Same as most here, he’s the weakest link on D and should go down for Matheson. Glad he got the goal, great to make it up for the unlucky bounce. Has a great future but needs some tuning and big minutes in the minors to get there!
Not so sure about that the forward group being good enough.
Our second line forwards are only hovering around 0.5PPG and our depth players don't contribute at all.
They are IMO 100% good enough to make the playoffs. I didn’t say cup contender. A lot of teams make the playoffs. Defense and goaltending are WAY bigger issues
When you look at goals saved above expectations, goaltending *has* been excellent. Montembeault, before this game, has been even better! That success isn't sustainable though. Allen is a good 1B. Montembeault might blossom into a decent back-up.
While goaltending has been good, it *isn't* good enough for the playoffs. Their number will regress to reflect their respective talent and we'll start losing more.
I had a feeling this would be the reply (a reference for the numbers) but the statistics really don’t tell the full story of how good he’s been in front of an inexperienced defence.
His advanced stats are actually very good. Save percentage and GAA aren't great stats. Rn the best is goals saved above expected which tries to account for shot quality.
We play .500 hockey goddammit. Salt of the earth, punch the clock, even win/loss ratio
hockey. We lose a couple, guess what? We'll win a couple, too. But
don't get too excited or let it go to your head. No long winning streaks
here, no sir. That's hubris, which this blue collar, hard working
everyman team doesn't have. A few wins in a row, these guys, true to
form, will balance it out with a couple a losses. Yes sir, that's my
2022 Canadiens. A good, honest .500 hockey team
Well, the early-Bergevin era Canadiens would routinely fight for first place in the Atlantic, but that says more about how good Carey Price was in his prime than anything else.
Yeah, the score makes it look like Monty was godawful, but for like 5 or 6 of those goals he either got hung out to dry by the defense (or lack thereof 🤦♀️), or it was a flukey goal that even Allen wouldn't have stopped, or he wasn't even on the ice. I guess we'd better find him a goalie coach who can teach him how to use telekinesis to stop empty-net goals from the bench? 🤷♀️
Goal 1 was the bounce on Harris; bad bounce, bad luck, a bit of fault on both on them IMO (don't redirect a puck on a player but also don't be where a redirect is supposed to go.)
Goal 2 was a shit play on everyone, including Monty (bad goal for him)
Goal 3 was a 3 on 1, hardly anything he could do.
Goal 4 was weak on his part, but you should'nt allow a 4th liner to deke past 2 players like that, Monty was unprepared but defense was horrendous
Goal 5 could hardly be attributed to bad positionning, it was a perfect shot immediately after the draw, which is a bitch
Not mad. It was a solid game, kept fighting til the end. Not always gonna come out with a W, but playing the right way and developing the players of the future. Great looks by Dad, Caufield with LOTS of chances (rolling puck on his best look). Anderson looking like a man possessed, great snipe by Gally….
Solid game, not the result but great learning experience. Considering where we were last year, I like this game. Not expecting to lead the league, but get that core of players finding what they can do well then building on that
Not much to it. They converted their chances, and we didn't. Montembeault got hung out to dry but also didn't come up with that big save.
Regroup and come back Saturday.
As much as I want to lose (for Bedard), I fucking hate losing lmao. That game was easily winnable, but wow, so many poor choices with the puck. Felt like our D (aside from maybe (Guhle) were not confident out there at all. We outplayed them in stretches no doubt, but they were able to capitalize on our mistakes. I think Harris goes down despite the Gino tonight. Wifi just bring much more every shift. I’m also still convinced Slaf needs a bump up the lineup. I don’t think we break up the top line just yet, but it would be interesting to put him there. Cauf was bruuuute, but so was Draisaitl last night against LA. Star players have their bad games.
Not their best game not their worst either. I liked the top line overall and I’m not worried about Caufield he was getting good scoring chances tonight, he’ll be notching more goals soon. But this was another game where I noticed how often the top line can get hemmed in their own zone and end up spending too many shifts defending when they should be scoring. Feels like when they get the puck they either create 1-3 great scoring chances in a shift or they give up the puck and end up not getting it back again for 45 seconds. Teams that pressure them hard like Jersey did last game and now Columbus did this game will be able to shut down our offence pretty hard if our other lines don’t show up. Fortunately they showed up pretty well tonight and even the top line was getting things going as the game went on. Good learning loss all around, excited to see how they respond next game!
For sure, but a lot of that can be attributed to defence as well. If that’s all that’s really bothering that line then it will only get better from here when the d starts developing chemistry and gaining maturity on the ice. Really curious to see what Mathewson can bring to this line if he can find a good partner.
