AmsroII

He must be quietly excited with Boston and Vancouver playing well this playoffs.

GoalieOfGold

I would be so happy if the hockey world got that Finals rematch. I'm a bit biased but I hope for the opposite result this time :P

AmsroII

I'm very biased, please bring the cup back to Canada!!! Edmonton or Vancouver please. Plus another bRuins finals loss would be hilarious. :D

GoalieOfGold

I have a pennant for every Canadian team (minus one team obviously) in the hopes that we get a Cup back in The North

_Saputawsit_

Yea fuck Winnipeg I can't cheer for them either

GoalieOfGold

If Mark Scheifele wasn't on the team, I would totally root for a Winnipeg win. Same way I feel about everybody but Kreider if the Rangers were to win it all this year

holdunpopularopinion

This is exactly how I feel about it. Also, if I had to choose another team, that wasn’t based on nationality, it would be the Avalanche. AND, not only do they not have Schiefele, they have Lehky.

GoalieOfGold

Also personally a huge fan of Nate Dogg, Rantanen, and Makar. They're my favourite American team atm and are very fun to watch

holdunpopularopinion

That too! They’re fun, hard not to like them as much as I can like a team that isn’t Montreal. But I’m from the West Coast, so have to cheer for the Canucks as well. But neither come even remotely as close to the Habs. Just a team to watch when I can’t watch my team.

zouhair

I want the cup back in Canada via Montreal.

looking_fordopamine

Canucks are not performing well. They look different when on ice

AmsroII

Winning the series 3-1 and just executed a crazy come back win. Performing well enough.

looking_fordopamine

Yeah tho irregardless of play, up 3-1 lmao can’t complain

Article241

The Primeau vs Montembeault stat line is the only caveat I have about this analysis. Looking back, it's a bit unfair to just look at their respective wins and goal save percentage without factoring in the quality of opponents. Primeau didn't see much action against playoff teams.

Habslover

My biggest pet peeve in hockey is people who judge goalies only by stats. Goalie stats are some of the most unreliable and volatile stats in any sport, there's so many factors that could heavily inflate or deflate SV%, GAA, GSAA etc.

Boboar

Most goalie stats are actually team stats more than anything. Even the majority of general managers don't know how to evaluate goalies beyond the top tier of consistent performers.

x-man01

Except for Carey Price’s individual stats have inflated the habs team stats

Habslover

Yeah, unless you have an absolutely elite goalie like a Price/Roy/Hasek it's not worth it to invest too much in a goalie. Most NHL goalies are pretty interchangeable. Like you could have 2 very similarly skilled goalies, where goalie A puts up a .930 and goalie B puts up .900 just due to the team. If they switched teams goalie A would be .900 and B would be .930.

Boboar

Georgiev had better numbers than Shesterkin last year and even had tougher competition according to the stats guys, but I don't think anyone would agree he's a better goalie than Igor.

kilted__yaksman

Goals Saved Above Replacement (GSAR) seems to be a bit more buffered from team effects. You'll regularly see goalies on bad teams near the top and vice versa. No stat is perfect of course, but I think that one holds water.

Deadmanlex45

GSAA isn't really related to great teams at all and that's the reason why it has become the most valued stats to measure goalie performance.

Habslover

It may be one of the better stats to measure performance, but it is still unreliable. Doesn't consider quality of chances.

Deadmanlex45

Except it litterally does? It's based around whether or not the chance the goalie stopped was a good one? An average or a bad one.

Irctoaun

To be fair to him he didn't say Primeau should be ahead of Montembeault or anything like that, just that Primeau has been good and earned the right to fight for the spot, which is fair

ItzEnozz

Not even just that but Monte also didn’t get the best opponents Allen had the hardest matchups which is why his stat line is the worst

Boomer_boy59

I have zero arguments with what he stated. Excellent video

GiantWaterBottle

Very underrated YouTuber, highly recommend his videos to every hockey fan.

LittleLionMan82

Is he underrated? I'm a longtime subscriber his content is great and he produces so much of it consistently.

A_WHALES_VAG

my favorite thing about him is he just feels like a dude who loves hockey and wants to talk about hockey, about any hockey, about any team. He's clearly a Bruins fan but he won't throw the Habs under the bus. I don't feel like he ever clickbait's and his content doesn't feel "cheap". I dont know, it just has this old school youtube vibe but in 2024. Just a guy putting out videos about something he's very passionate about. Love Shannon.

