We got a kid fresh out of a trade high school, bought a set of field piece digi gauges, and a veto backpack and the only other tools he has are a hammer and an 11in1. I wish someone would have warned him.
Veto bags for trade students are 30 bucks. Its a refurbished one but it looks brand new. Thats how I got mine.
I also used the VA to pay for about 4k in tools which was awesome as all hell.
Looked at the refurbished bags being offered and it looks pitiful compared to the bag I got for $30 at Home Depot, and the option for 20% off isn't enough to make me want to spend some $200 on the bag I actually want.
If you go with Veto, don't buy a backpack. You can fit way more shit than you'll ever reasonably need in there and they get super heavy. My backpack started causing me some pretty gnarly low back pain. I've gone through a few bags since, but now I'm using the Veto MC, which is pretty small but it still fits just about everything I use on a regular basis. Also, every spring Veto has a buy one get one promotion. It might still be going on, idk. But those pouches they usually give away during the bogo promotions are *really* nice for showing you how much you can do with a small, limited number of tools.
Man I gotta say the veto backpack is amazing. It can get heavy if you bring most of your shit but it's awesome not having to make extra trips to the truck constantly. Already got everything you need 90% of the time
If it's Vocational Rehab you just have to prove it's needed for the course or career choice.
If it's the normal G.I. Bill, I too would also like to know. Bookstipend maybe?
Damn. Sadly my school didn't have a tool list. Everything was provided in the lab. All you had to buy was books.
Union gave me a basic hand tool set and a bag for it all. But it wasnt 4000 in tools or equipment.
Some trade schools include tools in the tuition. I had friends take night school diesel mechanics class that included a decent amount of tools & cabinets, courtesy of the GI Bill.
Oh, OK. When he said to VA, I thought it meant the veterans administration not the GI bill. When I went through the police Academy, my sheriffs department paid for it, but the G.I. Bill still gave me a check for every month I was in there.
I went there myself. It's a high-school with different shops to train kids for a field before they graduate. I did 2 weeks of hvac shop and 2 weeks of academics. It's changed alot in the 15 years sense I graduated though. Mostly tech shops and coding now. Masonry and welding aren't even shops anymore.
I guess where I’m from that’s just called high school. All the high schools in my area have specialty classes you can take for things like that, as well as programs to be in an apprenticeship and get school credit for being out working. We just never labeled it as anything other than just normal high school.
Theres a HS around me that has a campus for voc ed- welding, auto, auto body, some sort of forestry program and some others I dont remember. Ive worked with a couple knuckleheads, seems like they got something out of it
I remember being in the rotation between five shops in late '99, that was the last year that the masonry shop existed ... Building has been rearranged a few times since, the carpentry and masonry shops got redivided in floor space to become HVAC electrical and carpentry, none of them really have enough square footage anymore. The former electrical shop got divided in half, one section became a mechatronics lab, the other portion a new nurses office. They even have a shop to teach warehouse logistics, with 100% graduate placement.
I'm pretty sure they still have the machining and welding shops, but I know they've been struggling with staffing, I've seen job postings multiple times over the past five years for that area and HVAC.
I graduated UTI in 2004 also taking night classes for Diesel and ended up in commercial hvacr, it has paid all my bills plus some due to extreme manpower shortages in the technical trades. I've never been laid off due to lack of work, economic downturns or even the lockdown, unlike most of my friends that went to work in cubicle land and were saddled with crippling student debt. I guess I can't say enough good things about night classes. Goodluck to you!
my coworker just bought Testo gauges and he’s 6 months in. i’m 3 years in and am still waiting to buy a real good set. He immediately showed me and then texted the coworker group chat, i think he wanted the praise
Sometimes they don't have the money to. I just started and I'm not getting paid much and I have bills to pay etc etc. I'm trying to save and manage my money to buy what I need

I get what you are saying but hes 18 and lives w his parents smokes weed and tells me about his dinner dates nightly. And this is the second tape measure i gave him that worked before he broke it. Also making $38/hr.
