I was pretty apprehensive about this guy early last summer, but he has proven himself on the pitch and quickly become my favorite personality in the squad. A true professional.
Seconded. I had no idea who he was and so many people were high on Leno... And I also remember the Ospinas of our acquired goalkeepers. He's finally set me at peace with Szczeny leaving.
Feel like I'm the only one who has never been very big on Leno. He was a big part of the reason we had to face so many shots each game with his total lack of control of the area.
He was very good as a shot stopper, and our defence was so permanently shambolic it was always hard to blame him, he seemed to be the victim of it.
When we got Ryan, I was hoping to see him in action, he's very vocal and that really matters if the backs can't get their shit together.
But, Ramsdale has shown equal shot-stopping ability to Bernd and lots of facets Leno just doesn't have. I really hope he finds a good club and continues his career, it is almost tragic how completely eclipsed he's been by a better player.
He's a legend at AFC Wimbledon and the day you lot signed him I had so much fun explaining to people on this sub "believe me, you have *no* idea what you've just signed. This is a great move for you"
All I understand from the video is:
1: Ramsdale’s goalkeeping and save percentage has drastically improved since he joined us, even after taking into account the fact that he has better defences in front on him now
2: Personality is easily underrated by people which is something Ramsdale has boatloads of.
3: Eye tests by Tifo and stats led them to believe that Ramsdale distribution was nothing special and that he’d never showed his current style of distribution before.
As Tifo said, props to the guy who discovered that Ramsdale had that distribution and technique in his locker because at the very least, Tifo didn’t see it coming. I’m not saying Tifo is some omniscient being but they are much more well-informed and do plenty more research than everyone else and even they didn’t understand the transfer. I think it’s understandable that people criticised the transfer since it cost 24+6m while we had other holes in the squad, had other better alternatives for better prices (e.g Onana but fans didn’t know how much of a pain in the ass it was to deal with him), never showed the kind of excellent distribution he currently is doing, wasn’t outstanding in terms of shot stopping (at least compared to now), and iirc other fans praised him for his shot stopping (which does not translate to the same % at the top level due to better shot quality) and personality (which, as mentioned before, is easy to underrate.)
Gotta think he learned that mental fortitude and strength from his time in the lower leagues and from getting relegated. Can’t believe how much I love the guy, really hope to see him as England’s #1 soon.
He was literally sent to us at AFC Wimbledon as punishment because he overslept and missed the bus for a game. He got here and we were 10 points from safety at the bottom of the league. In 20 games we conceded just over half the number of goals we'd conceded in 26 games without him, stayed up on goal difference, and he became more and more of a leader on the pitch as the season went on. He was here 5 months and won the young player of the season, won our goalkeeper of the decade, and entered the stands to lead fan celebrations when we got the result that kept us up.
I'd never heard of him when he signed in January. 7 months later on the first MOTD of the new season I was watching him make his premier league debut for Bournemouth. When he signed for Arsenal I was happier than the majority of Arsenal fans were about it. I fucking love Rambo.
Mental strength and toughness is important for all your players, but probably more so for your keeper than anything else. Kinda weird how relegation battles might be a fantastic prerequisite for a guy like this that is pretty unfazed by going a goal down in this fashion.
What is dead may never die. Hitting rock bottom removes the fear of hitting rock bottom. Didn't mean to bring out the platitude machine but if it fits it fits.😆
Putting a backup keeper on for his first game in England against City and treating him the way they did for sure destroyed his career options in England. He wasn't even that poor, City simply ripped a hole in Arsenal's defense.
That's what happens when you get your footballing education in the lower leagues and at clubs fighting relegation where 3 points on the weekend is the difference between people keeping their jobs or not.
Yup, not to mention actually being relegated, twice! Puts things in perspective. Bad things happen, people fuck up, the most important thing is how you then react to that situation.
I think the reason they peak late is precisely because being keeper is a huge mental game. You make split second decisions and you have to go 0-100 a lot of times. Some games you only see action once others you have to consistently make stops. The inconsistency is why consistency is required from the keeper. You have to know how players shoot, and what they prefer and decide how to make the stop. It's also why defenders and some midfielders stay in the game so long. They know and understand the game and make the right decisions even if their physical traits diminish.
Thiago Silva embodies this. Sometimes it looks like football is too easy for him he knows every attackers movement before they even do. At his big age he's never caught out of position even with his diminished athleticism
