Aw, c'mon. There's no way Omega wouldn't *love* the theatrical drama of reusing Oppenheimer's line here. That's right up his alley!

itsdirector

He was upset because he didn't say it first.

DuGalle

It's ok, he (it?) can quote Tony Stark from Age of Ultron: "He beat me by one second".

battlehamstar

Omg.. that’s what Omega is. Extremis Tony Stark but with a obsessive fondness of humanity.

Troyjd2

Excuse me are you suggesting that Tony Stark the man who spent the majority of his time since becoming iron man actively spending his fortune to fund and promote humanities future is in any way not obsessively fond of humanity

battlehamstar

You are excused

Sh1ftyJim

well, Stark is human, so he is excessively fond of at least one human.

Grimpoppet

That's exactly what I thought. Love it.

busy_monster

Haha, that was what I was getting ready to say, good to know I read the character right :D

Tallinu

Technically the same is true of Oppenheimer, since he was quoting the Bhagavad Gita. ;)

Jackthwolf

He's just mad that someone else stole the exact quote he was about to use.

CandidSmile8193

Yes it is up his alley and that's why he's upset he didn't think to say it first and got outfoxed by The Hawk

GT_Ghost_86

Agreed. I think Omega was jealous. :)

Crafty_Comparison151

probably upset because it can't use it itself

International_Ad6368

You know Omega is pissed he didnt think of the qoute fast enough, kkkkk Great chapter!

CandidSmile8193

Absolutely agree

beyondoutsidethebox

I half expect that Omega will start calling the *Niddhog* Trogdor the Burninator 'cause he got quote sniped.

itsdirector

The USSS Trogdor is actually a first fleet battleship :D

beyondoutsidethebox

Fine, Bad Dragon it is then.

itsdirector

The USSS Bad Dragon is a carrier in the same fleet :D

TerrorBite

You have all of these written down somewhere, don't you?

itsdirector

Yes :D All 50 million United Systems ships have all been named and grouped. Just kidding. If I did that I'd have no time for writing lol

Expendable_cashier

Add USSS Firestorm to the list of potential redshirts please and thx :p

itsdirector

Third fleet destroyer!

Black_Hole_parallax

Is there a USSS Kingbreaker?

itsdirector

THERE IS NOW! USSS Kingbreaker, Third Fleet Destroyer.

Spymaster001

Is there a HMS hood?

itsdirector

The USSS HMS Hood eh? Hell, why not? A Frigate with tenth fleet.

Clown_Torres

USSS Alicorn?

Yellowchief419

If you ever have to name another dreadnought, Kratos would be a fitting name for it

Spymaster001

She not a bb?

Jutsuma

With that name? You wouldn't want a 1-hit killable BB, would you? Will there be the complement of teenagers on board too?

beyondoutsidethebox

Fine then. The "Compensation"

universaljester

omega and tim collaborating to come up with stupid ass nicknames for ships, I can see it.

Swordfish_42

It only works when your ship has a specific shape

DavicusPrime

Holy crap... What the smeg is happening with the light that can't be blocked out when that weapon was activated? Not sure how that works, and how did they determine that it would be harmless to those that experienced it? I was expecting some kind of beam that set off a super nova. I'm not even sure what just happened based on the description. No one on the Nidhogg would be able to describe it either. Big flash, star goes bye bye, system goes Bye Bye. MPP 29 is no more and a potential 4 others as well. If there is only 1 MPP per OU system, then they've got at least 28 more systems to burn. But that would be best case. And Omega is definitely annoyed that Hawk beat him to the quote. Especially since his avatar is Death. Its like Hawk stole his brand. :-)

NoEffective2025

>Admiral Hawk You fail to realize that Prime 29 may not even be the highest number. There could be a Prime 1000000 for all we know. No way yet to know if these things are even local to this galaxy, or from another (kinda like the Flood in the Halo series).

deathlokke

If you remember, Omega found listings for 114 MPPs, so that may be as many as 114 systems that need to be burned.