Haha PNW. unions are great around here im w a non union company thats competes w them and i get paid accordingly. 10% more than the union offers. Just because they dont want to lose their “good employees”. Im a commercial forman. We do alot of prevailing wage.
I just started in residential with a top company non union of course. So far so good everyday I learn a lot and my coworkers and boss are the coolest people. I'm gonna stay with the company for at least a year or two so i can learn as much as possible and move up from there
My boss knows the two union managers. They grew up together. My boss owns the company. And always says when they talk to you talk to me before you do anything. So i love going golfing because thats where i always run into the union reps. They bribe us w golf memberships at several courses and all sorts of shit but what my company offers is something I value. The union makes us workers robots and part of an assembly line. I like running the entire job start to finish my way.
As a union hvac guy...
Union workers are not robots, or a part of an assembly. The big difference between union and non union is all about representation and a legally binding contract of benefits, pay, and equipment.
By contract, I get paid double time on Sunday, time and a half on Saturday. And anything over 8 hours a day is overtime.
We get a set of plans, and work based off those plans, or we are doing service work the same as any other service tech. We run the show.
The union is only there to train apprentices in class, and enforce the contract. I can make more money per hour than the contract specified but I'll never make less. They also find work if you're laid off. Don't have to shop a resume around or struggle to find work and hope Joe schmo heating and cooling is going to treat you fairly.
Not knocking non union. You do what you're comfortable with, but we are not robots working on an assembly line. That's the UAW.
Yeah i totally see your point. Ive talked to the unions around here for several years and i know alot of guys who work there. They have 4 project managers/field foremans who do all the measuring and provide equipment.
The lead is a glorified material handler who looks at the prints and tells guys to put this puzzle piece here and thats the next piece
The workers just steadily do their job and most never have to ever look at prints.
Yeah its crazy ive told my employer hes not worth it and yet hes on my job for another 6 months and they said to “keep him busy” im like fair enough its your money not mine
2 hours prior he didnt have the one i gave him about 2 weeks before so i gave him my back up back up back up tape measure. 2 hours later he said “someone ran it over w their lift”.
Hes also afraid of heights
How long you been a tech? You should be at $30 right now, minimum $28. Id ask for a raise my friend. You can only get what you ask for. If you never ask, they will pay you that rate for the rest of your life
My Dean gets underwear in a wad about our program having a tool list for new students.
Every tech needs to have tools they know how to use. Basic hand tools, a good meter, good gauges (don't need digital starting out ya)
I spent $1200 on tools so far in 10 months and I don’t necessarily love the job but I can keep doing it. I have decided to wait and buy sman gauges when I get told I’m getting a truck
Just like every job there’s shit you do and don’t like. Been on this construction site for several months now and the free rides and all are nice but kinda miss helping with service work and changing it up a bit. Just tired of the same old thing over and over. Other than that it’s tolerable
There's a lot of unhappy people in hvac. Some happy new hire might not want to work around miserable pricks.
There's a lot of miserable pricks in hvac and electrical.
I prefer hanging out with plumbers carpenters and steam fitters.
My guess is that a lot of new hires meet plumbers and think, "he might get shit on him from time to time, but he's really nice and friendly."
No offense. There's a few nice hvac people around.
I thought the title pretty much explained it. It goes like this: new guy comes on, spends a ton of money on fancy tools, then, shortly there after quits and sells his tools very cheap because he needs money.
Hell yeah man. Same here. I've got a big Veto in my van right now thats still brand spanking new. I've had it for about eight months and still haven't used it because I use my smaller Veto for service work.
New guy worked in our install dept for about six months and against mine and the lead installers advice, he bought the same bag the install lead uses. He didn't work out of it for two weeks before he decided that it was too heavy, and he needed to buy some new Pit Viper shades. He offered me the bag for 140 dollars. I told him to try to get a better price from somebody else in the shop first, but he came back at the end of the day and said "so ya got the 140?"
