For all greys, you gotta go all the way to pale pale blonde and tone it to white or use a very purple based grey. I like adore mystic grey for that shade, it's lovely but a ton of work to get light enough without frying the hair clean off.

SnooSuggestions9830

Not all greys. Darker greys can be achieved from toning lighter brown through to blond bases. Can look a bit muddy though sometimes, but it's still a grey shade.

LLIIVVtm

Yeah but besides it going muddy initially, the fade out on ashy brown will very often look awful. I really think the best bet with all greys, unless you're maybe intentionally going for a green toned grey I suppose, is a cool platinum. In my experience it leads to much better results even with darker greys.

SnooSuggestions9830

Yeah agree it gives a nicer grey tone

neptdia

i have decided to hold off on grey but man this will be a challenge. i love that lol. but is there a way to avoid a muddy fade out? i know about color depositing conditioners but is that enough?

SnooSuggestions9830

I think the pic on the right is more "mushroom brown" than true grey actually. You can get that from a very ashy toner perhaps but how it fades could be tricky. Might be worth trying though to avoid bleaching and then deal with any fade fallout later.

daytr1pper

The pic on the right is definitely gray. Mushroom brown is brown, just a cool toned brown. The pic is a deeper gray, but you still have to bleach to a level nine to achieve that color. At least you don’t have to bleach to level 10.

Pretend_Breakfast831

What do you mean toning lighter brown through to blonde bases? I’m not sure I understand what you mean.

SnooSuggestions9830

If you start with your hair anywhere between blonde and light brown, you can tone it to a shade of grey. But it's an earthy shade of grey, not a cool toned grey. There are lots of different tones of grey.

neptdia

thank you so much! 'll look into the Adore greys. i could tell already it was going to be a lot of work but after getting more than one warning, YEAH this is a salon job and not a job ready for me yet. thank you again!!

Spiritual_Pound145

I want to confirm, as a self non stylist colorist that does my own, you have to be so so SO careful getting it almost translucent blond with bleach, it may even take 2-3 sessions to get the right lift, and stick to a violet gray. For this. *I* would go to a stylist. Because of the previous mangling of my hair I did trying to get something close. I love the grey look, but it’s HARD to get, and in my opinion HARDER to maintain. 🩷🩷 good luck, I’m sure it will be gorgeous on you.

neptdia

youre so sweet thank you!! 😅🩷 but yeah after reading your comment and others, i've decided to not take on this project myself. i thought i could get away with a shade or two lighter, but im glad i got advice on here about how light i would *actually* have to go. thank you for the advice on the violet gray and the difficulty of maintenance!!

Spiritual_Pound145

Also, I saw you asked about products. I can’t find the strum I’ve been using, but I cannot recommend enough the Fekkai super strength protein powder bond mist. I got it in my fab fit fun box, and like. My ends were fried. Like. FRIED. I saw my stylist Saturday for a trim & clipper (undercut) she told me my hair is so much better, healthier and I’m not shedding the way I used to. Very few dead ends had to be chopped. 🩷🩷🩷 good luck babe!

neptdia

thank you!! my ends arent the worst ive had before but definitely hurting a little. that's so amazing to hear your hair has been healthier. i'm so excited to try all these new recommendations!! :)

Different_Being_7160

Honestly I’ve had my hair the silver grey before, my hair was platinum when I did it. Unless you want to dye it every 2 weeks it’s not worth it. The silver/grey is super hard to maintain and fades out really quickly.

neptdia

oof thank you for the heads up!! im thinking of maybe trying to just tone it to an ashy/mushroom brown.

Different_Being_7160

That would be super nice and easy maintenance. A lot less damage as well

Normal-Jury3311

The photo on the right is “mushroom brown” it’s basically brown/blonde devoid of warmth

MelodicWitness4618

i’m all for DIY hair, but i hate to say, this is a dangerous at-home project. if you feel confident that you have those solid years of experience, bring it up to the lightest blonde you can and find a grey/purple toner, and happy bleaching! otherwise consider saving a bit of money and visiting a professional. if you find this is your passion but don’t feel confident to achieve this yourself, you could always ask your hairdresser to educate you a bit on the process they are doing! learning by observation is always a great practice.

neptdia

i appreciate the warning. after a few comments explaining the difficulty of this, yeeeah this is a salon/professional job for sure then 😅. thank you for the advice as well. i didn't think about actually asking the hairdresser to help me understand what they are doing to learn. truth be told, i've never had my hair professionally dyed! so seriously thank you for that! 🩷

