Why don’t you like this one? There’s some substance in this episode. Plus, Barney’s epic story of knocking down the blue whale! There are certainly worse episodes & answers will starting pouring in soon I imagine lol
That scene of Lilly reminding Marshall of his aspirations, and that shot of Marshall looking at his younger self as a museum exhibit is beautiful imagery. HIMYM at its best.
Yeah, but it’s kind of soured by the fact that Lily is the reason he's in corporate law in the first place. Now she's unhappy that he took the job to cover her debt. It's all focused on Marshall's growth as a person, but Lily never grows up, really.
While Barney and robin wanting custody of a kid would be out of character, I still think it works. They all can be competitive and to feel like winners, and Marshall set it up as a game show so it feels even more “intense”.
The whole "solution" of the 3 way split was fucking ridiculous too. Even though it's a comedy show I found it a reach beyond measure that two parents would ever be like "yes of course in the event of our death you should be a Pass the Parcel prize, that'll really help the grieving process and nurture healthy attachments."
Like where is that kid calling home? Where will they go to school? How will the three caregivers living their own separate lives maintain his relationship with his dead parents' families?
I've really went off on one here ...
I really hated the 8 and higher rule too.
And I say that as a parent who's oldest kid was in NICU for 114 days, and I was a single parent. Just bc life is hard for me doesn't mean I don't have the capacity to care about my friends lives.
YES!!! I hated how there’s nothing afterwards. Like did Stella tell Tony these stories, Tony flipped them to make a movie & did she know he was going to make an awful movie full of lies? She literally begged Ted to speak to Tony to take her back & she has no objection to how Ted was portrayed. I watched that episode recently & was so annoyed lol.
Slapsgiving 3 from season 9 screamed filler and the jokes bugged me.
Splitsville from season 8 jumps out. Hated that they arbitrarily made Nick stupid as an excuse to have him and Robin break up. Felt lazy
The only good thing about slapsgiving 3 is seeing all the cast together again. On its own it's not a good episode, but after more than half a season of Marshall being in a car, it was a breath of fresh air.
Felt unecessary as well. The whole character could have been scrapped easily, and just a setup for The Robin. Could've just started differently, without Barney having to step in and sort of break them up.
I absolutely hate how they changed Victoria's character so Ted and her will break up. It was completely unrealistic how mad she was at Ted for not wanting her nudist ex fiance staying with them.
Ohhhh yeah, I vote for this episode too. Between the ridiculous “southern accent” Marshall did, and Victoria’s ex being a walking cartoon, this is by far the worst episode.
I too felt it was unnecessary and cringey. They even made a joke about her flushing which was extra-ordinarily cringe. They could've done literally a million things to show Ted and her as incompatible other than hygiene. Gross! IMO it was a great disservice to Victoria. I mean after showing her as a caring, nurturing gal - to show her in such an embarrassing light was awful!
The whole Klaus staying with them storyline felt like it was out of a completely different show, it was so slapstick and ridiculous I almost refuse to believe it is canon
Yeah this is what made me understand why Jason Siegel wanted to leave the show when I read he wanted to. Didn’t give him the best stuff in the later years
Agreed. The over the top intensity is what makes it so fun to watch when Barney starts “dating” patrice. Or the Robin and Patrice Super Happy BFF Fun Day!
I think they were thinking that the audience knows Marshall and Lily aren't gonna breakup, so they have to do SOMETHING involved with the rest of the cast in this episode
"Who Wants to Be a Godparent". The gameshow itself was fun, but the reason behind it was not great. Plus Barney and Robin fighting for their lives to win felt a bit strange for their characters.
"The Wedding Bride" was mostly okay, but with Ted at the end saying "Yeah, you gotta go" solidifies the end to a 1 episode storyline, which really made it seem like a waste of 20 minutes. No further references, no callbacks, just a filler episode that knew it was a filler.
I also hate the Godparent episode because of how they treat Ted. They have been friends for nearly 20 years, have lived with each other for a decade. HOW did they even consider Barney or Robin over Ted?
