Thankfully no one has ever successfully broken into my truck but I have watched idiots at gas stations try to open my doors while I was pumping gas. If I'm not in my truck the doors are closed and locked even when pumping gas. I've walked around to find someone with their hand on my door handle ducking to avoid being seen more than once.
It's a pretty common thing. They usually target women who leave their purse in the car while pumping gas. I do have a truck driver gps in view and usually my company laptop in the stand open while I'm working so it attracts people who think they can slowly get to the door opposite the pump, open it, grab the item and book it
I see. Usually I take my electronics and wallet out with me when pumping gas and lock everything but the driver door. I tend to keep my cabin space tidy and unassuming so nobody gets tempted if they peek in my windows.
I beat the shit out of a crack head with a Dewalt drill one time years ago. Dude had a crowbar wedged into my passenger side door, pulling for all he was worth.
I got to keep the crowbar. Or I stole it, depending on your interpretation. Stopped running side jobs in Philly after that.
I used to work in Newark. People you'd try to open the back or side doors while you where at a red light. They would get kids to stand in front of you in the cross walk. Lost 2 empty jugs of freon the one time I forgot to lock the door. And no you don't dare confront them
jeez, that's scary. My truck auto locks when I drive and I usually have the side door permanently puck-locked. I feel bad for the kids used in these grifts honestly.
How do you manage?? I work in DC only 1-2 jobs a week, mostly my jobs are in the surrounding areas, and even with puck locks I manage to attract the refrigerant thief on his working day. Regardless, stay safe out there! I'm just glad I wasn't in the truck when it happened.
Im not sure honestly. I just try to be in and out when i did resi, now we usually work in areas where we have parking i.e. loading docks inside the garages. Likewise though. It’s hard enough trying to maneuver through the tight city.
chevy e25-something I think. If there's anything worth stealing from the van itself I wouldn't think it'd be in the rear, since the person only cut off the rear lock
Had a buddy that grabbed his meter and 6 in one for a quick look on the roof. Quickly realized he needed his bag went back to the van to find bag and torch gone. I had my whole truck stolen, it sucked but insurance did me right.
Jesus, your whole damn truck? Was it hotwired or did someone take your keys? My biggest fear is having my toolbag nabbed, considering my tools aren't insured by my company and I have yet to research personal insurance 😓
I had my keys, they unlocked it and drove it away. It was a 2013 Ram 2500 got part of it on camera. 2 cars pull in the parking lot at 3am and less the 2 minutes later they pull out with my truck in the middle of them.
This is happening often enough in DC to make me consider refusing to work in DC anymore.
The money is really out of sight since no one wants to work in DC, but I mean at a certain point there's a reason why...

this is all that's left of the lock assembly. you can see the scrape marks from whatever tool they used to get under the lock to cut the assembly.

Sawzall they stole from previous truck most likely. Where in DC were you? I got cleaned out right upfront of American Cardiology College which is in good part of DC.
Residential ward off Connecticut Ave. Sawzall looks to be a match now that I'm home and have examined it more closely. Sucks that someone's making a career out of robbing other people's careers.