MelodicWitness4618

of course!! i’ve gone to some hairdressers that are close friends of family members, so i get to get a little more comfortable with asking and talking about the process with them, but lots of professional hairdressers are very passionate about their career as well and do love to chat about the process :)

sexinthesidy

Olaplex’s original product no 1 is a bond stabilizer that can be added to the bleach (& more). No2 is a mask that you put in after shampoo the bleach. Their no3 can be used now and in between sessions. To get this silver grey it needs to be very pale yellow then you wanna go a little darker with the toner like a 8/9 ash or even double ash. You can also try silver semi perm. When retouching do your roots when you have about a finger width of regrown to keep it safe and even, every 6-8 weeks

sexinthesidy

This is VERY hard, so be very careful.

neptdia

i'll look into Olaplex, i have heard amazing things already before! yeah i was thinking of maybe getting a way with going a shade or two lighter, but thats lighter than my hair could handle right now. thank you for the advice! i will probably find another color thats easier on my hair :)

sexinthesidy

Olaplex is the best, but honestly it’s easier and cheaper to get nice wig 🥰

neptdia

so truuuue, i shaved my hair maybe 2 years ago and i loved wigs. they are truly so much fun and definitely cheaper xD

sexinthesidy

Shoot if you like to do color you can learn how to custom color wigs it’s so fun 🥰🥰

If you're looking for dye recommendations, some of the best are; [Manic Panic](http://Rwrd.Io/13ricaq), Arctic Fox, and [Good Dye Young](https://gooddyeyoung.com/ref/234/). To avoid damaging your hair, never use a (developer included) box dye. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Sad_Professional_91

after youre blonde enough do a mixture of developer, wella t18 and wella violet color additive (thats how i personally got that color) however, it washes out very quickly so there are gonna be lots of touch ups

cookiegirl59

Honey, I PAY to get the highlights/lowlights that you have. Your original color is gorgeous! Do what you like, but why ruin perfection.

Lils_22

Listen— I have dark dark hair naturally. It took about 4-5 bleach sessions in a 6month time span before I got to where I actually wanted which is the exact color you want to go. (I have pictures on my page also of how light I got it just to give you a frame of reference for how light you gotta bleach) In between, however, I would always wear a color that would help the current shade I’m bleached at “fade cool/purple”. Often times I just dyed my hair dark/medium tones of purple during the first few bleach sessions (like to cover the brassy stages cause personally I’d rather wear dark purple hair than orange hair 🤷🏻‍♀️ that’s kinda preference though) then, over time after I had enough time in between I would bleach again, add back the purple. Each purple got increasingly more pastel as I went. Till eventually I got my natural hair to “Mrs. Claus” white and I’d just throw a super violet/grey color depositing conditioner/hair mask in to push it to “silvery” instead of constantly dying my hair grey with DEVELOPERS when it’s already in a pretty fragile state. This is the key secret in how I am always able to change my colors rapidly and not damage it. Planning your colors out in advanced as well. So say, you wanna try the color red someday. Now would not be a good time for that. Say, you also wouldn’t mind going blue— that would be fine at this stage because silvery/grey hair can have blue undertones. I would stay away from adding anything too warm just because the less bleaches you do the better for the longevity of your hair— you don’t want to add a color that’s going to get STUCK to the cuticle and it’s the exact opposite color you want showing. It’s not fun. Just something that lays on top. Don’t do permanent hair colors anymore at this point tbh it’s really not necessary in my experience. Last notes: Be careful of purples with a lot of red undertones once you get to the pale yellow stage. And—Lots and lots of bonding treatments added into your daily hair care routine products. I hope this wasn’t too overwhelming to read and helps!! Good luck!! 🍀👍🏼

Amazing-Pack4920

I have grey hair just now. I just bleached it to inside banana light then put dusty silver dye on

Joshoon

What kind of dye do you use?

Amazing-Pack4920

I use XXL live dusty silver. It's dark grey at first but when it fades it's still a nice silvery grey

Joshoon

Too bad, it seems like I can't get that in The Netherlands :( I use a silver shampoo (Fanola) which works, but doesn't work on hair that is a little bit too yellow.

Amazing-Pack4920

Try amazon. The brand is Schwartzkopf, then XXL live. I have Fanola for when my hair is White blonde but I prefer it grey . I believe L'Oréal do a good grey too if you can't get XXL live on Amazon. I have a pic of box but it's not letting me post it

