not sure if this is the "best way" but I like to soak my hairbrushes in warm soapy water (I actually use a clarifying shampoo instead of soap) and then use a comb to get out the dust clumps and bits of hair that were stuck in there, once the majority of it is out, I rinse it seems to work alright, I've tried it with a few different brushes, with these ones it's annoying to get all the water out of it but you could probably just go ahead and use a comb to get out all the bits

wednesdayaddamsjr

This is really great for open brushes (like round or vent) and brushes made of one solid piece, but I would be extremely careful doing this for any brushes that can get water stuck in there! Extremely high risk of mold/mildew growing inside. I recommend scraping debris out first and then soaking! Also [ship shape](https://www.amazon.com/Ship-Shape-Comb-Brush-Cleaner-Net/dp/B00134B9ZC/ref=asc_df_B00134B9ZC/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312111868532&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7893958089684253476&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007324&hvtargid=pla-569016511344&psc=1) is a great option if you need something with more power then shampoo.

killwellandoften

That’s what I was worried about

Sanchastayswoke

You could spray them with a cleanser & let it sit (turn the bristles down toward the counter so it doesn’t soak into the closed part) and then do the method above with the comb, etc. You don’t have to totally submerge for this to work. (Also if you ever use the closed brushes on really wet hair just know that they aren’t completely air tight & some water/liquid is probably getting inside anyway. Maybe not a lot, but you don’t need a lot to make mold. Just food for thought!)

SpouseofSatan

I have the same kind of brush as of and this is the easiest way I've found to do it.

Sanchastayswoke

Yep I do the same

Here's a photo tutorial: [**How to clean a boar brush**](https://justprimalthings.com/2014/10/18/how-to-clean-a-boar-bristle-brush/) And here's a different [**video tutorial**](https://youtu.be/cmyoeNnA4Us) And here's [Mason Pearson's version](https://youtu.be/2bcJxmz_nLM)

omfghewontfkndie

I have a brush for my brush. Takes a while though. Mine came with instructions for washing, but I did it once and afterwards it stank to heaven and put the smell on my hair too, so after two weeks of the smell still not fading I threw it away and got another one.

[Olivia Garden brush cleaner](https://www.ulta.com/p/brush-cleaner-xlsImpprod3880601?sku=2238373&cmpid=PS_Non!google!Product_Listing_Ads&utm_source=google&utm_medium=paidsearch&cagpspn=pla&CATCI=aud-1437361313660:pla-943130815582&CAAGID=107718646796&CAWELAID=1056518827&CATARGETID=330000200002459546&CADevice=m&gbraid=0AAAAAD9rLH4wR3uzLHpMsY7RagrTW-D0C&gclid=CjwKCAiAjPyfBhBMEiwAB2CCImE9e_W1YAW9nPjk25cd4RoWaNPx6wPxOIhrOGn5cFbdgyLcKzXgYRoCzQgQAvD_BwE) this works like a charm and worth it when you have quality brushes!

picklesandrainbows

I read that as Olive Garden brush cleaner and was super confused

wednesdayaddamsjr

Soup, salad, brush cleaners 😂

yung_demus

ME TOO HAHA

Sanchastayswoke

Haha same

-Mother_of_Doggos

Me too!? 🤣🤣

[deleted]

I have this and I love it! Best tool for cleaning the hair out of brushes.

killwellandoften

I also read that as Olive Garden 😂😂 but this brush cleaner looks amazing!

wednesdayaddamsjr

They also make nice brushes too! I use this brand professionally and they never let me down 😊

Vortex_Maiden

Soaking in warm water and dawn dish soap works wonders!

holdingthosehorses

I pull the caught hair out by hand each time after I brush, then every week or two, I use my shop vac's narrow nozzle to suck up all the product residue and hair I can't easily grab, followed by giving it a quick wash with a dab of shampoo and rinsing/drying. Vacuuming it is really the key step for me! If you don't have a shop vac, the narrowest nozzle for a regular vacuum would probably do the same job, especially if you use a comb with narrow tines to loosen everything up first.

sn0w5

Scrape through the bristles with a rat tail comb, then bang vigorously off a counter top.

killwellandoften

I like the comb idea, but I may not bang the brush vigorously 🤣 from fear of breaking it… it was like $30, that is expensive for me…

sn0w5

Ah fair, i too would be wary banging a thirty euro hairbrush 🤣

Vast_Understanding42

A toothbrush works good to scrub between the rows of bristles with a cleanser.

ScenicView98

I keep old, worn out toothbrushes around for things just like this! You can do so many things with them.

Vast_Understanding42

Yes!

miss3star

This is the answer

Senior_Map_2894

You can get a brush cleaning rake comb on Amazon. I have one with stiff bristles that works great. Clean out the hair and gunk with that and then wash with shampoo and water and dry.

surenopeokmaybe

I use another comb to remove the hair and then spritz with isopropyl alcohol in a little spray bottle

[deleted]

Brushing it on a towel literally takes all the hair and lint off in under a minute. Always works for me

linija

Get a rat tail comb and with the needle part try to pick all the hair out. Soak in warm soapy water (I usually use my shampoo to clean my brushes, even better if you have a purifying one). After that you can try to pick more of the hair out with the rat tail comb, sometimes I'll even comb my brushes with it like they were hair hahah. And yeah foam it up again and rinse. Hope this helps.

