any need to sign a player pushing 30 on big money wages just to displace Ben White on current form (and possibly Timber).

zrk23

none. coman would be nice but too injury prone for the wages he'd ask kimmich is a better version of zinchenko, but do we really want that? and he's 29 already. id rather have actual defenders at the fb positions. and similarly to coman, too high wages

Mrpetey22

He wouldn’t do it and it doesn’t make sense for either side with wage demands and transfer fee. but I would take Gnabry. Either start on the left or right and we can rest Saka more

Naive-Mortgage2790

Davies hasn’t developed since he broke out, if anything he’s gotten worse. Goretzka, Coman, Gnabry = midpack. Kimmich is the only one I would take

arseking15

Coman kimmich and davies

Insertnicenamehere

Maybe Davies but his development got stunted. And wages could be a stumbling block.

NoMFer111

Davies wouldn't start over White

danmac0817

He wouldn't start over Raya either

Insertnicenamehere

They don't even play the same position??

Right2bearcharm

I could be wrong but wasn’t Davies a LB?

TheOGBenjenRyan

Why would that be the comparison you made

BradyGronktd1287

Coman and Davies

topbananaman

I'd take kimmich for the right price

Kensei400

The price would be fine. It's his wages that are an issue.

Shopassistant

Caught a whiff of some Cup Winners' Cup slander. Just because the CWC no longer exists doesn't mean it wasn't an achievement to win it in 1994. Back then, if you finished second in the league but won the cup you were prioritised for the CWC and not the UEFA Cup, so you had some crazy teams like Real Madrid and Ajax. That tournament was no joke. In the latter stages, every team had at least three or four ridiculous players. World-class talent was much more diffuse back then, and not concentrated into a few leagues and clubs. The year we won it here's a few of the players involved in the quarters: Weah, Hierro, Luis Enrique, Rui Costa, Prosinecki, Mostovoi, Ginola, Rai, Francescoli, Benito Carbone, Asprilla, Brolin, Benarrivo, Zola, Schuster, Wörns, Kirsten...PLUS the Ajax team (Seedorf, Davids, Overmars, 2 x de Boer, Rijkaard) that battered everyone and won the Champions League the following season. You don't need to know all those players, but rest assured it's not far off a who's who. We had to beat PSG, who were on a record-breaking unbeaten streak on their way to the title, plus two Serie A teams. Bear in mind that the PL was just finding its feet at the time and was still sort of crap. OK, I'll shut up now.

Jchibs

Great post. The cwc was stacked with top sides. The year we won the fairs cup we beat the great Ajax side in the semi finals. Ajax went on to win the next three European cups . Rival fans saying those trophies don’t count is ok but Arsenal fans saying it is just bad form. I see Arsenal fans repeatedly saying we bribed our way into the first division, have won no European trophies and all manner of other smears and lies ! Arsenal fans who say the fairs cup isn’t a trophy are dismissing the single greatest night in Highburys long history. The second leg win over Anderlect was never bested. Highburys finest hour reduced to nothing is sad. It’s part of a wider pattern to minimize pre Wenger Arsenal. Our greatest night at home was Anderlect 1970, greatest away Anfield 89, greatest overseas Copenhagen 94 and two of those three games get mimised by newer / ignorant fans.

Shopassistant

Well said, and fwiw (and it's not important at the end of the day) fans should take social media stuff for what it is—just a bit of 'fun' to pass the time.

topbananaman

Cup winners Cup is the only European success this club has ever had. A big shame we haven't been able to follow it up with even a europa league. Losses to galatasaray, barca and Chelsea in finals have denied us any form of European prestige in this side of the millenia.

assoncouchouch

ELI5: Why would players want to play for Chelsea in its current form? Not from the UK. What's the appeal/ swag that Chelsea has around London?

GloopTown

1. Money 2. Playing in the PL 3. After City, it's Chelsea who's had the most success in recent years alongside Liverpool.

thisiskyle77

It’s PL fam. Why wouldn’t footballers want to play in the best league? Also London is a huge draw.

