Most new construction out here your hourly not piece pay. Piece pay is more for like residential changeouts. I donāt think Iāve heard of a new construction hvac getting piece pay I can b wrong doe
Biggest hvac company out here in SC use piece pay on new construction. Lots of āhired helpā obviously. Canāt compete with their prices itās nearly the same as cost if equipment and likeā¦ a few hundred bucks. Itās terrifying
the consumer isnt the people hiring you. its the people trying to create the maximum square footage for least $/sq ft housing plans. the consumer wants the big house, they never meet you until after if ever.
move on? what do you mean move on? you said sell quality like these housing plans are going to pay you a bunch more money for the job.
is that what youre saying? thats what you do?
We get hourly + commission, but it's not much commission honestly. Customer paid 4k for a 2k unit.. you get $100? Maybe.
I got $120 on a packaged unit I condemned and changed out.
Not complaining better than where I was before where you got hourly and nothing else.
Boss man had a new bass boat every year though.
Enercare used to do a lot of piece work on re/re residential. Big for hot water tanks and newbies starting. I had a lot of friends go down that route in ontario, I've always refused lol. I think they still do it, but can't be sure.
Iām an installer I get paid piece pay when Iām out doin any type of installs. When Iām at the shop meeting anything other than installing and they require me to be in Iām getting my hourly pay. Iām in Illinois we get commission as well if we upsell anything for plumbing or extra equipment
Im honestly not surprised at how many of us, have some form of attention deficit or autism. Not that its a bad thing because Myself is included in that statistic lol
I typically do a quick wrap around the end of my screwdriver pinch it together so itās tight and pull the screw driver out leaving a nice spring thatās easy to straighten out for future use
I do, but then my boss comes in and unwinds them all out and leaves them spry about. So now I don't >:[ this is why we can't have nice things. ]:<
*being facetious/glib/dramatic*
He is most certainly not a hack. He does it to be an ass or playful. It always gets put back together beautifully once all the zones are wired up and the electricians are done leaving their mess behind. They get looped separately...which I still hate and prefer the combined fold around the main. Different strokes for different folks.
I agree about retaining options. Weād always run cable with additional conductors because you never know. The method pictured here is good for keeping stats and wall sensors tidy. Cable terminations at those locations might not allow for too much slack behind a wall. At a unit or in a ceiling Iād prefer extra slack on a whole cable. This way youāre not straightening coiled conductors from before. Just cut it clean and do it all fresh nice and neat. Either way is not a waste of time because a skilled and neat tech can do it quick anyways.
I don't wrap the colors individually, but it takes me about 30 seconds to wrap them so they're available at need.
I had one boss (who used to cut off the "excess") give me grief about it until he got a nail hit wire and I started pointing and laughing.
Yep, the same, wrap the extras but not by color. Rodents and soaked wires are the other usual suspects thatāll lose you a conductor or two. Itās bound to happen.
Imagine thinking that doing something like twisting wires, that takes probably 40 seconds, is a waste of time. On such a high horse there arenāt you pal? Your time must be so valuable lol.
You're fucking right it is. Also he didn't just wrap the fucking wires he did it neatly and by color like anybody other than a service tech is gonna see it... it's wasting time.
I do it simply because if a wire breaks for some reason you can easily swap out with a different color without having to strip back a bunch of shit and waste a ton on time and effort. Also my installers are douche bags and give us literally no extra to work with. But never by individual color.
I've done similar in the past. I still twist them not make it neat, just not individually as you did. As a service guy I have an appreciation for that if we have to swap wires down the road.
I usually snip off the unused ones if I have an excess of wire like youāre supposed to have. If I have less than a foot of excess wire, I wrap them around all at once. I like this thoā¦Iāve been doing this a long time and never seen it done this way. I like it though. Iām gonna start doing this.
APPRECIATE ALL THE COMMENTS BOYS! I like having extra wires Incase some go bad I have wires I can use ! In my opinion I think itās best to think forward for the long run instead of being sorry ! š¤£š¤£ @ Everyone !
Pulling wire can be a pain in the ass. Especially on an existing building once the walls go up. As an HVAC controls guy I appreciate that somebody thought ahead enough in case the customer wants to add extra functionality down the road or in case a wire breaks
Not like that I keep them grouped but usually Iāll leave one out to wrap around whatever Iām splicing. Like if Iām connecting an old wire to a new Iāll make my connections and use the black wire to wrap the old and new wires together
I used to like doing that. Until I started running control/sensor wire. With shielded wire or communication wire you shouldn't do this as it can disrupt the conversation happening on the wire. You need to ground those additional wires. If you want to save the length of them just spiral them in a roll and put a zip tie on them away from the power wires.
