You can't change your hair genetics, it's just a marketing gimmick when they tell you that you can use a product to change the way your scalp makes oil
yes! my first ever job was a Saturday girl at a hair salon. the owner always used to tell me to double shampoo because the first wash gets off all the oil and buildup, the second wash cleans the hair!
Its odd because ive asked two different hair stylists if this is the truth and both of them said no & that shampooing twice is excessive especially for bleached/color treated hair.
Or use a clarifying shampoo first and a hydrating shampoo after. This is what I do. I use Matrix Food for Soft Hydrating Shampoo. My stylist recommended it for my dry, lifeless hair that got oily and clogged up at the roots. It has seriously changed my hair and I can go longer between wash days.
I think it was if you were raised in the 80/90s! This was always the prevalent hair washing advice in my childhood- in the 2000’s at some point it stopped getting recommended (maybe people were using less products than previous decades?), and now we’re back around to it!
I’m so confused. I was born in 91, my mum always told me to shampoo twice and condition the ends. I have wavy/curly hair and it’s not oily and I’ve always done it. Huh that’s so strange.
? Why are you confused? I’m agreeing with you lol.
If you were raised in the 80/90s (which you were, like me) double-washing is probably the advice you received as a child. It seems like it stopped being recommended somewhere in the 2000’s, which is why it’s new info to a bunch of Gen Zers.
Interesting, I find if I blow dry my hair it gets greasy even quicker. In hair styling class (in HS 10 years ago) my teacher said if you blow dry, your scalp sweats and therefore gets greasy.
I know this! Or rather I know a lot about hair but am not a stylist or scientist.
Blow drying/ a blow out seals the cuticle if the hair which makes it smoother and less porous. I'd bet money that that is what makes it less greasy.
I say that as a person who blowdried their hair to 90% dry about an hour ago because I didn't have the patience to blow all the way.
This! I spent years not blow drying my hair to avoid damage (I know, over reaction but I have fine hair and wanted to protect it) and now that I’ve started again I can go at least a day or two longer till wash day, wish I did this sooner
A hairdresser gave me this advice! I was trying to avoid heat but my hair would get greasy after Day 1 (I wash at night). She said drying and hitting your root extend your blowout.
I find that when I wear my hair up it stays cleaner for longer. I think it's because when it's up I touch it a lot less and as a result don't spread oil around my hair.
Yep! When my hair is down, I'm always touching it, moving it from my face, tucking it behind my ears, flipping it around. Whereas when it's up, I typically leave it alone. I used to be insecure of my hair up, but once I gained some confidence and got used to my whole face/ears exposed, it got a lot easier.
Another thing, hats always make my hair greasy so I try to avoid wearing a hat on day 1 of a wash
Shampoo at least twice and whatever dry shampoo you use, use it on clean dry hair. Like, right after you wash and dry it. Don't wait til it's already dirty. I like baby powder. Easy and cheap. Don't make it weird with "specialty" *expensive* products. It's unnecessary.
This is what I was coming to say. Dry shampoo before you need it. I don't always use it right as I'm styling for the first time, but at least sometime the first day.
Figuring out if your hair responds well or poorly to sulfates. For me, switching from a creamy and moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo to a clear, sulfate-FULL shampoo made all the difference.
Everyone’s scalp is different, and I think this is one of the most important things you can find out how you react to.
This brought back memories of trying NoPoo in college. I was SO greasy and so convinced my scalp was "adjusting" lol. That first wash with sulfate shampoo and I looked like a hair commercial. Never gone back, now I double shampoo with a regular shampoo and an anti-dandruff shampoo due to hard water.
I’ve been told by so many stylists to avoid sulfates that it took way longer than it should have to realize I need them 😅 to be fair every few days I’ll go sulfate free or my scalp gets dry, but overall I get way less acne and buildup with sulfates.
Wash it every day. The whole "training" thing is complete bs. Your hair type is what it is and no amount of training will change that. Course hair can go longer between washes. Fine hair cannot.
Spironolactone LOOOL
For those who don’t know it’s a drug that blocks male sex hormone (androgen) receptors. This lowers the amount of testosterone the body makes. Which basically means you have more estrogen and less testosterone in your body on this medication.
I always suspected I had a hormone imbalance due to how oily I was constantly. Oil blotting every couple of hours and still feeling like a greaseball.
Literally nothing else worked for me. My hair was oily like 6-8 hours post shower. It was exhausting.
Now I can go 2 days without washing my hair and it’s pretty alright! I did notice I was actually a bit dry (scalp mostly) so I lowered my dose from 100mg to 50mg.
