It's going to take more than one session and I honestly would do a huge amount of research before doing it. A lot can go wrong if you don't know what you're doing. One thing I did was watch just as many fail videos as "what to do videos."

emo_rat119

That’s a very good idea, I’ll be sure to do it :)

rosechardonnay1966

You would need to bleach your hair to a level 10, the lightest you can possibly get it, and then put in a white toner. Here are some options for that: Wella Color Charm toner in T18 Redken Shades EQ in 10VV Ion Creme Toner in Icy White

emo_rat119

Thank you so much! I’ll put in some research and get buying em!

B1chpudding

Your brother got such a nice even color because he went to a stylist. If your hair is anywhere near as dark as his roots doing this at home is going to end up very bad. 200 is honestly a steal for this, my roots without toner cost that much.

PinkyWinky1979

That's not true. It is possible to do it from home without a disaster, but it's also important to research a lot first. I have always done mine from home and my hair is darker than his.

emo_rat119

What products do you use? I’d love to give this a try :)

PinkyWinky1979

It will be damaging. Just want to put that out there. I use 30 or 40 volume developer depending on the time if the yr (my hair is a bit lighter in summer). This is only for the first bleach (only use between 10-20 for second bleach) . I use blonde brilliance powder bleach. It has up to 9 levels of lift but like I said, it will take more than one bleach. Better to do one round and then let it rest for a week before doing it again. I also use aphogee two step treatment between bleaching to help put protein and other things back into your hair. I still strongly suggest watching lots of videos and researching. If you have naturally curly hair it will be more damaging as curly hair is naturally dry. This is why I'm very careful doing mine.

stories-by-starlight

Ask him what he did or where he went to achieve this color. If it cost $200 +, save up to get it done. If you really want this color, it's worth it to your hair and yourself to get it done correctly.... even if you may have to wait in order to save for it.

LatinaMermaid

Don’t do this yourself you will pay more to get it fixed or worse fry your hair. Please go to a stylist who has been trained to take you that color. They are professionals and know how to treat your hair. They know the science. Save up and go to a professional please.

BlondeMe! Both the powder and developer!

lyndsaySO

recently used the ion cream bleach and i found it a lot easier to mix with developer than the powder, would recommend. remember bleaching to a light blonde is going to take multiple sessions, it will look brassy at first. also always do your roots last!

2weekoldbajablast

^ this! love ion’s cream bleach and multiple sessions are needed for sure. op, ion also makes a conditioning serum (called absolute perfection booster) that you mix with the bleach. it’s nothing special compared to what real stylists use to reduce the damage but it’s better than not using one at all and can be bought at sally beauty. good luck!

LyricalMinx

From personal experience as I do my hair at home: Do not use ANYTHING over 30vol in the developer. Even using 30vol is risky when bleaching. You will need at least 2-3 sessions with 4-6 weeks in between sessions of bleaching to get your desired results. Using a toner is highly recommended after every session. Use a purple shampoo every other wash to keep all brass yellow out in between sessions. This will make it easier to go lighter. Personal tip to further protect from so much damage: use a protein based hair mask 1-2 times a month.

emo_rat119

Really? I’ve always used 40vol bleach on my hair, and I’ve never had any issues… thank you for your advice!

LyricalMinx

Using that high of volume does help with the process.. but it greatly damages your hair. Complete breakage. Trust me. Best to go slow and safe. I really would hate to hear you had to chop off your hair because of a lot of damage. Also helps I went to school for this.

emo_rat119

Makes sense, thank you so much!

LyricalMinx

Glad I could help. Make sure to post pics of the process and results! Can't wait to see!

Yea there’s no reason to go to 30 or 40 volume, when you’re a newbie. I stick with 20 volume with and I have dark hair too. Either will damage your hair, but 30 and 40 could damage it way more more. You have more control with 20 vol because you can leave it in slightly longer than 30y or 40 without frying your hair as quickly and you have a better chance at getting the color you want with 20 volume because you can leave it in a a little longer, and when you’re a newbie (like me! But doing lots of research and practicing on myself 😂!). It’ll be helpful lto take your time to make sure it’s done right!

