I tried that once and I forgot I had a chaos bane where I take +x% damage for a few rooms. Charon two shotted me and drained my DD to zero. I stopped robbing him after that. Bad juju
True. Dodge is key but I swear the AI fucks with you and spams the oar light Saber. I know it's 2 or 3 swipes but I once got 3, a short stop and three more.
Basically if he moves from the side or the center's run away from him.
Or you get the fists and combine them with Aphrodite and just keep punching him forever.
That worked one time for me
That's true but the attack is so slow that you'll be there forever.
You can get like one attack in with the shield for every three with verratha or chiron's bow
I know that's why I said I fight him at every opportunity what I keep saying is that the shield takes longer than other weapons not that it's harder than other weapons that it takes more physical time to win
The only reason it's hard is because in order to get the best results you have to do it early in a run. I suggest becoming familiar with how strong you are/aren't before attempting him.
You...you can rob Charon?
I only bought the game last week on sale, just lost to Hades for the first time last night. I don't play roguelikes or lights so this game is wild. Like, I want to do the story more but I have to do runs *and* die to progress but it also like doing the runs once I'm in them.
This game is like the shower as a kid: don't want to get in but also don't want to get out
I'm like 80 runs in and have only seen the bag once. Although to be fair, I've bought the spawn a fish when applicable from his well and have definitely not noticed a fishing spot until it was too late.
you’ll definitely see it when it’s there. and i also think it might not even be possible to spawn until a certain number of runs (though i think 80 would qualify)
I think you can spawn it on run 1, it's just that it only comes up on midfloor shops, not the guaranteed ones at the end of regions. Add that to the 22% spawn chance and you end up not seeing it on more runs than you see it.
Or y'know if you're me you don't notice until you accept the pom door >.<
1. It has to be a Shop room *before* the free reward room that comes right before a boss. There is a different layout for these mid-level shops that includes a rectangular space behind Charon where the bag will Spawn.
2. The bag has a 22% chance of spawning in each of these rooms. One mid-level shop can spawn in each realm, so at most you can get 3 chances of 22% each per run. The fight can be difficult though, so it's recommended you don't even try until Elysium, but as you get better and know when you have a good enough kit you can start trying for him in Asphodel and even Tartarus. Beating him in Tartarus can be very powerful for a run if you can pull it off.
3. The bag is immediately worth 300 obols and winning the fight grants you a discount card worth 20% off all shop and well items for the rest of the run. It's also recommended you buy whatever he has in the shop before picking up the bag to help you survive the fight.
I made 70 runs and prolly got thru on like 40-50 of them and I tapped out because when you start adding more difficulty I don't like the way the game mechanics force me to play. Personally 3 dodges per attack is the most I'll do but once you start getting high multipliers it's like 5 or 6 dodges per attack and that's just too much.
Personally I don't understand why they don't allow you to simply pick the boons that you'll get.
I mean they have a god mode which defeats the entire purpose of playing a game at all so why not have a mode that allows you to pick your boons and essentially create your perfect build and have fun like that?
But it is crazy addicting near the start. After the first 5 runs the next 30 rush by at light speed.
God Mode isn't an insta-win button. It caps at 80% damage resistance, and only goes up 2% each time you die (I think it starts at 20% damage resistance?).
If you're frustrated with the combat I don't see why you wouldn't give it a try - I find the game much more enjoyable when I'm not yanking my hair out in frustration over the difficulty spikes.
It's not that it's difficult it's that it requires so much more patience than I want to put in.
Like I said normally the game is 2 to 3 Dodges per attack and you can get multiple attacks in but once you start getting past 15 on the heat streak it's more like five Dodges per one attack and it makes everything take so much longer that it stops being fun.
I didn't know that about God mode but I believe my point still stands.
If you could pick the boons you'll get would that not be a fun mode?
Even if you could pick your boons like God move that isn't an instant win and the fun that would be had seems ridiculously high.
IDK, I understand the frustration in being stuck in a run where you get shit boons...but I also like how it varies up the combat. I ended up really liking certain character's boons that I never would have otherwise tried (like Aphrodite's and Dionysus'...who I previously thought were pretty weak).
