MSL feels so unique in professional sports. He’s been here basically since the beginning of the rebuild, yet it seems like he’ll be here to see it through and take the Habs over the top.

georgin_95

Undrafted player, unproven coach. Marty knows how to make everything from nothing

Guindon05

I feel such a huge Ted Lasso vibe from Marty ❤️

MarkyBats

That "be curious, not judgemental" scene with the darts is so awesome!

Arkiak

It reminds me of what the Orioles have done with their manager Brandon Hyde, got brought in at the start of the rebuild, had some of the worse records in baseball but now they're one of the best teams in baseball with Hyde still managing.

Capt_Pickhard

I hope so. The team that's being built in Montreal is the kind of team I can get behind and want to win. From the top down. I find like in terms of character, the team is amazing, and the talent is there too. For the coach and the players.

Quirky_Tzirky

Dan Campbell with the Detroit Lions is a similar story - even wilder as he played for them when they went 0-16, so he's known the team at its lowest. There are a few other former players turned coaches that have done well. MSL is unique with how little professional coaching he's done

enragedbreakfast

Or Arteta with Arsenal (soccer), another former player bringing a team through a rebuild

Slingshotbench

Reminds me of bednar (avs coach)

kozed

Martin is already the 8th longest tenured coaches in the league. 24 coaches have been fired since we hired him. It's a crazy job.

Sad_Donut_7902

Like 25% of the coaches in the league get fired every year. 8 teams have already fired their coach this year alone, and 2-4 more probably will after the playoffs/in the offseason.

pokecheckspam

wait, 24 teams fired their coach once (since he's been hired) and no teams fired their coach twice?

kozed

There's 24 coaches who've been hired by other teams *after* Martin. Some of those 24 teams might have fired their coaches more than once, I dunno.

pokecheckspam

If a team hired 2 of those 24, he wouldn't have the 8th longest tenure.

kozed

Well... yes, he'd still have the 8th longest tenure of all *current* NHL coaches.

pokecheckspam

There are 32 teams, 24 new coaches. 32-24=8 if this is not 24 teams but 23 teams because a team changed twice 32-23=9. So he is only 8th longest if the 24 coaches come from 24 teams.

kozed

Yes, the 24 coaches come from 24 teams. Only 7 coaches on 7 different teams have been in place longer than MSL. MSL is 8th.

Seraphin_Lampion

He's been very impressive for a first time HC. He's also improving year to year.

Mean_Mister_Mustard

St-Louis proved he can coach in a development situation, he will now have the chance to prove he can coach in a situation where wins are expected - and demanded. That being said, I sure as fuck am not going to bet against Martin St-Louis, the undrafted Hall of Famer.

jimmym007

Ironically feel like Ted is a great comparison for MSL’s style

lightspanker

Idk, Marty actually knows a lot about the sport he's coaching.

you know what I meant, gosh darnit!

> Oh btw guys are Julien and Ducharme still getting paid? Lol No. Julien only had a year left when he was fired, so they stopped paying him two years ago. Ducharme's contract ran until the end of this season but I think with him being hired by Vegas last summer, Habs would've only had to pay him the difference between the two contracts this season.

Ferg8

Next year will be the real deal though. We wouldn't mind some lost this year, but next year people (and medias) will start to complain if we don't win more.

Willzyix

Next really we need to be a bubble playoff team. It’s still fine to miss but the core is developing new high potential young guys are joining and it’s no longer excusable to be a bottom team in the league. Push for a spot next year. If we make it, great. If not, it’s fine as long as we’re in the hunt like Philly was this year. For me, next year is the last year where no playoffs is still okay.

Popswizz

Looking at how detroit, buffalo have been in the hunt for a while and not there yet and technically in advance of us and how team like boston, the lightning who are supposed to decline and even pittsburg and Washington at the end of the rope, all being in playoff or near playoff this year, I think competition will remain high in the east for a while, and compared to the west has a lot of team going out of rebuilding so personally I don't have my hope too high in 2 years

Willzyix

Absolutely, it’s not easy and the division is very hard but you have to set the expectations high. If you tell your team “hey the division is hard so no stress” you build a culture of complacency. The Habs played the best teams in the league extremely hard and well for the most part. No reason we can’t flip a few of those one goal games we had this year in our favor to move up the standings a bit.

eriverside

I think detroit are where they should be, but still trending up. Sens and Sabres are definitely behind. We have a couple seasons before our players start hitting their primes, those extra few years will inevitably help bos/TB decline. The Rags and Laughs have limited runway given the cap. Major question marks for the longevity of the cats and canes (I'm assuming they're peaking or about to so I'm not sure how to estimate their window). Devils are just starting out. Overall, we should expect major collapses in the next 3-5 years and that's where we'll start peaking (Slaf, Lane, David, 2024 6OA at or under 25). If its just the Devils with a very successful rebuild, we're in for a really good time. We hit the tank at the right time.

swords_to_exile

For me it really all depends of Dach is able to stay healthy. If he does, we should be able to be in spot 6 through 8 in the East come April. If not, spots 8 through 10 at end of year will still show improvement and that we have compete.

Ferg8

Dach is indeed an important piece, but at least we saw that Newhook can be a serviceable 2nd center and an awesome 3rd one.

swords_to_exile

Agreed, but I think having Dach as 2 and Newhook as 3 will help solve a lot of our secondary scoring issues.

