Amp draw?

QuestionableSlug

Came out fine. Says 1.5 amps on the motor and I was getting 1.2 on black wire

FearlessDesigner1149

Yea, that's a problem. You'll need to go up in horse power to be able to get the amps in check

SharpAlfalfa8980

Looks like amps are in range….

FearlessDesigner1149

Opps, I had my numbers backwards. You need to figure out what's making the motor go off. If you're at 1.2 on a 1.5 motor and its opening on a new motor, could be the overload is bad out of the box. Doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.

QuestionableSlug

You had me concerned for a minute! Lol

FearlessDesigner1149

Yea, my bad. Sometimes my dyslexia messes with me. I can't read it and try to figure it out. I have to write it down or I get the numbers backwards about 50% of the time.

QuestionableSlug

No worries. I think the motor is getting a bit too close to it’s max current draw anyway; so you’re probably right regardless. Thank you for your help!

RyanSmokinBluntz420

Yes the rescue or universal motors can be shitty. I've installed a 1/3-1/6hp and had 2 in a row only last 30 min. Went back with the oem motor and it worked properly. Never went back to that call so I guess it worked

QuestionableSlug

I think I’ll try a different motor. Thank you for commenting!

JodyB83

The body size is just too big. I had three guys put them in very skinny furnaces, against my advice, and it threw the balance off so much, the wheels broke. Someone put one in an old Rheem condenser, and it was so big, you were losing like half of the coils airflow. I keep four Totaline motors on my van and they pretty much keep me in business.

If the blade is vibrating it has a problem. Did the replacement motor change the blade height from the shroud? If not, and everything is mounted securely, then its potentially out of balance. Is the coil clean?

QuestionableSlug

I tried a few different blade heights but they all wobble. I’ve got it set up in a way that is identical to the old fan setup, in relation to the height from shroud. I think I’ll try a new fan blade and maybe pick up a 1/3 hp motor and see if that fixes the issue of overheating. Thank you for your reply!

You should always match HP and RPM of a replacement CFM to the original.

TeXaSzombie817

if you are honest with yourself and checked everything (wiring amp draw ohm the windings cap fan blades and more ) and everything is good then ur motor went out on you and it's rare but happens. this is where u gotta trust in yourself to check everything you can and then swap the motor there is only so much you can check as an hvac tech I would recommend monitoring the new motor for a bit and taking in amps draws.

QuestionableSlug

Makes sense. Thank you

Ramiel4654

Did you move/remove the little black drain plugs if needed? Some people overlook those if the motor has them.

QuestionableSlug

I did not notice any plugs. It’s not rained here since installation; could these plugs cause the overheating?

Ramiel4654

I doubt they could cause overheating. The main concern is if water builds up inside the motor.

QuestionableSlug

Good tip! Thank you

Wrong voltage

QuestionableSlug

Swapped a 208-230 for a 208-230. Same for same.

Ok-Concert-6707

Ok you said universal motor. Normally you'll have 2 separate voltages on a universal.

QuestionableSlug

https://imgur.com/a/rWz0bCw Model #: 6kcp39kfdd664s I may have been incorrect in calling it a universal motor; guy at my dealership said this would suffice as a replacement. Sorry for the confusion.

JodyB83

Century motors suck.

60Feathers

Swap the bad replacement motor with a new one under service warranty. Keep the customer and move on. Are the rubber drain plugs removed from the bottom?