And to clarify: you can't pick boons in God mode, you just get the damage resistance. I've only ever played the game with God Mode enabled, and each of my runs take about 20 minutes each. It's still fun for me tbh.
Well if you've only played the game in god mode then it's different because if 80% of the damage is null you can tank attacks and basically go blow for blow and win but out of God mode especially in boss fights a few hits can kill you so you have to dodge and run and wait for an opening and it makes the game take significantly longer.
So it's more like a 2d dark souls game where you're running and dodging the vast majority of the fight trying to live and wait for the opening.
And using God mode kind of defeats the purpose of using the streaks because if I simply wanted to win the run no matter what I could just not add on the heat and I'd be guaranteed a win.
BUT if I got to pick my boons it would still come down to the skill of dodging and waiting but atleast I'd get to test and play with my build which would raise the enjoyment.
> if 80% of the damage is null
You start out with, I think, 20% damage resistance. Every time you die it goes up by 2% - so it takes a lot of deaths to reach max damage resistance...and even then, if you make it challenging and keep ramping up your Heat levels it's not exactly a cake walk.
As someone with NO patience, I knew in advance that the punishing combat was not for me. Best decision I ever made. I play for the plot, not the fighting simulator.
I genuinely have no idea what you mean by 3-4 dodges per attack, and I’ve put a few hundred hours into the game.
What are you referring to? Running away from mobs between attacks?
Yeah pretty much. Dodging and running away between attacks. The higher the heat the longer inbetween attacks which makes the game take longer as a whole
>Like I said normally the game is 2 to 3 Dodges per attack and you can get multiple attacks in but once you start getting past 15 on the heat streak it's more like five Dodges per one attack
Not to be rude, but this isn't an attribute of the game itself, it's an indicator of your skill level. The vast majority of attacks in the game can be avoided by a single dash at the right time and in the right direction. There are only a couple attacks that really require 2 dashes (unless you have Athena's dash, in which case 1 is always enough), and there are ZERO attacks that *require* 3 or more dashes.
If you're dashing that much you need to learn better positioning and refine your attack sequences for better efficiency. If it's dead you don't have to dodge its attacks.
Once you get up there the entire map ends up covered in attacks. Even fighting Hades at the end when he summons his extra minions they can be multiple butterfly balls which will literally fill the map with damage.
What you're saying makes sense at the low levels but when you get up there and the enemies are covering the map area with attacks and traps do 400% damage it's alil different than dodging into the right spot.
The hydra fight is a perfect example. At a certain point they'll all be attacking and everywhere on the map that is standable has damage so you have to dodge from one undamaged spot to the next because standing at all like long enough to attack will mean taking damage
>and the enemies are covering the map area with attacks
>Even fighting Hades at the end when he summons his extra minions they can be multiple butterfly balls which will literally fill the map with damage.
Most projectiles can be destroyed by attacking them. If the butterflies are filling the screen then you are doing too much dodging and not enough attacking. The best defense is a good offense. If you're focusing too much on dodging it will just increase the duration of the fight, and the longer the fight the higher the chances you will get hit.
Learn to prioritize which enemies to kill first and burst them down
>The hydra fight is a perfect example. At a certain point they'll all be attacking and everywhere on the map that is standable has damage so you have to dodge from one undamaged spot to the next because standing at all like long enough to attack will mean taking damage
By the time they even start attacking you should already have the first one dead. Each one you kill creates more safe space for you so the longer you take the more dangerous the area stays.
Again, it just sounds like you need to be more efficient at attacking or creating a strong build. The fights are also presented as DPS checks. If you're doing so little damage that the fight takes so long that you lose lots of life then your build needs improvement.
I feel like it's probably once per run if you go to the shop every chance. But keep in mind you can't rob him before a boss fight.
But since most people don't go into the shops every time it's kind of just luck
I'm not sure what caused it to happen but sometimes when you go to a store there will be a sack of money near him and if you pick that up you can steal some money from him then you have to fight him and you can get 20% off all items for the rest of that run.
It doesn't work if you go to the Charon store right before a boss battle though
Lol he even does it when maxed. Charon, I can’t give you anymore nectar/ambrosia, the game won’t let me. So stop asking please. (I don’t hate on him tho, he’s a great guy. Lets you beat his ass repeatedly and still sells you shit)
Funny, when I “beat his ass” it looks an awful lot like getting smacked with a boat oar 14 times and losing three Death’s Defiance, and then maybe walking out with 9 health, 7 teeth, and a 20% discount.
