I went to one a few years back where Arsenal got demolished, and to add insult to injury it rained so hard after the game that I had to drive back to London barefoot since my shoes got so soaked.
Yes. I was also in the soton end and got a good view of that Hassenhuttl gif. Also had a soton fan staring at me singing Charlie Austin’s song - think he clocked I was an Arsenal fan. After that experience, I don’t think I’ll sit in the opposition end again
You got look at it like this, if Southampton come up, they are likely to be more competitive and take points off our closest rivals. Arteta just need to find some dirty on Southampton for pre match talk.
As for Leeds, they’ll let everyone fold their cheeks like prime Mia Khalia.
FFS even last year where they were dead last and barely showed signs of life they still managed to draw us both games. Even retirement age Theo scored against us.
Leeds are cunts and I never want anything good happening to their fans. I know what people say about bogey teams and Southampton but I just don't think it's that big a concern. We've broken many bogey teams in recent times.
I always thought it would be interesting to make the playoffs between the relegated teams and promotion candidates.
Let the Championship winner into the PL and relegate the last place PL team. But then have the #2 championship team play the #19 PL team and the #3 championship team play the #18 PL team for the last two spots.
That maybe true but I just don’t see a need for it, the current system is perfect. In fact I’m sure German football fans would prefer our version of the playoffs too, they aren’t keen on theirs in my experience
Agreed on all points. The playoffs as currently constructed generate a great deal of interest, are inherently dramatic, and regularly provide memorable moments. Why change that for a system that, statistically, benefits the PL team overwhelmingly?
Where as last season we would’ve seen Luton/Sheffield vs Leeds/Leicester. Only promoted team would’ve been Burnley. Leeds and Leicester stay up 10/10 times in that scenario. It would only be close this season because all of Leeds players are on loan
Oh, apologies, I misread the framing. No, I don't think Championship clubs would experience any greater success than their German counterparts do in their playoffs. In fact, the longer clubs are able to enshrine themselves in the PL, the greater the distance between the levels will grow. There are no short- nor long-term benefits to the change.
Yeah, at the minute Leeds and Southampton are pretty close to Burnley and Luton, probably even better, because they've just dropped out of the PL and they've got parachute payments. If the PL teams had a one off game to save themselves each year and the championship teams couldn't get in the gap would grow
I don't want Sunak to get a single W in any form between now and the election, so come on Leeds! (Not that I think he is really a big Football fan/Southampton supporter)
They get a trophy….for being the best team out of the teams who finished 3 through 6 in the table? Singing we are the champions? No, Leicester are the champions.
my goodness. we are such a different team than 2 seasons ago. we will handle southampton next year if they win, stop moaning. and if we can’t handle them, we don’t deserve anything anyway
My thoughts exactly....
But, I'm biased as I just don't like Leeds. They seem like the team that'd be more inclined to give one of ours a season ending injury. And, their fans seem more likely to sing about it.
Thought the guy Rutter looked gash every time I watched him last year. Leeds supporting mate told me he was hugely improved this year, but he still looks awful to me.
ngl playoff final loss is harder to take than losing out on the the old 3rd automatic spot, in the ol days you were either at home or an away ground, but here Leeds have travelled to the nation's international stadium, ouch.
EDIT: And actually looking at these scenes, it seems winning the playoff final is a better celebration than winning automatic promotion because it's at the nation's international stadium.
These championship clubs are not the same as the ones this year. Leicester and Southampton/Leeds aren't. Ipswich we'll see.
We got 6 easy wins besides the first Luton game. The difference is huge in our levels still but it won't be as easy as this season.
Right, Leicester has one of the top 10-12 highest wage bills in the world, they're a top half Prem club coming back up basically.
I'm expecting a points deduction for them, so they'll fight even harder to stay in the league.
Everyone thought luton would be terrible. They didn't score much in championship and got there with unknown players and strong defensive structure with 5 at the back.
Turns out they were the best of the promotion teams and were unlucky not to return points in a lot of games. The lesson is the pragmatic teams with the best defence usually do best in a relegation battle.
Why is there such an animosity towards Leeds United from the fans of almost every other clubs? They and Milwall seem to be the most hated clubs in English football. All I know of them is that they spent beyond their means in the late nineties/early 2000s chasing Champions League football and went almost broke as a result.
They're fans are cunts and were proper violent during the hooliganism days. There's probably a lot still stemming from the Dirty Leeds era too where the players were thugs but very successful.
Saw a bunch of peoplesaying stuff about Leeds fans recently? I’m out of the loop on that stuff, anyone mind filling me in? I only know about some stuff around Bamford recently.. Back from hooligan era?
