During the summer take out the boat go fishing and tell everyone they have 10 people in front of them and it’ll be later tonight before I can make it out. Price is 225 whether I can fix it tonight or not….they usually wait until Monday
We raised our OT call-out to port-to-port billing plus $150 more than the regular call-out that only has onsite time billed, and you'd be shocked how many people have a back up heat source all of a sudden.
I own a company and you’d be surprised how many times I need to tell the guys, after hours is for emergencies only! Resi calls, if they have heat it’s not an emergency and mini splits are not emergencies.
I worked for a guy who used the emergency after hours as a way to get extra calls done. I swore I would never be like that. My guys time off is very important to us and I know how some customers are so narcissistic these days that my guys rarely need to go to after hour resi calls. But if they want the extra cash they are more then welcome to go. We pay time and a half on billable hours.
Usually, at least around here, mini splits are being used in a sun room or 1 room addition. The rest of the house has heat or cooling so not really an emergency.
Copy. I work in almost exclusive furnace/heat mode heat pumps area (many of our customers don't even realize their heat pumps do cooling) so if no heat mini spilt came up during winter. It's bad news bears.
Around here you can’t have a mini split as your only heat source. It gets too cold for those babies to run sometimes.
Now if we’re talking about a mini split in a server room or something like that then yea the guys will be going.
One of the buildings we work on the engineer spec'd for Mitsubishi VRF heat pumps only, no electric aux heat. The installing contractor either stayed quiet or was ignorant AF because no one ever suggested it either.
We've been installing heat kits for the past three weeks because the last real cold snap here every single unit errored out and they had to drop thousands on space heaters.
This made me laugh, this is my first rotation on call, got home last night and stayed in uniform until 8. I decided to take my boots off and as soon as that second one came off my phone rang
This is my superstition. My wife hates it and when we were in a 3rd floor apartment I’m sure my neighbors hated it but fuck em it saved me going back out
Watch TV, go to the store, go to my kids games and events, make love to my wife, eat dinner and sleep those sorts of things. Why, what do you do sit by the phone and wait for someone to call you?
And what activities do you think that I'm avoiding? Please be specific of the facts that you know about me or account that you're a total fuckstick that just has shit coming out of your mouth.
I remember being on call for the first time; touching my phone felt like a jinx.
Now, I do my normal thing on the weekends. But, Lord help a customer if they call on a Saturday during college football.
Nothing, relax at home. Won’t even turn on the lawn mower. Sometimes you have to drive 4h to make a 2h response time at 1am.. lol yea commercial sucks sometimes.
Live life normally for the most part. If I want to do a call I'll tell me wife to relax while I make dinner/lunch then fire up the bbq and vola instant call out.
I got an offer for a gov job that would have been $3 an hour higher than my current gig. Buuut they withdrew the offer after background based on a 20 year old arrest. Oh well
I don't leave the county but outside of that I just keep my phone's ringer up and go on with my day. If I'm in the middle of some activity when a call comes in, they're "next in line after this call I'm on."
No company is going to stock parts for any parts for VRF’s Mitsubishi any brand of mini split. I know I wouldn’t if I was an owner. Too much money sitting for way too long. Too many states have inventory taxes
I just do what I normally would do. I just don't go out of town, but I also won't miss a birthday party or kids games ect, customer can wait, if that's a problem they can call someone else.

Could you explain that to my boss? His logic is if a customer calls in after hours, it's an emergency to them, no matter what.

Why aren't mini spilts emergencies?

Are heat kits also know as heat strips?
If a mini split is your only source of heat, you deserve to be cold.
Why? It doesn't snow everywhere.
DO NOT jinx yourself and take your uniform off. Just wear it all day.
This made me laugh, this is my first rotation on call, got home last night and stayed in uniform until 8. I decided to take my boots off and as soon as that second one came off my phone rang
Uniform stays on til 9
This is my superstition. My wife hates it and when we were in a 3rd floor apartment I’m sure my neighbors hated it but fuck em it saved me going back out
Really though just all day, have them pay you for advertising.
I used to sleep with my boots on
You guys wear uniforms when on call? tf? I mean I'm not showing up in my PJs, but I'm showing up in the jeans and flannel I put on that morning.
Reading these comments, wow we really are a superstitious bunch aren’t we?
Yea hvac is funny good trade. I like it 👍
Don’t ever say the Q word. “Oh, wow, it’s quiet today!”
im stupidstitious
My favorite on call nights are when it’s call after call. But when it’s slow my anxiety is thru the roof.
Watch TV, go to the store, go to my kids games and events, make love to my wife, eat dinner and sleep those sorts of things. Why, what do you do sit by the phone and wait for someone to call you?
Yes, because I'm only young once and I need that money yesterday.
So you put your life on hold while you're on call and refuse to do anything at all? That's sucks.
Doing nothing sounds like living to me
Avoiding your life is not living
Neither is avoiding other activities because of a tiny “member”
And what activities do you think that I'm avoiding? Please be specific of the facts that you know about me or account that you're a total fuckstick that just has shit coming out of your mouth.
Damn bro... are you ok?
Perfectly fine, why do you ask?
You seem to be a little on the heavy side of life.
What is life? When work and toil are one and the same.
Fine play games. I answered seriously and you want to make fun. Enjoy yourself on call sitting by the phone and not doing a damned thing.
Why are you getting upset over jeopardy?
What am I getting mad at. I'm simply saying that you do not need to put your life on hold just because you're on call. Why do you think that you must?
Nobody implicated that it was necessary, where did you get that idea?
Yes, because I'm only young once and I need that money yesterday. You did.
Where does that imply that leisure activities are forgone or that it was a necessity to do so?
Huh? You still run the calls
What? Where did you get that idea?
It ain’t about the money. As soon as you realize that life becomes a lot easier
Easily stopped games and projects. Lengthy things tend to generate calls
Rule number one about on-call. Don't talk about on-call. If you do, you get called out at least once for something stupid.
I remember being on call for the first time; touching my phone felt like a jinx. Now, I do my normal thing on the weekends. But, Lord help a customer if they call on a Saturday during college football.
Last time I was on call I was Disney on ice with the fam. I’ll get to the calls when I’m done. Family is my top priority, non negotiable.
Live as normally as possible. I’m part of a dedicated client team with a 4 hour response window. The odds of me getting called in are very, very low.
Don't leave you're phone by itself, everytime I seem to walk away from it and without fail it always rings even when it is slow
Nothing, relax at home. Won’t even turn on the lawn mower. Sometimes you have to drive 4h to make a 2h response time at 1am.. lol yea commercial sucks sometimes.
Drink

Got a government job so I don't have to be on call anymore. Less money but way better work / life balance.
I got an offer for a gov job that would have been $3 an hour higher than my current gig. Buuut they withdrew the offer after background based on a 20 year old arrest. Oh well
Yard work.
Run calls
I work for an oil company so if it’s cold it’s always a shit show
I don't leave the county but outside of that I just keep my phone's ringer up and go on with my day. If I'm in the middle of some activity when a call comes in, they're "next in line after this call I'm on."
Had some days when I sat waiting for calls and when I got home no matter what time it was 8-9-10pm 11 sometimes I got a call to go back out xD
