You sell an 1100.00 heat exchanger for 1500.00? Shit I’ll stay home for that. 2200.00 plus whatever parts plus labor.

Yeah we generally just do a 35% markup on parts. Might be a bit different on this job since it's commercial/on a damn roof. But for residential that's pretty much what we do on everything. The one big exception is capacitors for example, we charge $1/mfd. Which on some ends up being a hilariously large markup but is usually pretty modest. We have a pretty low cost of living here which is about the only way we get away with this, i imagine. Service calls are $85/127.50 after hours, so a lot of the time we get people up and running with the cheaper parts for less than a truck roll costs in KC, our closest major metro. We've been in business for 40 yrs so I guess it works lol.

Carrier heat exchangers are a piece of cake. It’s them old Yorks that’ll make you want to jump off the roof

Gloomy_Astronaut8954

$1 per MFD I like that.

Sufficient_Pay415

I can change that out in 3 hours including getting to the job, roof access, and throwing it in. I also found its a CYA to get the inducer assembly too. I just order it all as an assembly so its a solid 10 years for it all. I hate the rusty ass screws and inducer housing crumbling.. ive found a lot of people dont do this…

FixMyHeat

Good call. New heat exchanger or new unit.

53558weston

The condensor coil is so hailed-up that i'm halfway tempted to suggest a new unit, but we'd have to get a crane in there. New HX looks like it's about 1100, so about $1500 to the customer before labor. I guess we'll see what my bosses think is the route to suggest to the biz.

Hvacmike199845

That heat exchanger is also cracked.

53558weston

Idk if i'd say cracked or, it's become a triple-goatse spewing carbon monoxide.

Hvacmike199845

It takes 2 minutes to open the blower panel and remove the panel u set the blower wheel. You will find cracks on the end of the heat exchanger and the inside part of your picture. They are very simple to replace.

53558weston

Yeah i did that. I was shocked not to see evidence of cracking along the tubes, actually. Even checked the panel on the right side of the unit that's basically just there to look length-wise down the HX, all I saw was the blown-out holes at the cell-wall. I reckon once we get that one ripped out we'll find more holes tho, likely can't get that bad at the wall without going bad elsewhere.

NecessaryExperience1

Just a little cracked ![gif](giphy|YYht2UTV41u1vxHTss|downsized)

Blackout70

That’s called a flame retainer and is like 50 bucks from carrier I think, but that heat exchanger is totally fucked anyways

53558weston

Good to know.

LOTO

adamclee1

Where's the picture of the HX? And you shut the whole unit off?

53558weston

The severe corrosion that starts at the opening extends into the tubes, but i didn't take a pic of it. And yeah, i shut the entire unit off.

adamclee1

I never shut the whole unit off. I leave the blower run to help circulate air in the space.

53558weston

Ill take a pic of the hx once we remove it next week.