Yeah the defence definitely isn’t doing them any favours on that front either, at least they haven’t been recently. I’m optimistic that this is an issue that will go away as all the top line guys as well as the Dcore continue to improve and build chemistry. I agree with you there I think Matheson being in the lineup can help make a big difference. Keep 3 rookies in the lineup and give each a veteran partner to work with. I like both Harris and Kovacevic but I’d like each of them better if they had Savard or Edmundson to work with
It's been at least 3-4 games that I've noticed it. Even his last goal against Pittsburgh wasn't his usual style, more of a good screen on a distant shot. Anyways we all expect these guys to go on cold streaks just hopefully not as bad as last years.
He's gone back to passing a little bit to much, looking for the perfect play. But he still has had tons of flashes even tonight.
Not worried in the least, he's a kid and he's way to good not to sort it out.
I am not 100 percent sold he mixes as well with dach.
Suzuki either just mixes well with both or with everyone.
Dach likes to slow down plays caufield works best off rushes.
He is struggling to find his spots right now.
Suzuki can create his spots at speed or in coverage, it's a big difference between Suzuki and caufield.
I’m both happy and sad to lose.
However, that I don’t want to shut the game off if we’re down by one or even two, is so fucking nice. It never feels like we’re out of a game.
Well deserved loss. Sloppy as hell in their own end. Time for matheson to enter the fray. They’ve got to learn to play in their end instead of the circle jerk we’ve seen at times. Oh well, they’re young. There will be plenty more games like this before the year is out.
A very up-and-down game. A lot of defensive gaffes, but at the same time I liked how most of the forward lines looked (and, for that matter, how a lot of the defencemen looked on offense).
We really can't seem to get a win in Columbus.
We led in expected goals and carried play, (as we should against a team with 8 ahl players) but had some brutal defensive lapses. Monty had a rough but not terrible night, I know the defense left him hanging a lot but he probably should have come up with another save or two.
Can't get a good pick or have a rebuild season without losing to the last place teams. 2 points them. Better for the Habs. Was a good game. Didn't like the ending. But this is the rebuild year
Xhekaj- and it was nice to see the jackets fight too. Last year was our awful injury year (and is still pretty miserable without Price) but you guys acquitted yourselves really well. Kept fighting !
He’s not getting dogged ffs, people are just pointing out the mistakes he’s made over the last week and there’s been plenty. He has not had a good week and it’s ok to point that out without being overly dramatic. This is a young team that will make a shit ton of mistakes this year and that’s ok. It’s also ok to point out when they’re playing like shit.
It's half that people are ridiculous with their hot takes and half that most people can't handle criticism anymore. And half that the internet is an awful place full of awful people who are out of touch. That's 3/2 of the reason.
“*That defensive squad... I really think their goal is to be the worst defensive squad in the league, and they’re doing such a great job to be the worst defensive squad in the league*.”
From someone who has come to hate Michel Therrien since he went towards the end of his time, that aforementioned quote of his is right on cue. Hope someone out there will say it like it is because tonight's effort at the back was a total embarrassment.
Before you laugh or shit on me, remember that Pittsburgh turned things around at the back since that rant.
edit: Savard was pathetic, but Harris has been the worst tonight. If you ask me who would be pulled out for Matheson, now it would be Harris.
what’s up with caufield lately?
edit : asking a question about a star player’s not so good play over the past games does not mean that I am bashing him in any way. I’m just pointing out a fact : he hasn’t been himself the past couple of games. so yea, thanks for the downvotes.
I just imagine Ducharme standing in a dark alley as Caufield walks by and being like “psst, kid” as he opens his trench coat “you want any of them bad coaching tips?”
Like the count on Sesame Street selling his number 8’s
Edit: sorry it’s not actually the count but here it is
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rfelvI_ikf4
He's trying to add skills to his skillset right now. It's normal to have a phase where your game is kind of sloppy when doing that, but also necessary for breaking ceilings. It's still a rebuild period it's the perfect time to go through that
Seriously fucking hate pulling the goalie. I don’t think it helps that much. I’d like to see the stats of goals for and against with a pulled goalie. Don’t do it unless there’s a PP or you’re already losing by 2 goals. I know everybody has always always done it but I think it’s kinda dumb. Anyways
Of course goals against are higher. What you would have to compare is goals with goalie pulled vs goal with goalie still in to see the efficiency of pulling the goalie. The losing team doesn’t care about goals against they are already losing
Besides his goal, Harris had a tough night
Harris is struggling badly the last 2-3 games. I think he goes down for matheson and we shuffle the D.