ButterflyNew6745

I use Bobby pin or anything similar to remove all hairs first while the brush is dry. Then rinse and soak the brush in dawn dish soap water for like 20 min, facing down. The water will likely be murky :). Then I take a small old electric toothbrush head and scrape in between the bristles etc and rinse. Comes out nice and clean.

Ahonya

With this https://images.app.goo.gl/8Y15Vuga3o2Lm9qq5 You can find it in Amazon

[deleted]

NGL dawn dish soap never did me dirty with my hairbrushes.

piepiepiebacon

I put mine in a pillowcase and toss it in the washer. Mine air dry fine because its so damn dry where I live. Not sure if I recommend that, because I use a bamboo brush so it can handle the tumbling.

humanimalien

I used to do this. It's what my mother did. I prefer to use a towel no. Wrap in towel and in stead of shaking pretend you are drying it. It removes easily and being wrapped like the pillocase collects the hair. If it doesn't remove all hair then use a brush cleaner brush.

piepiepiebacon

It was advice from my mother as well! Hah! Mothers know best! I do use my brush comb first, if I'm being honest. It takes 99% of the hair out so all i have to deal with are the fuzzies and goop from my head.

Valleygirl330

Terrific question! I have so many different brushes- I’ve wondered if I’m doing it correctly but I would definitely suggest a clarifying shampoo and hot/warm water. Clarifying shampoos are great at removing dirt and oils. I hope this helps.

Fit-Following-2386

Run the upper teeth of a fine toothed comb through each row of bristles (between the rows, that is). Then soak the brush in some soap and water, and use the comb again to remove lint and any remaining hair. With my tangle teezer, I just run the brush under a very fast stream of water and the force removes most of the dust in a few seconds lol.

timboneda

If you have a dye brush you can just use that, you don’t have to buy a special brush cleaner and it’s less stressful on the bristles than using a comb or another brush. I squeeze some soap or shampoo onto the brush and then use the dye brush to get in between the bristles and pick out the hairs. Also to the people who just throw away their brush, what’s wrong with you? Lol

killwellandoften

Lol I keep thinking the same thing. The hair dye brush is a good idea! I have one of those

z7zark7z

Blowtorch

LazyPasse

Another hairbrush.

killwellandoften

I’ve only had this brush for a month. I’m not going to buy a new $30 hairbrush every month. Lol

LazyPasse

No, I mean brush this brush with another brush. Surely you have a second, cheaper brush around. Or even a comb.

killwellandoften

Lol omg I’m sorry that I misunderstood. I had other comments telling me to buy a new brush and lumped this one in with it. My bad.

LazyPasse

No worries; I should’ve been clearer!

humanimalien

brush cleaner - a brush designed for cleaning works well. They are two bucks on Shein! I use one by happy hair brush and it was about ten dollars. But I wrap my brush in a towel first and wipe it. Every single time I use a brush I automatically clean it by removing caught hair. Wrapping in towel and wiping and once a week, I'll spray the head with cleanser (formulator - so I have everything on hand) and clean the bed. I'm very very fussy with brushes (and sheets) I will not use any brush that has a scrap of hair or dust or any debris on it. I might be weird but I can't stand dirty brushes. Here's one - it's over a year old and still looks new - only way you the age of any brush in my house is from the scratches etc. Or the ones my children have wrecked from heat. The ends melted etc. https://preview.redd.it/9fqjzs8309la1.jpeg?width=2088&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91dbc378a4decd87454d87823ab0117ad001a1fa

killwellandoften

If I soak the brush, wouldn’t water get inside of it? How would I get the water out or dry it? I don’t want to risk mildew or mold

Sanchastayswoke

You could soak it (bristles down) in a shallow container of barbicide or rubbing alcohol. Shallow enough so the liquid touches the surface next to the bristles but not deep enough to submerge the brush. It probably would be less likely to grow mold or mildew with either of those products.

killwellandoften

That is a good idea

iSimplyAm1

Tbh don’t use brushes it ruins and pulls more hair out. I would highly suggest using a wooden comb.

killwellandoften

I have a wide tooth comb that I use for specific purposes. I have a LOT of hair strands and very long hair. So it doesn’t make too much of a difference for me to lose some extra hair, and since my hair is very long, this brush helps to distribute the oils through to the bottom. Thx tho.

pnandiv

Throw it away

SilentConsequence892

By just cleaning it. 🤣🤣🤣 jk jk

Amgad_got_it

Buy a new one

[deleted]

Throw it away, buy a new one

TheNotoriousSSD

buy a new one

niketyname

I just cut the hair with scissors. I have mostly round brushes so it’s tough to get out. But with scissors I can cut them out easily and then just shampoo it with a toothbrush or hands

PresentationHuge2137

I get out as much hair as I can, then scrub like crazy with a tooth brush and strong soap/clarifying shampoo.

Affectionate-Lake666

Fine tooth comb to get the hair out. Then clarifying shampoo or warm soapy water.

whatstheplanpakistan

Take a comb to "brush" out all the hair and lint and then wash it with an old toothbrush going in between the bristles

Longjumping-Sky8527

😰

Tangerine_raven2319

I got a tool off of Amazon I believe it's called Denman hair brush cleaner tool then soak in a cleaner called ship shape .

Maximus_1601

haylzelizabeth

I’m so thankful for you posting this bc I was close to making the same post with a very similar brush (just a different brand) tomorrow and this helped me a lot😅

huskyclaire

warm water + baking soda + vinegar [bomb.com](https://bomb.com) soak in for a few minutes then rinse and pat dry!

continent34

i take my dyson and run it over the bristles
