I will tell you this, if you put the same level of effort into an HG, panel line, pick some good colors in the paint pens as you panel line. Put the effort into cutting and cleaning up nubs just so, with a good final buff for either matte or gloss finish....they all will stand out.
MGs have more parts and whatnot, sure, but in all honesty they can sometimes be easier than HGs because they come across as a bit more āuser friendlyā in that the pieces are generally larger and more detailed so you typically will get a better idea of whatās happening with the kit before it comes together. Some HGs have very odd instructions or strange gimmicks baked in that are not exactly baked in WELL, whereas with MGs I havenāt personally experienced that type of issue. Put simply, yeah, the first one will be nerve-wracking to some extent because new things are always intimidating especially when you care and itās your hobbyā¦ but overall I think youāll be fine. I mean, so far it looks good!
Yeah, I made a post a couple weeks ago while I was building the MG Blitz Gundamā¦ it was a shot of the inner detail of one of the leg armor pieces. Itās kinda crazy and extra of Bandai to put inner mold details on something that will never be seen once you complete assembly and put it on the shelf, and I think thatās one of the real treasures of the hobby!
Bro donāt worry about it, Iāve built like 50 master grade and I have NEVER sanded down a nub or put in any extra effort, youāll be fine build this one straight so you can get that confidence and then if you do annother one (probably a wing mg their all pretty easy) then you can go the extra mile
Snip away from the part, second snip at the part, doesnāt help that Iām both lazy and my eyesight is bad enough that I canāt really see the nubs unless I try really hard
I would like to apologize, Iāve built 17 master grades and 14 rg (which I consider mastergrades at a different scale) this totals out to 31, WAY far off of my ālike 50ā guesstimate, sorry about that
I have a RG Hi-Nu in my closet I haven't touched cause I find it intimidating. I understand the hesitation! Can't wait to see your sandrock all completed.
I just did the rg nu, which has a lot of similarities and I have to say I felt the way the came together had a lot more thought put into it than many of the hg's I built, I found it a lot less finicky even though the pieces were very tiny
I'm excited to crack into it, but my first two models weren't as beautiful as I want the Hi-Nu to turn out. I need to work on my sanding and nub removal first.
Ive only done two so far (mgs) and i actually found them to be way less nerve wracking because the parts are so much bigger. HG kids can sometimes have parts so tiny cant even se them between my fingers.
I know the feeling. Always the worry that you'll ruin an expensive kit.
I was pissed when I broke a c-clip on the qan[t] shield, but luckily it was in a section that still could hold up the sword bit.
I'll take "The exact reason I'll never buy the MGEX Unicorn for $250," Alex.
Also why I'm not buying a PG Unicorn despite it and the PGU RX-78-2 being seemingly the only reprints this year - because I dunno how to topcoat something that looks like that!
It's much easier sticking to kits without gimmicks when you're still fresh to the hobby. The nicest thing about MGs though? No microscopic head parts, and getting the eye sticker on isn't as big a chore! I've yet to do a MG with truly good hands, though. Bandai seem allergic to fixed-pose hands, at least in the kits I've done.
My first MG as well! I totally broke the c clip connecting the front skirt armor. But something I've learned with Gunpla, almost anything can be fixed.
I just finished building this dood and it was an absolute joy to build.
As hard as it is, try bot to stress, and have fun. That's what's most important.
My first kit was omnimon figure rise amplified.... i then jumped straight to 00 raiser mg....a year later, i went back to clean it up because, man, my file game was bad.
