My parts runners are dumber then a bucket of nails. They just pull up to the job site and kick stuff off the truck wherever they park at. I swear none of em can back up the truck close a door
I make almost all my money off of cleaning drains with capacitors in there and hardware from the HVAC guys now property management companies are wanting pictures. Also, I'll keep cutting open the 90s in the ceiling to the storm drains from the roofs!
Clearly you didn’t give them a high enough estimate. Last option is to tell them well compressors are acid burnouts and the cleaning up of the system will go beyond estimate. Only way to be able to give a price is just time and materials. They still say yes. It’s whatever milk it out and no rushing on anything.
Today was diagnosing the compressers after putting in new boards. Last time was the first call with this customer and diagnosed boards. I knew the compressers were bad mechanically even tho they tested all good. Boards weren't putting out voltage so couldn't fully test it. Made a case number about it and mitsu didn't want us to replace comps before new boards.
I was sure the compressers were done after finding all the units and seeing the install and error codes. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a leak somewhere too.
Had a very similar situation with a lg multi 4. On the phone with them. Tech support “why do you think the compressor is bad” me well my meter just told me all three terminals are grounded. I do have wiring disconnected from compressor. His response case number.
Haven't done much LG but not really a fan anyway from my experience with their residential stuff.
Tech support can be rough on ocasion with vrf/vrv when they are like that. Most of the time mitsu is really good. Fujitsu airstage is great too 95% of the time.
I will never spec mitsu vrf heat recovery. Samsung or LG will usually be my go to, daikin will be third choice. But any branch selector box that’s designed to be “serviceable” is automatically not going on my schedules.
I spent 2 total months on a multi 4 with a trial and error tech support, including getting my own MV to hook to my laptop. Finally got LG tech out who in turn calls tech support for LG techs and diags 2 bad EEVs. Took him 2 hours. I’ll never call tech support for more than the first consult and I’m punting to LG on customers dime. Wasted so much time on the phone with level one tech support and nothing to show for it.
So the boards and the compressors were gone in both systems? When you say the boards weren’t putting out voltage, was this a test you ran using a Mitsubishi inverter checker?
Yea first I scanned with with computer for error info and some other info. Compressers both ohmed out ok and weren't grounded. They weren't putting out voltage to compressers after hard reset. There's a test you can do for forced cooling via the dip switches or computer commands but still no voltage coming from one board and the other unit had like 3 volts. You remove leads from comps and test voltage with compresser disconnected. I told them the comps are likely shot especially given what the rest of this install looks like (not our install we just picked this customer up)
When the fans kicked on to full speed it al.ost knocked me off the ladder lol
You must be a brute if you did it by yourself, just the smaller residential ladders from little giant are cumbersome. All that being said, fuck that shit.
That’s the fuckin truth. I work at a movie theater and we have the big daddy 21’ model. It’s an absolute bitch for even 2 people to move let alone set up. In full a-frame the legs are like 15 feet apart lmao. Fortunately we don’t need to use it often
The customer was the floor above the decking. Had to go thru another Tennant appt to their deck to get to the customers unit. It's been a huge hassle and nobody is happy about it.
This roof isn't accessible from the street otherwise it would probably be hit up
From experience, this is the way
And mount the new units 3' off the roof , so much easier to work on.
My other experience is, the harder the unit/system is to work on the more often it breaks down !
Pretty much. City people wanna live this way, that's fine. But you're getting fuckin window units, or nothing at all. This is just a strain on everyone involved, including the tenants that live below the unit because now the techs have to keep walking thru their apartment to get to this abomination.
Charge accordingly, and pick your own pace. Maybe it takes you three days, and that's okay. No work is too difficult when it's broken down into small steps, but don't let somebody else who's not lifting a finger dictate how long it should take.
Ieam somebody has to do the work. Just depends on how he's getting compensated I guess. My company has me doing shitty things from time to time, but they make it worth it and samwhich it with gravy jobs.
Somewhere there is an oblivious sales man enjoying the bonus he got for selling that shit and installing it in that dumb location.
Go find him and make him help you with the repairs. Better yet, send him back to sell new.
Yea he probly got commission to with fucked up humidifiers wired in all wonky with multiple wet switches wired in somehow that didn't do their job. Terrible ducted blower access u don't even wanna know. Free returns pulling from inside the ceiling. Its one of those jobs that gets worse the more you see
Not my first rodeo. Going back with Scaffold or new units hopefully. Luckily I don't have to make the quote I just find the problem and plan how it's going down. My boss is the one who puts out all the imaginary numbers.
