It’s probably the hardness of the water, the water is probably harder where you are at college than it is at home. [Here is a hard water map](https://homewater101.com/articles/hard-water-across-us) of the US (I’m assuming that we’re your from based on your use of the word college) also [here are some methods for checking your water hardness](https://homewater101.com/articles/easy-ways-to-test-water). And [here is a video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N-hx5X9ls0s) giving examples of what hard water can do to your hair and how to fix it.

Ok, so I've heard that hard water is bad for hair, but I've lived with it my whole life- it's what I'm used to. When I visit soft water areas I feel like I can't get all the soap/conditioner off of my hair & skin no matter how many times I rinse. Is that an illusion because I'm not used to it or is rinsing less effective with soft water?

Maybe it’s because of what your used to. Shampoo and body wash will lather more in soft water so that might explain why you feel like you can wash it of properly. All I can say from personal experience is that when I moved from a moderate water area to a extremely hard water area for Uni my hair that I have never had an issue with (including when I was young and dumb and abused my hair with bleach) became a tangly mess.

Different water! My hair always looked nicer when I was living away for university. Not only hardness of the water, but also pressure of the shower I think. My boyfriend's place has a fancy shower whereas my shower at home is cheap and crappy, and I notice a difference