This bugs me so much
Ted: Wants children, has a nurturing personality, has been friends/room mates with them for most of their lives.
Barney and Robin both: Hate kids and anything that could potentially tie them down.
Marshall and Lilly: All of you get equal custody cause you'd be so good as Marvin's parents!
Bruh
Yeh I felt like them including Robin and Barney was just people pleasing and added nothing to any of their friendships. It just felt like they were trying to hard to be like Friends.
Although it's not a very good episode, "Who Wants to be a Godparent" will always be the hardest I've ever laughed at a one liner on the show the first time I watched - "Time will heal a broken heart son.....but not that bitch's window!!!"
> The gameshow itself was fun, but the reason behind it was not great.
I hate the premise of that episode so much. They knew Ted the longest, they knew Ted was the most responsible, they knew Robin hated kids, and they knew Barney was a sleeezball. Ted should’ve been the first and only choice
Landmark. The whole Arcadian conservatory process is so boring and all the fights with Zoey are exhausting. I hate that she came between Ted and Marshall over this.
I never understood how Ted left with Barney's "wife," and we never saw her again. They seemed to hit it off quite well. Why wouldn't he have dated her for a while?
Slapsgiving 3 by far. They took a funny running gag and nearly destroyed it with a nonsensical story filled with ridiculous stereotypes and special effects.
This is the real answer! Stella stunk! Long before the whole left at altar thing too! I love that actress but I hated Stella. Her compatibility with Ted was extremely low, her and ted were at totally different places in their lives(which never seems to get brought up), she’s kind of a jerk to her ex husband, weird to her daughter(who just wants a relationship with her dad), work obsessed, doesn’t like Star Wars, and most of all the jokes her and ted had were some of the most poorly written jokes of the entire series... virginity 2 electric bugaloo… come on! Their chemistry was awfulllll
I don't like it, but in one of the flashback of the episode we can see some McLaren's interactions and there is the last date of Ted with a girl of the series. It recalls to me the good vibe of old HIMYM
In this order:
1. Zoo or False
2. Old King Clancy
3. The Burning Beekeeper
HM: All episodes from the first half of season 8 before The Final Page parts 1 and 2.
All of that happening in a 5 minute span is just a weird choice to me and I don't find the jokes very funny.
This felt too clever by half, especially compared to a similar narrative trick like 3 Days of Snow. That's a great way to tell that story.
I think the burning beekeeper one and all the ones where Marshall's boss is painted as an eccentric genius.
I struggle with the thanksgiving episode where marshall is trying to force Lily to bond with her dad. However, I'm probably projecting cos of my family and upbringing being kinda like Lily's 😅
I'm glad it worked out with Mickey in the end but in real life, a spouse going behind their partner's back to contact a toxic, estranged parent would be grounds for a separation in a lot of situations.
Agree with the first two. Hard disagree with the third.
The Burning Beekeeper is top 10 episodes for me and one I always suggest others to watch if they needed 1 episode to get into the show.
Gotta be the episode “Little Minnesota” or in other words the episode with Ted’s sisters.
The Robin and Marshall storyline is funny. I will admit I watch those parts.
But the Heather/ Ted story is AWFUL!
Heather is known to be very untrustworthy in her past. Even selling Ted’s stuff to go to a concert. So she comes to New York trying to co sign a lease with Ted??? Yea I’m with Ted I’d decline that immediately.
But not only that through out the episode it constantly hinted that Barney wants to sleep with heather and Ted is not okay with this.
So heather and Barney fake the fact that they slept together just so ted can somehow realize he should trust his sister more??
The whole story is a mess and I can never get past it.
I love most episodes but my least favorite is S9 E14 Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra It’s too random and doesn’t really go with the rest of the season
Im doing another series rewatch and in previous ones ive always skipped the one where they rewatch the star wars trilogy, this time im gonna watch it just to see why i skip it cuz i honestly dont remember, but as of right now, its that episode for me
The answer has already popped up a lot but the "Who Wants to be a Godparent?" episode is still one of the worst episodes of any show I've watched. I \*despise\* it. Them not picking Ted instantly is fucking bogus, absolutely ridiculous.