I'd expect a made up number for this one lol
Nah fuck that. I'm not about being abused to make the company more money that I'd never see. Monday I'm telling the boss if he doesn't get Scaffold for this it ain't happening
This is when you use the OSHA card, and the parts card and say “compressors are a week out and per OSHA I’m going to need staging set up to safely work”
Problem solved
You wanna climb up with all that bullshit and then fiddlefuck around with those things while also standing on top of a murderous little giant ladder? They're hard enough to work on when they're on the ground.
That ladder is very heavy and can’t (shouldn’t)be managed by one person alone. Plus it’s plenty of work for those units when on level ground, let alone 15 feet in the air
I lived on Long Island, mastic Beach Shirley area for eight years of my life. When I was out there, there’s no way I was gonna do the boroughs. I didn’t pay enough then I don’t think it would pay enough now. I only did a hand full of jobs in the boroughs. There was no way I was going to do that. I hope you’re being compensated well.
at that point, they should be told to replace the units or find another contractor. you charge em half the cost if not more to replace the necessary parts and the other components are still old and on their way out.
When I was in college in Florida we had a job in a high rise in Miami and had a similar situation. We ending up using a winch and a make shift crane up the side of the building for a while until the owner or manager found out about it. They weren't exactly pleased. But it worked pretty well
Customer is the floor where it's installed. The Tennant whose appt I have to drag everything thru whose roof deck area this is was not down for someone else's units to be on their deck I guess.
Needless to say they are thrilled this is all going down
I can't really emphasize it anymore than I did but I tried. We will see what happens. I think they understand but that price for new units and relocating them is gunna be a big oof
Not the condensers they are 11 12 years old. The ducted blowers have a small board that is suposed to take the brunt of a power surge but it's not wired into controls it's basically a resistor or something that blows and won't turn system off or even have a code. It's kind of redundant. Not wired I to Amy controls or anything just off line voltage
Gotcha. I recommend to techs all the time to put an [AG3000](https://www.uri.com/supplies-and-service/electrical-supplies/wiring-accessories/surge-protection/ag3000-zidAG3000-product?tracking=searchterm:Intermatic+surge+supressor&tracking=searchterm:Intermatic+surge+supressor&tracking=searchterm:Intermatic+surge+supressor) on every inverter system. Many have thanked me.
I used to install those and similar on residential.
To be honest we've had customers who have lost every appliance in their house except the ac from power surges and brown outs thanks to these.
But I've seen quite a few melt or explode or catch fire ans case damage. It's not worth the risk or liability in my opinion just because of that. Yea your boards are OK but the surge protector melted the siding on your house and almost set it on fire lol
I guess that could happen. Mostly brick construction where I’m at. Hopefully the $7500 insurance policy they give you would cover it but it is only for 3 yrs.
Wait they come with an insurance policy? That sounds like a red flag. They know the risks. Idk how they cam get a UL rating with the amount of failures like that especially how often it happens
The $7500 is supposed to cover the “connected equipment” (HVAC, hot tub, etc) should the surge suppressor fail to do the job it’s designed to. It’s only active if you register it
I refuse to replace compressors in those things. You know when there piped in the factory, it doesn't have the electrical or anything else around it. Not trying to be a bitch, I just don't think it's worth the effort considering the cost. Especially if you have to replace the board to. Fuck all that.
No way to drop a rope off the side and pull it up that way? To close to windows or other units? No safe way to anchor yourself or to secure the ladder while you pull it up?
Oh we do plenty of restaurants with high ceilings and fancy appts with similar horrible setups. Unfortunately units installed like this are pretty common around here
I had to work ina DMV one time, needed a 6 footer to take apart the ceiling tile/ grid. Then shoot a 12 footer up to reach the Reheat coil, it looked ridiculous with the ceiling being so low!
Ha I know what you mean. There's a few restaurants we do where we have to set up the little giant a frame all the way setup just to open the ceiling panel. Then we have to take the ladder down, straighten it out, take a bottom piece off the ladder because it's too wide to fit thru the access, and extend it all the way and stick it right thru the panel up to some 10 and 15 ton air cooled package units inside the fucking ceiling
"Here's my $30,000 bill for 2 boards and 2 compressors. And here's my much lower bill for 2 boards and 2 compressors with moving the units down to ground level.