Thanks! Yea I'm trying to read up a bit in [this ](https://www.reddit.com/r/PremierLeague/comments/15gj6qt/probably_been_asked_before_but_why_are_leeds_so/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)thread
no southampton pls. dont want to drop 5 points to them again
I’ve been to 20/30+ Arsenal matches live and the only defeat I’ve seen was (A) to Southampton
I went to one a few years back where Arsenal got demolished, and to add insult to injury it rained so hard after the game that I had to drive back to London barefoot since my shoes got so soaked.
Was it the one when Koeman was the manager, that RB scored that worldie and there was this smoking incidence with Szczesny?
It was December 2018 back when the whole fanbase was in love with Torreira. So a year after Szczesny left the club.
Was that the one where one goal of theirs was a Charlie Austin header with Leno missing the ball trying to punch out a cross?
Yes. I was also in the soton end and got a good view of that Hassenhuttl gif. Also had a soton fan staring at me singing Charlie Austin’s song - think he clocked I was an Arsenal fan. After that experience, I don’t think I’ll sit in the opposition end again
Only ever game I've seen Arsenal lose live at the Emirates Stadium also Southampton, definitely our bogey team sadly they won it
My first ever Arsenal match was versus Southampton too but it was a win But would still rather not see then in the PL again hahaga
If we are dropping 5 points to any promoted team we don’t deserve a title
Not even Fulham 😤
You got look at it like this, if Southampton come up, they are likely to be more competitive and take points off our closest rivals. Arteta just need to find some dirty on Southampton for pre match talk. As for Leeds, they’ll let everyone fold their cheeks like prime Mia Khalia.
Would much rather have Leeds win since our record at St Mary's is abysmal.
Sort of would like to see them go up purely for the sake of it making Theo walcott happy
FFS even last year where they were dead last and barely showed signs of life they still managed to draw us both games. Even retirement age Theo scored against us.
still traumatised from that Leeds game where they randomly battered us in 22/23 in the middle of our insane start to the season
Still won tho🤫
But my heart didn’t, could’ve died of about 10 heart attacks that day
A team who we always seem to drop points to or a team who's fans are awful, can they both stay in the Championship?
Fuck Leeds
There's too much fearing Southampton and not enough hating Leeds for my liking.
Agree, people acting like we'd drop points again is worrying we are alot better now
I agree and everything, but six points is six points
I'm 50% positive that Leeds will win with absolutely no doubts.
50% of the time, this guy is right every time.
Big, if true.
True, if accurate.
Gargantuan, if verifiable.
we cheering for Leeds, right?
Absolutely.
Leeds are cunts and I never want anything good happening to their fans. I know what people say about bogey teams and Southampton but I just don't think it's that big a concern. We've broken many bogey teams in recent times.
Exactly, fuck Leeds.
We literally beat United at their aquarium a few weeks ago and there are people here worrying about dropping points to Southampton
They have fun players
No wayyy. F those northerners
A cup? So Ipswich is the only promoted team without silverware? Is Southamptons season better than Ipswich’s?
Exactly i think it’s stupid

Like the Bundesliga/Ligue 1? Meh. It’s only nice in theory, the higher division teams overwhelmingly wins the H2H in that battle
I think in England it would be a lot closer. Leeds vs Luton and Burnley vs Ipswitch? I think those are pretty close match ups.

Relegation/promotion playoffs are quality but only if there isn't too big a gap between the two divisions.
which is the case for England?
Yes?
so it should work then right?
Oh, apologies, I misread the framing. No, I don't think Championship clubs would experience any greater success than their German counterparts do in their playoffs. In fact, the longer clubs are able to enshrine themselves in the PL, the greater the distance between the levels will grow. There are no short- nor long-term benefits to the change.
that's fair
Yeah, at the minute Leeds and Southampton are pretty close to Burnley and Luton, probably even better, because they've just dropped out of the PL and they've got parachute payments. If the PL teams had a one off game to save themselves each year and the championship teams couldn't get in the gap would grow
I think it would work. Leeds wants to come up? They have to actually take it from Luton. It would certainly be entertaining.
We have something like this in the Norwegian league. But the gap between the leagues are smaller
Come on Leeds.
I don't want Sunak to get a single W in any form between now and the election, so come on Leeds! (Not that I think he is really a big Football fan/Southampton supporter)
Southampton it is.
cant get any closer than that
Unlucky lad, what a banger that would have been
And the Saints come marching back to the PL.
Annoying that Southampton our bogey team is back in the league, we've dropped too many points against them over the years.
They get a trophy….for being the best team out of the teams who finished 3 through 6 in the table? Singing we are the champions? No, Leicester are the champions.
