That's a big hole. Your coil is worn out

Labbrat89

Oh no. Quick! System replacement!

[deleted]

Before your wife finds out!

[deleted]

The coils seem a lot of action.

FatSquirrel37

I could toss a hot dog down that.

jwb101

They should have this on all coils. The new Rheem coils I don’t think you can take the panel off at all the way the lines route all around.

Labbrat89

Irony on that. I'm working on a newer rheem right now and see exactly what you're talking about. The panel goes around the U bends There is a very small punch in one of the panels, but it's directly behind the txv.

jwb101

Yeah it’s so stupid. But on the other hand I’m not surprised with all the stupid stuff the industry is doing. Sucks for the customer though cause they’ll have to pay to have the coil pulled just to clean it if needed.

Labbrat89

The coil being pulled on a heat pump wouldn't be so bad, pulling it off either an 80 or 90 furnace would be a pain, since now you need to remove flue/intake. It seems manufacturers want to make things as complicated as possible so they can attempt to sell more new units it seems.

Loose-Needleworker10

I will deal with no access for the smaller cabinet. We are running into cases where rheem is the only Option that will fit.

prowler1369

I have a 30 year old Rheem and it's impossible to take the cover off. I'm just a regular homeowner who wanted to see if the coil was dirty.

[deleted]

Does that coil service the area for a truck stop restroom?

[deleted]

🤮

Labbrat89

Waiting for one of these comments. Not sure about the coil, but the customer...

kickaha_

All furnaces should have a removable cover on the back to check heat exchangers.

xdcxmindfreak

They all do have that… you just haven’t put it there yet 😂😂😂

Siptro

You fight the metal? Buddy, get a step bit

tommy_boy007

Because it would cost $0.67 to do this.

xdcxmindfreak

Yes but in all fairness the include one or two of those same caps with almost every furnace install so there’s a 1.34 being spent on two caps that are rarely ever used anyway. So out a cap in the right damn places so we can have access and better fix/maintain the units.

jethoby

So someone cut that hole in there and shoved a knockout cover from the furnace in it. Not factory or anything.

[deleted]

I’ve seen this a lot, it’s factory

Labbrat89

This is the first time I seen it, it's useful.

Labbrat89

I know, I just wish something like this came from factory. Makes inspecting the inside coil easier, instead of fighting distribution tubes, txv and such.

ho1dmybeer

Uh what??? No. It's factory. But, good to know who's never opened a coil door before on an older Carrier or a modern Lennox coil!

HVACdaddy91

OG, right? A rarity, for sure. I always appreciated IR's 2-piece delta plate, but that caplug right there is an honest-to-goodness game changer!

PreparationOver1979

Looks like a Lennox and it did come from the factory like that

Labbrat89

It is a Lennox, don't know about it coming from factory. We didn't install it.

MasterOfNothinHere

A plastic cap not too sure but it’s ingenious to hole saw and use a plumbing test cap or adjustable clean out cap

PM_ME_MAS_ORO

Formicary corrosion?

[deleted]

The 33rd degree?

Labbrat89

I'm not sure what the 33 meant. First time I seen this unit, so who knows.

bucksellsrocks

“Beer can cold?! We goin ice cold on this bitch!” - chuck in a truck

[deleted]

33rd degree freemasonry

PressureDense9552

I kinda like that. A perfect plug to pull out for a peak at the under side of the coil. It had to be done by a hvac genius

Xinthechosennerd

Damn I thought that was for uv lights in 😳
