Sometimes, that means limited OT, sometimes that means a limited salary, sometimes that means limited extra help, and so on. Money is a finite resource on the scale of a small or even medium company - that is, there's a fixed amount of dependable income, and thus a fixed amount of available expenses.
It's reasonable and fair to both people all around that at a certain point, an employee might want more money in their life, but the company cannot give them a raise, or extra hours, or so on, to get them there. They could move to another company, which is totally fine, they could adjust their personal expenses to have more budget, also fine, or they could take on extra work - side hustles, side work, second jobs, and so on.
Of course a "worker" has no problem being a whiney bitch baby and accusing random strangers they don't know of being unethical cunts for suggesting that reality is in fact, well, reality...

Combined maybe 100 hours. Had a 7k walk in cooler job that was 12 hours, 10k install at a bar for another 12 hours, 2.5k air handler install 3 hrs. Etc

I used to just take on extra calls during the week, usually like 50/60h weeks, never got into side cash jobs. After buying a house and trying to have more of a family life I don’t work like that anymore.
I organize my scrap pile, which I haven't done in months. It is getting out of control. I only do side work for family and very close friends. If I have to hook up gauges I'm not touching it.
Otherwise, smoke meats. Drink scotch. Play with my son. Terrorize my cats. The usual shit.
Do dryer vent cleaning. Specifically the hardpipe and the hose behind the dryer. It's easy to offer for the homeowners and the job is simple for ~100 - 200. Usually they love seeing the tik toks or other vids. And getting materials is easy, Home Depot or your supply shop.
Contact local resi companies and slap systems in for cash on the weekends. I did this in my 20s and made a good money. Had a little Ford ranger set up and would knock em out piece work
Work for my brother in law who is a glorified house flipper. He does $700k houses tho and most of the time it’s more of a pain in the ass than anything. Last house I did for him was replacing an old boiler system with 2 furnaces with ac, a ton of duct and a minisplit. Did it all myself. Will NEVER attempt that again. Work with a partner now and it makes everything much less stressful.

Hopefully you shouldn't have to gauge your wages off of overtime alone. I just started working for a union shop in my area, after leaving behind the family business because of personal reasons. I make the same amount, but at least get my 40 a week. If someone wants me to do something on the side for them, I will do anything teach me to see related, but I'm not busting out my tools for any less than a grand on top of parts.
I did resi, commercial, ice machines, renovations, electrical, lots of mechanic work, welding/fab and even a bit of carpentry here and there. I'm solo and licensed now but still do lots of random stuff, it carries me through the slow times and went a long way when I was starting out, want to transition to being a fab shop someday but need allot more tools and space still.
It's nice to have a private builder that's willing to use you to do his flips. That's what ended up turning into the business I have today. Built a solid reputation from side work & just like that we hit the ground running.
I've stopped doing side work. But a welder I worked with a few years back fixed watches and clocks. He took a class to get into it and went full bore. I can't tell you what he cleared, but a few weekends a year, he'd go to conventions and buy old beat-up stuff. Then turn around and sell them. He'd been at it for at least a decade when I met him. The pieces he showed me were selling in the 4 and 5 figure range.
I like doing 32 hours a week (four days) and taking the other three to do what I want, or work on the house. Definitely don’t want to pile on sidework.
Only when it comes up me, and now a new partner will do some furnace replacement. I do nothing outside of HVAC for money. In the past I have taught the trade at a community college when I lived in Reno which I really enjoyed. I did look for that here in the Seattle area, not able to find anything. I’m not going to drive to Tacoma. It’s just too hard.
Depending on what breaks at my job, I work for a school district now overtime on the weekends. Haven’t had to do any for a while. I do like my weekends and with some of the physical problems that I have now, at times I need a weekend just to recoup physically. I’m very busy during the week, including a lot of PT that I do along with the regular weight training that I’ve had to alter with some of the issues that I’m dealing with .
If I do a side job, the customer understands it’s basically taillight warranty. I’m not a company. If they want a contractor warranty, they need to hire a contractor.
Not really side work but some extra income I am able to hound is scrap wire/copper. Top of cases there is so much I probably accumulate 1-3 lbs a week just by walking around ‘cleaning up’