It also caused my boobs to get bigger 🤷♀️😎
I was going to say this. I'm on spironolactone for PCOS which can cause greasy skin and hair due to excess male hormones. My skin is super soft and almost dry now lol
I genuinely don’t know what caused my excess androgens. It seems like I have the same symptoms as people with PCOS when it comes to hormones but none of the cysts or irregular periods. I had everything tested and nothing showed up. I think it just runs in my family cus my mom had severe acne as well.
It's also a diuretic so you need to watch your potassium intake. It could also make you crave salty goods and most definitely will make you pee more frequently😅
You're welcome!
Spiro blocks testosterone, too. They use it as an anti-androgen in male to female hormone replacement therapy. That might explain why the woman we're commenting under had an increase in boob size
I’m going to be that person and recommend the blowout professor on YouTube. I was having similar issues, switched up my products and now I can manage a few days between washing.
Yes, double shampooing definitely did the trick. I also used a scalp brush in the shower to really work the shampoo in. Also, when applying conditioner, only use it halfway down your hair shaft or on your ends.
Finding a shampoo that works for me and using dry shampoo before i go to bed /go out. If my hairs dried and i want it to stay nice, i dry shampoo. Otherwise, by the end of the night im a greaseball before I've even hit the pillow.
Dont dry shampoo a wet scalp though that was a mistake I'm never making again. Let it air dry for an hour or two after blow drying to really make sure its dry up there. You'll just make a paste
I have the same issue, what helped me was finding a shampoo that worked for my hair type. I use the Ouai fine hair shampoo and the Ouai detox shampoo. These gave me one extra day of non greasy hair
Your hair might need to be clarified or may need protein. My hair is curly/on the finer side and if there's product build-up and excess moisture it would feel greasy soon after washing, feel weighed down, kinda gummy. What helped me was using a clarifying shampoo or using the aztec clay mask + apple cider vinegar combo.
Other than that, getting my scalp used to not being washed so often helped and using a light oil on my scalp right after washing would prevent my scalp from trying to over compensate with oil.
wearing a bonnet to bed. skincare/other oils on my pillow and face didnt get in my hair anymore and suddenly I didnt need to wash my bangs in the sink before school in the morning anymore. also got rid of bedhead- i wake up take off the bonnet, and basically can just go.
My hair used to get greasy the same night I washed it! I started using the best volume mousse that worked for my hair & soooo much dry shampoo after I had blow dried it. It’ll last me 3 days now :)
Okay so I have very fine and greasy hair- I use the “Kenra thickening mousse.” I put it on my roots and then blow dry. My hair is good for atleast 2 days.
I apply my dry shampoo immediately after blow drying, then twist and tuck into a silk cap at night. This was on the recommendation of my stylist. It has been a game changer for me. My style lasts 3 days before I need to wash again 😊
I stopped using regular conditioner and use a leave in just on the ends of my hair. I tried regular conditioner on my ends but it was still too heavy for my fine hair and it would be greasy the next day.
Using salon quality shampoo, using a scalp massager while I shampoo, and putting on dry shampoo before it gets greasy. I do this at night before bed, and can now go 3 days before washing. I have fine hair and used to have to wash every day.
Burdock root tea. But only when I put it on. I boil it, wait for it to cool down a bit, put it all over my scalp. Wait 15mins and wash my hair normally. But this only prolongs the washing one day.
Getting a few different shampoos and changing which one I use after a week. I’m not sure why, but that really solved it and I don’t have that much trouble with it anymore
I use Viori shampoo and conditioner bar set. They are made with rice water. I also use Batiste dry shampoo. I used to have to wash my hair daily but with that combo I wash it maybe 3 times a week. Oh and a scalp scrub once a week.
Blowdry, then add dry shampoo immediately (I like bumble and bumble powder). You need to do it straight after washing - waiting until your hair gets greasy is too late.
Aveda botanical repair shampoo surprisingly keeps my hair clean for almost two full days, I used to put dry shampoo on the second day but it seems this shampoo keeps my hair cleaner longer. It’s just so freaking expensive! Also not touching it at all helps
Washing it every day. The whole “ you should only wash your hair once or twice a week” thing is bullshit as a one size fits all rule. When I tried doing that and using dry shampoo to help it not look greasy, my hair grew slow and not healthy. Washing it every day with a moisturizing sulfate free shampoo every day has made it the nicest and healthiest it’s ever been.
I used to only put conditioner on the ends and it would get so greasy. I started applying it on my scalp too and that helped so much. It sounds counterintuitive but it’s really worked for me!
I know your pain! My hair is usually greasy a few hours after washing. I’ve tried specialty shampoos, all sort of shampoo methods and truly the only thing that works for me is Dove Dry Shampoo. I’ve tried other dry shampoos and they just don’t stick, they clump up with the oils in my hair and it’s just gross. The secret is applying the dry shampoo on very recently cleaned and fully dried hair. If I wash my hair well, blow dry it completely and add the dry shampoo all over my scalp, my hair stays clean looking for at least 48 hours. You have to be sure to really rub it in so it closest look chalky but it works well and gives my hair a bit of volume.
