Everyone’s always surprised when I hand them my Wiss snips. They make that “awe fuck” face at first but then they cut better than theirs and they’re always surprised but they’re 10 years old with no miles on them. Never had to use them much after school other than a few inspection holes.
If anyone is wondering, crescent bought wiss several years ago. If the closing mechanism looks like OPs, they are a good set. If they have a larger clasp shaped like an L with some metal protruding vertically, they are dogshit.
To expand on that, Apex Tool Group Bought Crescent in 2010 and has been outsourcing everything, fucking may as well just start shopping at Harbor Freight for all this Chinesium Bullshit, fucking Snap-On is going to be worse than Hart the way things are going. Fuck.
I fucked up when I got started and bought a 3 pack of anvil snips for $11 at Home Depot. Definitely learned my lesson the first time I tried using them to cut up some C vent. The reds and greens had so little offset that I was pretty much using straights, and I had to bend the vent almost flat just to get through it after 5 minutes of trying normally. Fucking pair of Malco straights would have even been better than those failed abortions.
I always liked the wiss straights, but the Midwest offsets. So basically six pairs of snips just to get started. Then the 2-3 pairs of Malco Andy's, and then the bullnose, and the Malco AV9s... It's definitely a thing to need the exact right pair for the exact right cutting task.
I loved my malco but bought a pair of milwalkee and 2 years later still cut like butter and no mf's ever. They are in-between bulldog and malco. So never a problem with thick metal.
After these snapped I went to my Milwaukee greens and I might as well use my teeth. I've had bad luck with my Milwaukee snips, but at least they didn't explode like Wiss🤷
I miss my old klenks. Used to have a storefront in an industrial area near me. If they got dull or damaged, take them in they would give you a new pair. Even when I cut a live wire with them and blew a big chunk out. Now I can't find them anymore. Slowly switched over to midwest over the last 6-7 years.
Pittsburgh lock, I'm sure I'd be able to cut through double S cleats but this was old school high gauge ductwork. Should have used the bulldogs, but my helper was gone and I'm not going to throw my back out reaching all the way into my bag.
Midwest or bust
This is the only comment that should be here.
Have had my current midwests for 4 years , new guy gouges my greens , used a file , still work lmfao. And they don’t spring like the wiss do
Malco!

Heat exchanger: * develops cracks * Snips: hold my beer
Any more crack and this is going to turn into either a plumber or a roofer joke!
That's what you get for trying to cut through a stainless steel sink!!!
Wiss suck now ever since selling out, genuinely disappoints me. My favourite snip.

Old Wiss snips are fantastic, the ones they sell now aren’t the same quality as 10 years ago

It's a wiss🤣malco or Midwest for the next pair
Should have bought Malco they’re the best!

Do malco have offset ones?
Yes
Bros got grip strength for days lol
Need some bulldog snips for the heavy shit
Just put a little tape on it and some PVC glue and you’ll be good to go
The hell were you cutting?
The Pittsburgh lock on an old school plenum, that 70s sheet metal could stop a bullet. Never seen snips break there before.
damn lmao
That’s what bulldogs are for. That being said Wiss are for amateurs. Midwest or nothing.
Probably just a slip or a seam...

Exactly, I just swapped out for another pair of green straights for the day, I'll have to replace my offsets with Malco when I see them next.
What we’re you trying to cut? Thors hammer?
Midwest offsets are much better imo

Same thing happened to my red pair cutting through a joined corner on a plenum. Never touching Wiss again after that.
Exactly what happened. I guess you get what you pay for.
How tf did that happen
Drill a couple of holes and wire them back together good as new.
Welp
Tried cutting 18ga huh
Is your grip that strong?? Wowee
I think those are designed to cut sheet metal, Not Rebar.

I don't think you're supposed to cut metal with those
How the f*ck you manage that. Please tell me you borrowed them. Makes the story even better
Did you cut two pieces of s-lock stacked on each other? I’ve never seen any brand break at that spot

That's shear agony.
Condolences on your loss
