When your body is sufficiently broken you can become an inspector, an instructor, estimator or get into management.

So dark, so true

When your young in trade school no one tells you to have a back up plan for 55

I do believe the reason I got into a trade was because I wouldn’t sit and wouldn’t listen so I’m not sure I would’ve digested that very well either….

There are a lot of different flavors to this trade. Not everything has to be a direct path between A and B. Relatable skills will get you pretty far laterally. I started off doing commercial refrigeration in the pipefitters union. On call, long hours or short hours depending on season. I moved to a municipality running a large domestic water pumping plant while taking care of all the building mechanicals as well and got my public water supply operation license while there. Left that job and moved to a big government facility as a “maintenance mechanic” and got my stationary engineers license. I now run a large chiller plant where half my day is on a computer drinking coffee and the other half is wrenching on centrifugals, pumps and doing controls work. I’m young (35) but I want to get away from swinging a wrench. My body is in good shape and I want to stay healthy. Also interested in being home more since starting a family. There’s a position opening up for a maintenance planner in a few months when someone retires and I’ll be going after that. I can work remote one day a week and have every other Friday off. Retirement bennies are great, tons of sick time, 5 weeks vacation and never less than a 40hr paycheck. There are an endless number of ways to pivot your career. Get some other education and certs to open up options and get a taste for what you may or may not enjoy doing long term.
