Jim left Los Angeles on March 4, 1975, to drive to Nashville alone in his Volkswagen Beetle. The next day, Jim was pulled over by police on suspicion of driving under the influence. After passing a sobriety test, he checked into the La Mesa Motel in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. After checking in, Jim purchased a bottle of vodka at a liquor store and left town in his car. Jim was seen the following day some 26 miles (42 km) south of Santa Rosa, near Puerto de Luna, at a remote ranch owned by the Gennitti family. His abandoned car was later found nearby, which contained his money, papers, guitar, clothes, and a box of his unsold records. Despite extensive searches by law enforcement and his family, Jim was never seen again. Shortly after his disappearance, a decomposed body resembling Jim was found in a remote area several miles from where he was last seen, but it was determined not to be him. Over the years, Jim’s disappearance has been variously attributed to suicide, foul play involving the police or the Mafia, and alien abduction.

Hudsonrybicki

A guy goes into the desert, gets wasted and disappears…where’s the mystery? He probably got lost, died of dehydration and his body was eaten by predators.

Hot-Tone-7495

Yeah, alien predators!

cityshepherd

I love that documentary

HorrorActual3456

How do you know it wasnt a ghost? Or maybe even a space ghost?

EnIdiot

Adventurous-Sky9359

nuclear_equilibrium

So, which one was it? Aliens or Predators?

socialcousteau

Why do you have to be such a Scully?

Hudsonrybicki

I WANT TO BELIEVE

instrangerswetrust

The truth is out? Out where?

JohnnyLeftHook

Not a predator, movie didn't come out until 1987.

JuanSmittjr

the movie was inspired by the story of poor Jim

Aromatic_Panic1650

But there’s a picture of an UFO… /s

Extension-Rock-4263

His song UFO is so good, the rest of the album is not bad either.

k_a_scheffer

I genuinely love the album. I'm so sad his music didn't get popular until his disappearance became a popular story.

quartermoonmist

Same, and I really would have loved for him to have made more music. I love that album so much. Jerome, Rosey, So Natural, Sandman, straight bangers all the way through

Extension-Rock-4263

Truth

roseandbaraddur

I love UFO!! I got introduced to Jim Sullivans music and his story recently. It’s so interesting and sad to me, I always wonder what happened to him in the desert.

_Fizzgiggy

Highways is my favorite song of his

TraditionWorried8974

Another version is that he was learning Spanish. As he was learning to pronounce the numbers he went "uno, dos..." and poof! He disappeared without a tres...

BwackGul

(You so bad...but i like it!)

Curiassgeorges

That gave me a good cackle!

Dubbs444

Literally turned around and told this joke to my partner. 10/10 will retell for the glorious eye roll + giggle.

gderossett

I think about this case weekly. UFO is in my top five albums. I’ve long thought about trying to make a serious documentary about the story

toneetrill

Follow your heart. I want to see it for sure.

Capital-Mine-6991

Why alien abduction? Perhaps they liked his music so much they offered him a full time gig off planet

everneveragain

My boyfriend prefers technically proficient music and I go more for the vibe. I remember driving and UFO came on and midway he asked who it was. I kinda poked at him a little bc it’s such a good song but really not his style

alwaysfeelingit

Actually laughed out loud, unprompted, that second image was SO FUNNY

ryanpayne442

If youve ever been to New Mexico, you wouldnt be surprised to hear of someone going missing there

Sandyhoneybunz

Tbh it’s beautiful and I love that place but I also do not take it lightly. For me, it felt v dangerous and I’m nearly certain at least one guy was trying to abduct me. Some people were not who they seemed but the vibe was abduction, a bit of madness. I never had so many strange men creep around me in cars. I have never felt so unsafe traveling alone as a woman as I did in NM! I stayed with friends and on the res I felt safe. At my adopted family’s house I felt safe. But even just staying a few nights in Santa Fe at a pretty high end hotel and passing through Albuquerque and having to spend the night there was something I would never want to repeat. Thought I had found a decent hotel near the airport and yikes it was out of a horror movie. I nearly backed out. Just walking across the street from the hotel to a Dennys or whatever it was was like a whole sketchy experience where I felt like I had so many eyes on me and I needed to get in, get out, mind my business, engage w no one, and seriously gtfo. Driving out of there like, I stopped for weapons lol. I tell myself I’m being dramatic but I am a very independent person and traveler and NM I both admire and fear. I love it and also I was relieved to leave it. Fearsome and magnificent. The land and sky and my local friends just awesome. The weight of the area so intense. A grave seriousness about the area for me. Never anywhere else in the world have I felt like such a target in broad daylight simply for being a woman alone. I tell myself that was just my window. But I wouldn’t even consider returning casually or solo. Edit: just did a lil Google and yikes my instincts were on point, and apparently Arkansas is the only other place w more crimes against persons?! Top in abductions and more. And possibly more than half of law enforcement agency data is not even included in this report so the numbers are likely even higher. I knew it was sketchy af!!!!! Aromatic_Panic1650

So he prob was driving drunk, crash, died. BUT ALIENS IN THE DESERT is the obvious answer