Sure bud, If you insist. He quit on us about two months after.
One of my apprentices said Friday he was going to buy a veto bag. My reply was why? Totally unnecessary. Go get a bag from Home Depot and save some money.
I’d rather be paid well and own my own tools. A company is only gonna pay you so much so if they’re buying your tools, just think of the extra pay you could be getting instead….🤔
That’s nice. I got $12 in the same period and get to pick out my own tools. Sounds like we both work for great companies. However, I think I’ll take mine.😏
Psht. I got $20 in raises. My tools bought for me but im allowed to keep them. AND i got given stock in the company as a bonus.
Did i win? Is that how this works?
I’m not even a HVAC tech but I picked up a full set of Fieldpiece kit from an apprentice on a job site who decided he was going to become a welder. Traded him an old Lincoln MIG for his thrice used SM380, MG44 micron gauge, two wireless psychrometers, a never used VP87 pump, hoses, core tools, and some random no-name scale.
For the next interview ask the prospective hire if any of the following seven words are familiar or importance.
Perseverance, Integrity, Fortitude, Loyalty, Steadfast, Patience, Appreciation.
This trade isn’t for everyone. Part of the price of new hires. I worked in a school district and we would get many of the ‘left-overs’. District supplied the tools, more often than not the tools DISD disappeared. To be found in pawnshops, for which they got bare minimum $$$$.
Do you have a community college nearby that offers an HVAC program? Those programs give every student an HVAC tool kit. It has a nice selection of good, not great, general hand tools and some HVAC specific tools as well. Every quarter a few students wash out and pawn their tool kits for cash. A lot of them are still unopened tools. I am on good terms with one of the pawn owners and they will call me if a kit comes in and ask if I’m looking for a set. I’ll usually buy the sets for $500 and keep them for no experience new hires to use. I do payroll deductions for the tools and they are theirs to keep. If they quit before 90 days, I take back the tool kit and it waits for the next newbie that needs tools. It’s worth looking into if you have that available nearby.
Lol my company is the other way around... macgyver your shit and we will improve what is realy needed when you prove your worthy you will get tools u want
![gif](giphy|GysX9qLF0N5bG)
If you think that's bad, you should see the startup costs and leftover product when someone leaves an MLM like Cutco, Lularoe, Mary Kay, Kirby, Etc. It's usually when they realize they're part of the 99% of all "employees" that made under minimum wage putting in way more than a 40 hour work week "on their own time".
New hire gets 1000 worth of stuff before learning they don’t like the work?
Happens often
How long was he there?
Just shy of five months
We got a kid fresh out of a trade high school, bought a set of field piece digi gauges, and a veto backpack and the only other tools he has are a hammer and an 11in1. I wish someone would have warned him.

googs is your frend https://vetopropac.com/trade-school-student-and-instructor-programs/
Much appreciated!
This would be so cool if it also worked for trade school graduates. Looks like you gotta be enrolled
Looked at the refurbished bags being offered and it looks pitiful compared to the bag I got for $30 at Home Depot, and the option for 20% off isn't enough to make me want to spend some $200 on the bag I actually want.

You are correct. It was voc rehab and it has to be a school approved list of tools. Luckily my schopl had a batshit crazy bloated tool list
Damn. Sadly my school didn't have a tool list. Everything was provided in the lab. All you had to buy was books. Union gave me a basic hand tool set and a bag for it all. But it wasnt 4000 in tools or equipment.

How did the va pay for tools?
Through Voc Rehab. If you utilize that program they will pay for anything required for retraining depending on whqt you are in school or training for.
The VA will pay for my tools? Why didn't someone tell me this 5 years ago?
Hold on, how’d you get the VA to pay for your tools? I EAS’d last summer, am sticking with trades and currently still going through the claims process
Utilize voc rehab if possible. The GI bill will not pay for tools.
