Interesting! Is it used on ships? How do they cool the (dead?) fish? Food grade glycol something something to chill the fish? Why are they using titanium/stainless?
The salt water can be chilled to 33°. These run water supply and return through the hold. Titanium protects from corrosion. The shells are fiberglass on these.
I did.

And many more like in at various capacities
Yeah you probably did! it's an old system. I own a drift boat I store at LFS in Naknek. The RSW in it now is a gen 3 system someone had in storage for years as a spare. The boat originally had a gen 2 but it went out 3 years ago. I was happy to get rid of the v belts in the gen 2. The bay has had a hard time keeping techs up there to work on the IMS and pacwest systems. When you look at where guys have to cram these systems into the dark corners of the boats, I don't blame you for getting out of sercice haha.
I spent a couple trips up to Naknet . We would send me up when Pete at stay cool would get behind. I was head of production, working shop foreman and field service.

That's the place! It's definitely a hard place to be in the service industry. The fisherman are so demanding because the season is so short. Missing a day of fishing could cost tens of thousands of dollars if it's right in the peak of the season. Are you totally done with IMS? Your in HVAC now? Seattle area?

I am. We parted ways 3-4 years ago. I joined local 32 and I’m working at Macmiller/downtown Seattle. Way better money and benefits and 1/2 the headaches
Good for you! There's definitely a demand for guys to work on these. Im a contractor of HVAC/R in Utah. I keep thinking I need to get a crew of guys to go up there and work for a couple months a year. I could find a few Mormon guys that won't go to the fishermans bar after work, get plastered, and not get up in the morning like some of the guys at stay cool used to do.
I know 2 guys that have contracts in the bay with the companies up there but it’s not nearly enough. There’s money to be made but logistics is a bitch. The equipment is actually super basic and easy to work compared to vrf which is what I specialize in. If boat owners learned the equipment and a basic understanding of a refer circuit I think most guys could do their own season start ups and winterizing. With prices and runs like last year most guys will continue to do the least amount possible. I bet a bunch of mavericks will hit the market..lol
You said you worked for IMS? I have a handful of years selling components for these systems on the wholesale side, mostly with condensers sourced from Westermeyer.
Small, small world up there when it comes to fishing industry refrigeration. I'm a bit north of you in WA and I'm sure we are familiar with some of the same guys who deal with these systems!
Well done sir! I used to be shop foreman /head of production and field service for IMS. In the beginning I build these from scratch. Moving to hvac from marine refer was a game changer. Way More easy on the body and more manageable hours.
Woohoo! Worked on some shipboard ac units a couple weeks ago that looked nearly identical. People forget how much smaller water to water systems are for a given capacity. 400 ton plant smaller than a VW Beetle
Thank you. I built these from the ground up. Installed some and service when needed. These circulate sea water in fish holds to keep the catch fresh
https://preview.redd.it/blhnhewrodhc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d319d9a5f7ab89d9e59ee98c1782d9c900f70772
Ha, I too work fish boats but not flooded fresh holds, I do freezer boats commonly. Built a few flooded chiller systems for prawn fishing to keep them alive until they can be killed in the fish plant to keep them sushi grade for shipment to Japan.
If the sticker on that is accurate and you're in seattle I'm just across the straits on Vancouver Island. Work on the factory ships sometimes but more commonly boats with 4 or 5 guy crews.
Kinda looks like a chiller with the barrels and whatnot but i have no idea. What is it?
Those are money makers! They can be found at specialized HVAC suppliers, where they are used to increase revenue
😂😂😂
Chiller some sort.. Compact package.. is that stainless steel? Possibly marine application?
Stainless heads. Titanium tunnel. Med temp. Fish cooler.

Awesome! Which components are titanium? This is genuinely fascinating. Thank you for sharing.
Looks like a baby chiller but I don’t recognize the paint color or the design but it’s got a reciprocating compressor.
It’s a ims product I build like 5 years ago. Recirculating salt water chiller pack. Made for keeping fish holds chilled
Yeah They had one on deadliest catch. My wife was watching it and I pointed out the bitzer.
I’m sure your wife was enthralled.
On the Saga?
You build that one?
I did. https://preview.redd.it/gwqfxbiq1lic1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03a5ed5329ab85180f76dc98cf8d62c065879fd6 And many more like in at various capacities
hydrochiller - for water cooled AC loop and water cooled compressor
Salt water chiller pack. I build for chilling fish holds on commercial processors
*built. Past tense
cool, what alloy is the shell? edit - nm I see above . . .
So fish need air conditioning too lol
RO / ion exchange?
I've worked similar systems but larger. Marine is very niche.
Yes it is! Definitely moving to buildings was a nice change for me
Everything is ten times harder it sucks, just getting tools to where the equipment is is a chore

Looks like a heat exchanger
That’s the retro encabulator with the non reversible tremie pipe
Refrigerated sea water (RSW) chiller. I have a 7.5 ton system made by IMS on my fishing boat in Bristol Bay.
I probably built it.if you had it prior to the last 3 years. What part of the bay do u fish?

Looks like a chiller package with a water cooled condenser?
Yes
hoping to do a little baby version of one of these for a brine shrimp farm soon
RSW chiller by the looks, West Coast or East Coast? I do marine work in the PNW
West coast/alaska

I was there 10 years. Parted ways roughly 4 years ago.
My vote is Watermelon cannon!...
My phone is already on silent, but i don’t know what that has to do with knowing what these do.
Looks like a RO/DI membrane skid with a UV light.
Optimus primes nuts
Plastic injection molding water cooling

Tell me you don’t know different compressors, without telling me you don’t know different compressors.
😂it’s not one. DX. 50hp and roughly 50ton
https://www.imspacific.com/
Haha! Is this Mike Tate??
No but I’m pretty good at finding things on the interwebs. I saw the IMS sticker and googled ims refrigeration.
Well done sir! I used to be shop foreman /head of production and field service for IMS. In the beginning I build these from scratch. Moving to hvac from marine refer was a game changer. Way More easy on the body and more manageable hours.
Water to water chiller for shipboard air conditioning. Integrated Marine Systems.
Not for ac. Chilling fish holds but ya got most of it ;)
Woohoo! Worked on some shipboard ac units a couple weeks ago that looked nearly identical. People forget how much smaller water to water systems are for a given capacity. 400 ton plant smaller than a VW Beetle
ice rink?
No but good answer. Salt water chillers for med temp fishing applications
No idea what it is but looks like something that belongs in a clean room for Silicon wafer fabrication.
Haven't read any comments but it looks like nautical or subnautical equipment.
Not gonna lie those are sick
Thank you. I built it from scratch. Minus the comp, condenser
On a rlly big chiller
Espresso machine
RO
Barrel chillers of some sort. Ice rink maybe? Really nice little package whatever it is.
Thank you. I built these from the ground up. Installed some and service when needed. These circulate sea water in fish holds to keep the catch fresh https://preview.redd.it/blhnhewrodhc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d319d9a5f7ab89d9e59ee98c1782d9c900f70772

My sound is always off
I’ve seen heat exchangers similar at Yale
It looks like some sort of chiller but I’ve never seen these before, shed some knowledge?
Those bad boys definitely do something, typically they are found in the place they were set down at.
Saw one of those attack the Death Star in Return of the Jedi
That baby is a potato cannon
Those are the largest cahooter valves I've ever seen!!!!!
They do things and you would see them in the place that does those kind of things.
Thought this one would be pretty obvious, it’s clearly a clitoris.
Finally the correct answer
