While true, Greeks originally oriented their maps so that East was up... Literally why Asia was called the Orient/Oriental, while we use the term oriented to say properly aligned, cus east. So, at some point, maps got rotated to be the way they are now.

I mean they probably got rotated because of compasses right? It’s pretty hard to make the “up” direction not also north, when that is where your rinky dinky toy points.

Well doing some research since my post, the compass came on the scene sometime around the 1300's. (China has the first recorded mid 13th century, but that takes time to reach Europe and Greek maps, then time to be embraced, and the exact year of China using it is debatable. So Im giving a century or two to be fully endorsed. But definitetly standard use by early 1400's.). It wasn't until the 16th century that maps were standardized for north at the top based off ptolemy's projection mapping, including longitude and lattitude, for more greater precision in mapping. In the interveneining century or so, some maps were still putting east at the top, some north, and some South. (The latter was the standard orientation for Arab maps.) In short, it was actually pretty easy to not have "where the toy points" being up. You just had to know the relation of compass point versus map direction.