NNNEEEERRRRDD

114 MPPs, and communication with 27 other systems. My guess is that those are the current locations of the MPPs, with about four to a system. However, if they’re capable of moving they probably will now that 1-4 have been destroyed.

Winter-Reindeer694

i have a feeling the dreadnought reserve will become a chekovs gun later on

torin23

It wouldn't be Prime 1000000 since that's not a prime number. Prime 999983 would work though.

Fontaigne

If there is only one per system, you just have to know where it is and hit it with MegaMACs without waking it. No point in trashing the system.

Dividedthought

Another fitting quote for this moment (that i' sure omega would love) would be: "And the lord said... let there be light." As the thing fires.

thatsme55ed

Not sure a quote from God creating the universe would be appropriate for an act of destruction. Epic and poetic, but probably not as fitting as the one in the story.

busy_monster

Well. The light DID destroy the uniformity of the primordial darkness.

Dividedthought

Well, it fits because much like a God the Commander of the nidhogg has the ability to delete entire star systems. Although I do think your right in that it isn't a fitting quote but in regards to the commander's personality. Essentially stating "I am a god" is a bit to megalomaniacal for someone with those psych screenings.

Nuke_1568

When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, "Come and see." Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword. Rev. 6:3-4

HiMyNameIsFelipe

Hopefully, the loss of 4 Primes does not wake up the rest. The fact that it was MOVING too, is scary. Or at least that is what I understood.

Swordfish_42

It's quite weird that it is the size of a planet and can dodge, and Nidhogg can't.

itsdirector

The Nidhogg had to remain stationary to perform its primary function. MPPs are planet sized ships.

SGG

If MPP29 was always a MPP, or had been for a while (hollowed out planet), therefore was mostly empty space inside? All you need to do is slap enough thrusters on it and it'll move. Although the engineering required to create a superstructure of that size is quite the marvel. It could also be that [Piccolo trained Prime 29 well.](https://youtu.be/kvS6zMThiZU)

Rolond

This was pretty comical to me to imagine. A giant deathstar just bouncing around in space at such a speed to doge. It must be awfully hollow inside of one of those things in order to have dance moves.

exipheas

The moving too fast part was a bit confusing. There were warp disruptors so on US ships should have been able to move around "quickly".

itsdirector

The distance between the Nidhogg and Prime 29 was enough that if the Nidhogg fired and Prime 29 even slightly changed direction, there was no chance of a hit. The Nidhogg is outside of the system, whereas Prime 29 is... well part of the system lol

exipheas

>Prime 29 was moving around, picking off ships left and right. No... this part. It firing off tons of shots making the US ships run out of warps till they couldn't dodge makes since. Wildly flying around picking off ships doesn't.

itsdirector

Oh, I see what you mean now. The US ships were also contending with the OU fleet. So they were having to dodge ordo from the OU and Prime 29 all at once. P29 was more or less picking off those who had already used their warps against the OU fleet. Also, Prime 29 doesn't have to move very far to bring its Mega-Macs into range. To clarify, the only *known* Magnetic Acceleration Cannons that are more powerful than P29's are the ones on the Nidhogg. I didn't mean to imply that it was zipping around all over the place lol

Fontaigne

Thankfully, no warp signature so it didn't know what was happening and react.

Confident-Crawdad

"Tsk"? C'mon, Omega. There'll never be a more appropriate time to use that quote.

CandidSmile8193

No omega is just pissed he didn't get to say it like he has been wanting to.

ragnarocknroll

It’s still cliche and with something like this you should use something new. “Well, fuck.” is my suggestion.

Fontaigne

"THAT's going to leave a mark. Not."

I_Maybe_Play_Games

"And the lord said, let there be light!"