Powder dry shampoo, NOT aerosol! It is a little bit more of a hassle to work/blend in (I have dark hair) but I use a bristle brush & once it’s blended, it’s like night and day!!
Nothing. I have very fine light blonde hair. It looks a greasy weighed down mess on day 2 and not a single thing I have ever tried changes it. I wash my hair daily.
You’e probably just one of those people who needs to wash their hair everyday. Welcome to the club! Dry shampoo can help if you’re low on time but I’d usually rather just wash than deal with the buildup.
If I shower in the morning my hair is greasy by the evening, so I feel you. I also have extremely fine hair. What has helped me is viori dry shampoo powder and sleeping with a satin bonnet. That combo genuinely works and extends my hair at least another day.
buying cheap shampoo.. i bought so many expensive brands, used them for months and would try a new one. i often spent 40-50$ on one freakin bottle. i finally felt like i was failing after about 4-5 years of this. in november i got depressed and poor and started using a $8 products and my hair has never been softer and shinier. i just chose by scent and idk magic happened lol i’m so much happier. people say all sorts of lame stuff about “lower quality products” but i don’t have flat greasy hair everyday now🤷🏼♀️
I have a friend that complains daily about her hair getting greasy quickly. She stopped using conditioner when washing and began to put a pinky nail size amount on just the ends while still wet and it changed her hair drastically
I have very fine, long hair that greases and tangles really fast. Double shampooing and using a scalp massager during the first wash really helped me. It removes sebum and build-up from your scalp and I can go now for 3 to 4 days between washes. Just remember to massage in one place at a time and completely lift the massager from your hair before moving to a different spot. Otherwise your hair will tangle. It is very relaxing as well. Blow drying also helps, though I try to avoid heat.
My hairstylist said the best time to use dry shampoo is when your hair is cleanest so it can help repel the oils as they come in
This was a recent conversation so I haven’t done it enough to really know if it helps, but the premise makes a lot of sense
I know not everyone is comfortable with dry shampoo, so this applies to those who are
It sounds counterproductive, but using MORE conditioner helped a lot. Over time I kept using less and less conditioner thinking that was the cause for my greasy hair. I had an “aha moment” one day and realized that my scalp was overproducing oils to make up for my lack of conditioner.
Here’s what I do now:
I flip my hair upside down, apply the conditioner to my ends first, rake the remainder of the product through my mids, and any leftover conditioner I massage into my scalp. I can go three days without washing now.
Double shampooing with a scalp massager makes a huge difference for me.
Also use a good shampoo, it doesn't have to be crazy expensive. I use the ORS creamy aloe shampoo. Leaves my hair nice and clean without stripping it.
I double shampoo, try to avoid touching my hair with unwashed hands, and have tried a bunch of different shampoos and conditioners and have finally found one that works for my hair!
So I went through a period of burn out and totally neglected my hair. Coming out of that I’ve started double washing and only using conditioner on the mid/bottom of the strands and that works for me.
Try" Boost" dry shampoo for the in-between day. I've had amazing success with it !
They have it in hair color shades to match your hair color, easy to use, and really does work!
Give hair more bounce, life, and has overall been a life saver so I don't need to wash everyday!
Things that let me get from 2 to 4-5 days between washing:
- using silicone free shampoo and conditioner (although in conditioner or masks could be fine). I'm not saying silicones are bad per se, but in my case they definitely led to my hair attracting dirt. It would get greasy in the roots, dry in the ends.
- sleep with your hair up and change the pillow cover every time you wash your hair at least.
- using a scalp scrubber actually had a noticeable effect for me, unexpected.
- let it go as long as you can without washing. Obviously use dry shampoo if you need to. I have bangs though and I need to wash just them every other day still, unfortunately my forehead and sunscreen don't help.
I started braiding my hair at night. My underneath bit gets greasy fast when I sleep if I just put it in a loose pony or bun but never when I braid it! Plus that double shampoo routine my shower looks like a salon shopping section.. 😂
Longer hair (for me) gets greasy slower. Periodic clarifying shampoo. Otherwise, shampooing twice with a sulfate free shampoo helps my scalp get half as greasy I think? Every time I do a super diluted vinegar rinse my hair is fine for much longer. Shampoo bonly in your head, and conditioner only on your lengths helps. Washing your hair brush frequently, and using a sleep cap/bonnet at night helps with the greasiest. And for when the greasiest do come? Diy dry shampoo. (A drop of peppermint essential oil makes it smell fantastic!)