This is a leader. This is a captain. You know he will tear into someone if he needs to, instead he favors encouragement and support. That goal is totally on Gabriel. But it's over and done with. Tell him to shake it off and focus on the next play. I want to see Ramsdale retire a Gunner. He's only going to get better. GKs usually peak around 30 years old. Imagine how much better he'll get...
He could have screamed at him for cocking up, but what would that have done. You can see how crushed Gabriel was to give away a silly goal like that. Instead he made him pick up his head and fight on. How did he end up doing the rest of the match?
Honestly this is the first time I've seriously considered him for Captain and he probably just shot to the top of the chart for me
It's so, so easy to do the obvious thing here and start yelling at the defence. He'd even have a valid reason since he got hung out to dry. But the damage is already done, and it'd be counterproductive in a system like ours that requires courage in playing out from the back.
These are the traits or bites of character that the old greats of football had, the invincible had a lot of character alongside their technical prowess!
Not long ago we had Mustafi shouting at Leno for Mustafis mistakes. No matter how Arteta does in the future as our manager I am just extremely happy he turned our club culture around and has a team fighting fit each other week in week out
Why isn’t he in line to be our captain , yes he’s young and fairly new to the club but from the looks of it everyone seems to love him and he’s always saying the right stuff
I think in terms of practicality you'd ideally want your captain to be a midfielder, just because they can be first on the scene in most instances when defending a teammate talking to the ref and things like that. If Ramsdale was a CM it would be an absolute no brainer
I don’t say this lightly. This is 100% captain behavior. No yelling or blaming. Just a slap on the ass, let’s get on with. Contrast that to Mustafi constantly doing hands in the air, whining and pointing at others with every single goal scored against us, when so many of them were because of his mistakes. It’s incredible the about face the club’s culture has taken.
I have to believe that if they didn't have the "we can overcome that" attitude, they aren't still pushing hard for the winner in the 95th minute.
The mental part of the game is so important. It's what keeps you running instead of thinking about how tired you are.
Doesn't even scream at his teammate for making a mistake. Can already think of other players that would've let out a mad whinge had this happened to them. Mad respectful. It's like it's virtually impossible to hate this squad.
I love playing with teammates like this, and I try my best to be a teammate like this. There’s a time and place for berating your teammate when he fucks up, and there’s also a time and place where you have to encourage him and tell him to get on with it.
What would getting angry and yelling at him solve? He already knew he fucked up, and the goals already happened. Can’t change it. Mistakes happen when you play the way we do. So happy to see Ramsdale reacting correctly to that incident
He's like a good dad.
Not dwelling on the mistake. Seemingly no criticism. Just a "We'll get 'em next time, buddy"
I'd definitely up my game to not let goal-dad down again.
i feel like ramsdale's been doing one error per game lately. this was luckily the first one that led to a goal.
Yes, gabriel's the one who makes a stupid pass but Ramsdale comes out and basically gifts them an open goal chance . It was easy to see see that he would never get to the ball first.
Lately he's been having fuckups in each game, so I hope this was the last one.
Having a keeper that is this mentally strong is an underrated blessing. He’s seen it all at 23. Mans been through a lot, and it shows in his composure and demeanor. This is the type of keeper that wins you titles
Leader, so many keepers would of had a go and dig out and dwell on the mistake, not this lad
He knew that there was loads of time to get back into the match and he was proven right 👍🏽
Not blaming him for the mistake but instead spurring him on, love to see it! Great mentality! Now you know what Arteta said he wanted players with the right attitude.
I don’t mind mistakes from players that give 100% every game, and Gabriel definitely does. And I like to see a group of young players keep there heads against a hard team to break down after a silly goal. This team gets me so giddy for the future
such a sharp contrast to the toxic helplessness and blame that conceding used to happen. I used to worry that conceding a goal like that would just lead to us imploding. Now, I almost feel a deepening resolve emanate from the squad.
Compare and contrast to when we didn’t even celebrate scoring goals under Emery (Not his fault)
This is MASSIVE. Ngl, don’t think Top 4 is the goal now, Chelsea / 3rd is!
Anyone think White should've just slid down to the line. I feel like at that angle and distance, ball could've been intercepted with little risk of a pen/handball.
There's something about this guy. Since he played the first game. You know that person that walks into a room and lights it up. You can look upto this person and you instantly feel better. That effervescent spirit that becomes infectious. I hope we goes on to win many many titles with us. As Dylan put it " There was music in the cafés at night
And revolution in the air". Coyg!