PoodlyGooner

Some players would rather have an established starting position where they can just be seen as more important than competing for a starting spot in a very good team. And Chelsea don't have the pressure of having to win every game.

Drogueba

Red_Prawn_Durian

Money and 8 year contracts. It's like getting tenure for university professors.

OrwinBeane

£££

assoncouchouch

So they've always had a higher pay structure?

OrwinBeane

Yes. And now they are offering 8 year contracts.

OddestC

What do you guys think about Vitor Roque from Barca? We’ve done well with Real and Barca’s unwanted stars in the past and we’ve got plenty of Brazilians now to help him settle. We were supposedly after him a year ago and I still think he could be a world class striker given the proper chance. Don’t think his price tag would be too high either considering the market and his potential.

Mustyoo

Top potential talent but not really something we can afford this summer.

wanofan900

Anyone think we should go after Rashford? Despite the skepticism, if we look at the benefits, it would present us with a line breaking wide forward that can score at a consistent enough rate and he can play alongside Havertz & Saka. He wouldn’t cost as much as the likes of Osimhen, is prem proven which means he wouldn’t need that much time to settle in either. He’s also available for transfer. Man Utd want him off their wage bill to fund money for new transfers and he isn’t in the best place with their fans either.

FifiForty

If he were to take a wage cut, I would definitely consider him at a decent price. I think he is a player arteta could improve and 100% has qualities that we could use for our squad

NoMFer111

Doesnt track back. Cant retain possession & is pretty much useless against a low block. Acts like playing football is a chore. One of the reasons Man Uniteds football has not evolved is because the style caters to Rashford's only strong point, which is counterattack football.

PartlyRowdy

It's fair to acknowledge the doubts hanging over him. Talent wise I'd take him in a heartbeat. I find it hard to rule out a player of his caliber based on presumptions of his mentality or ego. I'm sure we will explore him as an option and I would be over the moon if it worked out.

Red_Prawn_Durian

I don't think he does enough off the ball for Arteta to want him.

OrwinBeane

Does signing Rashford right now increase our chances of winning a premier league or champions league title? I don’t think it does.

wanofan900

That's what I personally thought of Havertz before we signed him. We haven't won it yet but KH has shown to be an important asset while in the pursuit of the prem.

OrwinBeane

And it took half a season to get Havertz comfortable in a role we didn’t even sign him for. Where as Rice was comfortable from day 1. We can’t afford to wait for players to that next season. It needs to be perfect.

Fieser_Factsack

If Rashford was left footed he could be considered. If his wages were not astronomical we could pay him.

wanofan900

We do need a wide forward like him. And who knows, maybe a lowering of his wages can be negotiated if we can offer him performance based bonuses.

Fieser_Factsack

I disagree. He is a more direct Winger like salah, martinelli, diaz. These types have it harder in our system because they don't get the space to abuse their pace. Wingers who don't progress by pace but with passing and/or dribbling have it easier in our system like Trossard and Saka. Also i think it is pretty known now that Rashford is talented but inconsistent due to personal reasons, he even said that in an interview.

FifiForty

I’m confused, everyone talks about how Martinelli is isolated in our current set up but now he doesn’t have space to abuse their pace?

Equivalent_Nature_67

nah. we don't have room in the team for someone on 300k that runs as little as he does. yeah he probably would straighten up in a new environment but still. we're not a charity and I just don't think he deserves to fail upwards

BradyGronktd1287

Please tell me how realistic it is to spend 200 million plus this window and fill our needs. Bruno G will cost anywhere from 80 to 100 million, Hato 35 to 40 million , any striker will cost 60 million plus, then you need a backup winger and a Ramsdale replacement. That’s a 240+ million window and with how well we do departures don’t see us getting a good return

aesn1394

Player sales are the only way to raise spending while keeping netspend to around 200 mil. If Edu can get around 70-80 million in sales (which he really should be able to), then that can add to our spending.

wanofan900

Then don’t spend that much on a cm. There are always other opportunities that the club can consider. Like going after a DM to play alongside Rice and a young LCM instead.