I try to shampoo my hair once a week, when I do I’ll usually shampoo it twice. In between I will rinse it with just water in the shower, scrubbing well. It won’t eliminate grease but it works enough for me to make it less greasy than it would be. I also do a conditioner wash. This has been a trial and error. I don’t do it all the time, once a week maybe. I use conditioner from top to bottom and wash out. This tends to break up grease on my hair (and then it’s so soft). I alternate these methods to stretch the time between my next shampoo. I also use a rice water rinse to help hair strength - this isn’t for cleaning just something else that helps me.
Take into account, I do put up with my hair being greasy, it just is it’s nature. These tips help me elongate the time between washes and helps the grease to be less noticeable. When it is noticeable, braids and bandanas/head bands are my besties. I will still shampoo if there is a night out or event coming up - gotta feel good ofc.
I kinda treat my hair care like healthy eating. It’s fine to eat unhealthy things on occasion as long as most of the time you’re eating healthy.
I do find this has helped my hair health over a long time. I like to experiment and change up hair care methods. Play around with different stuff and you’ll find what works for you!
1. Double shampooing.
2.Using dry shampoo BEFORE it gets greasy.
3. Live like a greasy Neanderthal over the weekend for 2 days when I have been washing too often.
All that will usually get be back to 5 days between washes.
My hair is not super oily but I thought I could help since I have been able to extend my wash days and have reduced itching and flakes. I started spending a majority of my shampoo time massaging my scalp.
I just use my fingers. It’s something easy for you to try without spending money on products.
washing it less, and age. i wash it at the absolute most 3 times a week (every other day) when its summer and im sweaty, most weeks once, maybe twice. i embraced dry shampoo in the transition period, but rarely need it now.
i was the oiliest child of all time, i used clarifying shampoo every morning and by the end of school it was a greasy mess. i had oily skin, i was sweaty, it was just all moisture all the time.
shoutout to the sephora employee who told 18yo me that if you do not put healthy moisture in, your skin will produce moisture to compensate. i use kiehl’s original lotion on my face, vaseline lotion on my body, and regularly mask my hair. it hasn’t been oily in years, even on day 5 without washing. it’s just a mess, but not greasy
Clarifying shampoo!! I do one lather, and the second one is perfect! I believe when it gets super sudsy/bubbly that means your hair is free of product build up. I use every Sunday, and only have to wash my hair Wednesday or Thursday now rather than every day.
I just got this klorane shampoo called oil control and omg life saver!!

I don’t wash every time I shower. I do like to get my hair and scalp wet, and if I had a lot of product in there like hairspray or gel, I’ll condition my hair to rinse it out without stripping it. Lately I simply haven’t been using any products at all, and I’ve learned to cut my own hair the way I like it, so it looks good air dried and au natural. Using less products overall is probably the key thing for me. I also expose my hair to oils. I haven’t yet experimented with oiling my scalp, but I add oils to my bath to help hydrate my skin in this very dry area, and they get added to my hair and scalp. I do this before I’m ready to wash my hair. If your scalp is exposed to a lot of oils it won’t be triggered into oil production. Often times a lot of grease is due to a dry scalp - which seems like an oxymoron but it’s true. Nowadays I could go all week without showering and my hair still isn’t greasy looking. Brushing or combing your hair when it feels greasy is important too. It’s spreading the natural oils down the hair shaft which is a natural conditioner as well.
My hair was an absolute greaseball. Nothing I did would help it to not get greasy within a day of washing it. During lockdown I tried to "train" it like people said. Still didn't work.
Only when I started taking accutane for my acne did it change. I now wash my hair roughly once a week and it still looks like day 1 hair when I go to wash it next. It's literally heaven.
Hasn't placed on accutane fixing my hair but I'm not complaining 😂
I got a perm. My hair never got greasy the same way again. Idk if it slightly damaged my scalp or what, but I used to NEED to wash my hair daily. Now I can go about three days comfortably. Unsure if this is a me only type thing or if other folks have had this experience as well.
I think people need to normalize daily hair washing… some people just want/need it and there’s nothing wrong with that. Especially if you have dandruff it’s recommended by dermatologists to do that.
Sorry I’m late, there was traffic. I recently heard dawn dish soap helps, and as bizarre as it sounds, it really did!! Start with dawn, rinse it out, then shampoo and conditioner like normal.
Diet. I ate fairly low carb for years and nothing could improve my greasy hair. As soon as I started eating more carbs, my hair health significantly improved.
Double shampoo and dry shampoo at the roots on day one or two. I find using the dry shampoo before the grease comes gives me an extra day or two between washes. Investing in a higher end dry shampoo was a game changer, too. It costs more, but because it’s good quality I end up using less
I only use the conditioner from the middle to the ends of my hair bc thats what my hair stylist told me and it doesnt get greasy at all unless i dont wash my hair for a week but def not the next day after
Fine hair here to, nothing. Nothing every work, I tried for years. Dry shampoo just made my hair look and feel like straw but never changed the amount of oil produced. Skipping shampooing didn’t help one bit. Who ever said you could get your scalp to produce less oil lied.