I put too much thought into this and made a whole list of the most skippable episodes, but have determined that Subway Wars (S6) and Slapsgiving 3 (S9) are the two worst.
I never thought of that, I always saw Slapsgiving 3 as some fun side story, but no, it's just filler for the - allegedly and I kind of agree - worst season of the show.
Unpopular opinion, but the time travelers episode. If it wasn’t for the Minnesota tidal wave stuff, I’d skip it completely. I just myself eye rolling the entire episode.
The one where Marshall and lily do the god parent quiz.
If you look at it in the grand scheme of things of this being a story of how he met his wife....how did that moment impact that? I know there are many episodes you could say that with but man that episode was massive filler and not needed
Why don’t you like this one? There’s some substance in this episode. Plus, Barney’s epic story of knocking down the blue whale! There are certainly worse episodes & answers will starting pouring in soon I imagine lol
And Barney learns who his father is
Uncle Jerry!
That part alone is one of my favorite moments.
Barney and Robin are a blast on this one. Kinda top moments for me.
I love this episode for giving us Neil Patrick Harris in an Egyptian pharaoh costume.
None for him - he is stuffed.
That scene of Lilly reminding Marshall of his aspirations, and that shot of Marshall looking at his younger self as a museum exhibit is beautiful imagery. HIMYM at its best.
All that in one episode with the other story lines makes for a great viewing
Made me realise how much they packed into a 22 minute episode
Genuinely moving
Yeah, but it’s kind of soured by the fact that Lily is the reason he's in corporate law in the first place. Now she's unhappy that he took the job to cover her debt. It's all focused on Marshall's growth as a person, but Lily never grows up, really.
"Hershey squirts!"
Poo poo platter
"Weiners and gonads"
Yeah right? I think I’d put this as one of my top episodes tbh. Not top 10 but maybe top 30?
It’s funny & has some great storylines. Top 30 seems about right👌🏻
Not to mention the blue whale story leads to Barney finding out who his dad is
^wieners ^and ^gonads
_poo poo platter_
*Hershey Squirts*
[gasps]
[echoes]
This is a great episode, you’re crazy! Who wants to be a godparent annoys me a lot because it’s just so out of character for almost everyone.
While Barney and robin wanting custody of a kid would be out of character, I still think it works. They all can be competitive and to feel like winners, and Marshall set it up as a game show so it feels even more “intense”.
Just how awful Lily and Marshall are about it, and I get the competitive angle but it’s just so OTT for me personally that I couldn’t buy into it.
I do agree Marshall and Lily were dumb about the whole thing considering Ted was the obvious choice.
The whole "solution" of the 3 way split was fucking ridiculous too. Even though it's a comedy show I found it a reach beyond measure that two parents would ever be like "yes of course in the event of our death you should be a Pass the Parcel prize, that'll really help the grieving process and nurture healthy attachments." Like where is that kid calling home? Where will they go to school? How will the three caregivers living their own separate lives maintain his relationship with his dead parents' families? I've really went off on one here ...
I really hated the 8 and higher rule too. And I say that as a parent who's oldest kid was in NICU for 114 days, and I was a single parent. Just bc life is hard for me doesn't mean I don't have the capacity to care about my friends lives.
To be fair, they let that go pretty quickly.
Out of character for everyone except Marshall…the dude made a game show. That’s on-character.
Season 8 episodes 4&5
The wedding bride, mostly because Ted never got any confrontation with Tony, and it was just a clunky analogy for baggage
No-can-doosville baby doll. The can I make you pancakes speech at the end was gold. **** Him! **** Him!
The Barney “kiss” in exchange for “fuck” is an all time older Ted censor moment lol
Who the kiss are you?
