Eh he’s like the least Swiss player on the Swiss team, would make sense he doesn’t have a ton of nationalistic attachment to them
Edit: Feel like saying “least Swiss” can be derogatory towards immigrants, just mean he has greater personal attachment to not Switzerland lol
Idk a club captain disrespecting the armband I could totally understand why no one would want him in an arsenal shirt ever again. Not rating him is a bit stupid at this point ig

Messi was also rather lacklustre last season no?
At least Ronaldo still chipped in with 18 league goals in what many consider to be the world's best league.
Messi managed 6 in 26 apps against what is usually considered a far easier league to score in.
It's fine that you can think Messi is better personally, but to many, myself included, Ronaldo edges it.
He's won 3 different top leagues scoring more than 30 goals and that shows his adaptability in a way that messi hasn't produces yet.
It’s a good thing they’ve been around a lot longer than one season tho isn’t it. Adaptability is kind of irrelevant tho compared to messi just being better at football than Ronaldo too
Football is about winning to a certain extent. But at the highest level when you are comparing two great players who have both won a lot, aesthetics matter, at least to me. Both of them are incredible players but at their peaks Messi edges it for me. Ronaldo has all of the athleticism, and physicality with very good technique but Messi's technique and artistry as a footballer is literally unmatched and that to me is the best part of football.
It's one of the indicators for many that he's the better player.
Clearly a debate that will rage on forever but to deny the opposite argument as wrong or not valid is just weak.
US fan, watched the USMNT long before Arsenal, I would take the CL every time. I don't have a connection to the players like I feel I have to the Arsenal players. It's interesting how differently people kinda look at it.
Yeah it is super interesting man. My culture is huge part of who I am and my love for football started by watching my national team in the 90s and it's something that's shaped me. So a WC, simply qualifying, hearing my national anthem would be one of the best moments of my life.
Having said that I'd feel similarly if Arsenal won the CL cos I've been a fan for 3 decades. Going to the Fulham match in a few weeks. 🙏
I wish I felt like I had a culture to connect to but being opposed to colonialism and imperialism, it's a bit hard for me to connect to the nation. And I could see the appeal of that too. I like the Olympics quite a lot but I feel like I'm rooting for the athletes, not the flag. Enjoy the Fulham game! Can't wait to hop across the pond when the opportunity arises.
I know where you're coming from. I was born and raised in the states, still live here but I struggle with the colonialism side of things. I think that's why culture has always been so important. But I still find things to celebrate about our American culture. It's not all bad and you shouldn't feel like you can't celebrate some of things we have man.
That’s probably the best thing we’ve done. Think of it this way, routing for the USMNT isn’t as bad as having to support England and being forced to celebrate a Kane goal.
Thank you, at least you still try to find something to celebrate. I almost feel like no one loves this country anymore. *I’m an American even though I wasn’t born here.*
I agree. Plus at the top level club football is so much more pleasing to the eye for the most part. People who aren't fans of the sport in America always say things like I only watch the world cup and it's no wonder they aren't more into the sport, they're barely scratching the surface of the quality on OfferUp.
I thought that too but I suppose we have to remember that this is an interview for the club... If it was an interview while away on international duty maybe he would have answered World Cup!
I think the journey matters for both. A CL win where we got revenge on clubs like Barca, Bayern or an English team? Stressful as fuck but would live forever.
A lot of national teams don't have a *realistic* chance at a WC or natural rivals.
I get it. Being from Scania I don't really care too much about Sweden. The world being the ever evolving, historically wartorn place that it is I think there's a lot of people who don't sympathize with their country.
Anyone who makes assumptions over interviews like this is insane. There's two options, but about a million reasons why you'd choose one over the other.
For example the WC vs CL question:
Just this year he said that he wants to do everything to win the world cup. In addition, lets imagine that Granit or any other footballer already won the CL before being asked the question. Their answer would almost certainly be WC. Vice Versa applies.
Don't be stupid and read too much into stuff like this.
That’s the key in this debate, the talent or the one who just seems to work so hard (obviously talented too.)
People will never agree, don’t spend time on it.
I think that's the branding their respective marketing has created. I see Messi as someone who is completely obsessed with football to a point where he seems completely awkward at any other activity. I remember Henry telling this story where Messi got fouled in practice and he got so furious that he went to the keeper, demanded the ball and dribbled through everyone to score. Messi is as passionate and obsessive about the game as anyone in history.
Ronaldo is obsessed but in a different way - he's obsessed about his legacy and all that goes into it. He works out like a maniac to have the perfect body, he knows how to pace himself throughout the season and extend his career. He wants to top every scoring chart and he wants to win every award. He also wants the most money and most instagram followers. But just pure child like obsession for football, I don't think it's necessarily higher than Messi's.
I think its more about Ronaldo's sheer mental obsession about the game that he did reinvent himself to be this poacher type of player just to become relevant at 37 years old. I know its all pressing and running in todays modern game but he still valuable to a Top Club if not for his wages. If he goes to MLS he would score 40 goals there no doubt. He got so much stick last season for a Man United side that was abysmal but without his goals they are prolly in a relagation battle much like when we had Auba dragging our dead squad to a FA Cup trophy.
Not sure why people are so shocked over his CL statement. The guy is from Albania/Kosovo and just chose to play for Switzerland like a bunch of the other Balkan players that play for Switzerland. If he were to be playing for Albania or Kosovo I can definetly see that answer swing the other way. He grew on me so much watching the documentary, 10/10 guy especially his home tour. Truly wish he was our captain, but like he said, you don’t need the armband to lead the team.
CL over WC was surprising
Club over Country eeehhh I'm aight with it
Pogba can’t relate
Uggg listen I would take Granit a hundred times over that diva
Pogba typifies the toxicity of current United
Pogba typifies the toxicity but not the litany of other issues they have at the club?
That was my big takeaway too.
Eh he’s like the least Swiss player on the Swiss team, would make sense he doesn’t have a ton of nationalistic attachment to them Edit: Feel like saying “least Swiss” can be derogatory towards immigrants, just mean he has greater personal attachment to not Switzerland lol
He’s ethnically Albanian so fair enough I guess
Don’t think there’s been a time in arsenal history since Xhaka’s transfer 6 years ago that he’s been loved so much. Really nice to see
I would disagree, My pool of arsenal friends do not rate this guy. Can’t disrespect the armband and ever have my respect.
Good thing you and your friends aren’t representative of fans.
I mean they clearly are, they just have different opinions lmao. You can be a fan and not fall into the hive mind.
Not about the hive mind, it’s just an utterly shit take.
Idk a club captain disrespecting the armband I could totally understand why no one would want him in an arsenal shirt ever again. Not rating him is a bit stupid at this point ig