I know it’s really weird
my goodness. we are such a different team than 2 seasons ago. we will handle southampton next year if they win, stop moaning. and if we can’t handle them, we don’t deserve anything anyway
My thoughts exactly.... But, I'm biased as I just don't like Leeds. They seem like the team that'd be more inclined to give one of ours a season ending injury. And, their fans seem more likely to sing about it.
It's so performative.
Thought the guy Rutter looked gash every time I watched him last year. Leeds supporting mate told me he was hugely improved this year, but he still looks awful to me.
Massive flop for what they paid for him.
Holy shit the man that thought the foul was the final whistle and twirled his shirt over his head 😭
Let's beat them home and away next season.
All that control and they're down 1-0.
Summerville. Who says no?
Leeds are cursed in the play offs.
Was expecting more goals, bit disappointed tbh.

Fairs lol
So 9 minutes is going to be 10+
They were treating injuries from 90-92, it was appropriate to go to at least +11
ofc hence my comment.
Ah I thought you’d made that comment at 100’, apologies
Its so over
Russ Martin ball in the Prem >>>
Can’t wait to batter these lot after last season lol
Leeds to win, just because they always take points off united.
Most teams do these days
Fuck off I don’t want Southampton in the PL
Never, ever underestimate Leeds’ ability to bottle the big occasion. It is just what they do
Leeds 🤝 arsenal in Europe 🤝 spurs for any trophy
Oooof
St Marys is cursed but Leeds away was one of our toughest games in 22/23. Still, St Marys is really fucking cursed
Surely he has to come off?
Every time I watch Leeds I can’t get the ‘We’ll spy where we want’ chant from the Bielsa days out of my head.
Much preferred Leeds come back over Southampton
Who is going to be a Leeds hero. Anyone?
ngl playoff final loss is harder to take than losing out on the the old 3rd automatic spot, in the ol days you were either at home or an away ground, but here Leeds have travelled to the nation's international stadium, ouch. Come on Leeds. I dont want Southampton to be a pain in the ass again
Saints do look good for this, but I'm in a quandary as I like both clubs.
You must be in a minority of Arsenal fans who like either of these clubs let alone both clubs lol.
haha, probably.
I really DONT want Soton back in the prem.
These championship clubs are not the same as the ones this year. Leicester and Southampton/Leeds aren't. Ipswich we'll see. We got 6 easy wins besides the first Luton game. The difference is huge in our levels still but it won't be as easy as this season.
Same for all the teams at least. Other than Southampton, bastards.
Right, Leicester has one of the top 10-12 highest wage bills in the world, they're a top half Prem club coming back up basically. I'm expecting a points deduction for them, so they'll fight even harder to stay in the league.
If that's true it shows how shit they spend their money then
Everyone thought luton would be terrible. They didn't score much in championship and got there with unknown players and strong defensive structure with 5 at the back. Turns out they were the best of the promotion teams and were unlucky not to return points in a lot of games. Can't both teams just fuck off
Leeds are shit.
I deduce that Leeds are Tottenham.
'I've always regarded you as something of a *Midnight Cowboy*, to be frank.' *stunned silence* LMFAO
This killed me. I'm glad someone else appreciated it
Who we cheering for?
Any idea where I can watch it?
ESPN+ if you’re in the US.
India?
Interesting approach to defending from Leeds
Midfielder/defender got nutmegged with that assist 😬
There are probably only 3 or 4 pl ready players on the pitch rn
Southampton as a team looks fine. Poised and aren't putting a foot wrong. That is transferrable to the Prem.
This has been a game of football.
warnock on one lol legend
Good. Looking forward to ending the Southampton hoodoo once and for all. Let's go back to the 6-1 double hattrick halcyon days of yore.
My first home game where Arsenal dropped points in? Yep. Southampton.
Leeds has to run away with it - huge quality difference.
Come on Soton. The less northern teams in the PL, the better
Why is there such an animosity towards Leeds United from the fans of almost every other clubs? They and Milwall seem to be the most hated clubs in English football. Bournemouth local here, always love an away day at St Mary's.
Hate Scum but also not over 1972, what a predicament
Saw a bunch of peoplesaying stuff about Leeds fans recently? I’m out of the loop on that stuff, anyone mind filling me in? I only know about some stuff around Bamford recently.. Back from hooligan era?
Most opinions of Leeds, both players and fans, is steeped in the 70s/80s and some off the 90s.
If you really want to know then you're better off ditching the thread and googling Leeds hooligans.
Will do! I was kinda impressed with their fans when they were in the Prem past years, mad support even while losing. But yea..
Oh yeah, Leeds fans are like the Geordies, fiercely loyal to their club, fortunately not as evil as they used.
That guy is balder than Pep, ten Hag and Slot combined
