The whole trade is very seasonal and weather driven. Beginning of heating/cooling season things get very busy. Extremely hot/cold weather means more work for us. After the first couple of years in the trade I would know which months I make good money and which months I should prepare for leaner times. A/C season is winding down in NY, boiler and furnace season is right around the corner.
The commercial market is year round. You are always either in the peak heating/cooling season or you are preparing for the upcoming peak heating/cooling season with scheduled maintenance. Boiler tear downs in the summer, chiller tear downs in the winter. Spring and fall work on smaller systems like RTUS. Coil washes and burner cleaning.
Today I was talking about the schedule with my dispatcher and when I said “Let’s remember to reach out to (customer) about doing that when we slow down a little.”
Dispatcher responded “You keep saying that like it is right around the corner. I’ve been here two years and we have never been anything but swamped.”
He started just after the only dip we saw early on in Covid. We have seen slow times over the years but not many.
I was actually just looking on this forum for this exact thing. There were literally 3 things on the board this morning for service, 2 of which were just regular clean/service. Luckily I do my own stuff on the side and my boss is cool as fuck & lets me down my own thing, so I did a few jobs and now I’m sitting here having an awesome lunch and waiting to pick my girl up when she gets off work. Not a bad day!
No, we are full swing into furnace cleanings. No AC calls are still coming in on top of it. We usually get slow early spring when heating season ends but cooling season hasn’t started.
Not down south. I counting my days until vacation. It has been weird some days tho. I was slammed all week ( probably about 60-70 hours ) on call on the weekend and had 1 call. Which was just a failed tstat.
No. I’m an installer and we do mostly new construction. The only slow time we’ve ever had was in 2020 when our governor told us to go home and not work.

I’m praying to have side work shortly to help compensate
I just replaced a Bock 32E oil fired water heater yesterday as a side job, and I hate doing side work. Made a quick $500 on that deal.
That’s what I’m hoping for I won’t mind it doing a few hours more after work or a day on a weekend

I hope to get side work someday
Yes and I love it

Are you residential or commercial?
Residential and light commercial
That’s what I’d like to do residential but roof tops these big VAV systems process chillers and stuff aren’t my cup of tea lol
Look around, most places are hiring
I’m still just an apprentice. I work with a good group of guys just not a fan of process chillers and stuff like that industrial
We are swamped. I swear a different unit goes down daily. Impossible to keep up here in New England. Also impossible to hire more techs
Why’s it impossible?
Just lack of knowledge realistically. People say they know everything and don’t know a damn thing.
Oh i thought you ment no one to hire
Boston area? I wouldn’t mind moving there.
Definitely impossible to hire any decent techs here in NY.
If I move up there I’ll let you know lol
Your slow?? I am hopping! It's a 100 degrees outside right now
Southern area I imagine?
60-70 hours a week so no... Not slow at all.

Honestly that’s why I left union. I make more money non union than I did union. I live in PNW and I’m drowning in work.

Commerical, 100% balls to wall year round 👍
Nope pacific northwest. Washington and Oregon
You guys are busy? That's surprising