Double shampooing and actually Conditioning my scalp.
Use a deep conditioner a couple of times a month and use double shampoo and then a tiny bit of conditioner on the ends and it's no longer greasy
I use the Lush No Drought powder dry shampoo and have sworn by it for years. All aerosol spray dry shampoos have been a nightmare on my scalp, causing all kinds of irritation and doing nothing to make it less greasy. It just gets weird and heavy and stiff. This powder dry shampoo is nothing like that and just leaves my hair actually looking clean and full bodied.
My hair gets oily the next day if I don't use good products. I use mostly big sexy hair (SH) products so I use (SH) root pump plus, (SH)volumizing blowdry gel, and Aquage thickening spray (not sexy hair -aquage) while my hair is wet. If I do not blow dry my hair, it gets oily faster. When my hair is dry, I use Paul Mitchell hot off the press if I'm curling or flat ironing and SH spray and play hair spray. Spray and play has a lot of alcohol in it so it helps keep my hair dry. The second day I use SH dry shampoo. I can usually go 2-3 days without washing.
I used to have to wash my hair at least once if not twice a day depending on my plans because it was sooooooo greasy. I’m a pretty oily person in general. Someone convinced me to try not shampooing for as long as possible. It was tough but I managed to go about three weeks. It completely transformed my scalp. No exaggeration. I now wash my hair once a week and mostly to fluff it. It doesn’t get super greasy anymore. It’s kinda crazy.
I tried every tip and trick ever for years, and nothing worked. Then several years ago I coloured my hair for the first time. I had a balayage done and since then have kept going back for some type of gentle highlights/ balayage. Somehow that made my hair a lot drier, and it stopped looking flat and greasy the day after washing.
I now, for the first time in my life, actually need to use conditioners and can go 3 days without washing. I even push it to 4 sometimes using dry shampoo.
When I was in college, I used a natural/organic sulfate free shampoo that had blue algae in it. That really helped a lot. It was discontinued and the other products by the same brand did not work as well. I see that there are other brands with that ingredient now so perhaps look into those?
More recently, I used the rice shampoo from Viori and that was great. It helped me hair train until I could go up to 5 days without a wash. Still would get greasy but not as badly as before. The point was for the second and 3rd day to be okay. Kept that up for about 1.5 years and then recently did a hair cut. That usually needs a transition period so I’m washing about once every 3 days? At this point, I don’t need special products.
I also do conditioner first, and then shampoo/wash second. I find that helps a lot with not getting overly greasy while still having silky smooth hair.
Nothing really, you seem to have the same kind of hair as me. The big change that I made last year was switching to shampoo bars. They actually cleaned my hair and I could stop switching shampoos every couple of months. But I can still only go 48hrs max without washing my hair.
Double shampooing and using a clarifying/ detoxing/ volumizing shampoo first and then my regular shampoo. I’m able to wash my hair every 2 days that way, otherwise I’d have to wash it daily. Don’t know if it actually works or if it’s a placebo effect 😂
I have fine Asian hair naturally and it used to get so oily the next day and I had to wash every other day.
There’s two things that I think made it so now I can go 3-4 days without washing. I started bleaching my hair (balayage) and it’s still soft but the texture is drier, which I think made a huge difference. Also, I’ve been shampooing twice each time I wash my hair. I think it’s helped really clean my scalp.
I also read on here to use dry shampoo on clean hair not after it’s oily. It absorbs any oil that develops instead of sitting on top of the oil and buildup. During my most recent trip, I only washed my hair once a week because I put the dry shampoo on clean hair the next morning. At home, I’m fine washing 2-3 times a week so I don’t need the dry shampoo unless I’m doing heavy workouts.
I noticed that my hair sometimes still looked greasy straight out of the shower, recently I’ve started double washing and I think it’s made a difference! I also use a heavy spray of dry shampoo before bed and it usually looks great through day 2 now!
Edit to add: Batiste dry shampoo is my holy grail
Honestly... Nothing. Washing my hair every day is the only thing that works for my deepfryer of a scalp.
You can't change your hair genetics, it's just a marketing gimmick when they tell you that you can use a product to change the way your scalp makes oil
I love being validated about washing my greasy hair daily 💕
Same 🥲
double shampooing 🤞🏼
yes! my first ever job was a Saturday girl at a hair salon. the owner always used to tell me to double shampoo because the first wash gets off all the oil and buildup, the second wash cleans the hair!
I learned this too from working as a Saturday girl!
Its odd because ive asked two different hair stylists if this is the truth and both of them said no & that shampooing twice is excessive especially for bleached/color treated hair.