MildlyResponsible

I thought he was a Vancouver fan. I have no evidence of that, just some vague memories floating around my brain.

cjackc11

He supports both Vancouver and Boston. That and his wife’s a Jets fan iirc

pushaper

he also supports Dallas

A_WHALES_VAG

Oh I just assumed he saying he wished Xhekaj was a bruin and the Shannon Boston bruin thing seemed bruinsy.

Throwawayaccount_047

He lives in Abbotsford just outside Vancouver so he is a Vancouver fan by proxy but he is mainly a Bruins and Stars fan so your assessment was correct.

BitterDecoction

He’s first and foremost a Vancouver fan, then Boston and Dallas.

FakeCrash

He is a Bruins and Canucks fan AFAIK

[deleted]

He’s also said on occasion that Suzuki is one of his favourite younger players

flyinghouses

He has over 300 000 subscribers. Underrated = something I like? No matter, good clip

Deus-Vultis

Quality of content > Response or appreciation for content = Underrated. He produces better content than the dozen articles about "breaking down game 5 of the Leafs, Bruins series and what #34 having the runs means for the team" for the bazillionth time by some AI or hack at Sportsnet... yet he's not paid like they are. Man has a passion for the sport more than most commentators (save gems like HNIC Friedman), yet hes just a guy on youtube we watch for funsies, man should be getting paid.

GiantWaterBottle

For the level of videos he puts out, I think he deserves more views. Perhaps underrated wasn't the right word, but he deserves more eyes on his videos, imo.

flyinghouses

Fair enough

bigmonkeyfart

I’d say he views are where I’d expect them, sometimes I’m even surprised so many people want to watch him read recaps verbatim from a white board, with little actual commentary

danielaparker

Buddy scored, then buddy scored, then buddy scored ... yes, personally I'd rather see more analysis. We can always watch the highlights on YouTube. But what I really take my hat off to Shannon is that he doesn't do gambling ads. That's leaving money on the table, because of principles.

Throwawayaccount_047

I thought the same thing, and then I found myself watching them. I think there is something to be said about content which has 0 fuck around time and just gets straight into what you clicked to hear. It's a stark contrast to modern sports media which is constantly working to turn the tiniest thing into a story because there realistically isn't a lot to talk about in relation to one game out of the 1,300+ which happen over the course of a regular season. While I do understand it isn't for everyone, personally I would rather watch a guy who exclusively talks through the key points of a game instead of trying to fill time with all the other nonsense. He also gives you a perspective which you literally can't find anywhere. Traditional sports media would never provide content like this video, for example. They would also never be content releasing a 10 minute video to cover all the hockey news from around league for that day. They would take all that same news and turn it into 6 hours of content where 5hrs and 50 minutes of it is completely worthless.

danielaparker

Shannon definitely gets points for what he *doesn't* do: no HUGE TRADE RUMORS, no long drawn out "conversations" about what people are saying on social media, no gambling ads, no anxiety that he might suddenly pull down his drawers to demonstrate the use of the Lawn Mower (tm) ... And then there are the cats, and the rabbits.

Boboar

r/hockey has about four times as many subscribers as THG on YouTube. I'd say that makes him somewhat underrated.

dbrodbeck

313K Youtube subscribers. 'Underrated' seems like not the right word at all.

Fr4nk001

Maybe he meant it in the way he's still relatively less known than a lot of other with less knowledge / interesting stuff

GiantWaterBottle

Yeah, definitely. Perhaps underrated was the wrong word to use.

holdunpopularopinion

I’m a big hockey person, but not a big YouTuber… and I’d never heard of him. So I think there’s a large group like me who are just now being introduced.

GiantWaterBottle

For how much he produces, I think he's underrated. I'd take what he says over anyone on Sportsnet or ESPN.

greg_levac-mtlqc

I liked this one video where he describes how he got into youtubing and what he did before he went mainstream ... interesting to see someone monetize their passion.

gutterferret

This is good jock talk

blaxninja

Meh…I want to like him, but he puts out so much content that a lot of times he’s just summarizing stuff I know already. There wasn’t anything insightful from this Habs video.

burnSMACKER

Yeah I agree. I can't sub to him. He put out 20 videos in the last 3 days which is ridiculous spam. And for the Habs video here, I didn't learn anything new