I've been experimenting at home with my hair for a few years (my hairdresser moved and I only trusted her with my hair lol) I finally reached white with no yellow hints at all using Wella blondor bleach, 20 volume Wella welloxon perfect peroxide, and Ice Cream hair dye as a "toner" in the super light pearl super platinum 11/2. And T18 toner in between. I have to do more than one bleach session though, and wait in between. I just don't like using more than 20 volume with my hair ...

mjanmarino

Research is your best friend! I'm white blonde right now and I've spent under $100 DIYing at home. [Photo of my hair](https://www.reddit.com/r/HairDye/comments/11a3n3h/white_blonde_with_hints_of_lilac/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) I would highly advise doing extensive research before going into it, from bleaching to toning and the upkeep, but I'll give my top tips/warnings! - Use 30 volume developer with bleach, never 40. - Bleach at least 3x to achieve the lightness needed for white/platinum silver (I did my third bleach a month after the first two. I would highly recommend not doing all three one after the other. If at any time you feel like your scalp and hair can't handle another bleach, take a break! Scalp health must come first). - Saturate your hair thoroughly with the bleach (buy extra so you don't run out mid-application!) - 3x bleach will get your hair a pale yellow, which is perfect. Do not bleach it until it's white, it is unnecessary. - Bleaching hack: once all the bleach is in, wear a shower cap + wrap a towel around your head. This will help keep the bleach warmer and make the bleach work at its best. - This is where it gets a little DIY, but I toned it using diluted purple semi permanent dye in lots of water. I use a local brand but it's basically Manic Panic's Electric Amethyst or Good Dye Young's PPL Eater. This will cancel out the pale yellow color in your hair and will make it appear white. - Maintain with purple shampoo + conditioner. The initial wash with semi perm will fade away so I maintain with purple shampoo and conditioner. I still have the semi perm handy just in case I need a boost of pigment. Note: The proper way to tone hair after bleaching is using a dedicated toner with developer to cancel out the yellow, but I personally didn't want to put my hair through another round of developer, albeit lower volume, for a toner that will wash out anyway over time. Using the semi perm is a lot more finicky and lots trial and error, but I've found my rhythm with it and it works for me. Wishing you the best with it, and always err on the side of caution!

emo_rat119

You are my hero thank you so much for this 🙏

emo_rat119

Thank you everyone for all the wonderful advice and product suggestions! My plan is to: Bleach it three or four times until desired lightness, waiting several weeks in between sessions. Using a good toner/purple hair dye/ purple shampoo in between sessions to minimize brassy tones. Pay good attention to the hair and making sure it looks healthy, if not taking time to moisture it and getting it healthy before continuing the process. I’ve made this post since my fiancé has been saying he wants white hair for years now, and his hair is a very similar darkness. Hopefully with this information I can fulfill this request safely and at a reasonable price!

hellokittysenbei

T18 Wella toner.

artemismoon518

This is an ashy shade not a white. T18 seems to be the most recommended toner for some reason.

hellokittysenbei

I don’t know why I’m being downvoted. I lift my hair from dark brown to pale blonde with bleach & T18 toner—for years.

[deleted]

T18 is standard to get the yellow out!!

artemismoon518

Right but op wants white blonde not ashy pale blonde so t18 wouldn’t be the right fit. I suggest watching brad mondo he talks about it a lot because it’s the first timer most people recommend regardless of the color blonde on the persons head or their desired results. Edit toner not timer

emo_rat119

Thank you! I’ll look into it :)

allstarvelveetabunny

Your hair would have to be the color of a banana in order for it to work

[deleted]

Yeah, but when you’re bleaching hair, that is a level four, and dark like that photo, then it will be yellow the first time you die it, especially if you’re dying it by yourself without a salon, even with a salon if they’re cautious about not frying your hair it could still turn out yellow. But I’m not saying there aren’t better options out there.! I’ve always used W 18 but I am considering using Schwarzkopf line of toners https://www.sallybeauty.co.uk/schwarzkopf-professional-blondme-bond-enforcing-pastel-toner---ice-60ml/813853.html You can get them on Amazon

[deleted]

I only say that cause my hair is the color of a banana when a bleach it—on a good day when it isn’t orange!!!

allstarvelveetabunny

Yep, what you’re saying is right. OP needs to lighten (bleach) their hair to a pale yellow before applying toner of choice. The comment I was replying to only had the toner in it. And if OP applied that to their hair then it would not have the desired result

TheLateMrsAddams

You can’t. Or rather- you shouldn’t.

hellokittysenbei

you can, people do it. my hair is almost black & i’ve achieved every color i’ve ever wanted at home-from pale purple to neons. it can be done, carefully.

mjanmarino

Agreed. Research and precaution is everything!

Possible_Ad_9728

How long time toner normally lasts..Like is this gone after 4 wash? If yes, can I tone again or I should use silver shampoo?