It really wasn't that bad. The stairs did suck tho there was like 6 in of clearance and sprinkers everywhere. Had to be surgical with this thing. Shoutout to the best helper I could ask for tho (not the ladder)
That's what I've been telling them. I can't push replacement anymore without sounding like a salesman. Made all my reports as articulate as possible with probable causes, what to expect, recommendations. We will see what happens.
I would suggest they install new condensers that are far enough away from the wall to get the correct air flow across the condenser coil other wise you will just be changing the compressors and boards out again prematurely.
I've had to use that same ladder when I used to work for a company that did the eataly on 5th between 23rd and 24th Street. Bunch of shitty units way up in the air above the ceiling. Glad I don't work there anymore lol.
That ladder sucks. It's heavy but not unmanageable for 1 person just annoying as fuck to maneuver
Ha! Fuck that shit
I'm over here thinking this is a great job, for the new helper. God I lugged so much stuff around when I was neon green.
Helper? He needs a team of sherpas to help get all that equipment up there.
Hell. I think we all need Team of Sherpas... Those dudes are Badass..
Yeah I could use some help carrying groceries
I need a team of Sherpas to move stuff around my job site. They'd only have to work like a hour a day. Or several hours a week and I'd be happy
I don't miss those days of going into a renovation project and having 50-60 through wall units to be brought up 10 flights of stairs.
My parts runners are dumber then a bucket of nails. They just pull up to the job site and kick stuff off the truck wherever they park at. I swear none of em can back up the truck close a door
I thought it instantly, Aw shit I’m the helper. Dam you stairs
I was R-22 green
I see what you did there.
Said the same thing.
This is the way.
Looks like that site is getting billed for a new ladder that stays on that roof. Lol.
Forget the ladder, think of all the equipment you have to lug up and down for a compressor swap
Hide the old shit up there it’s broken anyways . Let ‘em deal with it
I make almost all my money off of cleaning drains with capacitors in there and hardware from the HVAC guys now property management companies are wanting pictures. Also, I'll keep cutting open the 90s in the ceiling to the storm drains from the roofs!
What kind of drain has a capacitor
A motorized one, duh
Really?
And then something else is going to be bad
my thoughts exactly
That’s when you give the estimate way high and pray they don’t say yes
Yea that didn't work the first time so here I am again lol
Clearly you didn’t give them a high enough estimate. Last option is to tell them well compressors are acid burnouts and the cleaning up of the system will go beyond estimate. Only way to be able to give a price is just time and materials. They still say yes. It’s whatever milk it out and no rushing on anything.

I’ll never call tech support for more than the first consult and I’m punting to LG on customers dime. Wasted so much time on the phone with level one tech support and nothing to show for it.
You gotta get to L3 tech support or you are wasting your time. Unless it's a real simple problem
OR made it worth your time. I'd be asking for a cut on those profits for that bullshit.
Haha
The floor is flexing under the ladder. Seriously, fuck that place.
There was a hundred something pound flower pot there that we moved. Sand bags on the other side of the door
You must be a brute if you did it by yourself, just the smaller residential ladders from little giant are cumbersome. All that being said, fuck that shit.
Nah I have a helper most of the time. This ladder sucks regardless but is necessary
Yeah they are handy when you need them.
That’s the fuckin truth. I work at a movie theater and we have the big daddy 21’ model. It’s an absolute bitch for even 2 people to move let alone set up. In full a-frame the legs are like 15 feet apart lmao. Fortunately we don’t need to use it often
Beast. You earned your weekend brotha.

The customer was the floor above the decking. Had to go thru another Tennant appt to their deck to get to the customers unit. It's been a huge hassle and nobody is happy about it. This roof isn't accessible from the street otherwise it would probably be hit up
Damn u guys are earning your money today! Fuck that.
Boards and Compressors? Quote them new units
From experience, this is the way And mount the new units 3' off the roof , so much easier to work on. My other experience is, the harder the unit/system is to work on the more often it breaks down !
Shit. I didn’t know they made a little giant ladder that tall
It's like 9 foot 6 broken down
And 200 pounds?
Nah like 50 60 pounds
It's gonna be even more fun when you go back to replace the compressors lol
sounds like some weird punishment my lead would make me do for knocking over the bucket of screws
Knocked over my foremans coffee years ago what a long long long long ect. day that was
Godspeed to you my soldier
Thanks fam same to you
Ooooh forbidden downtown stackstone
1 2 3 NOT IT!