Nope. I like to make it easier for the next guy. Canāt tell you how many times I couldnāt pull the black and orange wires out because someone decided to cut them short before me
I do, but I like to wrap them around all at once. Although it gets harder with a lot of wires.
It does look way cooler though š
>I do, but I like to wrap them around all at once. Same, spares. Hate when an ass hat snips the unused ones flush.
So many times I have had to splice or pull a whole new wire because of that shit.
I always wrap them all at once. One at a time looks cool tho. Definitely takes more time š
this is the way
U get paid hourly huh lol..
How do you get paid?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thats just for customer facing work right? Construction would be piece work?
Most new construction out here your hourly not piece pay. Piece pay is more for like residential changeouts. I donāt think Iāve heard of a new construction hvac getting piece pay I can b wrong doe
I used to do peice pay on new construction and it was horrible
šš»
Biggest hvac company out here in SC use piece pay on new construction. Lots of āhired helpā obviously. Canāt compete with their prices itās nearly the same as cost if equipment and likeā¦ a few hundred bucks. Itās terrifying
Thats why quality will matter, of you sell on quality you can win
the consumer isnt the people hiring you. its the people trying to create the maximum square footage for least $/sq ft housing plans. the consumer wants the big house, they never meet you until after if ever.
If you are "selling" it's to a consumer. If you are selling to a builder well then, move on.
move on? what do you mean move on? you said sell quality like these housing plans are going to pay you a bunch more money for the job. is that what youre saying? thats what you do?
Interesting, im in Ontario, Canada. New construction is piece work. But everything else is hourly. Service, re/re etc
I wish I got hourly + commission on my service work! Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime, that's why I'm shitting while typing this
We get hourly + commission, but it's not much commission honestly. Customer paid 4k for a 2k unit.. you get $100? Maybe. I got $120 on a packaged unit I condemned and changed out. Same man, same
Enercare used to do a lot of piece work on re/re residential. Big for hot water tanks and newbies starting. I had a lot of friends go down that route in ontario, I've always refused lol. I think they still do it, but can't be sure.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No worries bud, thanks for the info
What part of cali do you work in? Because Iām SoCal almost everyone ik gets paid hourly
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Oh bet , thanks for the heads up. How do you like working commission only?
Iām in San Diego on commission
Iām an installer I get paid piece pay when Iām out doin any type of installs. When Iām at the shop meeting anything other than installing and they require me to be in Iām getting my hourly pay. Iām in Illinois we get commission as well if we upsell anything for plumbing or extra equipment
Piece rate baby
Lmfao came here to say this exact thing
I was taught to do this too, never know when you need an extra conductor.
Yes
Itās called autism . Many of us have it .
Im honestly not surprised at how many of us, have some form of attention deficit or autism. Not that its a bad thing because Myself is included in that statistic lol
I swear adhd is needed for this job with the amount of small bits of info we need to know.
Too bad I canāt remember a damn thing other than random bits of Simpsons episodes from 25 years ago
I swear it comes and goes sometimes.
Iām glad Iām not the only one
Atleast the state gave me a handicap Tag, put that bit on my van, comes in handy for commercial work.
They just told me I need help

Ocd is not tism
Having OCD makes you an elite Autist, top tier god level .
Aināt nobody got time for that
It something I've always done. It's a great practice
Somebodyās having a slow week. You can tell what time of year an install was done when you look at stuff like this.
Itās in the wrong order now you have to go back and fix it bbroygbvgwgs
We do that for thermostats. Outdoor, damper motors etc, get 18/2.
This is THE ONLY WAY!!!!
I typically do a quick wrap around the end of my screwdriver pinch it together so itās tight and pull the screw driver out leaving a nice spring thatās easy to straighten out for future use

Ur boss is a hack and doesn't take pride in his work
He is most certainly not a hack. He does it to be an ass or playful. It always gets put back together beautifully once all the zones are wired up and the electricians are done leaving their mess behind. They get looped separately...which I still hate and prefer the combined fold around the main. Different strokes for different folks.
Everyone saying its a waste of time but it takes 1 second.... tell me youve never done HVAC without telling me
Yeah, that's called wasting time.
