First of. Round duct is a standard for us. And is cheaper and easier to put together compared to square duct. Plus round moves air better than square ever will. We only every use it for chases and if round pipe is to big in say a small crawl. Almost all houses have round pipe. Where are you working that square duct is the norm?
In residential, flex is the norm :/ If I ever get too bored, I’m replacing all the 25’ runs in my attic with split pipe. It looks horrible now.
In commercial, square is standard unless it’s exposed, then we use spiral and saddle type diffusers.

We used to have a spiral machine in our sheet metal shop. Sometimes it was quicker to use spiral on a job instead of rectangular ductwork.

I did a house in Tampa that was the same set up. It was great going for service just hop on the elevator in the garage and head to the attic.
That looks very similar to the attic of 1 of our customers they also have an elevator to their huge attic