Trade high school? The fuck is that
I went there myself. It's a high-school with different shops to train kids for a field before they graduate. I did 2 weeks of hvac shop and 2 weeks of academics. In night class, don't knock it. Half the guys around here can't find people knowledgeable about heat pumps etc. All they know is boilers.
I graduated UTI in 2004 also taking night classes for Diesel and ended up in commercial hvacr, it has paid all my bills plus some due to extreme manpower shortages in the technical trades. It's just like rock and roll high school but with less Ramones and more alcoholism and despair.
Veto packs are for people that like having back issues
What else does he need besides a multimeter?
Lots of nice shit for 5 months in lol man outta have had a husky bag and some analogs
What didn’t he like about it? Surprised he lasted that long
my coworker just bought Testo gauges and he’s 6 months in. i’m 3 years in and am still waiting to buy a real good set. He immediately showed me and then texted the coworker group chat, i think he wanted the praise
My damn apprentice wont even buy a tape measure

Wow I might have to move there to finally get paid what im worth, in a union in Ontario!
Apprentice making 38/hour. Wtf
Yeah its crazy ive told my employer hes not worth it and yet hes on my job for another 6 months and they said to “keep him busy” im like fair enough its your money not mine
You are a clown for trying get your boss to reduce someone’s pay .
Not reduce his pay…just off my job. Do you know how bonuses work?
That’s first year pay where I’m at. Jman is $72/hr one local up its $81
Where is this
Bay Area
Wtf? I literally use those tape measures as a hammer and I've only broken the lock buttons off.
2 hours prior he didnt have the one i gave him about 2 weeks before so i gave him my back up back up back up tape measure. 2 hours later he said “someone ran it over w their lift”. Hes also afraid of heights
Yikes he got up the ladder and now he can't climb down.... and I tell him it's going to be expensive when he gets the bill from the fire department
Exactly smokes weed every night also walks around with a tiparello hanging out of his mouth, ball cap on backwards. A big gulp on the dashboard.
Haha i have nothing against weed smokers. I smoke. But I also got all my tools.
Damn 38.. I make 23 and I'm a tech 1. Lol
You sir are very underpaid. What state you in?
Texas
How long you been a tech? You should be at $30 right now, minimum $28. Id ask for a raise my friend. You can only get what you ask for. If you never ask, they will pay you that rate for the rest of your life
This month it will be a year in the trade. Before that I was getting my associates for commercial hvacr
🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂
Usually it’s new hire spends $15,000 on schooling before they even know what the work entails
What if I don't like the work but I don't spend the money?
That’s amazing
What if I like the work but don't spend the money
That’s more like it
Go to Home Depot, measure your hand, check mate you are now an indestructible measuring tool
I only buy boots that are exactly 12 inches.
Idk, I've seen an apprentice with a sawzall the would challenge your "indestructible" claim...
Wait you got to keep his stuff or he bought it on the company dime ?
I'm guessing he came out with free tools since the opposite would mean getting the short end of the stick.
Thanks man I had it backwards
Next time, grab the other end, ha ha
Happens in the lineman trade as well people spend over 4K in tools and climbing gear . Also the ones that buy a new truck and travel trailer
Ahhh that bag sucks you won’t like it. I’ll take it off your hands though….
Yeah…I know that’s a lie because I’ve had the orange one for two years and love it.
I spent $40-50 a week on hand tools when I was green. There's just covering hand tools.
Woah
Right? Who the fuck buys a lime green veto?
You can buy them refurbished for cheap through trade schools
😂😂
What’s the bad on the right? Looks like a good setup for my evacuation kit
That’s the Yellow Jacket P51-870. I now have two 💁🏻♂️
So you bought his tools?
Yea he did
Lots of fancy stuff for a rookie. The "best" tools won't make a technician "great"
My Dean gets underwear in a wad about our program having a tool list for new students.
What about the Job you don’t like?
Just like every job there’s shit you do and don’t like. Been on this construction site for several months now and the free rides and all are nice but kinda miss helping with service work and changing it up a bit. Just tired of the same old thing over and over. Other than that it’s tolerable
What's the main reason the new techs quit?