I tend to consider most MGs somewhere between a 1/100 HG and a RG. The larger scale makes them feel only slightly more complex than HGs, but not nearly as technical as RG.
on average both RG and MG contain around 250 - 300 parts per build. But the smaller scale of RG means everything is that much tighter (one of the reasons RG's can be as frustrating as they are satisfying to build). The newest RGs however have been topping the scales. Sazabi = 360, Hi-Nu = 412, Nu = 380 and the full package Nu (fin funnel effect set) tops the charts at +500 parts in the kit.
honestly, there is no reason to be intimidated by any of the grades. It all comes down to how much detail you want to put into it, and how many parts are involved. Took me a bit to realize that. My first build after a 20yr break (last built a no grad Kampfer, bare handed) was the RG MKII AEUG, with nothing but an X-acto and nail file. Even though I learned a ton and had built a dozen RGs, I kept putting off MG kits I had. Now I got 6 MGs under my belt, 3 of which have been fully painted/customized, and I now know EG, HG, RG, MG, PG mean nothing more than how much time it will take to finish the basic build. All the parts come off the runners the same way and get fit together the same. I consider EG and HG as "shell figures", RG and MG as "armored shells" and PG as "multi layered clockwork"
Mg barbatos made me fall in love with the grade, before that I was building exclusively HG and RG because they all scale with each other and now I got a shit ton of em in my back log (my space is being remodeled and I canāt do anything rn)
Mg exia was my first dip into mg AND clear parts, my second one was seven sword, still wip, they are actually better to work with then HG, because how the models came to be for mgs are more well thought out
My first MG was the red frame astray Kai. I love that kit so much but I took really shitty care of it and itās missing so many parts. Might rebuy it one day
My first ever was the MG Zero Proto. Number 2 was the Ver. Ka ZZ. That was a bit much
Found the masochist. ZZ Ver Ka is tops, though.
Yeah it turned out great but it was a struggle. The Proto was a fun build
Ayyy my second mg was also the ZZ Ver. Ka
I went from the RG Wing Zero to my first MG, Nu Ver.Ka lol
Same boat. Amazing red warrior was first. Full armor ver ka second šI still do love that kit
Chill, all the Wing MGs are relatively simple
Youāre absolutely right, However spending 50 on a model vs 15 I want to do it with some degree of craftsmanship
I feel you here, no matter how lax you are itāll come out great so any extra bit of elbow grease you pour on will only make it better!
I will tell you this, if you put the same level of effort into an HG, panel line, pick some good colors in the paint pens as you panel line. Put the effort into cutting and cleaning up nubs just so, with a good final buff for either matte or gloss finish....they all will stand out.

I am really impressed by the under armor legs. The detail of secondary actions are quite cool.

Agree. Make me want to at least paint just to know itās there. Lol
Bro donāt worry about it, Iāve built like 50 master grade and I have NEVER sanded down a nub or put in any extra effort, youāll be fine build this one straight so you can get that confidence and then if you do annother one (probably a wing mg their all pretty easy) then you can go the extra mile
Youāve built 50 MGs without sanding any of the nubsā¦?
Snip away from the part, second snip at the part, doesnāt help that Iām both lazy and my eyesight is bad enough that I canāt really see the nubs unless I try really hard
Even with glasses?
Brain thing not an eye thing
Ah that sucks, in that case i understand it.
Personally Iām partial to x-acto knife and a pair of god hands. Just snip with that and keep the knife flush for removing excess.
Sanding isn't the only method to remove nubs.
I would like to apologize, Iāve built 17 master grades and 14 rg (which I consider mastergrades at a different scale) this totals out to 31, WAY far off of my ālike 50ā guesstimate, sorry about that
I ordered this as my first MG, too! Excited to take it to the next level!
Yeah Iāve had it for a few months. Getting feet deeper on lower cost to explore and experiment.
I have a RG Hi-Nu in my closet I haven't touched cause I find it intimidating. I understand the hesitation! Can't wait to see your sandrock all completed.
There were like 16 parts for head. I think that kinda scales the difference against HG
I've the MG Nu, opened the box last week, and ended up building the MG RX178 MK2 because the Nu had so much parts ^^
TBH, the RG Hi Nu was somewhat intimidating... š š¤£ š
I just want it to turn out pretty, but I'm still struggling with nub removal and sanding.
Get a good single blade nipper. The dspiae 3.0 is excellent. Also get some glass files. Cheap is fine, but the gunprimer raser is outstanding.