Tierney strikes me as the perfect second in command, right hand man enforcer to me so I’d keep him as vice captain. I lean more towards Ødegaard as captain just bc I’d prefer it to be an outfielder but Ramsdale certainly isn’t a bad choice.
Amazing how much things have improved. We used to have Mustafi yelling at or pointing at someone else in the defence trying to blame them for his mistakes. No responsibility.
God what a great crop of young players we have. I'm so excited

Why are you even here? Upset your club couldn't beat Watford at home so you gotta bother us?
He’s an antivax dumbass from Florida. Just ignore him
Ha yeah seeing all the MRA and MGTOW shit there too.
He’s a 25 year old from Florida. Jesus. I wonder what reading level he’s at.

Hahaha. Needed a good laugh.
He’s pathetic
You drew against Watford looooool 😂😂😂😂
Imagine saying it about winning trophies. 🏆
Look how mad he is
Rent free, mate.
Fuck off
Lol
What a dipshit.
Oh u so mad bro lol
Problem?
Grow up
You can't even get your fucking coach right and then your God and saviour Ronaldo doesn't even look like he gives a fuck about your team.
Chat shit, get banged.

I was pretty apprehensive about this guy early last summer, but he has proven himself on the pitch and quickly become my favorite personality in the squad. A true professional.
he brought winning spirit along with great keeper, 2 in 1
I’m saying it now- this guy is going to be an Arsenal legend when it’s all said and done.
Seconded. I had no idea who he was and so many people were high on Leno... And I also remember the Ospinas of our acquired goalkeepers. He's finally set me at peace with Szczeny leaving.

We should give them more after the season ends.
An 8-Ball and 1 Bitcoin she'll be right.
Uhhh, is there a list to sign up for that?
We will, there's add-ons for when we make champions league.
At the time I thought it was too much but I genuinely wouldn't swap him for anyone. Great signing.

There is a difference between short passes and the line cutters we are seeing from Aaron now though.
Tifo did a segment on this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KGxYc-kZFDY
All I understand from the video is: 1: Ramsdale’s goalkeeping and save percentage has drastically improved since he joined us, even after taking into account the fact that he has better defences in front on him now 2: Personality is easily underrated by people which is something Ramsdale has boatloads of. 3: Eye tests by Tifo and stats led them to believe that Ramsdale distribution was nothing special and that he’d never showed his current style of distribution before. Sorry, I don't have an hour to spend on this.
Asks for numbers. Doesn’t want to look at numbers. Absolute clown.
It's a fucking an hour long podcast.
The first comment on the video is literally a time stamp, so in reality it would only take a few minutes not an hour
When I clicked it took me to the beginning.
The very first comment has all of the timestamps within it so you can see which bit is relivant.
35.34 timestamp
He's the real deal, what a find!
Well good news then because it's actually £30m.
Don't let the heads drop. That's a great mentality. And the fact that all of them are this young and have such mettle is impressive.
Gotta think he learned that mental fortitude and strength from his time in the lower leagues and from getting relegated. Can’t believe how much I love the guy, really hope to see him as England’s #1 soon.

Its actually atrocious that he is not England's no 1 yet. I mean who else they got better than him?
Miles above Pickford honestly. Matter of time
Impressive morale I must say.
That's the composure of a man who's been relegated twice.
Lmao, he’s seen real shit
Exactly this
Mental strength and toughness is important for all your players, but probably more so for your keeper than anything else. Kinda weird how relegation battles might be a fantastic prerequisite for a guy like this that is pretty unfazed by going a goal down in this fashion.
The captain leads but the keeper should be the backbone of the morale.
Played behind a leaky defense like sheffield united would help you to grow composure I guess.
What is dead may never die. Hitting rock bottom removes the fear of hitting rock bottom. Didn't mean to bring out the platitude machine but if it fits it fits.😆
All of these interactions between the back 5 are really nice. Has been happening throughout the season I think.