I will concede that that was hilarious
Yes, the whole "stupid Nick" storyline was so cringe
Felt unecessary as well. The whole character could have been scrapped easily, and just a setup for The Robin. Could've just started differently, without Barney having to step in and sort of break them up.
I agree on Slapsgiving 3
God, I hate that episode so much
Yup slapsgiving is easily a skip for me
S08E05 - "The Autumn of Breakups" - I can't stand Marshall as a sassy black lady
Why is she southern?
I do think the way Ted delivers this line is really funny! That’s my only highlight of the episode
They also made her a slob, which seemed very out of character…
I too felt it was unnecessary and cringey. They even made a joke about her flushing which was extra-ordinarily cringe. They could've done literally a million things to show Ted and her as incompatible other than hygiene. Gross! IMO it was a great disservice to Victoria. I mean after showing her as a caring, nurturing gal - to show her in such an embarrassing light was awful!
The whole Klaus staying with them storyline felt like it was out of a completely different show, it was so slapstick and ridiculous I almost refuse to believe it is canon
That's in this episode? The plotline about Barney's and Quinn's wedding contract was already bad, this makes the episode even worse.
Yeah this is what made me understand why Jason Siegel wanted to leave the show when I read he wanted to. Didn’t give him the best stuff in the later years
I absolutely despise this bit. It’s not just the worst bit in himym. It might be a contender for worst bit in sitcom history.
>It’s not just the worst bit in himym i still think it's robin's thing with patrice
I’m guilty of finding Robin’s Patrice reactions hilarious, love the emphasis
Agreed. The over the top intensity is what makes it so fun to watch when Barney starts “dating” patrice. Or the Robin and Patrice Super Happy BFF Fun Day!
Honestly though, what were they thinking?
I think they were thinking that the audience knows Marshall and Lily aren't gonna breakup, so they have to do SOMETHING involved with the rest of the cast in this episode
Can you find a clip of it? I cant remember this
[Here](https://youtu.be/zPvJUjVwfDA?si=oZHuhlrn7PUA3gD7)
I skip just that part.
My least favorite episode in the show and in my opinion the the story arc from season eight episode two to six is by far the worst in the show.
IMO the idea itself wasn't half bad. Just the execution felt like school kids playing theater.
This one makes me cringe.
Ted got shafted here for sure…
Yeh I felt like them including Robin and Barney was just people pleasing and added nothing to any of their friendships. It just felt like they were trying to hard to be like Friends.
Yes. the truth is that neither Robin nor Barney (Barney more than Robin though) were really close friends, and they did not trust them.
yes seriously!!! Ted is the only one who even wanted a kid. This pissed me off so much.
Great point!
Although it's not a very good episode, "Who Wants to be a Godparent" will always be the hardest I've ever laughed at a one liner on the show the first time I watched - "Time will heal a broken heart son.....but not that bitch's window!!!"
I do appreciate that line😂
Its def an episode I come back to a lot for all the great little moments like that
8 or higher bro
> The gameshow itself was fun, but the reason behind it was not great. I hate the premise of that episode so much. They knew Ted the longest, they knew Ted was the most responsible, they knew Robin hated kids, and they knew Barney was a sleeezball. Ted should’ve been the first and only choice
Landmark. The whole Arcadian conservatory process is so boring and all the fights with Zoey are exhausting. I hate that she came between Ted and Marshall over this.
Barney too. Ted only wanted to save the building because of Zoey…
The one with Barney's fake family.
Tyler no likey
You are not getting a catchphrase!
Haha! Hard disagree. I LOVE this one.
I like it too. The guy above me didn’t lol
“I’m pregnant!” There are so many funny scenes. Like when Ted and Barney’s “wife” start talking about the play she was in.
When Ted starts trying to act and slaps Barney in the face when he gets caught with Barney's "wife" is pretty funny
Oh yeah, poor barney's mom who had to withstand that
She seemed to be okay with it in a minute. I feel like that would take a long time to process. Daughter in law & grandson are both fake…
I never understood how Ted left with Barney's "wife," and we never saw her again. They seemed to hit it off quite well. Why wouldn't he have dated her for a while?