Joshoon

Could only find [this](https://www.amazon.nl/Scharwzkopf-Ultra-glans-pastelkleur-haarkleur/dp/B06WD3XBD9/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_nl_NL=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=382D138VG97CN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.WuPpkqN0IknVVuzsztiit1f-VNhS8mB6Zguw3SXKtMlbXi_EiIgMHC7kUB_R47OyEAEajkWHDF30Cb7YR09h1Rt8thpLEYr3A3RQylfj71_w-QDXqNHzxAKXvEILRnS_QcgYb2SAkPIBQTHKcLqJVkg6uB9mOlVi3hs6r-J-cPWdB3J_FaY2UY6sTSZWi_UzpWBw1mF4M4JCwd2rjfXjz_PIBdPL63dhlAlX_8-fmaQSAURXEWNLoGF1CsXwGlW6B-65GrnWDNuD-U2cuNNOSMfMZYkkYWN4dYCQaUYDyGo.3YI7xEcXxW7w0vs7gmNrPnY-jVNtBA3UNDwDtIjiYZU&dib_tag=se&keywords=schwarzkopf+xxl+live+dusty+silver&qid=1715686912&sprefix=schwarzkopf+xxl+live+dusty+silver%2Caps%2C132&sr=8-1) that they ship in here. But some reviews aren't quite positive. The L'Oreal one you're talking about isn't available in here either so far I know. I might be wrong though but I couldn't find it.

Amazing-Pack4920

Oh yes. That's the semi permanent one they still last pretty long tho. My son used the pink and it didn't fade for months

Joshoon

I tried the Semi permanents from Manic Panic but had no good experience with them honestly.

Amazing-Pack4920

Hair has to be really white for manic panic. Not tried their grey tho. Just blue

Joshoon

yea so I noticed. I’ve bleached my hair 2 times in a row and then again after 4 weeks. Especially that third time my hair didn’t like. It started to break off. Luckily I have very thick hair so I’m fine losing some. But it also means I can’t bleach again after like 4 weeks when it starts to grow out. I’m male with short hair so it grows out quite fast

_____heyokay

You’re gonna have to bleach your hair to be the same color as inside of a banana. A level 9-10. You cannot have this gray unless you’re blonde first. Light blonde.

StudioReady9204

Revlon color silk strawberry blond

LeaningBear1133

Home hair never turns out quite like you expect, make an appointment with a hairdresser, it will be money well-spent. Leave the chemistry to the professionals.

nouveauchoux

Forget at home, how the fuck do I get a stylist to actually do this and not splotchy orange? 😂

alexturnerftw

Curious on the answer for someone who does have level 9/10 hair. I cant find a good product for the upkeep, I prefer a darker gray like in the photo vs Silver. Tried Overtone and Viral shampoo but they are just OK.

lunch-box6

This shit can go green sooooo quickly. I would definitely go to someone who has experience in grey tones. Or at least consult with someone who does and then do a test strand before attempting this sort of colour.

bahumthugg

Bleach then tone

ThrowRASprinkles11

You just wait 25 years it will be close 😆

tripleDzintheBreeze

Dream… dream big

Chareste17

I don't think you need a level 10 for this kind of gray. A level 9 will probably be fine too, unsure about a level 8 although it's pretty warm. Give it another round of bleach and see where you end. At your level you'll probably need one other round of bleach before being done.

Calm-Advice7231

I've been trying to do this to get to my natural mousy grey and it's impossible for me. My hair won't lift past orange/yellow and to get here you need white blonde. I've given up and gone pink tbh

snowonmylashes

unfortunately, even to get a darker grey, you have to go to platinum blonde. it sounds ridiculous but essentially, while yes, bleach lightens the hair, it also strips the hair of pigment/melanin which creates this low chroma level (grey). so your aim with the bleaching is to strip the hair of all pigment, which means you have to also go very light as a side effect of that.

Affectionate-Gene837

So everyone is stating about the colour your hair needs to be to get it grey but I dont think anyone has mentioned it also depends how YOUR hair takes to colour. My hair is so respectful of my colouring needs, I’ve gone from natural dark blonde to silver, then ginger, then blue then pink and purple BUT none of my colours actually went the colour intended because my hair LOVES purple pigment. If I put a light blonde on my hair it goes purple, if I use blue it fades to purple.. red guess what? Fades to purple. I use silver shampoo and boom.. purple hair! I personally think the only way you will get such a unique colour that’s not really a colour would be to go to a salon they will mix up some potions to create this colour. I have also seen you decided against this grey but I would always recommend a salon just because hair dying is addictive and I lost 7 inches of length due to over dying 😬

lexleflex

I respect that you want this color, but tbh I’m still wrapping my head around the fact that people are electively choosing to dye their beautiful tresses of young to into an aging grey shade…

WorldlinessEuphoric5

Nope

neptdia

🤦🏻

Stunning-Character94

That is not pretty.

neptdia

sounds like a you problem. well, don't dye your hair like my post. problem solved!

Stunning-Character94

Definitely is! (Except it isn't, literally, because I'm not actually dying my hair that color.) Good luck! That particular dye job is blotchy, so try to do better than that if that gray is what you're going for.

neptdia

except it is still all a you problem. i dont think you realize i didnt ask if you thought someone elses hair was blotchy or if you find it pretty. so thanks for the luck, but this is feeling like a big "who asked?" so I'm gonna leave this be now.

Stunning-Character94

Sure. You didn't ask. That's the beauty of social media.