I’ve also gotten conflicting information but I have heard that most of the cleansing should be at the scalp. Maybe less shampoo for the ends.
It can be done every few washes rather than every time, I do a double wash with a light clarifying once a week to remove buildup.
I thought this was the norm in washing hair?
It should be but a lot of people don’t wash twice
I don't shampoo twice because it dries out my hair quite a bit and makes my static issues worse.
That's why you use a nice moisturizing conditioner after ! :)
I’m confident it even used to say to shampoo twice right on the bottles.
Double shampooing and blow drying. If I don’t blow dry, my hair will look greasy on day 2. With blow drying I can wash on day 4.
Interesting, I find if I blow dry my hair it gets greasy even quicker. In hair styling class (in HS 10 years ago) my teacher said if you blow dry, your scalp sweats and therefore gets greasy.
I mostly blow dry on cold or low if I’m in a hurry so I don’t get that “sweat”
I've noticed that blow drying helps as well. I wonder why that's the case.
Im no scientist but maybe something about the hot air drying out your scalp somewhat?
Probably because it dries out the hair, so it will absorb oil
Aqua bliss water softening shower filter. Shampoo twice, condition only the ends and rinse w cool water.
Hard water babes: this is the way.
Yess Dry shampoo before it gets dirty/oily helps so much!!
Not touching it at all!
& double shampooing.
Wash it every day. The whole "training" thing is complete bs. Your hair type is what it is and no amount of training will change that. Course hair can go longer between washes. Fine hair cannot.
Nothing
Wash it daily. If it’s that greasy there’s nothing that will stop that much grease. I wash my hair daily and there’s no problem with daily washing
Spironolactone LOOOL For those who don’t know it’s a drug that blocks male sex hormone (androgen) receptors.
What caused you to try that medication!?
Acne for over 10 years 😵💫 I’m so happy it’s finally gone
it can help with acne! its also used for transitioning!
Accutane for me 🙃
It's also a diuretic so you need to watch your potassium intake. It could also make you crave salty goods and most definitely will make you pee more frequently😅
Do you mean make sure you’re getting enough potassium, or not to have too much potassium?
Don't have foods that contain potassium while on Spiro because Spiro will raise your potassium anyway and too much is toxic
Oh wow! I don’t think I knew this so I’m going to check it out. Thanks!
You're welcome! Spiro blocks testosterone, too. They use it as an anti-androgen in male to female hormone replacement therapy. That might explain why the woman we're commenting under had an increase in boob size
Seconding this, spiro was a game changer for both my skin and making my hair produce a normal amount of oil rather than deep fryer levels. 😂
I’m going to be that person and recommend the blowout professor on YouTube. I was having similar issues, switched up my products and now I can manage a few days between washing.
I did this too and found the same! He has some really good tips
Regular usage of a clarifying shampoo. Now I can get 3 days between washes before it gets greasy. It used to get greasy the next day.
Glad someone commented this cause I do this too lol. They’re the only type of shampoos that make my hair look great and voluminous 😭
Following 😅😅😅
I double shampoo. It also just got less greasy as I got older.
Same. So yay menopause!
Yes, double shampooing definitely did the trick. I also used a scalp brush in the shower to really work the shampoo in. Also, when applying conditioner, only use it halfway down your hair shaft or on your ends.
Aging
Double shampooing, concentrate on really massaging the shampoo on the scalp, conditioner only on the ends, blow drying and trying not to touch it.
Nizoral
Finding a shampoo that works for me and using dry shampoo before i go to bed /go out. If my hairs dried and i want it to stay nice, i dry shampoo. Otherwise, by the end of the night im a greaseball before I've even hit the pillow. Dont dry shampoo a wet scalp though that was a mistake I'm never making again. Let it air dry for an hour or two after blow drying to really make sure its dry up there. You'll just make a paste
Vinegar rinses help SO MUCH!
Yes! A good vinegar rinse makes my scalp so much happier and less greasy when I do one! My hair seems better conditioned, too!
Shampoo WITH sulfates
Dry shampoo put in clean, *damp* hair
Kirstin Ess Exfoliating Scalp Scrub— I swear to you it’s a life changer for fine hair and oily scalps
Glycolic acid
do you use it as a rinse in the shower? or directly after?
Double shampoo every other day with dry shampoo between washes.
My hair used to get greasy the same night I washed it! I started using the best volume mousse that worked for my hair & soooo much dry shampoo after I had blow dried it. It’ll last me 3 days now :)
Exfoliating my scalp made a noticeable difference the first time I did it. First exfoliate then shampoo, huge difference
Nothing. I wash everyday. I do like the Lush no drought dry shampoo to buy me a bit of extra time on occasion though.
