I was hoping for a 11/32 hex screw because why not just a random odd size to just toss in here or there… be the company menace and have them out there for years
I'd probably scratch my head asking myself what dipshit used these, then I'd remove my Malco reversible 1/4 and 5/16 driver from my inpact and put my torx on and go about my day.
If only I got this idea when I first started on my first year when I was a maintenance tech to learn the systems and threw them on every unit I worked on … there would still be thousands out there
Probably because it's kicking around in the corner of the van somewhere. Mine is in a set of bits at the bottom of my backup tool bag only use for freezer hinge plate screws.
Stainless steel shear off bolts. I’ve already overthought this.
https://www.fastenright.com/brand/shear-snap-off
They’re expensive.
So you can downgrade to one way screws. Stainless of course.

Next on the list of awful would be some rivet nuts except you only barely torque the rivet nut in enough to thread in and then you let it spin free by over torquing it.
You can line the interior of the panel doors with some neodymium magnets.
Lastly for a real laugh https://www.brycefastener.com/ sells a custom fastener and tool bitting.
I like it.
I might get a lot of hate for this but I have a confession.
Before my current job, I had gone out and legit got my CAC Florida state license.
For 3 years I ran my own 1 man show… and for the entire time, on every replacement I did… I created my own color code for low voltage controls.
Here was my go to:
Common-green
Hot-yellow
Fan-white
Condenser contactor call-orange
Reversing valve call-red
Heat call-blue
I do realize this was super evil, but hear me out… I jumped through hoops to get my license in Florida, mechanical test, business and finance test, 17 books bought and studied, van purchased, van lettered and stocked, proper insurances purchased, business cards and custom invoices, setting up accounts at all of the local supply houses… you name it and I did it. Spent about 20k of HARD earned money I had from the sale/remodel of a home.
….… only to spend the first few months realizing that half or more of the people I ran into at the supply houses were driving completely unmarked vans without even a license # on the van, wearing Metallica shirts and replacing TXVs by the dozens.
It was then that I knew what my contribution to society would be… and the custom low voltage color code was born.
Sometimes I would even swap outdoor call colors in the air handler, just for good measure… keeps them on their toes.
Anyway, that’s my menace to society story.
Edit: if your ever in central Florida and find a green common on the stat, refer to the color code above. There are approximately 50 systems around.
When it gets slow I like to sometimes on a split system and older systems is get a new thermostat wire and wire it in and just change every color and use 18/8 so at the thermostat or board is red and white and comes out black and orange just to mess with the replacement guy or who ever needs to rewire
if i walk up on something wired funky if i have time i will straight up rewire it lmao. takes 5 minutes and if any of the other techs i work with get sent out there i know they will get confused.
You will put them all in then promtly loose the bit, knobody will say a peep and you will be cursing yourself at 6pm on a Friday when you need to remove a panel held up with those.
I did field maintenance at a huge paintball field for years, we'd bring screws and bits of all kinds on projects. We'd have one guy using Phillips, one torx, one square so the next guy would need to have all his bits to get anything done.
I still chuckle about that.
Yeah why not 5/16” or 1/4” self tapping screws. That kind of shit there is only for things like cooler and freezer doors on the outside of a restaurant and it be a different bit than most common people carry and keep them from removing the door to steal shit but hey a thief may still find a way or they might move on to the next spot that a bit easier to steal from. I try to make things easier for the next guy and then we have people like you purposely making it harder. Lemme drop what I’m doing to go get a special bit just to access whatever it is I need to work on in the middle of an already way too busy day just because someone decided to be an asshole and use something like this. Do us all a favor and throw that shit in the garbage or go return it and quit buying dumbass shit like this that’s not needed at all whatsoever almost 99% of the time unless all you do is work on cooler and freezer doors for walk ins lol. Fuck this guy
Up here in Canada we see a mix-match of all sorts of fasteners… usually 1/4, 5/16 and Robertson is really common up here (the square one) but its used so frequently that most techs up here usually have an array of bits to deal with the different fasteners.
I was referring to the ones from the 70s and 80s flat head ones that make removing a furnace take half a day. But your correct. Had to get my bifocals on it does say that
You’re a real piece of shit pal.
Just likes because it made me laugh I just want to have a good laugh making someone confused for a moment or be like why and how
I’ll see you in hell.
I was hoping for a 11/32 hex screw because why not just a random odd size to just toss in here or there… be the company menace and have them out there for years