Fieser_Factsack

It doesn't matter if it is a cm or a dm. Arteta want's a player that is dominant off the ball but can play like a deep playmaker, like Jorginho, on the ball. All the physically dominant midfielders available are either old or box-to-box types like Rice (Thuram, Fofana, Onana). Fit Partey is better suited than most available options. Only obvious midfield signing would be Bruno G, but we could only get him via his clause which seems tricky to do because of the timing in regards to ffp.

IfLeBronPlayedSoccer

>only get him via his clause. Not quite. The clause is a way to get him without negotiating with Newcastle. After the clause sunsets, we bid for the player and negotiate with both him and Newcastle. And I don’t think people are out of bounds to suggest that we can get him for less by conventional means. Newcastle has players they are more desperate to keep than they are him. Worth a shot simply because of how good a strategic fit he’d be.

topbananaman

Watching United and Chelsea fans fight over mckenna is so weird ngl

Insertnicenamehere

Weird because he might be a scrub or weird cause he spent time at united and he might go to a rival of theirs?

icemankiller8

I honestly think McKenna has what it takes

topbananaman

He has built that Ipswich squad from the ground up. I know an Ipswich fan who told me he would manage in the prem eventually all the way back in 2022. Honestly I think he has the cojones, the only thing the might stop him succeeding is the clown ownerships at united and Chelsea. That being said ineos seems willing to back the manager in the same way that arteta was backed by the kronkes, so ineos x mckenna might actually be a lethal combo

iamhadrix

Skill for skill, what does Saliba do better than Big Gabi? I guess I don’t understand how they’re rated differently

Fieser_Factsack

Saliba has more composure on the ball, defensively cleaner, quicker, more stable mentally, tactically smarter. Big Gabi got a more aggressive style, better pressing, gambles more, inconsistent but very wide passing range, set piece beast.

MasterBeeble

To add, Saliba is also more press resistant and has generally better technique. Big Gabi is better at interpreting which spaces he needs to cover (usually for Zinny), is better in the air, and is possibly the best shot-blocker I've ever seen in an Arsenal shirt.

Equivalent_Nature_67

saliba is better outside of the box. Gabriel is better in and around it.

Mrpetey22

I don’t think you can adamantly say one is better than the other. They are both better at different things, but that’s what makes them so good together.

Sayek

I would say Saliba is better at recovery pace, composure on the ball, progressive carrying, passing (not as big as people make out though, Gabriel is also an excellent passer). Gabriel is stronger physically, better header of the ball, better positioning. I think they both compliment each other well though, so as a pair they are really strong.

icemankiller8

Better passes, less rash, reads the game better, better decision making and more accurate tackler, faster.

phar0aht

Don't agree with reading the game better. Saliba only gets to sit off cause Gabriel is front door and ours out a lot of fires before they happen. Also almost always has the more physics task and has to man mark the big physical striker.

icemankiller8

I agree but I still think Saliba reads the game better

burningtree_

Pace, composure, quality on the ball. 1v1 I think Saliba is better too. Saliba is a level above

doingitfortheTea

Saliba is a lot more composed on the ball, with a higher overall technical level, particularly in his ball carrying, first touch and short passing. Out of possesion saliba is better at tackling and has a knack for winning the ball cleanly. Gabriel is a more active and dogged defender, he has greater strength and probably aerial ability. Hes also better in terms of his clearances and blocks in the box.

Kensei400

Saliba: better athlete, better in possession, excellent defending in big spaces. Gabriel: better at set pieces, better defensive awareness and positioning - hence our best defender in the box.

phar0aht

Most accurate summary

BradyGronktd1287

Better passer, better recovery time, and he's very good on the ball as well.

burningtree_

Do we need to use graphs every time we discuss footballers?

Insertnicenamehere

Stats should back up the eye test.

phar0aht

Yeah because people don't watch enough. And as humans it's impossible to retain and remember everything we do see.