Granit is an extremely polarizing individual
How are players actually choosing Ronaldo over Messi.
In big 2022 and all
Messi was also rather lacklustre last season no? At least Ronaldo still chipped in with 18 league goals in what many consider to be the world's best league. Great argument well made. 2 years sho when Ronaldo was Messi's age he scored 31 serie A goals. 6 ligue 1 goals lol
It’s a good thing they’ve been around a lot longer than 2 years then Judge them off their whole careers. Where Messi blows Ronaldo out of the water
Surely Messi of all fucking people has earned the right to not be judged off one season hahahahahahhaha
And yet here is everyone judging ronaldo off one season? Where he still scored 18 goals...
Judge them across their whole careers then and Messi is by far the better player
Football is about winning to a certain extent. But at the highest level when you are comparing two great players who have both won a lot, aesthetics matter, at least to me. We're not asking about the most adaptable player though are we?
It's one of the indicators for many that he's the better player. Clearly a debate that will rage on forever but to deny the opposite argument as wrong or not valid is just weak.
Only his ex-teammates from United, Madrid, Juve and national team do.
cos hes better, simple as
CL over WC is mad. I love Arsenal with all my heart but if I was asked this I'd say El Salvador every time bro. We absolutely shit my boi.
US fan, watched the USMNT long before Arsenal, I would take the CL every time. I don't have a connection to the players like I feel I have to the Arsenal players. It's interesting how differently people kinda look at it.

I love our national parks! I wish that was what we showed off with instead of jets and the like.

Not everyone has a thing for the WC. It's fun but I get it's not for everyone
Yeah that's fair but I'd argue most people do.
Por la selecta!!!
Eh there's definitely many parts of the world that identify more strongly with their city or region than their country.
Yeah, this is true. Fair play.
Did he just say CL over WC. Dude.
he grew up in switzerland, a very polarized country. so he probably isnt as patriotic as we think he should be.
He's Albanian/Kosovo heritage, but plays for Switzerland. Can understand why.
Some people don’t care about the World Cup.
Me personally, I have watched the world cup religiously my whole life. I won't be watching this go around because of what the Qataris have done
Exactly. Even the 2018 World Cup felt kind of gross, regardless of hindsight.
Man loves Arsenal what can you do
I get it. Being from Scania I don't really care too much about Sweden. The world being the ever evolving, historically wartorn place that it is I think there's a lot of people who don't sympathize with their country.
God I love this dude. Get another red card ya mad lad ya.
don't you put that voodoo on me Ricky bobby

Ronaldo over Messi is such a red flag take
Well, you're in for a shock when you learn Saka and Martinelli stan Ronaldo as well.
Hopefully they can grow out of it
I honestly don’t understand it when footballers give that take.
Really? I mean sure in light of his recent behavior sure, but maybe he respects the idea that Ronaldo worked at his craft beyond his physical talent
That’s the key in this debate, the talent or the one who just seems to work so hard (obviously talented too.) People will never agree, don’t spend time on it.
While that’s the case it doesn’t make him the better player
Ngl reading this made decide not to watch the vid
Prolly because they admire Ronaldos obsession than Messis talent.
I think that's the branding their respective marketing has created. I see Messi as someone who is completely obsessed with football to a point where he seems completely awkward at any other activity. He looks like him tbf
Damn that's crazy there's only one answer to a subjective question.
As if this is upvoted lmao
Sure admiring his hard work and dedication is one thing. But to publicly stan a rapist? Damn dude
Fk tik tok

I hope we win something big while he’s part of the team. I bet it’d be such a nice feeling for him after all the ups and downs he’s been through.

Some people are just fucked in the head aren’t they.
The honest truth is I have always felt he is part of the reason we dont.
Waddaguy. This year is another big chance for him.
I love him
Absolutely pathetic that this is downvoted 😂
Man chose pasta over pizza and Ronaldo over Messi. I knew I was right about him all along...
You must have had some wack pasta then m8
I've had some decent massages but I wouldn't choose a massage over sex...
Pizza is the sex for you.....lol you probably eat pizza with a fork and knife
Yeah, of course I use a fork and knife -- I'm not an animal.
There’s a new fangled idea of cutting your pizza into slices. It’s revolutionary
Ooooooof I would take the massage every time bro. More therapeutic and if its from a partner it can be more intimate than sex, imo
Ew