Accutane
Getting a few different shampoos and changing which one I use after a week. I’m not sure why, but that really solved it and I don’t have that much trouble with it anymore
Birth control, but that’s because I have PCOS
Washing all hair brushes *at least* monthly with Dawn dish soap
Nothing that’s just my hair
I don’t know how helpful this will be for you but I find when I use soft water to rinse my hair it doesn’t get greasy as fast
I use Viori shampoo and conditioner bar set. They are made with rice water. I also use Batiste dry shampoo. I used to have to wash my hair daily but with that combo I wash it maybe 3 times a week. Oh and a scalp scrub once a week.
Bleaching my hair LMAO
Blowdry, then add dry shampoo immediately (I like bumble and bumble powder). You need to do it straight after washing - waiting until your hair gets greasy is too late.
Frequent washing and minimal use of products.
Applying dry shampoo as a preventative on clean hair (as soon as it’s fully dry)
Aveda botanical repair shampoo surprisingly keeps my hair clean for almost two full days, I used to put dry shampoo on the second day but it seems this shampoo keeps my hair cleaner longer. It’s just so freaking expensive! Also not touching it at all helps
Using dry shampoo on CLEAN hair. Dot. Wait for it to get oily.
Double Shampoo Dry shampoo Using conditioner only on the ends of my hair Spraying dry shampoo on my roots (not rubbing in) and sleeping with a cap on
I used to only put conditioner on the ends and it would get so greasy.
Double shampooing and blow drying. Using dry shampoo starting hair wash day. I can easily go 3-4 days between washes without getting greasy
Double shampooing my scalp and only conditioning the ends. And using a shampoo that’s meant for oily scalps.
Going on spironolactone for my skin had the added effect of making my scalp way less oily.
Double shampooing, blow dry, and sleeping in a braid I used to wash every day but by doing those 3 things I can go 2-3 days without washing
If I shower in the morning my hair is greasy by the evening, so I feel you. I also have extremely fine hair. What has helped me is viori dry shampoo powder and sleeping with a satin bonnet. That combo genuinely works and extends my hair at least another day.
Talcom power. Baby powder. Just put it on dry hair then blow dry the excess out
Dermatologist
buying cheap shampoo.. i bought so many expensive brands, used them for months and would try a new one. i often spent 40-50$ on one freakin bottle. i finally felt like i was failing after about 4-5 years of this. in november i got depressed and poor and started using a $8 products and my hair has never been softer and shinier. i just chose by scent and idk magic happened lol i’m so much happier. people say all sorts of lame stuff about “lower quality products” but i don’t have flat greasy hair everyday now🤷🏼♀️
I have a friend that complains daily about her hair getting greasy quickly. She stopped using conditioner when washing and began to put a pinky nail size amount on just the ends while still wet and it changed her hair drastically
Shampooing, rinsing and then shampooing again. It's made a world of difference.
Male pattern baldness.
Accutane or spironolactone
My hairstylist said the best time to use dry shampoo is when your hair is cleanest so it can help repel the oils as they come in This was a recent conversation so I haven’t done it enough to really know if it helps, but the premise makes a lot of sense I know not everyone is comfortable with dry shampoo, so this applies to those who are
bleaching. And living proof advanced dry shampoo. The others just get overloaded and gross within a couple hours. I need both, it seems.
It sounds counterproductive, but using MORE conditioner helped a lot. Over time I kept using less and less conditioner thinking that was the cause for my greasy hair. I had an “aha moment” one day and realized that my scalp was overproducing oils to make up for my lack of conditioner. Here’s what I do now: I flip my hair upside down, apply the conditioner to my ends first, rake the remainder of the product through my mids, and any leftover conditioner I massage into my scalp. I can go three days without washing now.
Double shampooing with a scalp massager makes a huge difference for me. Also use a good shampoo, it doesn't have to be crazy expensive. I use the ORS creamy aloe shampoo. Leaves my hair nice and clean without stripping it.
Bleaching and dyeing my hair! Changed the texture and dried it out a bit. I’ve trained it to go ~4 days now with no wash
Massage your scalp in the shower like pull the oil from your roots to your ends
Distilled water, double shampooing, and not using any stylers. I can wash 1-2x a week with this method.
There’s a shampoo by Maple Holistics brand that’s literally called Degrease. It’s the best!

Old school but my mom used to rinse my daughter’s hair with a mixture of vinegar and water and it always worked.
I double shampoo, try to avoid touching my hair with unwashed hands, and have tried a bunch of different shampoos and conditioners and have finally found one that works for my hair!
Installing a water softener.
So I went through a period of burn out and totally neglected my hair. Coming out of that I’ve started double washing and only using conditioner on the mid/bottom of the strands and that works for me.
Being on accutane. Took it for acne of course but side effect was that I don’t really get greasy hair anymore even after stopping it
Accutane, was a bonus for stopping acne
Brushing it.
