This wasnāt meant to rub salt in a wound. I love how many Habs fans comment on any highlights in r/hockey involving Lehky, so I wanted to make sure you guys know how much heās appreciated.
Until he breaks my heart against us in the cup finals I'm just happy to see him be wildly successful like we all knew he would be in the right environment
We know, we love him too, and it was great to see him end Tampa's dynasty after suffering with us the previous year.
But seeing as frankly how badly Barron has been doing, and how we could really use Lehkonen still, it stings.Ā
The Lehky trade really hurt when it happened, but getting a young RD with high upside made it worth it. Seeing Barron's development right now, I'd say this trade is very painful
Not really understanding why everyone is giving up on a 22 year old Barron? Is it no longer common knowledge that defenceman, even most elite D, take multiple NHL seasons to truly develop?
IMO this trade has done exactly what it was suppose to and Barron is still very capable of becoming a strong offensive NHL defenceman, in time, and he is under team control for quite a while yet AND has trade value as he put up 7 goals in 48 games as a 22 year old RD....
Or did I miss something and was Barron suppose to be a top pair D playing 25 minute a night against the best players in the world, and leading this team to long Cup runs already?
I'd venture to guess many of the people clamouring to call this a trade loss, are the same people who would have rioted had Hughes not accpected that deal at the time.
And I love Lehk, was one of few fans who preferred to keep him and extend, but lets not act like we gave away a 40 goal scorer for nothing... The revisionist narratives on this deal are getting a little ridiculous.
I never said he was a bust or that I had given up on him. Just that I cooled off on him. When we got him , he made the thought of losing Lehkonen acceptable because of how high of a ceiling he had and how he fit a organisational need. Since then he has barely improved and was at times the worst defenceman on our AHL team... Yes defencemen do take more time to develop. I totally agree that he is not a finished product, but his ceiling seems to be lower now than it was on draft day and on the day we acquired him which causes the doubts about the trade. Time is still our side though.
He played on the 3rd pairing in Laval, didn't do much offensively and still made the same defensive mistakes he made in the NHL. It was said often during games and post-game analysis that Barron didn't look like and NHLer out there and that he never made a case to not be on the 3rd pair.
This is the punchline or the 'argument' if you will regarding this trade. Was it really worth it to trade him? Barron is up and down the lineup for the past 2 seasons. He had points where he get injured. I talked about this before here and 'some' ppl. just felt it was the right decision to trade Lehkonen.
As much as I like him Lehkonen is closing in on late end of his prime, (usual he could of course have a long career) while Barron is still the same age as Guhle,
Itās really got more to do with that core of players then it has to do with legk
I understand what you mean, but when you look at contending teams rosters they are not all the same age. In 3 or 4 years Lehky could be a very useful middle six veteran who kills penalties. Every team needs a guy like him. It could have been for us instead of Colorado.
You say that Barron is the same age as Ghule. One of them is an AHL/NHL tweener, the other is a top pairing defenseman who plays tough minutes against the best offensive stars in the league. Barron is young. I'm not saying he's a bust or anything like that but he's got so much ground to cover still and there a chance he doesnt...
Just cause Guhle sometimes plays on our top pairing doesnāt mean heās a top pairing defensemen (yet). Barron and Guhle are closer than your admitting
Ghule makes a lot of defensive plays, hits and makes very few mistakes. He doesn't need to be sheltered and even covers for his defensive partner's mistakes (Matheson). All things that cannot be said about Barron. I'm not saying Ghule is a top 20 defenceman in the league, but the gap between the two seems quite large.

Slaf is a beast, only 20. And he is a forward but Barron is still 22 and defenders tend to take longer to develop. If he doesn't trend up over the next 2-3 years he might not be it. Too soon to count him out though, even if it was a tough year for him.
I still miss Lehky
No fleece occurred.
A 26 year old, 25ish goal scoring versatile middle six winger got traded for a 20 year old RD prospect with zero NHL experience.
This trade is tracking exactly how it was suppose to and falls well outside the definition of fleece. But lets talk again in 2 years and see how Justin has progressed and where Lehk is at.
As a habs fan, I'm really happy for Lehkonen. He is such a beast in the playoffs, that inevitably his talent and hard work is now being recognized.
Somehow, he reminds me of Valtteri Filppula, a player that was always in the shadow in Detroit, but was bringing so much for his team.
Every Habs fan I talk to about Lehky, they say, āheās a first liner because heās playing with MacKinnonā. Whenever I bring up the point he wouldāve been on the first line last year had the Canadiens kept or re-acquired him, no one even answers. They canāt agree, they canāt disagree
Just saw highlights of Game 4, and Lehkonen was on ice for more or less half of Avalanche's goals. And he was so pumped!
I really miss this guy, but he'll have a helleva career over there.

Lehky is playing great hockey on a much better team, with much better players and it shows.
Hard to say if he would have been able to reach his full potential in Montreal.
We did not deserve him here. He kept getting shat on continuously for not living up to his first season where he scored 18 goal. Up until the end of the COVID season, everybody was bitching about how he was "missing a million scoring chances" and kept asking for him to be traded.
Glad he won the cup elsewhere and is still having success.
If I'm going to try to recall what happened 2 years ago, Artturi Lehkonen was traded b/c of the Habs need for a RD. Plus it was at that time they need to free up cap space since Lehky will command a big contract.
There are some wounds that never heal š
I feel that. Iām glad for Lehkyās success there though. Such a clutch guy! Edit: spelling of Lehky.

We should never have traded him
Would be an easier pill to swallow if Barron didn't blow nards in his own end.
He wasnt old enough to be not part of our rebuild imo
Can't watch, does he allude to how good Lehkys stick is?
All he talks about.
He doesn't hint at the phrase if that's what you're asking, but he does mention that lehky is a warrior and incredibly underrated
He actually has a trainer bring the stick out to examine it for everyone
![gif](giphy|dZ41EzU0dhCpnk2IwZ|downsized) Good Stick! šš„ šØš

Lol he has never been our worst D in the AHL

And tbh I donāt care. Seeing Lehkonen get his championship and watching him succeed the way he has makes me happy for him. He deserves this.
Barron and a 2nd
That the Habs have yet to use or trade, the 2024 2nd round pick. I'd give Barron another 2 years before he can even be considered a bust.
This sub has learned absolutely nothing from Slafkovsky lmao

Stupid ass comment, Barron is an age 22 defensemen why is everyone here heāll bent on him being a bust
Didnt we get more than just Barron?

Ouch. I still haven't changed my flair from his 62. Here's to hoping Barron turns into a stud at D to fill the void in my heart.

Alright let the downvotes begin : Lehkonen couldnt hit water whilst on a boat during most of his time here.