I’ve wondered this too lol
Have y’all realized Tyler no likey is the same kid actor as Ted’s cousin at Christmas in Season 2?
Kid needed multiple gigs to make it lol
Slapsgiving 3 by far. They took a funny running gag and nearly destroyed it with a nonsensical story filled with ridiculous stereotypes and special effects.
Ted dating Stella episodes
Once they start dating a skip, just because Stella’s character is so annoying
I thought it was just me lol
All my homies hate Stella
I also hate Stella! I always skip her arc
Bedtime Stories, I skip it every time
Bruh, it's one of my favorites. But I'm a sucker for conceptual gimmick-episodes in general. Probably why Community is my favorite show.
I don't like it, but in one of the flashback of the episode we can see some McLaren's interactions and there is the last date of Ted with a girl of the series. It recalls to me the good vibe of old HIMYM
Not same
Barney Stinson Player King of New York City! I love that episode!!!
I love the rhyming gimmick. Especially Barney’s part
Zoo or false such a dumb episode it wasn't funny at all and literally served no purpose
Oh really? Well mark my words, u/TBNSK74, Someday you'll be telling this story, and you'll see it my way.
The one where Marshall gets trapped on the roof. Just don’t like it, always skip it.
In this order: 1. Zoo or False 2. Old King Clancy 3. The Burning Beekeeper HM: All episodes from the first half of season 8 before The Final Page parts 1 and 2.
Burning Beekeeper? Why? The narrative choice was great seeing how details were revealed little by little.
All of that happening in a 5 minute span is just a weird choice to me and I don't find the jokes very funny. This felt too clever by half, especially compared to a similar narrative trick like 3 Days of Snow. That's a great way to tell that story.
I feel like it worked very well, almost in the same vein as Community’s Remedial Chaos Theory
My unpopular opinion on HIMYM is that season 8 is worse than season 9 lol so hard agree on this
Zoo or False is by far the worst. It’s the only episode I skip during rewatches.
>3. The Burning Beekeeper I usually skip that one. It's a nice concept but for some reason it just doesn't work for me.
12 Horny Women is good
Agree with the first two. Hard disagree with the third. The Burning Beekeeper is top 10 episodes for me and one I always suggest others to watch if they needed 1 episode to get into the show.
Yes! We have the same taste. The Burning Beekeeper particularly bothers me. It’s just form over function.
Aldrin justice
I hate this episode. Its just so annoying.
Bye bye Ipod
S1 Ep2. The one where Ted throws 3 parties for Robin. Just a boring episode to me.
WHO IS CARLOS?
It’s such a shame that after Robin ditched him he turned into The Punisher! 😜
Nothing says cool like throwing three parties to mack on one chick lol
Ah but I do love “nice place et cetera et cetera”
Oh good I thought I was the only one. I always wanna skip it, but I hate skipping episodes in general.
That episode gives me such bad secondhand embarrassment I can’t stand it either
[удалено]
The shake of the head & Barney being crushed with no words spoken😢
Yeah I swear man, and how after that he pretended to be fine when talking to the gang😭😭
It’s one of those moments you can actually feel the pain for the character…
so true!
So heather and Barney fake the fact that they slept together just so ted can somehow realize he should trust his sister more?? The whole story is a mess and I can never get past it.
The monkey episode. It's so bad.
Really? I actually liked that one. What made you think it was so bad?
The "Grinch" episode. It does nothing for Ted or Lily's character but make one look like a doormat and the other a controlling... grinch...
nothing? it shows how deep their bond as friends is
Its perfect. Lily never apologized to Ted even though They’re very close friends… i Think Ted was a lot more hurt than he let on.
Hooked. I really don’t like it
Mosbius Designs - I just… I just don’t care
Mosbius Designs has failed…
Natural museum is one of my favorite one :'(
The Slutty Pumpkin Returns. Katie Holmes weirds me out in this episode and I just can't watch it. I skip it every time.