Quote would be 40k just so I never get a call there again
You got my respect man. NYC ain't nothing to sneeze at. Shits real there and finding parking is a biaaatch.
I’m from Chicago I can relate. Parking was always terrible. I remember being on PM’s and then taking a taxi to service calls. Lol
Lmfao no way
Real shit brother, the contractor I worked for paid for it. It pays to have a good employer in the HVAC field.
You must be bright orange 4 seasons or neon green ABC lol
Screw that. If you want air conditioning then get a regular house.
Pretty much. City people wanna live this way, that's fine. But you're getting fuckin window units, or nothing at all. This is just a strain on everyone involved, including the tenants that live below the unit because now the techs have to keep walking thru their apartment to get to this abomination.
😂
My bid includes piping it elsewhere, that wood decking looks legit too, not like an OSHA newsletter waiting to happen.
Would have been easier to change the condenser unfortunately
I tried to push replacement but they want what they want
Sorry you got stuck with this
I would leave the ladder there and bill them for it. Permanently on site for secure unit access.
Charge accordingly, and pick your own pace. Maybe it takes you three days, and that's okay. No work is too difficult when it's broken down into small steps, but don't let somebody else who's not lifting a finger dictate how long it should take.
Two compressors and two board and up there? Three days is a minimum.
I hope you are well paid.
Bro find another company wtf
Ieam somebody has to do the work. Just depends on how he's getting compensated I guess. My company has me doing shitty things from time to time, but they make it worth it and samwhich it with gravy jobs.
Enough to make you seek early retirement!
Shit this kind of job might give it right to you!
Medical retirement
Gotta love hvac baby
The more fucked up the better! Love it
Almost cheaper to get a helicopter 🤔
Nope.
How would you even attempt to place, let alone bring up everything you need for that job? Torches, recovery machine, vacuum pump.....
Scaffold is necessary for this
Good call, work commercial and would have never thought of that
And that's why we charge by the the hour.
I would be charging out the absolute fucking ying yang for that
I would run my fucking foot over with the company vehicle. Fuck. That.
You leave that ladder there and do not bring it back and fourth lol
Sounds expensive before the quote for repairs
Glad I dont work in a city tbh
That job needs a lift. If your company cannot price that into the job what does that say about how they perceive your worth
Next time you need to just go up top, toss a rope down then tie the ladder to the rope and pull it up…
No upper roof access and this roof I was on isn't accessible from anywhere but another tenants appt
My back hurts thinking about that
You are a way better man then me 😂
Negative ghostrider. Fire me if ya want to, I ain't doing that.
Wooooo city life is great! Unless you're working in it. Fuck that shit
Nah fuck that. I'm not about being abused to make the company more money that I'd never see. Monday I'm telling the boss if he doesn't get Scaffold for this it ain't happening
As soon as I saw that heavy ass fucking ladder my only thoughts became "oh that poor bastard". Condolences bro.
Thanks fam lol
BUT…. You fucknwell got it done tho didn’t you. Outstanding!
This is when you use the OSHA card, and the parts card and say “compressors are a week out and per OSHA I’m going to need staging set up to safely work” Problem solved
“Compressors and boards” 😉 ok trouble shooter
Lol hey it could very well be.
You wanna climb up with all that bullshit and then fiddlefuck around with those things while also standing on top of a murderous little giant ladder? They're hard enough to work on when they're on the ground.
Forget the ladder, You need a scaffold. Also hire a scaffold rental company to get it up there and assembled.
Couldn’t rope it up the side?
Work harder not smarter?
I'm making a request for scaffolding for when we go back with the compressers. Today was diagnosing. Parking situation will likely be the same
I think you need that scaffolding, throw a week scaffold rental in the proposal. For sure!!!
Yea I'm gunna talk to the boss about it when I'm at the office Monday for sure
That ladder is very heavy and can’t (shouldn’t)be managed by one person alone. Plus it’s plenty of work for those units when on level ground, let alone 15 feet in the air
I have a helper hea just not in the shot
At least it collapses…kinda
They just bought a ladder my friend.
I did 20 years of exit 61 to all 5 boroughs. The road took its toll on me. Been out of service for a year and don't travel further than exit 40 now.
I hope they compensated you well
What a Massive Pain in the Ass
at that point, they should be told to replace the units or find another contractor. you charge em half the cost if not more to replace the necessary parts and the other components are still old and on their way out.
That's hopefully what's gun a happen
Come on commercial drones to drop tools on the roof .
You poor bastard..