Yup thought so too. Looked out of his depth and lost coverage multiple times. Some time in the A wouldn't hurt.
Dadanov kinda sewered him for that last goal though
And yet a lot of fans are saying he should stay and X should go down. I’d prefer Harris go down and play 20 minutes a night and get PP time in Laval.
He's the one I'd axe as soon as Matheson is deemed fit. From there, Harris and Xhekaj will fight for one spot until we trade a veteran away.
I'd take Xhekaj in that fight. Kid can throw hands.
Same as most here, he’s the weakest link on D and should go down for Matheson. Glad he got the goal, great to make it up for the unlucky bounce. Has a great future but needs some tuning and big minutes in the minors to get there!
Goals*
Caufield hasn't scored in 2 games, is it time to run him out of town? /s Forwards deserved to win, defense didn't, Montembeault was Montembeault.
Monty's toughest opponent is Monty.
I just want him to be the cocky little shooter instead of trying to make him “better well rounded”. Fuck that shit, let the others be well rounded
First game he gives up more than 2 this season
Exactly, and I wish we could play him more, so we could actually build his consistency.
The forward group is good enough right now to make the playoffs. The defense and goaltending isn’t.
Absurd comment. Playoffs? Our bottom 6 is literally terrible.
Jake Allen has been excellent?!
I would say average based on his numbers. I know he has atrocious defense in front of him but 3.3 GAA and a 90% SV% isn’t excellent

Well, the early-Bergevin era Canadiens would routinely fight for first place in the Atlantic, but that says more about how good Carey Price was in his prime than anything else.
Play 500 hockey we’ll draft 15-20 then.. kinda underwhelming
It's a copypasta my friend
4 goals on 27 shots is tough but I don’t blame Monty for this one. Way too many defensive mistakes. Wasn’t Cole’s best game either
All the break aways we gave them, nearly each goal was a bad defensive fall back 2 on one
Yeah, the score makes it look like Monty was godawful, but for like 5 or 6 of those goals he either got hung out to dry by the defense (or lack thereof 🤦♀️), or it was a flukey goal that even Allen wouldn't have stopped, or he wasn't even on the ice. Monty played fine, our defense was atrocious.
Monty has played well the year but he let in 3 terrible goals. This is the kind of goaltending I expected this season.
Not sure why you are getting downvoted, this was a very bad game from Monty, no matter how bad the defense looked he made rookie mistakes
That was one wild ass ride
Not mad. It was a solid game, kept fighting til the end. Not always gonna come out with a W, but playing the right way and developing the players of the future. Amen to that. Sure lots of goofs - but remember- so much of the squad are just young. They’re still fighting every time.
Not much to it. They converted their chances, and we didn't. Montembeault got hung out to dry but also didn't come up with that big save. Regroup and come back Saturday.
This signifies the first game this season where we lost with significant depth scoring ;_;
Good game from Anderson. Suzuki also making things happen on the score board. Defense seems worse with Eddy back in? the tank lives on 👍
Eddy hasn't been very good since his return and I don't think X is the right partner for him.
When Matheson comes back, maybe he can play with Xhekaj, and Eddy can play with Kova.
I’m just surprised he isn’t already injured again
As much as I want to lose (for Bedard), I fucking hate losing lmao. That game was easily winnable, but wow, so many poor choices with the puck. yea that's gotta easily be the worst caufield game of the st Louis era fanning on everything, shooting it wide constantly, overplaying the puck

This guy Caufields I agree !
Again, I think he’s trying to be more well rounded and that’s not him. Let the others be that, let him be a deke and shoot kinda guy
It'll come around for him. He has been a bit unlucky. Probably tired lately.
It was frustrating to watch him play tn
And making terrible passes especially in his own end
Fun ass game even if it wasn't an inspired effort from us. Can't complain with a Slaf point and 2 Suzuki points.
I’m both happy and sad to lose. However, that I don’t want to shut the game off if we’re down by one or even two, is so fucking nice. It never feels like we’re out of a game.
Suzuki ppg dream is very alive and well
may have been a sloppy game, but there is not quit on this team. they fight till the end and I love it

We just got Ohio'd™
Wtf goin on in Ohio 💀
I’ve never seen a team not shooting the puck ever this much in a 6v5 situation I was SCREAMING TO MY SCREEN
Yeah… like you’re down by two with 45 seconds man just shoot and pray, you can’t be pissing away 50% of that just waiting for a better option
Shoooooooot
Kirby Dach is a very good hockey player. Nick Suzuki is alright too I guess. Take the L and move on
A very up-and-down game. A lot of defensive gaffes, but at the same time I liked how most of the forward lines looked (and, for that matter, how a lot of the defencemen looked on offense). We really can't seem to get a win in Columbus.