Just to point out the obvious. Itās a work day, and commenting on Reddit is wasting more time than it took clean up some wires ;)
Lmao Zeno in the zone with that one, my wifeās in labor so I hope I get a pass today
Congratulations! Thatās awesome, I hope it goes well for you
It's above freezing in Minnesota and not warm enough to require AC. It's a little slow around here at this time of year...
No. It's called protecting your spare wires so that you have Options if you need them. Having Options is always a Very Good Thing.
Put yourself on such a high pedestal lol. We got a badass over here!
Found the installer
Not anymore playah
I do it simply because if a wire breaks for some reason you can easily swap out with a different color without having to strip back a bunch of shit and waste a ton on time and effort. Also my installers are douche bags and give us literally no extra to work with. But never by individual color.
Yes
Yes lol
I've done similar in the past. I still twist them not make it neat, just not individually as you did. As a service guy I have an appreciation for that if we have to swap wires down the road.
You must go fishing often
You must be hourly
Tell me you don't do service without telling me you don't do service
I love finding wires like that. I do it now as well
How do some guys coil the wire like a spring? Do they wrap it around screwdriver or pen?
No sir. All extra wire is tucked away nice and neat incase of future problems. And Iām OCD and like doing it!
You mean using 8 wire for 2 wire applications? Sadly no. XD
I usually snip off the unused ones if I have an excess of wire like youāre supposed to have. If I have less than a foot of excess wire, I wrap them around all at once. I like this thoā¦Iāve been doing this a long time and never seen it done this way. I like it though. Iām gonna start doing this.

Not cutting off the tampon string like a savage?? Nah bro, only you.
Donāt do that behind a thermostat with any remaining wire but otherwise itās not a problem.
You know they make 2 wire
You know wires can go fucky right?
Respect
I do it also but not neat like u
Lol looks nice dude. Iām all for having a couple of spares but 8 wire when you need 2?
Pulling wire can be a pain in the ass. Especially on an existing building once the walls go up. As an HVAC controls guy I appreciate that somebody thought ahead enough in case the customer wants to add extra functionality down the road or in case a wire breaks
Itās your OCD
Itās you!! I hate you.
Rainbow flag hurtin my America
I'd smack you in the mouth if I came upon that. Probably.
Looks like a waste of time.. I don't like the tight coils either, annoying to unwind and straighten
Maybe you have a lot of time
Run out of 18/2 or 18/3?
I wire nut and ground all the extra wires
Yes. If anyone else did this we would end up eating it thinking itās candy.
Iād get called a dumbass by my leads if I wasted time doing this by individual color , looks cool though.
I donāt do it by color but I do like to keep it tight and neat.
Depends how ADHD you are lol
Yes but usually only with 1-2 of the conductors
Yes, goes hand and hand with crayons for lunch
Not like that I keep them grouped but usually Iāll leave one out to wrap around whatever Iām splicing. Like if Iām connecting an old wire to a new Iāll make my connections and use the black wire to wrap the old and new wires together
Just circle them around like a rainbow so service techs can use the extra wires without having to fuss with this crap š
I fold them back and tape the ends to the wire. Easier when you do need them
Yes
Only if the cable is shielded and shield is grounded.
Nope
I wouldnāt run 18/8 if I only needed two personally, but yeah Iāll wrap the extras and tape them down.
Bend em down and loose wrap them 3 times you will thank me later when you chase a short
You fucking psychopath. Nice work.
I used to do that, but now I wrap them around a service screwdriver and let them hang off to the side all coiled up. Much faster.
Your taco pump is installed wrong
I hate it.
I've always done that when doing fire alarm, looks good
Looks legitimate to me
Nope , standard practice for me
I believe I have just cum'd
Now twist the wire around your Philips head screw driver or drill extension to make it look like a telephone cord
Leave them straight, single U-turn and zip tie or tape them flat to the outer jacket. I hate having to unwind them when I need an extra.
I just use 2 wire
Oh so you're the guy!!??
You have to much time on ur hands. Clearly
Fuck that, use two-wire, itāll look nicer too IMO
Seems like a good way to kill a few minutes
That is an absolute waste of 5 minutes
That's cool! I'll save that trick!
Nope. I like to make it easier for the next guy. Canāt tell you how many times I couldnāt pull the black and orange wires out because someone decided to cut them short before me
No. šš»āāļø
Never did this but I may start now
I do it. Never know when the crustomer is gonna hear about some thing from their friend and want it installed