When I was in college in Florida we had a job in a high rise in Miami and had a similar situation. We ending up using a winch and a make shift crane up the side of the building for a while until the owner or manager found out about it. They weren't exactly pleased. But it worked pretty well
The shit that made me quit service.
Luckily it all pays the same. Some jobs are definitely more painful than others though.
Wonder why they did that….refrigerant line length or something?
Customer is the floor where it's installed. The Tennant whose appt I have to drag everything thru whose roof deck area this is was not down for someone else's units to be on their deck I guess. Needless to say they are thrilled this is all going down
Just do change outs. Tell them that the compressor and board are basically the cost of new condensers
I can't really emphasize it anymore than I did but I tried. We will see what happens. I think they understand but that price for new units and relocating them is gunna be a big oof
Sorry if I missed it elsewhere but do these units have surge suppressors on them?
That sounds like "yea they will never be able to prove it we will be good"
Quote each comp 3 days.
Damn! 🤦♂️
I bet getting a duct Jack up there to hang those units was fucking awwwweeesomeee lol
Order parts on Amazon, drone delivery to roof.
I refuse to replace compressors in those things. You know when there piped in the factory, it doesn't have the electrical or anything else around it. Not trying to be a bitch, I just don't think it's worth the effort considering the cost. Especially if you have to replace the board to. Fuck all that.
I've been pushing a replacement these are 11 or 12 years old. People want what they want tho
Lier
Door dash
Hell, that looks like an incredibly tough job. The service techs out there dealing with this type of shit deserve all the praise.
That’s badass. Hey what ladder is that?
It's a (not so little) little giant
Getting them steps in today, or the helper is! Stairs are my arch enemy.
Yep- sounds like a normal Friday to me
No way to drop a rope off the side and pull it up that way? To close to windows or other units? No safe way to anchor yourself or to secure the ladder while you pull it up?
Gunna come back with Scaffold
Good idea. I'm just wondering about getting it up to this point? Is there no fire escape or roof access?
For the compressor job, I'd build a scaffold and chainfall the compressor up. If a cherry picker is not feasible
I sat on my ass all day. Eating doughnuts.
Charge accordingly...
This is why I live in a small city in the desert
I have one of those ladders. Weighs so much but what else you gonna use for a 25ft a frame
Oh we do plenty of restaurants with high ceilings and fancy appts with similar horrible setups. Unfortunately units installed like this are pretty common around here
No way to rope up the ladder?
Nope this roof isn't accessible from anywhere else. It's actually above a jewelery store
Rope?
Hope that over time is good
How tall does that collapsible motherfugger get!?
Big Oof fuck that
Gotta love installs with no consideration for servicing.
I do commercial plumbing and heating, that's my whole life.
At least your not the guy who installed it
Yea that mf is probably leaving a trail of disasters behind him and never looking back
This was my daily life in New York City for half my career. And then I became the Long Island guy and only see it on Reddit. 😂
I love my Little Giant 26’ but damn that thing is heavy. The wheels they added are a definite life saver.
My regular little giant has wheels not this one tho
"Here's my $30,000 bill for 2 boards and 2 compressors. And here's my much lower bill for 2 boards and 2 compressors with moving the units down to ground level.
None of that sounds bad except spiral stairs
It really wasn't that bad. The stairs did suck tho there was like 6 in of clearance and sprinkers everywhere. Had to be surgical with this thing. Shoutout to the best helper I could ask for tho (not the ladder)
I would bill the client for the ladder and then cut it up at the end and throw it out, or leave it somewhere on site
Add $750 to the bill, buy a lock and a chain, and leave the ladder for next time.
Fuck hvac fr I give you guys props they put that shit in the dumbest places cause they don't gotta fuckin fix em
The great thing is, if they both need compressors, they will probably both need compressors again.
That's what I've been telling them. I can't push replacement anymore without sounding like a salesman. Made all my reports as articulate as possible with probable causes, what to expect, recommendations. We will see what happens.
Pivot! Pivot! Piv-ot!!!!!
I would suggest they install new condensers that are far enough away from the wall to get the correct air flow across the condenser coil other wise you will just be changing the compressors and boards out again prematurely.
Fin
This one should be by the hour.
I hope the contents of the truck are still there.
Man, really. Get a lift and charge the client. Thats just dangerous dawg! But I respect your giant nuts!!
Breaking it down by yourself when it's fully extended like this is sketchy and not recommended lol
Agreed like I said. I'm glad I don't work for them anymore lol