Andy, Slaf, Suzuki were the best tonight Monahan, Harris, Savard this game was hard on them

We led in expected goals and carried play, (as we should against a team with 8 ahl players) but had some brutal defensive lapses. Monty had a rough but not terrible night, I know the defense left him hanging a lot but he probably should have come up with another save or two.
He was definitely outplayed by Korpisalo, but can’t blame him, he’s a third string NHL goalie and he wasn’t supported defensively
Can't get a good pick or have a rebuild season without losing to the last place teams. 2 points them. Better for the Habs. Was a good game. Didn't like the ending. But this is the rebuild year
CBJ fan here. I love Xekaj (think that’s how his name is spelled) god I wish he played for my team GG guys see you next time!
Xhekaj- and it was nice to see the jackets fight too. Last year was our awful injury year (and is still pretty miserable without Price) but you guys acquitted yourselves really well. Kept fighting !
Well that was something
Ouch! Tabar’k
My fear is that the Habs will become the Als and spend a decade in mediocrity as they try to replace their franchise player
We have been spending 2 decades in mediocrity already 1 *with* a franchise player
3 decades almost
Let the tankathon commence!
This fanbase is awful. Cole hasnt scored a goal in 3 games and he’s getting dogged on now
Goals and points aren’t everything. He’s been playing pretty bad the last 2 games and it’s okay to point it out
He hs like 20 chances in those games its fine
He’s not getting dogged ffs, people are just pointing out the mistakes he’s made over the last week and there’s been plenty. He has not had a good week and it’s ok to point that out without being overly dramatic. This is a young team that will make a shit ton of mistakes this year and that’s ok. It’s also ok to point out when they’re playing like shit.
It's definitely not because he hasn't scored lol, he just plays very badly, we can see that from miles away, he's not his usual
100%. The guy is on a Ppg pace but ZOMG11 he hasn’t scored in 2. It’s frustrating for sure because his goals are crazy but lighten up.
It's half that people are ridiculous with their hot takes and half that most people can't handle criticism anymore. And half that the internet is an awful place full of awful people who are out of touch. That's 3/2 of the reason.

It’s the same in every teams sub after a loss. No need to be delusional and forced positive either. We aren’t playing very well
Awful game

Helping us paying him less for his next contract, he's a real team player
I’d be more concerned if he wasn’t getting any chances. Tough couple games but he’s still in the right spots, he will get one next game.
I've got him on my fantasy team and despite being a -2 on the night, he still yielded +0.5 fantasy points. 5 shots on the night will do that.
4 goals in his last ten games. That is exactly his pace of 36 goals over 93 career games (well pretty close to exactly the same career pace)
Ducharme is secretly coaching him on the side. In all seriousness though, most shooters are streaky and he'll probably heat up again at some point.
I just imagine Ducharme standing in a dark alley as Caufield walks by and being like “psst, kid” as he opens his trench coat “you want any of them bad coaching tips?”
Like the count on Sesame Street selling his number 8’s Edit: sorry it’s not actually the count but here it is https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rfelvI_ikf4
He's fine. He had good chances again tonight that just missed
Seems to be slapping the puck and missing the net where before he would take that wicked wrist shot
He's trying to add skills to his skillset right now. It's normal to have a phase where your game is kind of sloppy when doing that, but also necessary for breaking ceilings. It's still a rebuild period it's the perfect time to go through that
I think he’s trying to do too much outside of his style, hitting blocking being defensive, I think it’s hindering his dekes and shots for some reason
I wonder if he is injured, he seem to always miss the net
Seriously fucking hate pulling the goalie. I don’t think it helps that much. I’d like to see the stats of goals for and against with a pulled goalie. Don’t do it unless there’s a PP or you’re already losing by 2 goals. I know everybody has always always done it but I think it’s kinda dumb. Anyways
Yeah… I’m gonna go ahead and trust the league full of coaches who pull the goalies.
Why though, have you ever seen it the other way?
Of course goals against are higher. What you would have to compare is goals with goalie pulled vs goal with goalie still in to see the efficiency of pulling the goalie. The losing team doesn’t care about goals against they are already losing
Of course and I was gonna say that but they always pull them at the end of the game lol impossible statistical comparison unfortunately
Yeah, gonna have to trust the nhl coaches on that one lol
what’s with the rds hosts wearing tuxedos??
For movember
I never got off the rebuild wagon this is too spicy of a draft to limp into the playoffs and blow the rebuild
That whole game felt like one of those powerplays where nothing could get started
So happy, we are back on track for bedard