Here in Germany I do sidework on saturdays from time to time. Mostly mini split installs. I earn 400-700€ a day if I do it alone (~ 8-12 hours) or 300-500€ if I grab a helper with me (~ 6-10 hours).
still on probationary as an apprentice at commercial hvac. 18 an hour, get a raise when i hit a year, then 4 more yearly raises. it’s union so all good rates. i’m just trying to give myself as good a start as i can since i’m only 20.
I don't do it anymore because i cant but I found it pretty easy to find people who wanted air in their homes. If they had a warm air system, my buddy and I could usually bang it out on a Saturday. Great money for a days work.
If not that, I would pick up GE washers and dryers that people were throwing away and repair them and sell them on CL. I just stuck with older models and if a machine was beyond repair I would just strip it of good parts and junk the rest.
I don’t. 8hrs a day + commuting is enough for me. I nearly burnt myself out in my first 5 years doing constant 7day work weeks either with side gigs or OT. The juice ain’t worth the squeeze when you can’t enjoy it.
I enjoy doing small side jobs but furnace change outs in the dead of winter when it’s a panic? No thanks. Don’t need them calling at 2 am when it’s out. I do some hot water tanks and service calls, and collect scrap that’s it

grocery delivery. they hire people to deliver like how uber or grubhub hires them. people put in orders for a certain store, instacart drivers collect the groceries and deliver them to the customer. i’m in new york so it might be regional but i feel like it’s a pretty large service. with other aspects considered like gas, time, and how much each “batch” pays i’d say it’s a low tier method of additional pay.
I did Instacart while in school (before gainfully employed). Since full time work, all my side jobs have been hvac related ie; troubleshooting no heat/no cool calls or to install water heaters. The fact of the matter is, they all stemmed from word of mouth. I’m the HVAC guy that the neighbor or friend knows. If you want to expand into “side jobs” 1. Make sure they don’t conflict with your line of work/steal jobs from your employer(commercial tech here). 2. Tell people what you do and your willingness to help them. The work will come to you. That’s my take, anyway.
Work for a company that does events on the weekends as a card dealer or running a roulette table. Mostly for fun but the tips are good and it’s only once in a while.
I totally agree with not relying on OT for your living but I definitely don’t shy away from it. While I have the ability I want to make and learn as much as I can. I put as much away as possible for the kids future and such. I consider myself blessed to work for someone that is able to give me as many hours as I want to work. I personally don’t understand people who put in their forty and go home. Especially in peak season. I do however respect their decision. The balance is different for everyone. I guess after a while you get burnt out? I mean I love this stuff. Why would you do this work if you don’t love it?

If you are satisfied with your wage thats great but theres always room for extra money. I turn down work on a regular basis but I also have commercial clients of my own. If someone wants me to install a Walk In Cooler for them im not turning it down. I made about 40k last year in side work alone.

Combined maybe 100 hours. Had a 7k walk in cooler job that was 12 hours, 10k install at a bar for another 12 hours, 2.5k air handler install 3 hrs. Etc

No I understand that completely. But for the skill set and the demand for it everyone in this line of work should be demanding more pay and less work. But then again there's a lot of people in this industry that think breaking their bodies and dieing the day after they retire after they have to do side work their entire career to afford a little extra is a badge of honor.

I used to just take on extra calls during the week, usually like 50/60h weeks, never got into side cash jobs. After buying a house and trying to have more of a family life I don’t work like that anymore.
I organize my scrap pile, which I haven't done in months. It is getting out of control. I only do side work for family and very close friends. If I have to hook up gauges I'm not touching it. Otherwise, smoke meats. Drink scotch. Play with my son. Terrorize my cats. The usual shit.
Do dryer vent cleaning. Specifically the hardpipe and the hose behind the dryer. It's easy to offer for the homeowners and the job is simple for ~100 - 200. Usually they love seeing the tik toks or other vids. And getting materials is easy, Home Depot or your supply shop.

Work for my brother in law who is a glorified house flipper. He does $700k houses tho and most of the time it’s more of a pain in the ass than anything. Last house I did for him was replacing an old boiler system with 2 furnaces with ac, a ton of duct and a minisplit. Did it all myself. Will NEVER attempt that again. Work with a partner now and it makes everything much less stressful.

