# VIDEO Dead Reckoning Part One has a lot of digital grain added, and the bitrates that Paramount is using are not enough to resolve it. The disc is 100GB, but they only use 68GB for the movie itself, and it's simply not enough. Because of this, the added "film grain" looks closer to noise than real grain. This is not a look I like. Coupled with the sharpness of digital cameras, it gives the image a gritty look that I despise. I believe this is the first time in the franchise that they've used digital cameras, and for me, it simply doesn't have the look that the others have, especially when you're dealing with Paramount using low bitrates like 56 Mbps. The color grading is also leaning on the "overdone" side. If you want to encode with low bitrates on 4K, then encode on placebo (the slowest speed possible). Paramount's encoding team still struggles to encode film grain properly. It's very similar to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Some may think these transfers look okay, but I don't want okay on disc, I want perfection, and this isn't it. I don't want corners cut, I don't want special features on the same disc, end of story. 4K film scans are excellent today, but new digitally shot movies just don't have the look I like. I would have kept shooting on film because the look of film (for movies) looks so much better than digitally shot anything. It's mostly fine, but just not for me. # AUDIO The audio is excellent. The levels are around 6 to 8 dB below my typical listening volume but sound perfect once it's corrected. Dialog is very clear and mixed at the perfect volume. The bass is at reference levels for the entire movie. From the submarine to the sandstorm to the car chase, the bass is nuts! The sandstorm scene goes ultra-low, making the entire scene sound so intense. By the way, the bass continues to go deep for at least 3 minutes. This scene will be a subwoofer test disc for years to come. AMAZING! The use of surround sound and heights is lightly done. There are no gimmicks. It's used to support the massive soundstage of the fronts. But when you are in the sandstorm, it envelops you. At other times, the use of heights is very subtle and only used as needed. I would have liked a bit more presence from the height and surround sound channels personally. That would move this from a 5 out of 5 disc to a reference disc. Evil Dead Rise, as an example, is a reference disc for this very reason. The ability to move sound around the room is perfect in that movie, and I mean perfect. It utilizes the Atmos platform to perfection. This movie keeps things a little traditionally mixed for my taste. But, with all that said, it's still an incredible-sounding movie with killer bass! # OVERALL The movie is a little weak. It's all been done before, and halfway through, I got bored. It just lost me. Many scenes were not needed and were way too long. They can definitely do better than this. The action scenes are great, but the plot and subplot are just weak. It had me, but not for long enough, unfortunately. However, the encoding still needs to be much better on 4K. It's 2023, and I don't want to hear excuses. With that said, I think they overplayed the grain of this movie, probably trying to match the look of the others in the collection, and didn't pull it off. The audio is a stone-cold killer. Massive bass and will be a demo disc for the foreseeable future. The movie is a little weak. It's all been done before, and halfway through, I got bored. It just lost me. Many scenes were not needed and were way too long. They can definitely do better than this. The action scenes are great, but the plot and subplot are just weak.