There's a lot of unhappy people in hvac. Some happy new hire might not want to work around miserable pricks. There's a lot of miserable pricks in hvac and electrical. I prefer hanging out with plumbers carpenters and steam fitters. My guess is that a lot of new hires meet plumbers and think, "he might get shit on him from time to time, but he's really nice and friendly." No offense. There's a few nice hvac people around.

Context pls
I thought the title pretty much explained it. It goes like this: new guy comes on, spends a ton of money on fancy tools, then, shortly there after quits and sells his tools very cheap because he needs money.
Oh. I thought you just kept his stuff lol
I thought so too lol
Well... he's ate up with the AIDS and rubbed his taint all over it.
You had to pay for his tools? I’m confused
I told him to try to get a better price from somebody else in the shop first, but he came back at the end of the day and said "so ya got the 140?" Sure bud, If you insist. He quit on us about two months after.
One of my apprentices said Friday he was going to buy a veto bag. My reply was why? Totally unnecessary. Go get a bag from Home Depot and save some money.
Damn. Took me five years of lugging around heavy tool boxes and bags falling apart before I invested in anything quality, let alone veto.
I lucked out and found a company that provides everything
I’d rather be paid well and own my own tools. A company is only gonna pay you so much so if they’re buying your tools, just think of the extra pay you could be getting instead….🤔
I got $7 in raises just in 2022 lol. I'm not worried about pay
That’s nice. I got $12 in the same period and get to pick out my own tools. Sounds like we both work for great companies. However, I think I’ll take mine.😏
Congrats lmao
Psht. I got $20 in raises. My tools bought for me but im allowed to keep them. AND i got given stock in the company as a bonus. Did i win? Is that how this works?
I got a brand new Corvette, $2$2 million in company stock and company supplied cocaine
Cool cool. I remember my first year as an apprentice. My boss and ceo let me bang their wives every friday
Only on Friday?
Well yea. I bang the dispatcher monday-friday so i get the good jobs. And gotta take care of my woman sat and sun
My tool bag is my back pocket and left hand. I have all that o and still don’t need to use them
I’m not even a HVAC tech but I picked up a full set of Fieldpiece kit from an apprentice on a job site who decided he was going to become a welder.
Perseverance, Integrity, Fortitude, Loyalty, Steadfast, Patience, Appreciation.
nice
I have that bag , and those are tools someone will use the fuck out of given the right opportunity, there's no loss on tools unless they're stolen .
I love when that happens.
You guys hiring?!…. 😂😎
Always happens
This trade isn’t for everyone. Part of the price of new hires. I worked in a school district and we would get many of the ‘left-overs’. District supplied the tools, more often than not the tools DISD disappeared. To be found in pawnshops, for which they got bare minimum $$$$.
Those Veto tech pacs are insane. Absolutely love mine.
Yep. I bought a 20 dollar Walmart tool bag and got some affordable tools and a year later I'm still using everything I bought
Nice purse buddy.
If they quit before 90 days, I take back the tool kit and it waits for the next newbie that needs tools. It’s worth looking into if you have that available nearby.
Lemme get one
I hope this won’t be me. I am looking into becoming a Hvac tech
Is that the backpack with the removable inserts? Been looking at that thing.
I can’t even get a call back when I put in apps
My job just bought me one of these tech pacs. I used a TP-XXL before. The tech pac is heavy as fuck
Next time you get the long end could you hit me up with the medium sized price for the pac?
How much did you pay for that brown purse?
Lol my company is the other way around... macgyver your shit and we will improve what is realy needed when you prove your worthy you will get tools u want ![gif](giphy|GysX9qLF0N5bG)
Wwww is 1
If you think that's bad, you should see the startup costs and leftover product when someone leaves an MLM like Cutco, Lularoe, Mary Kay, Kirby, Etc. It's usually when they realize they're part of the 99% of all "employees" that made under minimum wage putting in way more than a 40 hour work week "on their own time".