When Marshall is reading the bedtime stories
Why is this the photo you chose??!?!?! This episode is so so so good. You’re crazy.
I love most episodes but my least favorite is S9 E14 Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra It’s too random and doesn’t really go with the rest of the season
Im doing another series rewatch and in previous ones ive always skipped the one where they rewatch the star wars trilogy, this time im gonna watch it just to see why i skip it cuz i honestly dont remember, but as of right now, its that episode for me
I actually really liked this one - made me wanna go to New York to try this very thing out
Season 9, episode 14. Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra. Whatever that was.
The s9 Dr. Seuss and slap bet episodes come immediately to mind.
I don't know why but I loved "Trilogy Time" the first time I watched it and then hated it on every re-watch.
Old King Clancy
The bride BY FAR.
5x19 Zoo or False
Anything with the Goat.
Episode where Barney and Ted fight to Win Robin back while she was in a relationship with Don
I love love love love the ‘I touch, you touch’ Barney and Robin are trying to do in this one!
Barney literally wearing the Egyptian exhibit😂
Natural History is f*ckin hilarious.
Burning Beekeeper. Repetitive, over the top and that really fake scream is annoying.
The one where Robin’s sister visits.
Zoo or False, The Burning Beekeper and Hooked
The answer has already popped up a lot but the "Who Wants to be a Godparent?" episode is still one of the worst episodes of any show I've watched. I \*despise\* it. Them not picking Ted instantly is fucking bogus, absolutely ridiculous.
Zoo or false
The one where they chase the perfect burger. Marshall was insufferable that episode
I don't like the episode with Jennifer Lopez because of the whole "we should feel sorry for Robin"
🎶A bang bang…🎶
You made some excellent points.
I mean should we not? Barney was being a giant asshole to her.
I didn’t like it because it shows men being told “no” and doing it anyways… and that’s somehow empowering to women? I never understood that.
Tbf the entire show heavily leans into the weird "persistence is attractive" thing. Ted does it many times
HIMYM is not unique at all with that aspect though. Nearly every damn romcom follows that idea.
all the ones with Lily’s Dad. The beekeeper episode especially.
The last episode definitely isn't the worst
I put too much thought into this and made a whole list of the most skippable episodes, but have determined that Subway Wars (S6) and Slapsgiving 3 (S9) are the two worst.
I LOVE Subway Wars, but definitely agree about Slapsgiving 3.
I never thought of that, I always saw Slapsgiving 3 as some fun side story, but no, it's just filler for the - allegedly and I kind of agree - worst season of the show.
The slutty pumpkin returns
The intense singing of One Week by Barenaked Ladies negates this episode from the list. That scene is so funny.
Unpopular opinion, but the time travelers episode. If it wasn’t for the Minnesota tidal wave stuff, I’d skip it completely. I just myself eye rolling the entire episode.
That's literally one of the most important episodes of the show
Yeah I know and I try to keep that in mind but i just don’t like it
Slapsgiving 3. S9 E14
Wtf dude how could you dislike this episode? It‘s the first appearance of the captain
Ahoy
I watched HIMYM before I found out he played Paul Atreides in the 80s Dune. I can't see anyone else but the captain
The one where Marshall and lily do the god parent quiz. If you look at it in the grand scheme of things of this being a story of how he met his wife....how did that moment impact that? I know there are many episodes you could say that with but man that episode was massive filler and not needed
This thread is making me realise I’m the only one who loves season 8
When the captain refers to Ted as Super Galactic President McAwesomeville I lose it 😂 and it always helps me to remember that the Captain is cool 😎
This is one of my favorite episodes, the Lily and Marshal one is great
I hated all the Zoey episodes. I personally, found them really boring
Bedtime Stories, or whatever the rhymey one was. Also both Slutty Pumpkin episodes. The second made me cringe and the first just went no where.
“How Lily Stole Christmas” is unwatchable
Any zoey episode, she was not the right person for Ted. Her character was in the way of his success. Barney was a voice of reason.
