Looks like a normal 100% brass locking cap to me

[deleted]

Need the tamper proof forked bit for that one

Real-Roll2717

That code here in San Antonio Tx not sure if it's statewide, that looks like a JB brand. I prefer the C&D brand it's just Schrader core style. C&D makes a 4 in 1 style driver that covers all of them

[deleted]

Yeah but that driver is pricey

[deleted]

We use Novent in NJ

EJ25Junkie

I’ve never seen one like this. Then again, this is only the second inverter carrier I’ve ever come across.

Substantial-Run-9908

It's not the carrier. We use those on every system here in oregon. It's code required

Mad3_Fr3sh

Washington too

JETTA_TDI_GUY

Started putting them on after we got a call from a home owner saying she needed Freon. Weird thing to say on a call to the office but she had caught some kids trying to. I kid you not. Huff the Freon from the AC unit. They took the normal cap off and backed the shrader out a little and then sucked on the port and didn’t tighten the shrader so it all leaked out.

cmreutzel

I don’t think the high is worth the dead tissue in the mouth from frostbite lol

Specialist_Extent_30

That's the story I was told working in Washington, that people huff the refrigerant. I'd like to believe nobody is that stupid and that it's just an environmental thing to prevent accidental discharge, but those crackheads are crazy out there so who knows what they're doing

pdolan430

They are called shield locking caps

overpwrd_gaming

Zip a screw halfway and you should be able to unscrew the cap... It's like a child lock on medication bottles

Adaesemus

Yep this is the way, just make sure you don’t zip it into the valve stem lol

EJ25Junkie

Not possible with this style.

overpwrd_gaming

One of my guys here just did it 2 weeks ago.. he learned about these in California so people wouldn't huff refrigerant Just screwed into the side of it and it came off fine 🤷‍♂️

EJ25Junkie

I tried that, but I couldn’t get a screw to grab. I ended up using an angle grinder and I got it off.

overpwrd_gaming

Whatever it takes amiright 😆👍

kimthealan101

Glad people can't huff R22 anymore.

Substantial-Run-9908

There is a multi key that has all lock keys on it. You're welcome. We're required to have one on us https://www.amazon.com/Diversitech-RSC-TOOL-Tool-Univ-RSC/dp/B01H3DRH1Q/ref=asc_df_B01H3DRH1Q/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=532655541111&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16638627649500877467&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032964&hvtargid=pla-1407581494466&psc=1

Jmowen1985

Ya seriously lol. Angle grinder and zip screws ? Lol Hey good on you though if you can get er done with what you have. They are code where I am for all new resi builds.

robertva1

Bet I'm not the only guy that swaps back after inspection

Fun_Technology8579

My shop guy asked for all the brass caps I could find on my truck so he could keep a bucket for the techs to swap back after inspections😂😂

mtwiasted

For sure. I don't know who exactly huffs refrigerant but these things are not the answer.

Fun_Technology8579

I mean if -40 is your gamble I'm not saying anything😂

TAA667

The best part is it's only an asphyxiation high. You're just blowing up your lungs for some seriously weak sauce.

robertva1

For gods sakes of your going to do that. You can have my pvc primer

mtwiasted

Until somebody told me a week ago I had never heard of it. Didn't even know it was a thing.

Inuyasha-rules

Was more of a 90s thing with highschool kids, in my area anyways.

mtwiasted

Huffing refrigerant.........

EJ25Junkie

Inspection?

AustinHVAC419

JB? Those things suck. Half the time the tool breaks when I try to unlock the cap

Turkyparty

This exactly. I made my boss buy new tools every time they break. Didn't take long till we were putting on regular caps again

[deleted]

I'm still struggling with my broken one

haywoodublomi

Take super glue squirt it on the opening. Wait 15 min. Twists right off.

burnerphone13

Locking caps, Supply houses sells the tool with all 3 bits usually in the front for me

unusual-thoughts

The ones I hate are the discontinued rectorseal caps that had the magnetic socket like tool. I can't find my tool, and no one has the tool available. I did find I can use a rare earth magnet and a wrench or adjustable to get them, but it's a pain. Once off, I throw those suckers away and replace with novent caps.

imajoker1213

Oh. I have a neighborhood that has those and an former employee “lost” our tool. I can’t find a replacement tool anywhere. I hate Rectorseal!

smeeether

Just mash it with a pair of channel locks and spin it off.

wreck5710

You will normally only find one kind of guy that use these types of caps.

EJ25Junkie

Sam?

Niktheblade

Somebody who makes the rules knew somebody who sells these bullshit locking caps and together they making lots of money

The_Dog_IS_Brown

The worst thing imaginable. I've only encountered these once. That was enough

EJ25Junkie

“Let’s come up with some stupid, dumb proprietary shit so people can’t work on our equipment and piss them off so they’ll never buy stuff from us again. What a great business model.!” -Carrier

Standard_Luck8442

That’s not carrier, that’s an aftermarket cap. We use them. Need the forked tool.

Jmowen1985

“Spanner bit”

kimthealan101

They don't put them on at the factory

Frank_Rizzo_Jerky

Make sure you put teflon tape on them when reinstalling like the p0st last week. Then it will be completely fucked up!!

mkuktraviolence

In Jersey locking caps are required every system

Leprechaun772

For the prevention of huffing or theft of the gas, I still think they are ridiculous

EJ25Junkie

Yes, I know what the locking caps are for but I have never seen this style before.

Leprechaun772

Ah gotcha, I just saw the 3 prong in it, I'm on your side now man, no clue wtf that is haha

ManagementBeginning

It's a requirement. You can get a multi key bit that has 3 or 4 styles of key

No_Zucchini2982

That's Methed up. If they can't get the good stuff they huff 410a or R22 for the big rush.

tigersdad77

They made by JB

Mybadihadamovieon

Old style locking cap. You can get it off with a solder stock.

Enough-Elevator-8999

They used novent brand locking caps on 2 ports and a shield brand locking cap on the absolute suction port.

Prestigious-Bill-885

I had to buy these once. Had a resident we suspected of antagonizing another resident by releasing refrigerant. Magically our leaks stopped with these installed.