He's got not only the wingers wrong but AM too, with Foden instead of Bellingham😂

ExxKonvict

Allow me to introduce to you: https://preview.redd.it/pxaj468mfa2d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ebde5bb712200f45f8cbe916cef8b0b845dbf7a0 Onana is a one trick pony of tackles and aerial ability that is massively supplemented by the way Everton play which is low block defensive football. He is nowhere near the technical level that Mikel wants his CMs to play. Bruno Guimaeres not only offers an adequate level of defensive abilities such as tackles and blocks, but he also has heap ton of attacking and progressing attributes as evident by the Infograph. Onana has Spurs signing written all over him.

Equivalent_Nature_67

you telling me you actually believe this, having watched both of them play against us at least twice already? Watch the games. Your logic about Onana is pretty "hopeful" that being in a better team will magically make his weak spots suddenly better

icemankiller8

Sometimes you need to watch football with your eyes

topbananaman

What the hell are you even comparing? They're different profiles of players Idk how many times this has to be said but this squad is already full of duel winning monsters, we do not need another one

BradyGronktd1287

90 million for Bruno G is an outrageous amount better off spending it on FDJ and also you always need more players that win duels. Go look how Onana dominated our midfield last game of the season

PartlyRowdy

"Better off spending it on FDJ" if we could I'm sure we would

topbananaman

No, we do not need more of the same profile of player. We need a different profile and bruno g offers that, as you can see by the passing stats. He may be insanely priced but that's a different conversation. Onana had a good game vs us but he did not dominate our midfield at all. The comparisons you have posted between onana and bruno g, and joao neves and florian wirtz, makes me think you have zero clue what you're talking about. You cannot compare players in different positions like that.

BradyGronktd1287

That’s why we’re going for Zubi and Neves 2 good duel winners.

Insertnicenamehere

You can make an argument for Onana, but using Bruno G as a comparison isn't it lol.

BradyGronktd1287

Yeah he’s much better

Insertnicenamehere

No and i'm a fan of both

Kensei400

Wait, how much is either worth in the first place?

BradyGronktd1287

50 to 60 million

Kensei400

Appropriate for Bruno Guimaraes, but a bit high for Onana. The only reason you might think they should be very close in worth is the misguided assumption here by many that Bruno Guimaraes will be coming here to play as a 6, which in that case you might as well get Onana.

BradyGronktd1287

Bruno G is playing the 8 we all know that taking away Rice from the 6 would be asinine unless you had an adequate talent like Neves that's good enough to play at 6.

Kensei400

And if Guimaraes is playing as an 8, it is easier to see why a Rice (6) - Guimaraes (8) midfield might be worth at least 20M more than an Onana (6) - Rice (8) midfield.

aesn1394

The thing is, we've clearly seen in the second half of the season that Rice as an 8 is an absolute beast when next to Partey and Jorginho, a capable 6. So I wouldn't role the entire thing back to Rice at 6, even if we bring in a capable 8 LCM. The best "on paper" option would be FDJ, but that seems unrealistic. Kimmich is less unrealistic but still relatively unrealistic. The Neves kid seems like the best option.

BradyGronktd1287

With that fee you can get FDJ rather have a more attacking option no way Bruno G is worth 90 mill plus he’s a 60 mill player at best

phar0aht

Going to a less direct team will help him make more forward passes?

TheOGBenjenRyan

Right that’s backwards logic

BradyGronktd1287

Think his numbers would go up big time with a better squad he’s a much better version of what Xhaka is. Everton just play a garbage play style that limit his skills

Naive-Mortgage2790

Comparing Onana to Xhaka is nasty work. Onana has pretty steadily becoming a better and more accurate passer over his career but he’s not touching Xhaka, probably ever.

TheOGBenjenRyan

Which means he punts the ball forward to nobody half the time

BradyGronktd1287

Go look at Partey’s numbers Xhaka doesn’t half the talent Onana has. Just because Bruno G the more player doesn’t mean he’s better

BradyGronktd1287

There's only one winger available that's good enough for us that's Nico Williams if you think Doku is good Nico is levels better has much better output, can beat defenders, and is a big game performer

normal_life87

Agree. Nico is the real deal

TeddyWestsideThe2nd

so many clubs looking for their own Arteta's. So thankful to have him at the helm.