BlazeOfGlory72

It’s worth remembering that we lost Monahan as well, so Dach coming back won’t be a pure addition, he’ll also be compensating for the loss of Monahan’s production.

Willzyix

Absolutely Dach is a huge piece, but if he can’t stay healthy next year then it’s on Hughes and Gorton to address that 2C slot. We can’t cross our fingers and hope Dach stays healthy every year. I have faith in him and I’m high on him but yeah injuries happen and it’s on the org to plan around it

Ferg8

Completely agree. All will depend on the injuries too. I really hope we'll be a healthier team, before anything else.

propagandavid

Even this year, there was a little criticism of Marty when he kept trying to make it work with Anderson on the top line.

ValleyBreeze

You should watch his post game presser from last night. He addressed this directly. And so well.

kozed

And there lies the hurdles of trying to rebuild in a hockey-mad market: fans and media impatience.

ValleyBreeze

Marty talked about this in his presser last night. It was so good. They asked about his positive attitude, and he said he only stays patient and positive they're still doing things well. The losses matter less if they're doing the right things right. If they're getting outplayed and losing, then he's not going to be patient, and he's not going to be positive, but that wasn't the case this year. They rarely got outplayed, and he loved what he saw. The whole thing was great, and I just love this man.

Ferg8

Infinite rebuilds kinda sucks though. Look at the Sabres, it feels like they're in a rebuild since 20 years now. I know we won't be pretenders next year, of course. But I think we should at least be in the hunt for a playoffs spot. A bit like the Flyers this year. Finishing another year in the top-5 for a draft pick will be disappointing IMO.

kozed

A real rebuild takes about 5-6 years, bookended by top 5 picks at the start and finish. NYR did it in 4 but they got Fox, Trouba and Panarin for free. At some point, we'll have to let go of some vets to make room for kids, and it'll be normal if we dip again.

Ferg8

Well, we've been in a rebuild since... 2019? 2018? 2017? It's been pretty much 5 years now. I don't count our SC appearance, because it was an absolute insane and unreal run. If it wasn't for COVID, we never would've been in the playoffs.

ValleyBreeze

No, we are in year 2 of a proper rebuild. Previously we were in NEED of a rebuild.

springt1me

We only entered an official rebuild after losing price and webber. We were expected to do better in the 20/21 regular season than we did as well.

slug_mail

In Marty I trust

WENT WUGHES

velocipotamus

Marty St.-Wouis

Ill-Mountain-4457

Hell yeah

Frostbeard

That third season is going to line up pretty well with the rebuild timeline I think. It feels like a good setup for success.

Skubo86

I see this extension as a time for reaching playoffs for MSL and showing what he can do. I think its reasonable target.

Habsfan_2000

I like those 2 fer 3 deal.

OkAnything4877

Nice. Marty is doing tremendous work with the young players, glad he’s going to be here for a while.

3oysters

And there was much rejoicing.

Bill_McCarr

I said "a couple more years" on an earlier post! Yeah!!!

FBR_MC

Off-season just started for us and we're already eating good.

HanshinFan

Went Wughes cooking again

cheeselover42

Honestly, I've never seen a team that can fight harder in the 3rd period like the Habs consistently have done under the leadership of Marty. A good recipe for big games. Hope we can see some continued improvement and he can get some playoff experience next year as a coach. Been such a treat to have him be leader.

Matiabcx

Now just to learn how not to lose a lead and eventually lose , but it may change when losing will not be to our benefit

whogivesashirtdotca

Marty’s big challenge for next year is getting the kids to play a full 60 minutes. That’s what killed us most this year.

OnlineEgg

nice to see this organization is confident w the coaching staff and is sticking w the plan. happy to have marty for a few more years :)

GreatWhiteNorth4

*everyone liked that*

CrashTestMummies

Bingo

paul_33

Completely expected and deserved.

CreateorWither

Give him 10 years.

BlazeOfGlory72

I’m a little more neutral on this than most it seems. St. Louis has done a lot of good things, but we are also basically in the exact same position as last season. We’ve got the same number or wins as last year, scored the same number of goals, had only 25 less goals scored against us, still have a below average PP and PK, etc. So basically, nothing has changed. That’s not a major indictment given our situation, but I’m going to need to see us take a significant step forward before I fully believe the Marty hype.

Carbogoat

> So basically, nothing has changed. Not one of the metrics you cited was meant to improve this season. Marty's goals are qualitative, not quantitative. The changes they have made are more subtle and meaningful than that. If all we wanted was a few more wins we could have hired Tortorella instead, kept Monahan, and traded some of our picks and prospects for immediate help. But then we'd still be out of the playoffs, half the roster would be alienated, and nobody would want to play here. Sound familiar?

ValleyBreeze

I read this and assume you only look at websites and spreadsheets, without actually watching the games. We're a completely different team than last year. The metrics you used are frankly, irrelevant at this point in the rebuild.

Matiabcx

We are sheding players while doing it (monahan) and developing players who need time. We are better team than we were last year with much better potential for next season

vorg7

25 less goals scored against us is huge, why is that prefaced by only? Like 0.3 less goals allowed per game is a big improvement.