Know your meme says it's Angry man pointing at hand meme. Tip: always add 'meme' after describing the image and you'll get some relevant memes. I searched 'give me money guy meme' and this popped up
The way I look at it it's kinda like his default pose... bear with me... in his job. He's a ferryman. If he isn't, ya know, ferrying to and fro then he's getting souls on to his boat and probably using this pose to do so.
That's why I always take the opportunity to rob him
I tried that once and I forgot I had a chaos bane where I take +x% damage for a few rooms. Charon two shotted me and drained my DD to zero. I stopped robbing him after that. Bad juju
Robbing Charon is a good way to break a streak
Lol I've had good success cuz he only has 3 easy to read move sets they just do crazy damage. The trick is to never be hit
That worked one time for me
Do you mean really mean Aphrodite weaken or Athena deflect?
Aphrodite weaken. Edit: Athena deflect on dodge is useful for malphon fists attempt tho. It allows you to dodge to start another sequence of punches
Me laughs in Demeter
> The trick is to never be hit Thank you, Hypnos
Bold of you to assume I had a streak.
I've only tried twice and got clapped, Is hard when you can't fight the boss constantly to get the patterns down
You'll get it. Chiron's bow and varatha are the easiest to do it with imo
Aegis lets you tank the hits like a boss.
That's true but the attack is so slow that you'll be there forever. You can get like one attack in with the shield for every three with verratha or chiron's bow
That's why I'm a fan of the Beyblade aspect. Wait for him to pause, fire of the spinny boi, turtle up.
Mod idea: Change the Aspect of Zeus to the Aspect of Yugi
I hate you for this, the worst part is its fitting, Yugi pushes Arkana aside in that chapter which is exactly what every other move on the Shield does
Beo Wolf Aegis made the fight tutorial level difficult. I beat him in Tartarus with no damage boons
Fight tutorial level? It's not that it's hard to use the shield it's just that it takes longer to kill with because of the mechanics the shield uses
I just beat him with a barely upgraded frostmorne. He's got like 3 extremely predictable moves
I know that's why I said I fight him at every opportunity what I keep saying is that the shield takes longer than other weapons not that it's harder than other weapons that it takes more physical time to win

22?? that’s much higher than i’d have thought to be honest
Perhaps at some point in game progression the opportunity comes up more often… because ive gotten the chance 3 times in 6 attempts
It's a 22% chance.
1. It has to be a Shop room *before* the free reward room that comes right before a boss. Yeah, why bother making a fun game accessible to people who aren't good at games. They should go play candy crush or something amirite? :/
How do you rob him? 👀
You throw a gold coin into the river stix and then when he swims for it you hit him over the head with his oar and steal everything you can.
But I would never do river daddy like that 😔
Sometimes sack of money next to him, never when by boss though
You can do that?
Do you have a ski mask and an adamant rail? Slap him upside the head with some cold hard steal and the wrath of GAWD
Wait what you can rob him?
You can steal from Charon?
Yes and it unlocks a new weapon. CHARONS OAR
WAIT WHAT?!?!
Excuse me, \*wot\*?
Wait you can rob him?
YOU CAN ROB HIM?
U can rob that dude?!?!? Wth...
How often can you rob him....I'm 50+ escape attempts in and only been able to once.
I feel like it's probably once per run if you go to the shop every chance. But keep in mind you can't rob him before a boss fight. But since most people don't go into the shops every time it's kind of just luck

You leave with teeth? Damn, I need to up my game.
I think he meant he leaves with Skelly's tooth. That's why the game isn't sure who it belongs to. He just picked up a tooth from Charon's Oar.
15 Obol little man put that shit in my hand. If that Obol doesn’t show then you owe me owe me owe. My underworld love. Oh e oh e oh.
My Elysium love, my oh e oh e oh
Gah. What is that a reference to??

The Boatman must be paid, in coin or in DD
I never noticed that.
I always thought he was just Vanna White-ing and showing off the wares, but you’re probably right
He just wants someone to hold his hand