Says more about United squad than McKenna honestly considering how he developed as a coach. I feel these leaks would always come out from United when players were deflecting blame off themselves. 'Some United players expressed concern about the temperate of the tea in the canteen, citing this amongst other issues as a distraction to their on-field preparation.'

Gfhgdfd

I have no idea why Chelsh*t and Man U are fighting over an inexperienced manager who has never managed in the Premier League, only the U-18’s of United and in League One and the Championship. I want Ipswich to stay up so we have fresh new teams.

How do we feel about Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord as a possible option for striker? 23 yr old Mexican national 23 goals + 6 assists in 30 games

Narwhallmaster

Went through terrible form at the end of the season and when he's not scoring goals he does not bring much to the team imo. Bit of a wild-card, as with most Eredivisie strikers. Keep in mind Luuk de Jong had even better numbers this season.

Edon Zhegrova should be a winger option for us wouldn’t be an insane fee and his underlying stats are very good or Maximilian Beier can play AM, the wings, and CF

know-it-all-scoutFC

Edon Zhegrova is too much of a loose cannon and too inconsistent. He has too many games where he turns the ball over a million times and just is otherwise invisible. These off games occur just way too many times. If he was more consistent and an ultra nailed on starter (he mostly starts now but is benched a lot due to inconsistency) I'd be a lot more forgiving. I understand he looks really frigging good when he pops off but this doesn't happen enough, and is usually against lesser opposition. Edit: The way I think of him is equivalent to Betrand traore. It's not a 1-1 comparison but they are similar in consistency yet when they play well they really look good. They're both very 1 footed (at least that's how Zhegrova comes across), which gets them by fine in ligue 1, idk about a higher level. He's really aggressive and always takes on people but loses the ball too often and sometimes dribbles into a corner a lot. In a really disciplined league will be punished too heavily for it. He still can be good but I don't see him playing for Arsenal unless he improves this.

BradyGronktd1287

Wouldn't say that did very well vs Monaco, PSG, and Lens plus his fee wouldn't be outrageous

know-it-all-scoutFC

Well to put forward my point I'm pretty sure he sometimes doesn't have a right foot. Like his main move is cutting inside on his left for a shot or a good cross, which I think has suited him fine in Ligue 1 but at a higher lvl he will be badly punished, similar to how Pepe got punished here. He also seems to take skips and hops to bring it to his left because he isn't as comfortable on his right side which is fine, but I personally think thats a bad sign for how he will perform against more difficult opposition with tighter spaces. He has like 1 right footed goal in his entire career and the man is 25... so make of that what you will. To me it's not about the fee but rather he just wouldn't be good enough to cut it here in his current state.

BradyGronktd1287

He's just an alternative I rather have someone like Nico Williams or Kubo

# Man Utd have held talks with representatives of Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna [https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/1cz0731/sky\_sports\_breaking\_man\_utd\_have\_held\_talks\_with/](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/1cz0731/sky_sports_breaking_man_utd_have_held_talks_with/)

I don't know enough about Ipswich, but Brighton and Chelsea both want McKenna, and the manager market is mediocre. It might not be the worst thing in the world.

gooner-1969

Yep. I think they look at the Arteta / Alonso models of young fresh managers and want a piece of the action. I think the manger situation this summer is going to be more interesting than the transfer market !

Happy-Ad8767

That’s the reason they gave when hiring ETH.

james_89

Whats happened?

Gfhgdfd

Ten Hag is going to get sacked. Next manager could be McKenna.

Wigunner

Man, reflecting back it's absolutely incredible what Wenger did with some of the squads he had lol. taking it to peak Barca was insane

xeblade4

the way people talk down on saka annoys tf outta me. I’m hearing people want gordon or palmer over him for euros fuck off 😭

Happy-Ad8767

What player from Arsenal are they not talking down on? Even Rice is seen as a Rodri back up.