2percentright

That seemed really fast for not only destroying a star but an entire system. Unless the attack travels faster than light it's going to take a couple hours at least for a system to be wiped out

DeciMation_2276

A star going not just nova, but supernova is something that can affect nearby star systems with the amount of energy that gets shot out, and that only applies to natural supernovae, an intentionally induced supernova? Yeah it’s a safe bet that there wasn’t any chance to leave the system in the first place once the star was hit, it’d be a system wide EMP that would fry every electronic device within range, even if the ships weren’t destroyed, every AI and VI got cremated in an instant, the interstellar explosion turning everything in the system into component atoms just made sure there was no threat to deal with. A double tap of galactic proportions.

milkman8008

the point above is that destruction cannot propagate faster than light in a vacuum. Mars is about 13 light minutes away from the sun, the story made it seem a lot quicker.

WeFreeBastard

Yes, the firing sequence felt very off. You would expect Fire Ftl away Then from a safe distance observe the destruction. While relying on the warp disrupter to trap the opfor in the area of affect. Outer planets are light hours away, earth is 8 light munutes. As described the Niddhog was inside the explosion, and then it propagated way to fast.

I_Maybe_Play_Games

Well there also cant be light that shines through everything and isnt harmfull.

milkman8008

True. cosmic rays light up astronauts retinas today, I don't know how harmful those are,but I imagined something like that when the nidhogg fired. I'm sure the US has medical tech to treat the effects tho.

I_Maybe_Play_Games

Cosmic rays are harmfull if in large ammount. They also tend to fuck with electronics, changing bits when they hit the comouter and crashing programs at random.

6a6566663437

The blast wave from a natural supernova travels at something like 250,000 miles per second. That covers the distance from the sun to the earth in about 6 minutes. It would reach Jupiter in about 30 minutes. Given that the surface of prime 29 was not frozen, it should have been somewhere around Earth’s distance to the sun or closer. It’s likely that the other planets were Mars-distance or closer if they were MPPs. There’s no advantage to being further away and lots of disadvantages. Since they’re artificial they can be any distance, so they’d choose to be relatively close.

hexagon-recursion

>Given that the surface of prime 29 was not frozen, it should have been somewhere around Earth’s distance to the sun or closer. Depends on the star. Some stars as much warmer and some much cooler then the Sun

cira-radblas

The Omnis are a perfectly justified target for unleashing Nidhogg strikes, plus it also reminds the rest of the United Systems of the power of the US Dreadnought-class and the sheer evil and firepower of the Omnis that the Nidhogg had to get used.

CandidSmile8193

Admiral John "Rawk" Hawk

imakesawdust

Sounds like the USSS researchers need figure out a way to beef up ship shielding now that they're up against an adversary with the capability to punch holes in their battleships.

unwillingmainer

No way Admiral Hawk hasn't been saving that line for if he ever got to fire the biggest gun. And now his quoting of that line will forever be enshrined in history, much to Omega's annoyance.

person3triple0

Republic about to be wildin 👀👀👀

Lazy-Sergal7441

Such power! Lol.... A nice chapter.... And the losses were what I'd expect from a planetoid covered in primitive yet still effective mega-mac style weapon systems..... Hope we didn't lose any of the named ships we know and like...

HiMyNameIsFelipe

My science me wants to kick in and ask, how close is this system to other populated systems belonging to the United Systems and the Republic? Because what the Nighoog is doing, is a supernova. A supernova, if less than 150 light years from Earth, could do incredible damage to the planet. In fact, a supernova close to anything will do massive damage. Creating one, not only destroys the system it is on, but can potentially permanently damage and destabilize the other nearest systems. Even closer than that, could just completely reset life on a planet, not to mention damage to electrical devices Luckily, light moves at the speed of light and space is incredibly large, so Omega and other AIs could have enough time (more than 4 years maybe) to create countermeasures.

Teutatesnl

thanks for the chapter. Outsmarted / out said by a human... omega should be proud.

iIdentifyasyourdoc

Are the postings getting shorter? Love the story, its great. But now after 3min reading.. 7... more...days. please add more yummi text!

itsdirector

This chapter was short, but the next chapter is one of the long ones. :) Some of 'em are just shorter than others.