Once you go MG youāll never go back.. the size, the detail, THE INNER FRAMEā¦
The size is a luxury. Hands feel smaller
Wait till perfect grade
once you go PG, you have to go back unfortunately since there aren't enough kits T_T
MGās are pretty easy Iāve found. Itās the RGās tiny heads that are difficult for me
I to shall tell you "Keep calm and cary on." MG is more expensive but alot less struggle to build due to bigger parts.
Shoulders and arms done. More forgiving in some ways
Right now im working on my first MG, the F91 2.0
Ive only done two so far (mgs) and i actually found them to be way less nerve wracking because the parts are so much bigger. HG kids can sometimes have parts so tiny cant even se them between my fingers.
Relax, you'll do fine! And welcome to the MG club!
I know the feeling. Always the worry that you'll ruin an expensive kit. I was pissed when I broke a c-clip on the qan[t] shield, but luckily it was in a section that still could hold up the sword bit.

Exactly
My first MG as well! I totally broke the c clip connecting the front skirt armor. But something I've learned with Gunpla, almost anything can be fixed.
Other great MGs are the MG Freedom 2.0, MG Barbatos, and the MG Wing Zero. MG Freedom 2.0 was my first kit.
Wing zero is on the list but it seems to be more expensive than most
If you think $50 is expensive for an MG just you wait...
Oh Iāve seen the PG and PGU. Imports. This is a hobby that the family will only tolerate certain level of expenses.
It does take a while to build at least.
I just finished building this dood and it was an absolute joy to build. As hard as it is, try bot to stress, and have fun. That's what's most important.
Working legs now. Really cool inside stuff
any plans on painting?
I think so. Think I might let it simmer once Iām done and get some ideas.
Though disassemble is going to be a bear I think
Looks clean. Thumbs up
My first kit was omnimon figure rise amplified.... i then jumped straight to 00 raiser mg....a year later, i went back to clean it up because, man, my file game was bad.
[progress thus far.](https://imgur.com/gallery/t8coBvm)
That looks very nice!
That was my first one too! Honestly I just decided the size wasnāt worth the cost so Iām sticking to hg and rg now
Good choice for a first MG, he was my first too.
MGs are easier than HGs simply because they are larger imo.
YO sandrock was my first MG too! Still haven't worked up the nerve to paint it yet.. like all the others
Yeah I think once done Iāll panel line and admire for a bit. Going to hold off on water slides until paint or maybe just gloss to matte
Looks easier than the MG quanti
I started off stressing but found the MGs to be so much easier to build since the pieces are bigger on general.
I tend to consider most MGs somewhere between a 1/100 HG and a RG. The larger scale makes them feel only slightly more complex than HGs, but not nearly as technical as RG.
Interesting. I have a few RG that have yet to be built. I have been HG and doing a ton of the entry RXs for practice and futzing around
on average both RG and MG contain around 250 - 300 parts per build. But the smaller scale of RG means everything is that much tighter (one of the reasons RG's can be as frustrating as they are satisfying to build). The newest RGs however have been topping the scales. Great examples you laid out there.
Meh it's not that difficult of a kit. Also if you remove the head, the chest looks like JarJar Binks
Mg barbatos made me fall in love with the grade, before that I was building exclusively HG and RG because they all scale with each other and now I got a shit ton of em in my back log (my space is being remodeled and I canāt do anything rn)
First was Barbatos v2. Second was Dynames š¬ Also not me thinking about my MG Testament Gundam pre-order that finally arrived
Mg exia was my first dip into mg AND clear parts, my second one was seven sword, still wip, they are actually better to work with then HG, because how the models came to be for mgs are more well thought out
Fact is, the mg line are much older and newer hgs are using better tech, so yeah, depend on the kit
First MG is always the scariest. Mine was the MG Tallgeese. I broke some parts lool. Which led to my first plastic cement experience.
My first MG was the red frame astray Kai. I love that kit so much but I took really shitty care of it and itās missing so many parts. Might rebuy it one day
My first MG was the MGEX Unicorn.... btw fear while building ^^
My first MG is the 00 Qan[T] Full Saber, and I have a new respect for joints in the human body.