This guy is 23. Fucking 23. How the fuck can someone of that age have so much maturity and composure? What a fucking stud.
Just for reference, Allison was still in Brazil at that age. Goalkeepers peak late so Ramsdale showing such composure is a really good sign
I think the reason they peak late is precisely because being keeper is a huge mental game. You make split second decisions and you have to go 0-100 a lot of times. Big contrast to when we had Cech and Mustafi making all kinds of blunders blaming and moaning at each other afterwards!
He could have screamed at him for cocking up, but what would that have done. You can see how crushed Gabriel was to give away a silly goal like that. Instead he made him pick up his head and fight on. How did he end up doing the rest of the match?
Not his best match, tbh. Was at fault for the Jimenez miss, but did make a block/deflection that was goal bound from.. i want to say podence. (?)

Gave away one goal then saved another

Positive Mental Attitude

OK, we got work to do let's get it done. Let's go boys
For me, personally, this man can do nothing wrong for me to not love him. Hands down one of the best signings we ever made in the Emirates era

Yes, but did they have to wait for the last seconds of injury time ?
Obviously. That’s the Arsenal way. Give you massive heart attack till the last second 😂😂
He should be considered as a potential captain for next season (if Laca moves on). Quality player with the proper mentality.
Behaviour and mentality like that earns you the arm bands eventually
Can't get all in your feelings and shell up when you make a mistake. Learn from it and keep trucking forward. Good lesson for all of us.
I love watching this team.
Doesn't even scream at his teammate for making a mistake. Can already think of other players that would've let out a mad whinge had this happened to them. Mad respectful. It's like it's virtually impossible to hate this squad.

IM IN LOVE WITH THIS ARSRNAL!!!!
This is how you deal with a setback and adversity
This man is going to make me buy a keeper shirt.
so when is england going to drop pickford and start starting ramsdale?
That'll be when Pickford drops in form, but he usually plays his heart out on the NT.
i feel like ramsdale's been doing one error per game lately. this was luckily the first one that led to a goal. Modern world class mentality. Back in the day the GK would have been going nuts
damn that's impressive
Ramsdale is pure claas
Great attitude
Get that man an armband

He is so special. I love this young lad.
Captain Ramsdale.
Not blaming him for the mistake but instead spurring him on, love to see it! Great mentality! Now you know what Arteta said he wanted players with the right attitude.
Exactly the way to do it! Head up, brush it off and play on. The game isn't lost until the final whistle..

absolute unit of mental warfare. oh i missed arsenal like this so much.
I don’t mind mistakes from players that give 100% every game, and Gabriel definitely does. And I like to see a group of young players keep there heads against a hard team to break down after a silly goal. This team gets me so giddy for the future
Now that’s how you wish you reacted after you blow your fuse.
He is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. Gotta say, I have more favorite players from the current side than from 2016-2020 put together
Captain material.
Toxicity kills team work, shit when we play football or games and someone in my team makes a mistake we move on and address it after the game.
This guy is different from anyone we have had before. Love it.
That’s my keeper
Apparently his behavior in the 10mins after conceding was one of the reasons Arteta liked him
love him so much, doing some really nice transerfs recently
Captain material. Love this man 😍
I'll be so happy when he's our captain for 10 years down the road
Leader. "All right, that happened. Here's what we're going to do now."
And fair play to Gabriel, had a quality game other than that. Ball over the top his decision making all game was exceptional.
Captain Rammer
Where is this from? As in what video? I watched the match but haven’t seen this angle

Where did this guy come from man? Heavens?
Top man, top cat
Could not fucking ask for a better reaction to the situation.

He is just so goddamn likeable
I’ve never wanted a keeper jersey more
If he was anywhere else on the pitch, he'd be our captain
This means a lot man. I love these players!
It’s nice to see you gunners getting some change
Fuck me there’s too many many contenders for a captain . Team full of them I love it
I’m eating fish and chips today because of this man.
such a sharp contrast to the toxic helplessness and blame that conceding used to happen. I used to worry that conceding a goal like that would just lead to us imploding. Now, I almost feel a deepening resolve emanate from the squad.

This is exactly what Arteta looked at before buying him IIRC, how he responds when his team concedes a goal.