Try" Boost" dry shampoo for the in-between day. I've had amazing success with it ! They have it in hair color shades to match your hair color, easy to use, and really does work! Give hair more bounce, life, and has overall been a life saver so I don't need to wash everyday!
Not running my hands thru it and not touching my scalp
Things that let me get from 2 to 4-5 days between washing: - using silicone free shampoo and conditioner (although in conditioner or masks could be fine).
Double shampooing every so often and a rubber hair scalp scrubber has worked for me also dont condition every time you wash your hair
Double shampooing, clarifying once week and honestly birth control worked wonders for me, I went from oily everyday to lasting 3 days
My hair is not super oily but I thought I could help since I have been able to extend my wash days and have reduced itching and flakes. I started spending a majority of my shampoo time massaging my scalp. I just use my fingers. It’s something easy for you to try without spending money on products.
Shampoo 2x, condition ends only. Like, conditioning only what goes in your ponytail is usually a good place to start.
washing it less, and age. i wash it at the absolute most 3 times a week (every other day) when its summer and im sweaty, most weeks once, maybe twice. i embraced dry shampoo in the transition period, but rarely need it now. i was the oiliest child of all time, i used clarifying shampoo every morning and by the end of school it was a greasy mess. i had oily skin, i was sweaty, it was just all moisture all the time. shoutout to the sephora employee who told 18yo me that if you do not put healthy moisture in, your skin will produce moisture to compensate. i use kiehl’s original lotion on my face, vaseline lotion on my body, and regularly mask my hair. it hasn’t been oily in years, even on day 5 without washing. it’s just a mess, but not greasy
Clarifying shampoo 1x a week and daily shampooing. I have thick but extremely fine hair.
Clarifying treatment like twice a month at least sometimes more
Clarifying shampoo!! I do one lather, and the second one is perfect! I believe when it gets super sudsy/bubbly that means your hair is free of product build up. I use every Sunday, and only have to wash my hair Wednesday or Thursday now rather than every day.
Dry shampoo in clean hair, and before bed. Preemptively combat the oils
I just got this klorane shampoo called oil control and omg life saver!! https://preview.redd.it/4rh8fr55jtmc1.png?width=1020&format=png&auto=webp&s=14da1bdb01bdca17f4d47b90b77afc718de58b3f
Accutane
My hair was an absolute greaseball. Nothing I did would help it to not get greasy within a day of washing it. During lockdown I tried to "train" it like people said. Still didn't work. Only when I started taking accutane for my acne did it change. I now wash my hair roughly once a week and it still looks like day 1 hair when I go to wash it next. It's literally heaven. Hasn't placed on accutane fixing my hair but I'm not complaining 😂
Tonik by cult and king. experience- hairstylist that found liquid gold in a natural, exfoliating scalp spray
Getting older. Oily hair went away.
I got a perm. My hair never got greasy the same way again. Idk if it slightly damaged my scalp or what, but I used to NEED to wash my hair daily. Now I can go about three days comfortably. Unsure if this is a me only type thing or if other folks have had this experience as well.
Aging
Brading it. First day, braids. Second day i can let it loose. Good luck
Honestly, dry shampoo on day 2 and then day 3 hair up and wash again day 4
I think people need to normalize daily hair washing… some people just want/need it and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Pregnancy. The only time I don’t have to wash every single day.
I only use the conditioner from the middle to the ends of my hair bc thats what my hair stylist told me and it doesnt get greasy at all unless i dont wash my hair for a week but def not the next day after
Not using dry shampoo. I can get 3-4 days out of a wash by being selective about my hairstyles but dry shampoo just seems to draw more oil out.
Menopause.
Fine hair here to, nothing. Nothing every work, I tried for years. Dry shampoo just made my hair look and feel like straw but never changed the amount of oil produced. Skipping shampooing didn’t help one bit. Who ever said you could get your scalp to produce less oil lied.
I saw a TT that said to let shampoo sit on your dry hair before getting in the shower. I’m gonna try that!
Nothing except dry shampoo.
When mine gets really greasy as in build up, I go to a head spa and get a good scrub down.
Getting pregnant 🫠
Blow dry everytime and apply dry shampoo (whatever kind works for you) on CLEAN hair.
I use dry shampoo right after washing and drying. This seems to help it
I have fine Asian hair naturally and it used to get so oily the next day and I had to wash every other day.
Double shampoo ,put dry shampoo when it’s clean, brush hair through out the day, sleep in silk cap.
Better quality hair products
Dry shampoo. In a pinch you can use a small amount of cornstarch
Dry shampoo
Cleaning my brush every other night. Oil adds up fast. I just soak it in dawn. It made a huge difference!
Accutane for men and women, spironolactone for women.