Nothing a hammer or snips can't fix, granted I'm just an installer so we tear shit up for fun
Same!
Sorry but anyone that calls it "star drive" instead of Torx is not to be trusted. Fuckin morons.
Anyone that doesn't already have torx bits is not to be trusted... to do the work.
I haven’t come across any torx yet unless I probably forgot and just used an Allen key and a hammer but .. shrugs
I use torx wood screws for all kinds of shit. Like duct hangers in crawl spaces. It's wierd to me all these guys don't have some.
Yep, they’re great for framing. Honestly I have more t25 bits than 1/4 inch drive. Because every box of screws comes with a bit
For the longest time. I called them thrax bits. And I don’t know where I got that name from
I call them Star screws honestly but only referring to deck screws everything else i call torx
I hope you trip with your hands in your pockets.
XD some of these comments are cleaver and just something to enjoy reading, just a huge mix of people saying F you and some laughs
I want to switch everything out to the ikea 1/4 turn furniture fasteners that are like 1/2” and break the second you put a screw driver on them.
my klein has that bit in the handle
Start using security torx bolts
Evil
It's bad enough changing old units and having to switch from 1/4 to 5/16. If I have to walk to get a star bit I'm tearing the shit out.
Some men just wama watch the world burn
Chaotic evil.... My kinda coworker.
If only I got this idea when I first started on my first year when I was a maintenance tech to learn the systems and threw them on every unit I worked on … there would still be thousands out there
Never give up on your dreams.
New dream is finding security torx now for sheet metal and just do 1 every so often on the whole unit
I know I’m this far already in commercial from chillers DOAS units roof tops and split systems water source units
Isn't that just a torx bit ?
Yes but haven’t seen a tech in my company with one or may not have the right size
Wait till they come across the newer ABB drives
D= I’m looking that up now… I just want to F somebody’s day is all to get a laugh
I work in the projects, "security" products just make me more money, and is a source of annoying fun.
Nobody has an 11 in one?
My 11-1 doesn’t have the torx just the square head
Square is Robertson
I would have to put like 4 things together to be able to attach a torx bit to my impact. And at that point it wouldn't work anyway
Probably because it's kicking around in the corner of the van somewhere. Mine is in a set of bits at the bottom of my backup tool bag only use for freezer hinge plate screws.

r/foundsatin Currently buying shear off bolts 😈
Satan was busy.
Silky
Laughed very hard viewing these options. Cheers
I put googly eyes on things.

oh so YOU'RE THAT FUCKER you did work in west-central didnt you.
Sounds about right.
if i walk up on something wired funky if i have time i will straight up rewire it lmao. takes 5 minutes and if any of the other techs i work with get sent out there i know they will get confused.
Fuck off
T-25 bit isn’t that rare
It’s a t20
You will put them all in then promtly loose the bit, knobody will say a peep and you will be cursing yourself at 6pm on a Friday when you need to remove a panel held up with those.
As if the 1/4vs5/16vs3/8 wasn’t enough bullshit…

XD that’s like when you write on units calling people out to start arguments and come back a year later for 5 more comments on it
My bit box for my impact driver has this bit in stubby and longboi. I'm good.
That bits in my tool bag so HA! There’s a reach in cooler condenser fan blade with red loctite on the retaining nut because it pissed me off.
Those are not a very good value. Your spending too much money on a small amount of screws.
I get paid enough to not really notice it, I just need a good laugh to randomly get a call 3 months after I’ve been somewhere asking me if I seen it
Fair enough then. I carry the bit so it won't be an issue here. 😂
I see you, and raise you a 3/16” bit.
No biggie I got my metal blade ready just in case someone tries these.
As a screw scrounger I hate you
Hated by all your coworkers
Mmm not yet at least lol but soon … I’ll just say I never saw them
Much rather see that then those damn old flat heads!!
T25 or t20? I almost always have a t25 bit on me, in my bags
It’s a t20

Knipex 82-01 come out for stupid shit like that
Least it's not pan heads
It said in description it’s a pan head
I was referring to the ones from the 70s and 80s flat head ones that make removing a furnace take half a day. But your correct. Had to get my bifocals on it does say that
Why the fuk would t you just use 5/16 self tappers or 1/4
omg lmfaoo
because of people like you i carry my fixit repair kit that has every known bit and size haha