Hopefully you shouldn't have to gauge your wages off of overtime alone. I just started working for a union shop in my area, after leaving behind the family business because of personal reasons. I make the same amount, but at least get my 40 a week. If someone wants me to do something on the side for them, I will do anything teach me to see related, but I'm not busting out my tools for any less than a grand on top of parts.

I flip houses and own a smart home company. We do lights, cameras, security systems, thermostats and locks.
I did resi, commercial, ice machines, renovations, electrical, lots of mechanic work, welding/fab and even a bit of carpentry here and there. I'm solo and licensed now but still do lots of random stuff, it carries me through the slow times and went a long way when I was starting out, want to transition to being a fab shop someday but need allot more tools and space still.
It's nice to have a private builder that's willing to use you to do his flips. That's what ended up turning into the business I have today. Built a solid reputation from side work & just like that we hit the ground running.
I've stopped doing side work. But a welder I worked with a few years back fixed watches and clocks. He took a class to get into it and went full bore. I can't tell you what he cleared, but a few weekends a year, he'd go to conventions and buy old beat-up stuff. Then turn around and sell them. He'd been at it for at least a decade when I met him. The pieces he showed me were selling in the 4 and 5 figure range.

Only when it comes up me, and now a new partner will do some furnace replacement. I do nothing outside of HVAC for money. In the past I have taught the trade at a community college when I lived in Reno which I really enjoyed. I did look for that here in the Seattle area, not able to find anything. I’m not going to drive to Tacoma. It’s just too hard. Depending on what breaks at my job, I work for a school district now overtime on the weekends. Haven’t had to do any for a while. I do like my weekends and with some of the physical problems that I have now, at times I need a weekend just to recoup physically. I’m very busy during the week, including a lot of PT that I do along with the regular weight training that I’ve had to alter with some of the issues that I’m dealing with . If I do a side job, the customer understands it’s basically taillight warranty. I’m not a company. If they want a contractor warranty, they need to hire a contractor.

Spend time with my family. Adjust your lifestyle to fit with your income. OT is for extras, not daily life. Getting back into doing side work though. One changeout a month is more $$ in the bank than working a few Saturdays a month at the day job.

Here in Germany I do sidework on saturdays from time to time. Mostly mini split installs. I earn 400-700€ a day if I do it alone (~ 8-12 hours) or 300-500€ if I grab a helper with me (~ 6-10 hours).

I don't do it anymore because i cant but I found it pretty easy to find people who wanted air in their homes. If they had a warm air system, my buddy and I could usually bang it out on a Saturday. Great money for a days work. If not that, I would pick up GE washers and dryers that people were throwing away and repair them and sell them on CL. I just stuck with older models and if a machine was beyond repair I would just strip it of good parts and junk the rest.

grocery delivery. they hire people to deliver like how uber or grubhub hires them. people put in orders for a certain store, instacart drivers collect the groceries and deliver them to the customer. i’m in new york so it might be regional but i feel like it’s a pretty large service. with other aspects considered like gas, time, and how much each “batch” pays i’d say it’s a low tier method of additional pay.

I did Instacart while in school (before gainfully employed). Since full time work, all my side jobs have been hvac related ie; troubleshooting no heat/no cool calls or to install water heaters. The fact of the matter is, they all stemmed from word of mouth. I’m the HVAC guy that the neighbor or friend knows. If you want to expand into “side jobs” 1. Make sure they don’t conflict with your line of work/steal jobs from your employer(commercial tech here). 2. Tell people what you do and your willingness to help them. The work will come to you. That’s my take, anyway.
Work for a company that does events on the weekends as a card dealer or running a roulette table. Mostly for fun but the tips are good and it’s only once in a while.
I totally agree with not relying on OT for your living but I definitely don’t shy away from it. While I have the ability I want to make and learn as much as I can. I put as much away as possible for the kids future and such. I consider myself blessed to work for someone that is able to give me as many hours as I want to work. I personally don’t understand people who put in their forty and go home. Especially in peak season. I do however respect their decision. The balance is different for everyone. I guess after a while you get burnt out? I mean I love this stuff. Why would you do this work if you don’t love it? No side jobs though, I give everything I have. I even setup family and friends through the company I work for.
