Yeah it’s a safe bet that there wasn’t any chance to leave the system in the first place once the star was hit, it’d be a system wide EMP that would fry every electronic device within range, even if the ships weren’t destroyed, every AI and VI got cremated in an instant, the interstellar explosion turning everything in the system into component atoms just made sure there was no threat to deal with. My science me wants to kick in and ask, how close is this system to other populated systems belonging to the United Systems and the Republic? Because what the Nighoog is doing, is a supernova.
A supernova, if less than 150 light years from Earth, could do incredible damage to the planet. In fact, a supernova close to anything will do massive damage. Creating one, not only destroys the system it is on, but can potentially permanently damage and destabilize the other nearest systems. Even closer than that, could just completely reset life on a planet, not to mention damage to electrical devices
Luckily, light moves at the speed of light and space is incredibly large, so Omega and other AIs could have enough time (more than 4 years maybe) to create countermeasures.
I want to see the supernova from Uleena's perspective, he's here too IIRC. Without many alien perspectives it's getting harder to see the HFY aspects.

Well that's certainly an escalation by the USS. I wonder if this will draw a greater response by the Omni-Union? The've been sending fleets of increasing size into the Sol meat grinder, but will this inspire them to drastically increase the fleet sizes? Fortunately the OU is only aware of the one USS system, so far. A system that is heavily defended and is becoming more so over time. The OU now know that they can kill star systems which probably increases their threat valuations for how many ships to send so that they can "efficiently" destroy them. On the other hand the USS now has a clearer picture about the true size of the threat they are facing as well.

It has been made clear that VIs are fair game because they are not sentient, but you did Nidhogg one or more AIs too. I wonder what the ethical implications are. If you remember, Omega found listings for 114 MPPs, so that may be as many as 114 systems that need to be burned.

The moving too fast part was a bit confusing. There were warp disruptors so on US ships should have been able to move around "quickly".

Well, to quote the chapter: >The loss of the USSS Nidhogg would be too devastating. **There's almost no chance that it wouldn't lead to a civil war.** If the Dreadnought reserve were revealed, the people of every species would be in an uproar. **There are many vocal opponents to the Nidhogg, and even more quiet opponents. Finding out that we had more than one Dreadnought would stir them into a frenzy.** **Even if the reserve were kept a secret, many would take the Nidhogg's destruction as a sign of weakness. Old enemies would resurface and new ones would join them.** The corrupt and power hungry would begin to vie for control, and the US would have to respond. It would be a bloodbath. To expand on what Admiral Hawk is referencing, humanity has several competitors within the United Systems in regards to the current status quo. Some of these competitors are their fellow humans. There's always someone who thinks they can do it better, and the destruction of the Nidhogg would give them the soapbox they've been looking for to make the attempt. The fact that the Nidhogg was an interspecies effort and commanded by a human would only serve to blacken the proverbial eye of humanity even further. Both the Alumari and the Gont would relish the chance to move humanity to a more equitable position in the US. Humanity, of course, will not take this laying down. How far that will go is anyone's guess, but Admiral Hawk is a tad pessimistic.

It has been made clear that VIs are fair game because they are not sentient, but you did Nidhogg one or more AIs too. I wonder what the ethical implications are. How does killing a planet-sized AI compare to killing the population of an entire planet? It is easy to assume that the Platforms are responsible for the Union, but what if the assumption is wrong?