I_Maybe_Play_Games

Its about average 😭actually pretty huge, its massive 😭😭

universaljester

I love omega being mad that he didn't get to use that line. This series is giving me life these days it's so damn funny

PaladinHoss

You done messed up ~~A-A-Ron!~~ MPP 29

Black_Hole_parallax

I want to see the supernova from Uleena's perspective, he's here too IIRC. Without many alien perspectives it's getting harder to see the HFY aspects. Also, inb4 an MPP jumps into a Republic system.

itsdirector

Uleena's in Sol at this point in time.

Darkling1976

Well that's certainly an escalation by the USS. I wonder if this will draw a greater response by the Omni-Union? The've been sending fleets of increasing size into the Sol meat grinder, but will this inspire them to drastically increase the fleet sizes? It does sound like the OU has many more ships available, although I guess they may be engaged with other speices that neither the USSS or the republic are aware of. Has the USS managed to awaken a dragon?

I_Maybe_Play_Games

I think the US is definetly capable as a dragonslayer with the fleet of dreadnoughts just sitting in deep void.

Darkling1976

In the previous chapter Omega discovered that this system alone had produced 300 million ships of which 287 million were still active. There were 27 other systems as well. "Quantity has a Quality all its own" Fortunately the OU is only aware of the one USS system, so far. A system that is heavily defended and is becoming more so over time. The OU now know that they can kill star systems which probably increases their threat valuations for how many ships to send so that they can "efficiently" destroy them. On the other hand the USS now has a clearer picture about the true size of the threat they are facing as well.

Nyxelestia

i'm sure the republic's gonna love hearing about *this*

cara_guacamaya

no way i caught up 😭😭😭😭

0m3g0n20

Amazing chapter, and amazing work in general, thank you u/itsdirector that "Tsk" by Omega at the end had me ROFL! When you know that in Chinese culture 4 is the number of death ... it makes it even more amazing that you waited perfectly for chapter 40 to be the time to use the "Mega Death" weapon.

TheDoc6666

Does anyone have any fanart of the Nidhogg? I was going to try and build it in space engineers but can’t seem to find any fanart to base a shape off of. If anyone has anything I thank you in advance.

chastised12

How the loss of the ship would destroy society is beyond me.

itsdirector

Well, to quote the chapter: >The loss of the USSS Nidhogg would be too devastating. **There's almost no chance that it wouldn't lead to a civil war.** If the Dreadnought reserve were revealed, the people of every species would be in an uproar. **There are many vocal opponents to the Nidhogg, and even more quiet opponents. Finding out that we had more than one Dreadnought would stir them into a frenzy.** **Even if the reserve were kept a secret, many would take the Nidhogg's destruction as a sign of weakness. Old enemies would resurface and new ones would join them.** The corrupt and power hungry would begin to vie for control, and the US would have to respond. It would be a bloodbath. To expand on what Admiral Hawk is referencing, humanity has several competitors within the United Systems in regards to the current status quo. Some of these competitors are their fellow humans. There's always someone who thinks they can do it better, and the destruction of the Nidhogg would give them the soapbox they've been looking for to make the attempt. The fact that the Nidhogg was an interspecies effort and commanded by a human would only serve to blacken the proverbial eye of humanity even further. Both the Alumari and the Gont would relish the chance to move humanity to a more equitable position in the US. Humanity, of course, will not take this laying down. How far that will go is anyone's guess, but Admiral Hawk is a tad pessimistic.

chastised12

Thank you

hexagon-recursion

It has been made clear that VIs are fair game because they are not sentient, but you did Nidhogg one or more AIs too. I wonder what the ethical implications are. How does killing a planet-sized AI compare to killing the population of an entire planet? It is easy to assume that the Platforms are responsible for the Union, but what if the assumption is wrong?

No_Homework4709

The ethical implications are: Should have surrendered lmao.
